A small group of Israelis and Palestinians in Jerusalem is trying to bridge a Hebrew-Arabic language gap through learning modelled on speed dating. WION's Jodie Cohen brings you this report.

Language 'speed dating' in Jerusalem is bridging the hebrew-arabic gap

In a city with deep political, religious, and cultural divisions, a small group of Israelis Jews and Palestinian Arabs in Jerusalem are attempting to break the barrier by learning Hebrew and Arabic from each other based on the idea of speed dating.

About 20 students meet weekly at a 19th-century villa. Sitting face to face, Jews and Arabs practice each other’s language by reading out from cards with simple situations, prompting a conversation between them.

When a whistle sounds every 20 minutes, participants rotate with new partners across tables arranged under colourful murals.

The project was started in 2019 by Maya Giz, a Hebrew teacher, and Sahar Mukhemar, a Palestinian sports instructor and a former student of hers.

The founders say that the meetings help the Palestinians improve their Hebrew language skills required for dealing with Israeli officials, and the Jews gain a better understanding of Arabic.

“Palestinians in Jerusalem don’t study Hebrew in school, in any way. And it's the same for Israelis - if they do study Arabic, it's an Arabic you can't use. Therefore, we came up with this initiative, you can call it a civil initiative, that directly meets this need of the ability to communicate with each other in each other's language. Out of this, the real important thing emerges - the meeting and the acquaintance,” Giz told news agency Reuters.

Sahar Mukhemar, the project co-founder and co-manager, said the basic objective of the project is to popularise Hebrew language within Arabs and vice-versa.

“The reason I wanted to create this thing, I felt this need within me personally, was the absence of the Hebrew language within Arabs for many reasons. For example, if they need to go to a hospital or mall or just need to get by with the language. So, I felt this need within me when I learned Hebrew, I saw that the students themselves need to practice the language and not only learn it, and from here came the idea to address the need for language exchange, Arabs and Jews together,” Mukhemar told Reuters.

Most Palestinians in Jerusalem live in the city’s east, an area captured by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war. Only basic Hebrew is studied in East Jerusalem schools. That makes it difficult for Palestinians to reach a very high skill level in the language.

US mulls opening Jerusalem consulate, GOP leaders bring bill to stop reopening embassy

Israel will remain opposed to Washington's plan to reopen a US consulate in Jerusalem that has traditionally been a base for diplomatic outreach to the Palestinians, even if political conditions change, an Israeli cabinet minister said on Tuesday.

The consulate was subsumed into the US Embassy that was moved to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv in 2018 by then-US president Donald Trump, steps hailed by Israel and condemned by Palestinians.

President Joe Biden wants to reopen the consulate to rebuild relations with the Palestinians, who seek parts of Jerusalem, as well as the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip, for a hoped-for state.

"No way, no way," Justice Minister Gideon Saar told a conference hosted by the Jerusalem Post newspaper when asked if the consulate reopening might go ahead - perhaps in the event of this or a future Israeli government yielding to US pressure.

"It needs Israeli approval," he added, speaking in English. "We will not compromise on this issue" for generations to come.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, a nationalist atop a cross-partisan coalition, opposes Palestinian statehood, and Lapid has said that reopening the consulate could unsettle the government.

But Israeli media have speculated that Bennett could relent if Washington holds off until after his government secures more domestic stability by passing a long-delayed national budget, with ratification votes due next month.

Saar ruled out such a scenario, saying: "I want to make it very clear - we oppose it. We won't oppose it now and have a different opinion after the budget. We are 100 per cent opposed to it."

Israeli archaeologists on Tuesday revealed the discovery of a 2,700-year-old toilet, which was designed for a single home rather than a public latrine.

Archaeologists discovered a smooth, carved limestone toilet in a rectangular chamber in a huge home facing out over what is now the Old City in Jerusalem's Armon Hanatziv district, according to Israel's Antiquities Authority (IAA).

Twice a year, a team of cleaners equipped with long sticks clear out tens of thousands of written prayers and wishes crammed into the crevices of Judaism's Western Wall in Jerusalem by worshippers and visitors, making room for fresh ones. It is time again for this cleaning at the wall on Wednesday (August 25). But this time, the rite was held with precautions against coronavirus infection in place, after a relapse in the infection rate.

Palestinians who have been facing eviction in Jerusalem have rejected a proposal from Israel's Supreme Court that they rent their homes from a Jewish settlement organization.

The judges have suggested they become "protected tenants" and stay in the city's eastern Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood.

Palestinians reject offer to end Jerusalem evictions threat

Brief clashes were reported between Israeli Police and Palestinians at the Al-Aqsa mosque on Sunday. No serious injuries were reported and Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett ordered the Police to continue allowing jews to ascend temple mount on the first day of Tisha B'Av.

Clashes spark at Jerusalem's holy site after Palestinians opposed Jewish visits

Muslim protesters clashed with Israeli police on Sunday at a flashpoint shrine in Jerusalem Old City shrine when Jews were headed there to mark a religious holiday, said police.

Palestinians condemned the Jewish pilgrimage to Al-Aqsa mosque which is known to the Jews as the Temple Mount.

Israel's right-wing Prime Minister Naftali Bennett stood by Isarel's decision to allow Jews to visit the site

According to police, in the early hours of the morning Palestinian "youths began throwing stones at the Temple Mount esplanade toward police forces, who dispersed them". There were no official reports of arrests or injuries.

The European Union delegation to Palestinian territories said in a tweet that it was "concerned over ongoing tensions". It urged that there be no "act of incitement".

It also called for respect for the site's status quo urging Israeli, religious and community leaders to urgently "calm down this explosive situation".

The incident took place on the Jewish festival of Tisha B'av, marking the day of the year thousands of years ago when, according to tradition, both Jewish temples located on the Temple Mount were destroyed.

The holy site lies in east Jerusalem, which Israel occupied and annexed in 1967, but is administered by the Muslim Waqf organisation which reluctantly grants Jews limited access.

Tension increase at Al-Aqsa mosque on Jewish holy day

Archaeologists have found what they believe is a section of Jerusalem’s outer city wall, built in the 8th century BC.

The Israel Antiquities Authority announced Wednesday that the recent discovery of two stretches of stone bulwark from the Iron Age "unequivocally" prove a huge wall once protected the entire eastern flank of ancient Jerusalem.

Previous finds over the decades had uncovered two sections, one stretching for 90 metres and the other 30 metres, but a 70-metre gap between those two segments left doubts as to whether the ancient city of Jerusalem, with its First Temple, was shielded by an uninterrupted eastern wall.

The newly discovered segments consist of 14 metres and three metres.

The new find puts to rest an ongoing debate among archaeologists over whether the previously known wall sections were indeed used for fortification or instead as support walls for construction on the steep 30-degree slope on the eastern side of the city.

"Now that we found another two sections... we can conclusively say that the City of David in Jerusalem, the eastern slope, was surrounded by a massive wall," said archaeologist Filip Vukosavovic, who led the excavation for the Ancient Jerusalem Research Centre.

The archaeological site lies in Silwan, a Palestinian neighbourhood in east Jerusalem just south of the Old City. East Jerusalem was occupied by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day war and was later annexed by the Jewish state.

"The two segments that we found are actually the missing link between the previous two sections found in the City of David, and for years we've been trying to find it," Vukosavovic said.

The City of David, as the biblical patriarch called ancient Jerusalem after conquering it in the 10th century BC, was capital of the Judean Kingdom, which lasted until 586 BC, when it was overrun by the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II and then destroyed.

The Israel Antiquities Authority said Wednesday in a statement: "it seems that the debate has been settled, and that this was unequivocally the eastern wall of ancient Jerusalem."

A stone Babylonian stamp seal depicting gods and a clay stamp seal impression bearing the Judaean name Tsafan were found near one of the newly unearthed sections.

The entire wall, rising from the bedrock of the sloping hill, was likely built around the eighth century BC, and served "the main defensive line in case of attacks on Jerusalem," Vukosavovic said.

"I can tell you absolutely that when the Babylonians arrived, approximately a year and a half before they destroyed the city, it is this wall they see, stone for stone," he told journalists.

The newly found longer segment of the wall was within the "City of David National Park", run by hardline settler organisation Elad, which seeks to bolster the Jewish presence in east Jerusalem.
