<p>Referring to the meaning of the word 'Tarini', the Navy Chief said that it meant "she who frees" and that it is also the name of the Hindu Goddess Durga.</p>

<p>"Tarini has freed all those who sailed on board from inhibitions - from Can I? to I can!"</p>

<p>He added that Tarini was also freeing India from sea blindness to sea consciousness. He also mentioned that the Indian Navy is facilitating maritime consciousness in India and making citizens aware of the nation's rich maritime heritage.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Appreciating the women naval officers on board INSV Tarini- Lieutenant Commanders Dilna and Roopa for enduring the elements and braving it all for 188 days, the Navy Chief declared that one of the two women officers would undertake a solo circumnavigation expedition.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Navy officers Lt Cdr Dilna and Lt Cdr Roopa were selected from a pool of 17 women officers of the Indian navy and had undergone multiple rounds of training and sailing expeditions within India, before attempting the 188-day voyage. According to the Indian navy, the duo had undertaken practice sorties from Kochi to Goa, round trips between Goa and Vizag, and from Indian shores to Mauritius and back. &nbsp;</p>

<p>During their 188-day expedition, the two women officers on board INSV Tarini were mentored by senior officers of the Indian Navy, who have had a significant experience in ocean sailing. Two sets of male officers of the Indian navy took part in the latest expedition. One batch of male officers sailed onboard Tarini from Goa to Rio De Janeiro and then disembarked, handing over to another set of officers for the return journey.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Sunil Lanba has informed that Team Tarini&nbsp;will safely return to Goa on Monday evening. "The six courageous women of Team Tarini sail into Goa this evening," he noted.</p>

<p>Lanba called the event a "staggering achievement at many levels".</p>

<p>"India's maritime narrative adds one more glorious chapter to its illustrious legacy as the six courageous women of Team Tarini sail into Goa this evening. It is a staggering achievement at many levels - for the Indian Navy that conceived and steered the initiative, for Indian women who just broke one more glass ceiling, for those involved with the odyssey for daring to dream big, for the global and Indian sailing fraternity which has new entrants to its Hall of Fame," Lanba added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"But, above all this is a stupendous achievement for every Indian. There are some days when we are all one. Today, India is Team Tarini. We are all sailors. And the Indian Flag and Naval Ensign flutters high and proud," he said.</p>

<p>INSV Tarini is a 56-foot sailing vessel that showcases the 'Make in India' initiative on the International forum. The expedition, titled 'Navika Sagar Parikrama', is in consonance with the national policy to empower women to attain their full potential.</p>

<p>The all-women crew of INSV Tarini will return&nbsp;to the state on Monday evening after a historic circumnavigation of the globe for over eight months.</p>

<p>The six women officers trained under Captain Dilip Donde, the first Indian to solo-circumnavigate the globe in 2009-2010.</p>

<p>The expedition was sailed in six legs, with stopovers at the Fremantle (Australia), Lyttleton (New Zealand), Port Stanley (Falkland Islands), Cape Town (South Africa) and Mauritius.</p>

<p>"It covered 21,600 nautical miles in the Indian-built sailing vessel INSV Tarini that visited five countries and crossed the Equator twice, sailed across four continents and three oceans, and passed south of the three Great Capes - Leeuwin, Horn and Good Hope," a Navy spokesperson said.</p>

The all-women crew of the ‘Navika Sagar Parikrama’ is just a day away from returning to shore in Goa. The lady officers led by Lieutenant Commander Vartika Joshi are the first ever Indian all-women crew to sail around the world. The expedition with Lieutenant Commanders Pratibha Jamwal, Swati P and Lieutenants Aishwarya Boddapati, S Vijaya Devi and Payal Gupta has covered 21,600 nautical miles in the Made in India sailing vessel INSV Tarini. They sailed across four continents, three Oceans, visited five countries and crossed the Equator twice.</p>

<p>The INSV (Indian Naval Sailing Vessel) Tarini and her crew will be welcomed home on Monday two hundred and fifty four days after she set sail on the 10th of September, 2017. She will be flagged in by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and the Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Sunil Lanba on the 21st of May 2018 in Goa.</p>

<p>In eight months, since they set off, the crew has sailed from Goa to Australia, New Zealand, the Falkland Islands, Cape Town, Mauritius and back home.</p>

<p>The experiences of the crew exemplified perfectly by the last few days at sea seeing the crew escorted home by a shark whale and her babies.</p>

<p>The sailing vessel is named after the Tara-Tarini hill shrine in Ganjam district of Odisha. In Sanskrit, Tarini means boat and savior. Tara-Tarini is the traditional patron deity for sailors and merchants of ancient Odisha. The deity is worshipped for safety and success at sea. And safely and successfully is what these six ladies of the Indian Navy have accomplished in their journey sailing around the world in 254 days.</p>

<p>The Indian Navy&#39;s first all-women crew of Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Tarini has&nbsp;successfully crossed the Cape Horn off the Southern tip of South America, also referred to as &quot;Mount Everest of sailing&quot;.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The six-member all-women crew hoisted the Indian flag to mark their achievement. The team had earlier started their journey from Goa in September last year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>INSV Tarini is a 56-foot sailing vessel, which was inducted into the Indian Navy earlier this year and showcases the &#39;Make in India&#39; initiative on the International forum.</p>

<p>The expedition, titled &#39;Navika Sagar Parikrama&#39;, is in consonance with the national policy to empower women to attain their full potential.</p>

<p>It further aims to showcase &#39;Nari Shakti&#39; on the world platform and help revolutionalise the societal mindset towards women in India by raising the visibility of their participation in the challenging environment.</p>

<p>The vessel will return to Goa in April 2018.</p>


The six-member all-women crew hoisted the Indian flag to mark their achievement. The team started their sail from Goa in September last year.

The Indian Navy's first all-women crew of Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Tarini has successfully crossed the Cape Horn off the Southern tip of South America, also referred to as "Mount Everest of sailing".
