Shikhar Dhawan ruled out in T20s and ODIs, and Ishant Sharma not being available for the tests landed a major blow to the Indian team before the series started. Sanju Samson and Prithvi Shaw will be replacing the prolific Indian opener (Dhawan) in T20Is and ODIs respectively. Hardik Pandya failed the fitness test and could not make it to the squad. Kane Williamson, on the other hand, has to bounce back after being clean swept in the previous home Test series against Australia (0-3). He called it a 'humbling experience'. He currently ranks fourth in the list of highest run-scorers as a T20I captain. Kohli, at the moment, is just 81 runs short of MS Dhoni's runs (1,112) in T20Is. Faf Du Plessis leads the list with 1,273 runs in 40 T20Is. Virat Kohli needs to score 242 runs to surpass Faf du Plessis and become the highest run-scorer as a T20I captain. Following the latest escalation in the Iran-United States conflict, India's 'basmati rice' trade to Iran has come to a halt.

Iran, the largest buyer of premium rice from India has witnessed setbacks. The insurers are unable to provide cover to shipments. Iran is the largest buyer of the premium rice from India, and the situation has arisen at the onset of the procurement period by the West Asian country.

In this volatile situation, payments for any shipments will also be delayed by several months.

The All India Rice Exporters Association President Nathi Ram Gupta said that the payments were delayed by five months last year and that exporters are no longer willing to take risks. About Rs 900 crore worth of payments is still pending from the rice that was exported until June 2019.

The basmati rice from India is part of the stape cereal food in Iran. Between 2018-2019, Iran had imported 1.48 million tonnes of basmati rice from India. But in the current year, exporters are circumspect over the delay in payments.

Some of the global basmati buyers other than Iran have increased their purchase this season, as they had anticipated volatility in prices in the coming months.

Iran on Monday (July 22) released for the first time footage showing the crew members of a seized British-flagged tanker aboard their ship in Bandar Abbas. Iran has repeatedly said the crew of the Stena Impero are safe and still on the vessel, since its seizure on Friday (July 19) in the Strait of Hormuz. The video showed the tanker's crew sitting around a table in the discussion, monitoring equipment on the vessel and chefs preparing food in the kitchen. The seizure of the Stena Impero on the world's most important waterway for oil trade has deepened a crisis between Tehran and the West that was triggered in May when Washington tightened sanctions, effectively barring all countries from buying Iranian oil. Britain called on Iran on Monday to release the tanker and its crew immediately, describing the seizure as illegal. Britain on July 4 seized an Iranian tanker, the Grace 1, off the coast of Gibraltar. Britain accused it of violating sanctions against Syria, prompting repeated Iranian threats of retaliation.

Pakistan faces a plethora of problems along its border with Iran. The country has used Jaish ul-Adl against Iran as well. On 8 May 2017, India instituted proceedings in the International Court of Justice about egregious violations by Pakistan of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, 1963 in the matter of arrest, detention and trial of Jadhav, an Indian citizen. Military courts were set up by Pakistan after 2015 as an instrument for the military to engage in summary trials. These courts have been responsible for several death sentences given after April of 2017. Jadhav was denied the right to be defended by a legal counsel of his choice. His conviction and death sentence is based on 'confessions' taken in captivity.

India has succeeded in stopping Pakistan from taking the law into its own hands. Its approach and efforts at the ICJ led to pressure on Pakistan and Jadhav's execution was stopped. Pakistan's argument that ICJ had no jurisdiction was overruled by the ICJ.

Pakistan's military has been restrained using the weight of ICJ and India's strong legal case.

ICJ is scheduled to deliver its verdict in Kulbhushan Jadhav case on Wednesday.

An LGBTI job fair, billed by organisers as the first such event in India, attracted more than 250 people on Friday looking for employment with companies including Intel, Goldman Sachs and Uber. The event on Friday (July 12) in the southern city of Bengaluru comes after India's Supreme Court overruled a law banning homosexuality in 2018, which the organizers said now enables companies to freely hire people who have been marginalized for years. Many Indians who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex (LGBTI) still face stigma and violence.

A 24-year-old Indian man has been charged with kidnapping, assault and theft after he drove off in an elderly woman's car from outside a medical centre in the US with her grandchildren inside the vehicle.

Dalvir Singh, a heroin addict, was taken into custody and charged with two counts of kidnapping, felonious assault for dragging Nita Coburn, 69 and grand theft, Middletown Division of Police said in a statement.

Coburn was injured when as she tried to stop Singh as the kids jumped out of the car.

The police is also hailing Coburn's 8-year old grandson Chance as a hero for saving his 10-year old sister's life by pulling her out of the car as Singh took off in it.

The Middletown Police said that on the evening of April 25, it received a call that a car with children inside had been stolen at a medical centre in Middletown, Ohio and that an elderly lady was injured.

Coburn had taken another woman to the hospital and her two grandchildren were with her in the back seat. When they got to the emergency room, she pulled up close to the door and was helping the other woman into the emergency room.

About 10 seconds after she got out of the car, Singh jumped into the driver's seat and took off with the children still in the back.

The little boy opened the door to escape and his sister Skylar started to jump out also but Singh grabbed the hoodie of the little girl not allowing her to leave. As she tried to get away, Chance grabbed hold of her and pulled her away from Singh and they both tumbled out of the vehicle as it was moving.

Police said Coburn did not realise that the children were able to escape because they flew out of the passenger side and by that time she was chasing the car on the driver's side.

She opened the driver's door to regain control of the vehicle she thought her grandchildren were in, but Singh slammed the door shut again and locked the door.

She hung onto the vehicle panicking because she thought the children were still inside. The vehicle dragged her until it accelerated at a high rate of speed and she was forced to let go.

Two police officers observed the stolen vehicle fleeing the scene and chased Singh, who was then taken into custody and charged.

Middletown Police Chief Rodney Muterspaw lauded the heroic attempt by Chance to save himself and his sister from the kidnapping attempt.

"This little guy is a hero. No question. He pulled his sister out of the car with no concern for his own safety. That is incredible at his age," he said.

The Middletown Division of Police said it will be recognising the little boy's quick action to not only get out of the vehicle but also making sure that his sister got out with him.

Indian charged with kidnapping after driving away two children in car in US

An Indian has been extradited to the US from Singapore to face charges of his involvement in a multi-million dollar India-based call centre scam that targeted Americans.

Hitesh Madhubhai Patel, 42, of Ahmedabad is scheduled to be arraigned Friday before a US magistrate judge in federal court in Houston.

The indictment, which was unsealed in October 2016, charged Patel and 60 other individuals and entities with general conspiracy, wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy.

The US Justice Department said that the massive India-based telephone impersonation fraud and money laundering conspiracy defrauded thousands of US residents out of hundreds of millions of dollars.

Assistant Attorney General Brian Benczkowski of the Justice Department's Criminal Division said Patel operated a call centre that allegedly preyed upon vulnerable US citizens as part of a massive fraud scheme.

"This extradition once again demonstrates the Department's unwavering commitment to disrupt and dismantle the India-based call centre scam industry and to work with our foreign partners to hold accountable those who perpetrate schemes that defraud our citizens," he said.

US Attorney Ryan Patrick of the Southern District of Texas said large complex international cases like these often take years to bring in foreign-based defendants, applauding America's global partners in helping bring this case closer to a conclusion".

The Justice Department said that Singapore authorities apprehended Patel at the request of the US following a provisional arrest warrant in September last year after he flew from India to Singapore.

The Singaporean Minister for Law issued a warrant on March 25, 2019, for Patel to be delivered into the custody of the United States.

The indictment alleges that Patel operated the HGlobal call centre conglomerate and participated in a complex fraudulent scheme involving a network of call centres based in Ahmedabad.

Using information obtained from data brokers and other sources, India-based conspirators allegedly called potential victims while impersonating officials from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or US Citizenship and Immigration Services.

According to the indictment, the call centre conspirators then threatened victims with arrest, imprisonment, fines or deportation if they did not pay taxes or penalties to the government.

When victims agreed to pay, the call centres used a network of US-based conspirators to quickly liquidate and launder the extorted funds through the use of stored value cards or via wire transfers.

As alleged in the indictment, the stored value cards were often registered by the scammers using misappropriated personal identifying information of thousands of identity theft victims, and conspirators collected the wire transfers by using fake names and fraudulent identifications.

The call centre conspirators also defrauded victims through other schemes, including via offering fake short-term loans or grants.

The indictment alleges that the conspirators would then request a good-faith deposit to show the victims' ability to pay back the loan or a fee to process the grant. The victims of the alleged scam never received any money after making the requested payment.

A total of 24 domestic defendants associated with this transnational criminal scheme have previously been convicted and sentenced to terms of imprisonment of up to 20 years in the Southern District of Texas, District of Arizona and Northern District of Georgia.

The defendants were also ordered to pay millions of dollars in victim restitution and money judgments and to forfeit seized assets.

Some defendants were ordered to be deported based on their illegal immigration status, with another defendant having his US citizenship revoked due to a separate conviction for immigration fraud. The remaining India-based defendants have yet to be arraigned in this case.

Executive Associate Director Derek Benner of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) said Patel's extradition should serve as a strong deterrent to anyone considering taking part in similar scams and hoped it provides a sense of justice for the victims as well.

Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) Russell George said since 2013, the IRS impersonation scam has been on a relentless path, claiming more than 15,000 victims who have collectively suffered over USD 75 million in losses.

"TIGTA's investigations, often conducted with other Federal agencies, have identified 140 scammers, including Patel, who have preyed upon taxpayers.

"Today's extradition and arraignment are proof that TIGTA and its law enforcement partners will be equally relentless in rooting out individuals who fraudulently identify themselves as IRS employees in order to extort money from taxpayers," George said.

Special Agent in Charge David Green of DHS-OIG Houston, Texas Field Office said the owners, managers and employees of overseas call centres who target US residents should know that the US pursuit of justice for victims of their scams does not stop at the water's edge.

"We will continue to work with our international partners to identify these fraudsters, track them down and hold them accountable for their crimes," Green said.
