Indian wrestlers' protest against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI)'s chief Brij Bhushan Singh&nbsp;for alleged sexual harassment has been making the headlines for quite long. Their protest has extended to over a month and seems to be far away from getting close to a conclusion. On Sunday (May 28), Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, and Sakshi Malik-led protesting wrestlers marched towards the new parliament, when it was being inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to demand justice but were stopped by the Delhi Police.

It led to a huge chaos just a few kilometres away from the new parliament, which made headlines. Images of wrestlers being detained by the police saddened many in the country. Amid all this, some pictures were also circulated on social media platforms which showed the wrestlers smiling after being detained by the cops.

Bajrang Punia has now reacted to all such images and said 'IT cell people' are spreading this false picture.&nbsp;He shared two images, one fake and the other being a genuine one saying, "IT cell people are spreading this false picture. We make it clear that a complaint will be filed against whoever posted this fake picture."

<h2>UWW joins in, comes in support of protesting wrestlers</h2>

On Wednesday (May 31), the United World Wrestling (UWW) also reacted to the ongoing protest&nbsp;being held at&nbsp;Jantar Mantar in the national capital. It further issued a warning to the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) asking to conduct the elections within the next 45 days. In addition, the international body slammed the speed of investigation in the charges levelled by WFI's member athletes against Brij Bhushan Singh.

"UWW firmly condemns the treatment and detention of the wrestlers. It expresses its disappointment over the lack of results of the investigations so far. UWW urges the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the allegations," UWW said.

"UWW will request further information about the next elective general assembly from the 10A and the Ad-hoc Committee of the WFI. The 45-day deadline that was initially set to hold this elective assembly shall be respected. Failing to do so may lead UWW to suspend the federation, thereby forcing the athletes to compete under a neutral flag. It is reminded that UWW already took a measure in this situation by reallocating the Asian Championship planned in New Delhi earlier this year."

"For several months, United World Wrestling has followed with great concern the situation in India where wrestlers are protesting over allegations of abuse and harassment by the President of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). It has taken due note that the WFI President has been put aside at an early stage and is currently not in charge," UWW further asserted.

"As it has already done since the beginning of this situation, UWW will hold a meeting with the wrestlers to inquire about their condition and safety and reconfirm our support for a fair and just resolution of their concerns," the statement added after the wrestlers threatened to immerse their medals in holy River Ganges, on Tuesday (May 30), before withdrawing from it eventually.

Bajrang Punia reacts to morphed images of protesting wrestlers, claims 'IT cell' people are spreading this

Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia, on behalf of all protesting peers, said in a statement on Twitter that all the wrestlers are going to put their medals in the holy river Ganges in the city of Haridwar at 6 pm&nbsp;India Standard Time on Tuesday, May 30.

The statement comes days after multiple First Information Reports (FIR) were filed against them on the charges of rioting and obstructing the discharge of duty by public servants. The police dragged the protesting athletes forcefully when they tried to move towards the new building of the Indian parliament on its inauguration day on Sunday, May 28.

Punia, in his statement on Twitter, said that there's no point in holding onto the medals now as the politicians, who once took pride in their medals, have failed them. The grappler also said that he, along with other wrestlers, would sit on fast unto death at India Gate in national capital New Delhi after putting their medals in the river. The wrestlers have been staging a sit-in at Jantar Mantar since April 23 following the allegations and demanded criminal action against Bhushan who has since been stripped of all administrative powers by the sports ministry.&nbsp;

As of late Sunday, the police had filed an FIR against the protesting wrestlers and others for rioting, unlawful assembly and obstructing public servants in their duty. Senior Delhi Police Officer Dependra Pathak after the detention had said that the wrestlers had been detained for “violating law and order.”

On Monday, Bajrang Punia also responded to a former IPS officer’s tweet who said that the protesters should be shot. “This IPS officer is talking about shooting us. Brother is standing in front, tell me where to come to get shot… I swear that I will not show my back, I will take your bullet on my chest,” said Punia, in response to the statement.&nbsp;

Commonwealth Games 2022: India's wrestling team in action today led by Bajrang Punia

Wrestling had been one of India's most successful sports at the Olympics with 4 medals since Independence. Wrestling however was a male-dominated sport and female wrestlers were frowned upon in the state of Haryana. Sakshi Malik charted a journey against the odds at a very young age and at the Rio Olympics, she scripted an amazing comeback to win Bronze in the 58kg event.
