The Indian Navy successfully evacuated an injured Chinese seaman from a bulk carrier off the Mumbai coast on Wednesday (Jul&nbsp;23).

The Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre (MRCC), Mumbai, received a distress call from bulk carrier ZHONG SHAN MEN 200 Nm (approximately 370 km) from Mumbai.&nbsp;

A distress call was made to authorities, stating that a 51-year-old Chinese mariner on board the ship had sustained life-threatening injuries with heavy blood loss, requiring urgent medical intervention, according to reports.

Responding to the medical emergency, a Seaking helicopter flew from Indian Naval Air Station INS Shikra at 0550 hrs. Despite adverse conditions, the Indian Navy personnel successfully airlifted the injured mariner from the bridge wing of the vessel.

The injured Chinese mariner was then flown back to the naval air station by Indian Navy helicopter before being transferred to a hospital for advanced medical care.

The Indian Navy shared dramatic footage and images of the rescue operation on its official X account.

"Challenging weather conditions with winds over 45 knots and&nbsp;heavy rolling of the ship were compounded by non-availability of the continuous deck. The patient was successfully airlifted from the bridge wing of the vessel and&nbsp;transported back to the air station by and subsequently shifted to hospital for further medical management,” wrote SpokespersonNavy.

“ICGS Samrat in the area was also diverted to render assistance. The safe and timely evacuation of the patient was a result of joint operation coordinated by MRCC (MBI) with the Indian Navy," added Spokesperson Navy.

The social media users hailed the humanitarian gesture by the Indian Navy.

Experts believed this was because naval forces led by the US have diverted their attention to the Red Sea to thwart Houthi attacks. Abhijit Singh, head of the Maritime Policy Initiative at the Observer Research Foundation, told Reuters, "The sudden revival in ship hijacking and attacks can only be attributed to the pirates' willingness to take advantage of the fact that the focus of anti-piracy maritime forces has largely shifted from the Gulf of Eden to the Red Sea." A daring, rapid medical evacuation operation by air, undertaken by the Indian Navy,&nbsp;saved the life of a critically ill child and provided succour to the concerned family. The night-time operation was performed following the request of the Civil Administration of Lakshadweep, India’s archipelago off the country’s western coast.&nbsp;

A two-and-a-half-year-old child was battling Febrile Seizure Aspiration Pneumonia and Respiratory Failure and required immediate medical assistance. Owing to the lack of adequate medical facilities at Agatti island to revive the child from this condition, a medical evacuation was carried out.&nbsp;

Despite the harsh monsoon weather prevailing over India's western coast, an Indian Navy Dornier-228 aircraft from the Naval Air Station INS Garuda in Kochi, Kerala mobilised rapidly to Agatti and embarked the child and the parents and flew back to Kochi, where the baby was admitted to a hospital and is recovering. &nbsp;

Located 460 kilometres west of Kerala’s Kochi city, the Agatti atoll houses the lone airstrip available in the union territory of Lakshadweep. Operated by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the airstrip at Agatti was inaugurated in April 1988 for the operation of Dornier-228, and later the operations were extended to the ATR-72 aircraft in September 2010.&nbsp;

However, owing to the short runway length and limited airfield services available, both civil and military aircraft operated&nbsp;only during daylight hours.

It was in October 2022 that the Indian Navy’s Dornier-228 made a maiden night landing at Agatti, thereby enhancing the Indian Navy’s round-the-clock maritime surveillance capabilities and the ability to support the Lakshadweep archipelago at short notice. &nbsp;
