The month of November 2024 recorded the second warmest for the country and warmest for northwest India in 123 years, since 1901, said IMD. The above-normal average temperatures were attributed to the lack of western disturbances.&nbsp;

India also observed its warmest October since 1901 with record high night and mean temperatures after witnessing similar trends in July, August, and September.

The Indian Met Department has predicted above-normal minimum temperatures over most parts of the country for the month of December.

“Monthly maximum temperatures for December 2024 are likely to be above normal over most parts of the country except some areas of central India where normal maximum temperatures are likely,” IMD said.

“The occurrence of cold waves over northwest, central, east and northeastern parts of the country during December 2024 is likely to be below normal,” it added.

The weather department has said above-normal rainfall is expected over most parts of peninsular India, west-central India, and some parts of east-central India and northeast India. This comes as between March 13 and 19, temperatures in the plains of North India were at least 10 degree Celsius above normal, while it was up to 15 degree Celsius in the Himalayan states. Meanwhile, the temperature was above normal by at least five to 10 degree Celsius in the rest of the country.&nbsp;

However, India recorded its average maximum up to March 29 at 30.35 degrees Celsius, as per the data from IMD gridded dataset, reported HT, which was 0.96 degrees below the 1981-2010 average for this time period and was also considered usual by the weather agency. However, March was also the 12th coolest since 1951, the first time that IMD gridded data and also the complete opposite of its preceding month which was the 13th warmest since over seven decades ago.&nbsp;

Notably, the IMD did not forecast the month of March to be a cool one as by the end of February the weather agency said that it is expected to be warmer than usual. However, after the first two weeks temperatures climbed down in most parts of India and on average each day has been at least 1.3 degree Celsius cooler than normal, reported HT.&nbsp;

The report attributed two possible two active western disturbances, cyclonic circulations over Rajasthan and a region of low pressure over the south and east central part of India, citing IMD data. Additionally, the westerly winds of over 100 km/hr along with the moisture from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea due to anti-cyclonic circulation there led to sustained rainfall, thunderstorm, and even hailstorm.

Delhi receives mild showers, no respite from air pollution

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the severe Cyclonic storm Maha which was over east-central Arabian Sea has moved further west-north westwards with a speed of 19 kilometers per hour in the past six hours.

It is very likely to move northwestwards during the next 24 hours and towards west-northwestwards between Saturday to Monday and recurve east-northeastwards towards south Gujarat coast thereafter.

"Mahe is very likely to intensify into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm over east-central Arabian sea during the next 24 hours," the IMD stated in its All India Weather Forecast Bulletin.

The weather forecast agency further forecasted that the Depression over the west-central Arabian Sea has also moved west-southwestwards with a speed of 24 kmph during the past six hours.

"It is very likely to move southwestwards across the west-central Arabian Sea maintaining the intensity of a Depression during the next 12 hours and weaken into a Well Marked Low-Pressure Area thereafter."Also, under the influence of cyclonic circulation over the Gulf of Thailand and neighbourhood, a Low-Pressure Area is likely to form over the north Andaman Sea on November 3.

"It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and concentrate into a depression over east-central Bay of Bengal during the subsequent 48 hours."

Due to the prevailing weather system, rain and thundershowers were observed yesterday at many places over Lakshadweep and at a few places over Madhya Maharashtra and at isolated places over West Rajasthan, Saurashtra, Kutch, Madhya Pradesh, Konkan and Goa.

Besides these regions, Coastal and North Interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal were also battered by rains on Friday.

"Cyclone `Vayu` is expected to hit the coast in Gujarat between Porbandar and Veraval early 13th June morning speeding up to 110-120 kmph and gusting up to 135-140 kmph," Deputy Director General Meteorology, Mumbai IMD, KS Hosalikar said.&nbsp;

In view of the warning of heavy downpour in parts of Gujarat, the state government has deployed NDRF personnel in and around coastal areas of Kutch and Saurashtra, reports said.&nbsp;

"Mumbai will also be affected by the cyclone but not that severely as it is likely to cross at a distance of 250-300 km away from the Mumbai coast tomorrow early morning," Hosalikar said.

He said, "A cyclone warning has been issued in Mumbai for fishermen and people living near the coastline. Mumbai will see a weather change today and tomorrow due to the effect of the cyclonic formation."

The weather officer has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea for the next couple of days while ports have been asked to flag danger signal.
