While the lowest salary package decreased, the average annual package experienced a slight increase of 7.7 per cent - rising from Rs 21.8 lakh ($25,965) in 2023 to Rs 23.5 lakh ($27,990) in 2024.

At the same time, the placement percentage hovered around the 75 mark, which was a seven per cent decrease from last year's placement rate.&nbsp;

"Most of the remaining unplaced students have identified avenues to be gainfully employed," a report by IIT-Bombay stated.&nbsp;

The finance sector companies secured the services of 113 IIT-B graduates, while at least 17 design companies offered 33 jobs, which was lower than last year's numbers.&nbsp;

CSM Tech, IIT-M to build world's fastest autonomously driven electric race car by 2025

A research team from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT),&nbsp;Guwahati, has successfully developed a fast and cost-effective 3D printed device to detect specific bacteria that cause urinary tract infection (UTI).

The research team&nbsp;led by Dr&nbsp;Partho Sarathi Gooh Pattader, an associate professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at IIT Guwahati,&nbsp;created this device that can accurately detect specific bacteria causing UTI.&nbsp;

Explaining the mechanism, Pattader said that the equipment can detect the type of bacteria within a few minutes of conducting the test.

"We have used gold nanoparticles with specifically engineered aptamers. An aptamer is like a 3D puzzle piece that fits only on the surface of a particular bacteria. The gold nanoparticles thus get agglomerated on the surface of the target bacteria giving out a unique signature that can be detected by a UV- Visible Spectrophotometer," Pattader told WION.

Not only that, the test is also gaining popularity because of its affordable nature and cost efficiency. The average manufacturing cost of a UTI analyser is Rs 75,000 ( $910 approx.),while testing a sample costs around Rs 800 rupees ($10 approx.).

However, the estimated cost of manufacturing the device is Rs 608 ($7 approx.) and sample testing will cost Rs&nbsp;8 only, Pattader added.&nbsp;

When asked about the force motivating them to conduct such research, Pattader told WION that since UTI is very common nowadays, they wanted to develop a frugal device that can detect the actual cause of UTI, which is largely affecting the women in rural areas.

UTI, though a common disease, is not inevitable.&nbsp;Pattader said that the prevention of UTI lies in maintaining proper hygiene and drinking plenty of water. If one has already encountered UTI, tests should be conducted to detect it as early as possible.&nbsp;

Prominently, UTI is caused due to various bacteria: 80 per cent of cases of UTI is due to E. Coli bacteria, while about 17 per cent is due to K. Pneumoniae, 30 per cent&nbsp;is due to S. Aureus, and about 2 per cent is due to E. Faecalis bacteria.&nbsp;

"In our study, we have shown how to detect K. Pneumoniae and as the method is generic, we have also demonstrated it for S. Aureus. Thus this prototype device with little modification can be used for other bacteria detection as well. And this device can not only detect&nbsp;but also quantify the concentration of the bacteria," Pattader&nbsp;said.

In Type 1 diabetes, the pancreas produces little or no insulin while Type 2 diabetes affects the way the body processes blood sugar or glucose.

“Beyond increasing insulin release, PK2 was also able to prevent and even reverse beta cell loss, a cell essential for insulin production, making it effective for both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes,” added Mondal.

IIT researchers discover molecule that can be used to treat diabetes

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) has been ranked the top Institute in India, in both 'Overall' and 'Engineering' categories in National Institutional Rankings Framework (NIRF) 2021.

The ranking results of educational institutions for this year were launched by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

In place since 2015, NIRF rates educational institutions based on parameters such as&nbsp;teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practices, graduation outcome, outreach and inclusivity and perception. This year, nearly 6,000 institutions had taken part to be evaluated in the rankings.&nbsp;

This is the third consecutive year for IIT-M to win the award in the 'Overall' category, whereas it is the sixth year in a row in the 'Engineering' category. In the newly-launched category of 'Research Institutions', IIT Madras was ranked second in the country, with the top spot going to Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru.

According to the minister, rankings were inevitable and must, as the country had 50,000 educational institutions and 50 million higher education students. He urged other Indian institutes to come forward and take part in the rankings from next time.&nbsp;

IIT Madras had been recognised as an 'Institution of Eminence' (IoE) in September 2019, by the Government of India. As an IoE, IIT Madras has set certain targets for next five, 10 and 15 years in Academics, Research and Development, and Internationalisation.

With IoE funding, IIT Madras is creating 'Centres of Excellence' to encourage inter-disciplinary research that can lead to path-breaking discoveries and innovations.&nbsp;

In February 2021, the Satellite Campus of IIT Madras was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India. Coming up at a cost of one million USD (INR 1 crore) in the first phase, the upcoming 'Discovery Campus', located at Thaiyur near Chennai, will accommodate the growing research infrastructure requirements of the institute.

Recently, the institute also launched a unique online B.Sc. degree in Programming and Data Science, which removes all barriers of age, discipline or geographic location and provides access to a world-class curriculum in data science.&nbsp;

The list, which had 25 Indian universities last year, saw names of 21 universities this year, out of which at least&nbsp;10 fall under Indian Government's Institution of Eminence (IoE) scheme.

Out of the 21 institutes that featured in the list, 14 saw a decline in the ratings.&nbsp;

The decline in the rankings came as a shock, especially since majority of the listed universities are a part of the IoE scheme, which concentrates on bringing the universities to a point of excellence.

The IoE scheme by the Indian Government aims at grouping 10 public and 10 private&nbsp;institutions, and help them by providing them the needed resources and infrastructure to reach the top 500 ranks globally within a decade, followed by top 100. In addition to structural advances, the government also provides Rs 1,000 crore to each university over a period of five years.

Based on six key criteria -- academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per faculty, faculty/student ratio, international faculty ratio and international student ratio -- IIT Bombay&nbsp;ranked 172, followed by IISc at 185th and IIT Delhi at 193.

According to experts, the dip in rankings is due to the student-teacher ratio. The experts believe there is a lot of talent in the country, but the students are not getting proper attention due to high number of students and limited faculty.

QS experts also believe Indian institutes have not been able to find creative ways of teaching and attracting talented students - which institutes of other countries have managed to do.&nbsp;

Indian universities slip in world rankings; IIT Bombay tops India's list

The Supreme Court prohibited the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) across the country from conducting counselling sessions or admitting students into the institutes till further notice this year.

The stay is over an 18-marks bonus being awarded to all students who appeared in the Advanced Joint Entrance Exams this year as the answer key to seven questions had been lost. It is applicable to all the institutes which use the IIT-JEE (Advanced) results for admissions.

A bench of Justices headed by Dipak Misra restrained the high courts from entertaining any writ petition relating to counselling and admissions to the IITs from now on.

It also sought details of the number of cases and petitioners challenging the IIT-JEE 2017 rank list. The apex court had issued notice to the Indian ministry of (MHRD) human resource development on a plea seeking an end to the IIT-JEE 2017 rank list.

The petition filed by IIT aspirant Aishwarya Agarwal, had sought the court&#39;s direction to declare that the action of awarding &quot;bonus marks&quot; to the candidates who had appeared in the JEE (Advanced) 2017 examination, was wrong and violated her right, as well as that of other students.

It sought a direction for preparation of the all-India rank list after rectifying the scores of JEE (Advanced) and also award marks to the candidates who had attempted the answers for the incorrect questions.

As an alternative, the petitioner said the institution should conduct fresh examination and prepare a fresh merit list or grant all students another opportunity to appear in the examination to be conducted next year.

The petition also sought an interim stay on the merit list and the counselling, saying it would cause serious prejudice to the petitioner&nbsp;and other deserving candidates.

The next hearing on the matter will be on Monday, July 10.
