I think the chief minister is trying to stop the protests. That’s why police enforced prohibitory orders today to stop the assembly of protestors," the victim’s mother told the media at the family’s home in North 24 Parganas district.

She told news agency ANI that the hospital officials first told her that her daughter had committed suicide.

"First we got a call from the hospital that your daughter is sick, then the call was disconnected. After that when I called and asked what happened, they told me to come to the hospital. When we called again, the (caller) identified himself as 'assistant super' and said your daughter has committed suicide. She went to duty on Thursday, we got this call on Friday at 10:53 am. When we reached there, we were not allowed to see her, we were allowed to see her at 3 o'clock. Her pants were open, there was only one piece of cloth on her body. Her hand was broken, and blood was coming out of her eyes, and mouth. Just by looking at her, it seemed that someone had murdered her," ANI quoted her as saying.

"I told them it is not suicide, it's a murder. We worked so hard to make our daughter a doctor but she was murdered," she claimed.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the rape and murder of a doctor in state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

In miracle surgery, Indian doctors remove bullet stuck in Yemeni man's head for 18 years

In a miraculous life-saving operation, Indian doctors successfully managed to remove a sewing needle from the lungs of a seven-year-old.

Interestingly, the operation was performed using a magnet that doctors urgently sourced from Chandni Chowk, one of Delhi’s oldest and busiest markets.

The boy was admitted to a private hospital after he developed a high fever and coughed up blood, reported Indian Express. When doctors found out that a needle had made its way to the boy’s left lung, he was transferred to All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)- Delhi on Wednesday (Nov 1).

Indian Express quoted Dr Vishesh Jain, Additional Professor in the Paediatric Department at AIIMS Delhi, as saying that the needle was stuck very deep in the lungs.

“Conventionally, we remove foreign bodies… through bronchoscopy. The challenge here was that it (the needle) was deeper in the lungs which meant less area available for us to use our instruments…,” he said, adding, “We then came up with the idea of using a magnet, which we procured from Chandni Chowk.”

Had the magnet, 4 mm in width and 1.5 mm in thickness, not been available to the doctors on time, “the boy would have required an open-heart surgery,” said Dr Jain.

An Indian-born doctor, who was stuck in the conflict-torn Ukraine for months with his two pets—a jaguar and leopard—has been forced to let go of them.

Gidikumar Patil, a 42-year-old doctor who became a Ukrainian citizen in 2016, had to leave his pets in search of a living in neighbouring Poland after the hospital he was working with was bombed in the Russia-Ukraine war.

Patil bought the animals in 2020 from a zoo in the capital Kyiv. One of the cats is a 24-month-old male "lepjag"— a rare hybrid of a male leopard and a female jaguar — while the other one is a 14-month-old female black panther.

When the Russian invasion began, Patil, who is unmarried, vowed not to leave without his pets. He was working as an orthopaedic doctor in a hospital in Svavtove, a small town in Severodonetsk&nbsp;in the Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine, reports BBC.

But he could not sustain himself as the hospital where he was working closed before being bombed and it became very difficult to feed them.&nbsp;He used to spend $300 on food, which mostly consisted of 5 kg chicken every day after the war began.

Eventually, he spent all of his savings and sold&nbsp;part of his farmland, two apartments, two cars, his motorcycle and camera for a little over $100,000.

Patil left home in Ukraine with a bag carrying his clothes, $100 and a few thousand roubles in cash. He left the cats with a caretaker, paid him $2,400 as three months of wages and decided to cross the border, hoping one day he would earn some money and return.

"As the situation worsened and bomb attacks inched closer to my home and I ran out of money, I decided to leave the cats with a caretaker, cross the border, earn some money and return," Giri told BBC.

But the plan didn’t quite work out the way he thought.

While trying to cross the border, he was detained by Russian soldiers on the suspicion of being a spy and was interrogated for three days.

Only after he convinced them that he is not participating in the war and showed the YouTube videos he used to make with his animals that he was finally let go. But they seized his passport and issued him a paper identification and dropped him off near the Polish border.

After Patil shared his ordeal with the Polish authorities, they gave him a "paper visa" which allows him to stay in the country for 90 days, he said. Then he took a night bus to Warsaw.

As the situation worsens in Ukraine, Patil says he is clueless about when he will return to his cats.

Though his family from the southern Andhra Pradesh state, India, is sending him money, he has been knocking on the doors of Indian embassies to get his cats back.

"I have contacted the Indian embassy in Kyiv a few times on phone and WhatsApp, asking them whether they could take my cats out of Ukraine. They told me they don't deal with wild animals," he was quoted as saying.

“I want my cats back. If the Indian government can pick them up and take them home to a zoo or a forest in India, it is fine. I just want to save them."

A new US study has found that the people who have received the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine are less likely to experience stress. Indian doctors affirm that there is a short term effect of vaccination in boosting mental health as highlighted by the study.However, the Indian doctors emphasized the lack of a similar study in India, which could establish a correlation between vaccination and its impact on mental health.

The research by the Centre for Economic and Social Research (CESR) at the University of Southern California published recently a study in the journal PLOS that stated, "Getting the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine resulted in significant improvements in mental health beyond improvement already achieved since mental distress peaked in spring 2020.

"The researchers analyzed 8,003 adults who were, surveyed at regular intervals between March 10, 2020, and March 31, 2021. It found out that "people who were vaccinated between December 2020 and March 2021 reported decreased mental distress levels in the surveys conducted after receiving the first dose."

Talking about the US study, Dr Nand Kumar, professor and in-charge, ICMR CARE in Neuromodulation for Mental Health, Department of Psychiatry, AIIMS, New Delhi said, "I think they have covered a good sample.

They have covered over 8000 people. It is a good study. But, for vaccines per se, there is no scientific data that says that there is any biological effect of the vaccine that can boost mental health. But vaccine certainly helps in improving mental health in general.

"Dr Kumar noted that it is not easy to compare the people who are vaccinated and who are not vaccinated on their mental health.

"They have looked at the short term effects of vaccination. There have used mental health questionnaire. It's not very easy to compare the people who are vaccinated and who are not vaccinated on their mental health. You need a very robust kind of randomized controlled trial. The short term is fine. A long term study requires logistic support and good funding and design. If the short term effect of the study is concerned, then, I agree with it," he stated.

"Certainly vaccination has improved mental health not directly but indirectly by boosting people confidence about safety that they are vaccinated and they are safe. People have become more outgoing, confident in going out and meeting people. The fear of the pandemic and that they will be affected by the virus has come down significantly. Before vaccination, there were anxiety, apprehension and fear of getting infected, fear of death," Dr Kumar added.

Sharing his observation, Dr Jaswant Jangra, Senior resident Psychiatry at AIIMS New Delhi noted that people have become assured after getting vaccinated against COVID-19.

"The people, I have observed have become assured after getting vaccinated against COVID-19, that they won't get admitted in hospital due to the infection, that their chance of mortality would decrease after taking the COVID- 19 vaccine," said Dr Jangra. He said that he observed that his patients, especially the ones who have completed both the doses of vaccines are now feeling a bit relaxed and their relapses are less. "The stress levels and anxiety level pertaining to COVID- 19 is much less," noted Dr Jangra.

"However, India has not done any specific studies so far and there is a need for such studies to show a positive correlation between vaccination and mental health," he added.

Sharing his insight on the US study, a Psychiatrist at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Dr Rajeev Mehta said, "This is not a direct effect of vaccines rather it's the impact of getting vaccinated. And it is true that it decreases anxiety levels.

"The purpose of the study was to examine short-term changes in mental distress after the first inoculation of the COVID-19 vaccine.

The researchers who undertook the study said the results should be interpreted as the short-term direct effects of getting a first vaccine dose.

"The overall contribution of vaccine uptake on improving mental health outcomes is potentially much larger, as it affects not only those vaccinated but also the unvaccinated," stated the study.

An unvaccinated individual may still benefit from the reduced prevalence rates in the population, may become less worried about loved ones, and may benefit from increased social and economic opportunities if the vaccine rollout results in more social and economic activity due to lower disease risk, added the study.

The experts also talked about the vaccine hesitancy that the people experienced when the vaccine rollout began. People with mental illness were the worst affected.

"People with obsessive fear, anxiety disorder had a lot of stress regarding COVID-19. Initially, they had apprehension before vaccination. They asked me whether we should go for vaccination or not. They stressed contraindications on vaccines. However, I always suggested they go for it," said Dr Jangra.

"A lot of my patients had anxiety whether the jab will produce any result or its just eyewash. Even when people started going for vaccination, there were rumours that soon after getting their vaccine jab, people are got the infection, however, it is false as, it might have been because the people did not follow social distancing, or they mingled with someone who has contracted Covid or has not sanitized their hands properly while waiting in the crowd that came to vaccinate themselves," said Dr Mehta.

Dr Kumar in this regard added, "There were relapses in the mental health patients during the COVID-19 pandemic, as they were not able to meet, there was no socialization, there was intense anxiety among people regarding the disease".

"About two-fifths (38.2 per cent) had anxiety and 10.5 per cent of the participants had depression. Overall, 40.5per cent of the participants had either anxiety or depression. They have covered over 8000 people. It is a good study. But, for vaccines per se, there is no scientific data that says that there is any biological effect of the vaccine that can boost mental health. But vaccine certainly helps in improving mental health in general. "Dr Kumar noted that it is not easy to compare the people who are vaccinated and who are not vaccinated on their mental health. "They have looked at the short term effects of vaccination. There have used mental health questionnaire. It's not very easy to compare the people who are vaccinated and who are not vaccinated on their mental health. You need a very robust kind of randomized controlled trial. The short term is fine. A long term study requires logistic support and good funding and design. If the short term effect of the study is concerned, then, I agree with it," he stated. "Certainly vaccination has improved mental health not directly but indirectly by boosting people confidence about safety that they are vaccinated and they are safe. People have become more outgoing, confident in going out and meeting people. The fear of the pandemic and that they will be affected by the virus has come down significantly. Before vaccination, there were anxiety, apprehension and fear of getting infected, fear of death," Dr Kumar added. An unvaccinated individual may still benefit from the reduced prevalence rates in the population, may become less worried about loved ones, and may benefit from increased social and economic opportunities if the vaccine rollout results in more social and economic activity due to lower disease risk, added the study. Scores of Indian doctors, teachers, entrepreneurs and other professionals are challenging the UK government in court over being denied the right to live and work in Britain.

The professionals brought together under the banner of the 'Highly Skilled Migrants' group, were back opposite Parliament Square in London today to protest against "unjustified" refusals by the UK Home Office of their applications for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) in Britain.

Since their last protest in February, many of the professionals refused ILR have appealed against the Home Office decision in the First Tier Tribunal and Upper Tribunal  the courts which hear immigration appeals.

"Given the Windrush scandal involving innocent migrants being denied their citizenship rights and the new Home Secretary (Sajid Javid) assuring the public that the Home Office will be fair in its immigration decisions, these cases take on an added significance," said Aditi Bhardwaj, one of the convenors of the group.

"The way some of these skilled professionals have been treated is worse than criminals. We have evidence to show that the entire approach of the Home Office is unfair because it is based on how to find a way to deny someone's legitimate application to live and work in the country," she said.

The common factor among all the professionals, from non-European Union countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nigeria, is that they were in the UK on a Tier 1 (General) visa.

They were entitled to apply for ILR or permanent residency status after a minimum of five years' lawful residency in the UK.

While the visa category itself was discontinued in 2010, former applicants were eligible to apply for ILR until April this year if they met the necessary requirements.

But legal experts have noted a pattern of many such applications being turned down on the basis of Rule 322(5), a discretionary rule linked to an applicant's "good character".

The reason for refusal under this rule is most often a discrepancy in the earnings declared to the Home Office and that to the UK's tax department.

While in some cases there may be a legal case of downplaying income for tax reasons or overstating for immigration purposes, experts believe the rule has been used unfairly as a blanket reason for turning down most applications under the Tier 1 (General) route.

"In the last couple of years, this refusal reason seems to have become near-automatic. The Home Office should not be treating legitimate businesspeople as dishonest where there may be an innocent explanation," said Mark Symes, a senior immigration barrister aware of several such cases where the UK Home Office seems to have displayed a "shoot first mentality".

"The main potential for injustice is the seemingly automatic refusal of applications even when there are good explanations provided, for example where an accountant has admitted their own error in writing," he said.

A 31-year-old Indian professional, who underwent a similar situation due to a minor correction in his tax return, is now fighting his case in the UK's Court of Appeal.

The former Heathrow Airport worker's case has the potential of becoming a test case for hundreds of others who have been denied their ILR on similar grounds.

"The judge has indicated that the grounds of appeal have a good prospect of success," said the professional on condition of anonymity.

"My entire life has been on hold for two years, during which I have been unable to work or focus on anything else.

The Home Office is just interested in its immigration targets and finding any means to deny what is our right as skilled professionals who have been working hard and paying our taxes in this country," he said.

His case comes up for its next hearing in June and could pave the way for a wider class action legal challenge.

"It is possible that a class action would be a good way for getting the law and the legal requirement for fairness to be clarified," said Symes.

The group's protest outside Parliament comes just days after newly-appointed Home Secretary Sajid Javid took charge amid an ongoing immigration crisis dubbed the "Windrush scandal" involving hundreds of Caribbean immigrants to Britain, and vowed to "do right" by migrants who had a legitimate right to be in the country.

Javid replaced Amber Rudd who resigned after admitting that she had "inadvertently misled" Parliament over the existence of deportation targets for illegal immigrants.

The UK Home Office claims that any refusals are a direct result of discrepancies in the tax data quoted by applicants.

"Where there has been clear evidence that these applicants have lied on their visa forms, the courts have upheld our refusal decisions in most cases when these decisions are challenged," a Home Office statement said.
