India will participate in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) said on Monday, reversing earlier plans to boycott the event over the absence of shooting as a medal sport.

"The CGF and the entire Commonwealth Sports Movement are delighted India has confirmed their intent to participate at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games..." CGF president Louise Martin said in a statement.

"Following a useful and constructive CGF visit to India in November, we felt confident and reassured that the athletes and sports community of India places huge value and importance on the Commonwealth Games," she added.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had threatened to boycott the Games after shooting -- which supplied 16 of their 66 medals at last year's Gold Coast Games -- was dropped from the Birmingham programme as it is an optional sport for host cities.

As many as 14 Indian <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/a-dozen-dead-fishermen-missing-after-cyclone-bulbul-lashes-bangladesh-and-india-261227">fishermen</a> were arrested by Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly poaching in the country's territorial waters on Saturday, the Navy said on Sunday. 
 
The arrests were made during a patrol conducted in the seas north of the Delft Island, the Navy said in a statement, adding that three trawlers belonging to the fishermen were also seized. 
 
The group of fishermen are expected to be handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries in Jaffna after a medical examination, for further action. 
 
"During Naval patrol conducted to prevent the trespassing of Indian poachers and smuggling activities in the Sri Lankan territorial waters this apprehension was made in the seas north of the Delft island," the statement read. 
 
"The group of Indian fishermen were poaching in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/willing-to-work-with-sri-lanka-to-promote-development-of-hambantota-port-china-269604">Sri Lankan</a> territorial waters when the apprehension was made. Subsequently, the apprehended fishermen were escorted to SLNS 'Uththara' and the seized trawlers were brought to SLNS 'Elara'," the added.
