Then comes Bangladesh, it heavily depends on China for weapons. Bangladesh between 2008 and 2018&nbsp;bought nearly $ 2 billion worth of weapons from China&nbsp;which&nbsp;was almost 72 per cent of Bangladesh’s military acquisitions in that period.

India's other neighbour Myanmar is the third-largest arms export market for China. Since 2013, Myanmar has imported $720 million worth of conventional weapons from&nbsp;China.&nbsp; It&nbsp;includes big-ticket deals like combat aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, frigates and armoured vehicles.

Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Myanmar - they get weapons and billions of dollars in loans from China. They are all part of China’s Belt and Road initiative.

Pakistan has become a testing ground for the militarization of China's BRI. Two years ago, details of a confidential plan had leaked to the press. It was the blueprint of the Pakistan-China military alliance under the garb of CPEC.

According to the proposal, a special economic zone&nbsp;will be used to build fighter jets. It&nbsp;will be a joint project between China and Pakistan. The navigation systems and other military hardware will be built in Pakistan&nbsp;factories.&nbsp;It&nbsp;is again&nbsp;under the military alliance between Islamabad and Beijing.

Sri Lanka is the other ally in the mix. A&nbsp;press release&nbsp;from the website of the Chinese military&nbsp;declares: China, Sri Lanka vow to strengthen defence ties.

The&nbsp;story was filed two years ago. It is an announcement of China's intent. A&nbsp;&nbsp;senior colonel from China&nbsp;said: "China wishes to boost the development of the Belt&nbsp;and Road initiative to strengthen the pragmatic cooperation between the two countries and the two militaries."

The BRI&nbsp;is a military expansion plan under the pretext of economic development&nbsp;since the inception of the Hambantota project there have been fears that China could end up using the port for military purposes.

Those suspicions were confirmed in 2014 when a Chinese submarine and a warship docked in Colombo. Since then, India has kept a tight watch on Hambantota. The Chinese military has kept&nbsp;its distance from Hambantota for now.

But, it has deep links with the Sri Lankan military. Chinese officers have undertaken high-level visits to Sri Lanka. China has also provided military training to Sri Lankan officers.&nbsp;

All of this points to one thing, China's silk&nbsp;road is just a means to an end. It will not just put China in the centre of world trade. But, will also be a way for China to boost its military presence. It is a colonisation project. The 21-century version of the East India company.

In 2019, no such invitation was extended. In 2016, then President Pranab Mukherjee felicitated the Dalai Lama. In 2018, Delhi denied permission for "thank you India"&nbsp;events-- these were to mark 60 years of the Dalai Lama's arrival in India.

Delhi did not allow them, top government officials were told to distance themselves from the occasion.

The reason given was this that it was a very sensitive time for India's relations with China.

It was just after the Doklam standoff and the Wuhan summit with ties with the Dragon on the mend which were&nbsp;strained two years later in the wake of the Galwan Valley clash.&nbsp;

Now in probably the most sensitive time for India-China relations and what better way to send China a message than through engagements with the Dalai Lama.

Some in India want this message to be stronger. Like giving the Dalai Lama India's highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, while others suggest he should feature on the Chinese embassy's address and others say Delhi's&nbsp;Shanti Path should be renamed Dalai Lama Marg.

The government has not ventured beyond Birthday greetings. The message has reached both Dharamsala and Bejing.

Despite tense India-China relations, New Delhi warms up to Dalai Lama on his 85th birthday

Amid the ongoing face-off between Indian and Chinese forces in Ladakh, Chinese army has&nbsp;started pulling out troops from certain areas in the Galwan Valley in Ladakh, sources said.

Chinese Army has moved back tents, vehicles, and troops by 1-2 km from locations where disengagement was agreed upon during the commander-level talks, Indian Army sources told WION.&nbsp;

The disengagement has begun according to an agreement between the Corps Commander's of the two sides, sources told news agency PTI.

Indian Army is monitoring the situation with caution, sources further added.&nbsp;

China's People Liberation Army (PLA) was also seen removing tents and structures at Patrolling Point&nbsp;14 and moving out vehicles from the area.&nbsp;

A similar movement of vehicles was seen at Gogra Hot Spring area too, the sources said.

The tensions between both the Asian giants escalated following a violent face-off on June 15, when 20 personnel of the Indian Army were martyred in the Galwan Valley. The Chinese side also suffered casualties, but it didn't provide the details of it.&nbsp;

In the last few weeks, a series of diplomatic and military-level talks are being taking place between both sides to de-escalate the situation at the border.&nbsp;

The Indian government is reviewing around 50 investment proposals involving Chinese companies under a new screening policy, three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Under new rules announced by India in April, all investments by entities based in neighbouring countries need to be approved by the Indian government, whether for new or additional funding. China is the biggest of these investors and the rules drew criticism from Chinese investors and Beijing, which called the policy discriminatory.

The new investment rules were aimed at curbing opportunistic takeovers during the coronavirus outbreak. However, industry executives say a deterioration in bilateral relations since a clash along the countries' contested border last month, in which 20 Indian soldiers were killed, could further delay approvals.

"Various clearances are required. We are being a bit more cautious as one would imagine," said a senior Indian government official in New Delhi, when asked about the impact on investment applications since the border clash.

India's industries department under the commerce ministry, which drafted the new policy, did not respond to a request for comment.

The sources declined to name the companies whose investments are pending approvals, due to confidentiality concerns.

The official, and two other sources, said about 40-50 applications involving funding from Chinese investors have been filed since the rule change and are currently under review.

One of the sources said that multiple Indian government agencies, including the Indian consulates in China, have been communicating with investors and their representatives to seek clarifications on the proposals.

Alok Sonker, a partner at Indian law firm Krishnamurthy &amp; Co, said at least 10 Chinese clients had sought his advice in recent weeks for investing in India, but were waiting for more clarity on the policy outlook in India.&nbsp;

"Uncertainty in timelines for the investment approval is dissuading parties, both Indian and Chinese, from proceeding with business as usual," Sonker said.

Last week India banned 59, mostly Chinese, mobile apps including Bytedance's TikTok and Tencent's&nbsp;WeChat, in its strongest move yet targeting China in the online space since the border crisis erupted last month. The move has potentially dented big Chinese businesses' expansion plans for the South Asian market.

Both militaries had talks on June 6, June 22 and June 30 on disengagement modalities. It is after June 22, thinning of troops was seen. The June 22 talks lasted for 11 hours while June 30 lasted for 12 hours.&nbsp;

Since early May 2020, the Chinese side has been hindering India's normal patrolling pattern the LAC area in Ladakh.&nbsp;

In Mid-May, the Chinese side attempted to transgress the LAC in other areas of the Western Sector of the India-China border areas and this was met with an appropriate response by Indian forces.

The two sides will actively cooperate with the militaries of the two countries to implement the outcomes of the two rounds of military-level talks on June 6 and June 22. The two sides agreed to strengthen communication and coordination through military and diplomatic channels and peacefully resolve relevant issues in border areas through bilateral dialogue and consultation, it said.

"The two sides agreed to strictly abide by the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries and a series of agreements signed by the two sides, further strengthen confidence-building measures in the military field and jointly safeguard peace and tranquility in the border areas," the statement said.

The Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on Border Affairs between China and India was also attended by representatives from the foreign affairs, defence, immigration and other departments of the two countries.

The talks took place two days after Chinese and Indian armies arrived at a "mutual consensus" to "disengage" from all the friction points in eastern Ladakh.

On June 15, the violent clashes in Galwan Valley left 20 Indian Army personnel dead, significantly escalating the already volatile situation in the region. Though Beijing has not revealed its casualty figure, the official media editorials have said that China too suffered casualties.

The European Union (EU) on Wednesday urged India and China to show restraint and engage in military de-escalation and continue holding a dialogue.

"In light of recent worrying developments along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) between India and China, we encourage both sides to show restraint and to engage in military de-escalation, as well as to continue the dialogue," Virginie Battu-Henriksson, EU Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy said in a statement.

"This is crucial for building trust and reaching a peaceful solution which is essential to preserving peace and stability in the region," the spokesperson added.

The British High Commission on Wednesday also encouraged dialogue between India and China.

"Clearly these are concerning reports. We encourage China and India to engage in dialogue on issues relating to the border - violence is in no-one's interest," said British High Commission spokesperson.

Australia has been critical of China.&nbsp;

Australian envoy to India -- Barry o'Farrell -- said, "Peace, stability and prosperity are not words that China understands," adding, "Beijing's aggression in South China Sea is not consistent with consensus building and dialogue."

The United Nations has also expressed concern. It has asked India and China to practise maximum restraint.

Indian intercepts have revealed that the Chinese side suffered 43 casualties including dead and seriously injured in the violent clash.

Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar conveyed a clear and unequivocal tough message to Chinese counterpart Wang Yi during a telephonic conversation on Tuesday that what happened in Galwan was a "pre-mediated and planned action that was directly responsible for the resulting violence and casualties."

Twenty Indian Army personnel were killed in a clash with Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley on Monday night, the biggest military confrontation in over five decades that has significantly escalated the already volatile border standoff between the two countries. A large number of Indian and Chinese troops have been engaged in an eyeball-to-eyeball situation in Galwan Valley and certain other areas of eastern Ladakh for the last five weeks, including in Pangong Tso, Galwan Valley, Demchok and Daulat Beg Oldie in eastern Ladakh. To this end, other countries and international organisation have called for peace between the nations. The United States said it was closely following the situation at the Line of Actual Control. "Both India and China have expressed a desire to de-escalate, and we support a peaceful resolution of the current situation," a State Department spokesperson said. The European Union (EU) on Wednesday urged India and China to show restraint and engage in military de-escalation and continue holding a dialogue. "In light of recent worrying developments along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) between India and China, we encourage both sides to show restraint and to engage in military de-escalation, as well as to continue the dialogue," Virginie Battu-Henriksson, EU Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy said in a statement. "This is crucial for building trust and reaching a peaceful solution which is essential to preserving peace and stability in the region," the spokesperson added. The British High Commission on Wednesday also encouraged dialogue between India and China. "Clearly these are concerning reports. We encourage China and India to engage in dialogue on issues relating to the border - violence is in no-one's interest," said British High Commission spokesperson. Australia has been critical of China. Australian envoy to India -- Barry o'Farrell -- said, "Peace, stability and prosperity are not words that China understands," adding, "Beijing's aggression in South China Sea is not consistent with consensus building and dialogue." The United Nations has also expressed concern. It has asked India and China to practise maximum restraint. Indian intercepts have revealed that the Chinese side suffered 43 casualties including dead and seriously injured in the violent clash. Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar conveyed a clear and unequivocal tough message to Chinese counterpart Wang Yi during a telephonic conversation on Tuesday that what happened in Galwan was a "pre-mediated and planned action that was directly responsible for the resulting violence and casualties." In a strong message to China, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said earlier today that India wants peace but is capable of giving a befitting reply, if instigated.
