India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval is set to travel to Beijing for the 25th round of India-China Special Representative talks on the long-running boundary dispute.

Doval and his Chinese counterpart, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, are expected to hold crucial discussions on the 3,488-kilometre India-China border dispute. The Special Representative mechanism was established in 2003 to address the complex boundary question between the two countries.

The latest round carries added significance as it comes ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s expected visit to New Delhi for the BRICS Summit. The outcome of the Doval-Wang talks could help shape the diplomatic atmosphere surrounding the high-profile visit.

India has repeatedly stressed that peace and tranquillity along the border are essential for the broader development of bilateral relations with China.

The meeting is also significant because it is the first Special Representatives dialogue in roughly a year. The previous round was held in New Delhi in August 2025, when both sides reaffirmed the importance of the 2005 agreement as a reference point for resolving the boundary issue.

In parliament this week, India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh confirmed an effort by China to intrude into Indian territory in Tawang on December 9. "Chinese troops tried to transgress the LAC in Yangtse, Tawang, and unilaterally change the status quo," Rajnath Singh said.

There was a physical fight between the two sides but Indian soldiers "compelled the Chinese soldiers to return to their posts", pushing back in a "firm and resolute manner", Rajnath Singh added.

He said there were "minor injuries to a few personnel from both sides" and the two sides "immediately disengaged from the area".

The India-China ties began plunging to their lowest after the Galwan incident of June 2020. The standoff along Line of Actual Control (LAC) at two friction points continues despite months of multiple-rounds of Corps-Commander-level discussions.&nbsp;

The unresolved border between India and China runs for over 3400 kms and has at least 25 points of dispute, and is referred to as Line of Actual Control. Yangtse too is reported to be a repeated target by the Chinese for intrusion attempts.&nbsp;

Tawang skirmish: Old video of an India-China clash goes viral

The 17-year-old Indian from Arunachal Pradesh state, who was kidnapped by the Chinese armed forces and subsequently returned, has claimed that he was subjected to various forms of torture, including electrocution.

Speaking to Indian news outlet The Print, Miriam Taron recalled his ordeal after he was abducted by China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) on January 18.

“They blindfolded me and took me to their camp, where they kicked me and — using a stick that gives electric shocks, the kind you see in movies — electrocuted me, first on my butt and then my back,” he said.

Earlier, Miram’s father Opang Taron also made similar claims, saying that his son seemed to be “mentally disturbed”.

“Till minutes before Miram was handed over to the Indian Army, the PLA kept him blindfolded with his hands tied,” Opang had told the media.

“One day he (Miram) was kicked in the back thrice by the PLA personnel. But he was provided food properly,” he added.

On January 27, Miram was handed over to the Indian Army at Damai Border Personnel Meeting Point—which is located along the disputed border between India and China.

The Indian Army after following the formalities handed over Miram to his family four days after the PLA handed over him.

Miram, who went missing while hunting along the India-China border since January 18, was accorded a grand reception by the Tuting (Zido) villagers.

The Chinese Army allegedly abducted Miram from the Indian territory where China had constructed a 3-4 km road in 2018.

Miram `s friend Jhonny Yaying, who managed to escape, reported the matter to the authorities and brought it to the notice of MP Tapir Gao.

Arunachal Pradesh shares a 1,080-km border with China.

A top US congress mandated panel has said the Chinese government had "planned" the June Galwan incident even as Beijing ramped up a "coercion campaign" against its neighbours. The Galwan incident saw aggressive action by Chinese soldiers in Galwan valley in Eastern Ladakh, resulting in the death of 20 Indian soldiers.

The just-released annual report of the United States-China Economic and Security Review Commission (USCC) said, "Some evidence suggested the Chinese government had planned the incident, potentially including the possibility for fatalities".

USCC was formed in 2000 and investigates national security and trade issues between China and the US. It also provides recommendations to US Congress for legislative and administrative action, on Beijing.

While the "exact motivations behind the Chinese government’s provocative behaviour" on the Line of actual control (LAC) "this year remain unclear", the report said, the "proximate cause" of the clash appeared to be India’s construction of a "strategic access road to support troops" stationed at the border areas.

It highlighted how several weeks prior to the clash Chinese "Defense Minister Wei made his statement encouraging Beijing to use fighting to promote stability" and how an editorial in Chinese communist party mouthpiece Global Times warned that India would suffer a “devastating blow” to its trade and economic ties with China if it got “involved in the U.S.-China rivalry.”

Beijing itself has been engaged in building extensive infrastructure along the Line of actual control, and in the aftermath of the clashes asserted sovereignty over the entire Galwan Valley which was a new claim. Several months on, the China India standoff continues, with Beijing refusing to remove the troops it had sent.

The report said, "Beijing ramped up its multiyear coercion campaign against its neighbours, provoking military or paramilitary standoffs with countries from Japan to India and much of Southeast Asia.”

This year saw China amidst the COVID pandemic being aggressive not only with India but with countries like Japan, Australia, Taiwan, UK, Canada. Since the standoff, and the aggressive action, New Delhi has taken several measures such as banning Chinese apps, restrictions on state-run companies to engage with Chinese tech companies, and with Australia and Japan working on alternate resilient supply chains.

The report also mentions Pakistan saying, Chinese forces have "secured access and potential naval basing facilities in Pakistan".

On Monday, the Chinese defence minister was on a visit to Islamabad, and the close ties between Islamabad and Beijing are well known.
