India on Friday removed export curbs on specified quantities of certain commodities like eggs, potatoes, onions, rice, wheat flour, sugar, and dal for Maldives in the current fiscal year.
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) in a notification said these exports have been permitted to Maldives under the bilateral trade agreement between countries during 2024-25.

"Export of eggs, potatoes, onions, rice, wheat flour, sugar, dal, stone aggregate and river sand has been permitted to the Maldives... The export of these items to Maldives will be exempted from any existing or future restriction/prohibition on export," the DGFT said.

In general, there is either a restriction or prohibition on exports of these goods.

The specified quantity allowed includes potatoes (21,513.08 tonnes), onions (35,749.13 tonnes), rice (1,24,218.36 tonnes), wheat flour (1,09,162.96 tonnes), sugar (64,494.33 tonnes), dal (224.48 tonnes), stone aggregate (one million tonnes) and river sand (one million tonnes).

It said that for the exports of river sand and stone aggregate, CAPEXIL (a body to promote the export of chemical and allied products) will ensure that the suppliers/extractors have obtained appropriate clearances and mining of the sand is not undertaken in the coastal regulation zone area, which is prohibited under the coastal regulation zone notification.

Exporters have to obtain necessary environmental clearances from the designated nodal authority of respective state governments from where sand is obtained.

Through a post on social media platform X, the Indian High Commissioner said that this was being done "under a unique bilateral mechanism" under which the quotas for each of these items have been revised upwards.

"The approved quantities are the highest since this arrangement came into effect in 1981," the notice by the mission said.

The announcement comes amid a diplomatic row between the two countries since November last year when President Mohamed Muizzu, known for his pro-China leanings, took the oath, and within hours demanded India to repatriate its 88 military personnel from his country.

The relations further deteriorated when three Maldivian officials made crass comments after Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted photos and videos of the Lakshadweep Islands, resulting in a heavy backlash from Indians, including many celebrities. #BoycottMaldives campaign resulted in a significant decline in Indian tourists to the island nation too.

The 1981 India and Maldives trade agreement provides for the export of essential commodities.

"India emerged as Maldives' second largest trade partner in 2022 and the largest in 2023. Indian imports from the Maldives primarily comprise scrap metals, while Indian exports to the Maldives include a variety of engineering and industrial products like drugs and pharmaceuticals, radar apparatus, rock boulders, aggregates, cement and agricultural produce, such as rice, spices, fruits, vegetables and poultry produce etc," the notice said.

According to Friday's announcement, there has also been an increase of 5 per cent in the quotas for eggs, potatoes, onions, sugar, rice, wheat flour and dal (pulses).

Last year too, India continued the export of rice, sugar and onions to the Maldives despite a worldwide ban on export of these items from India.

"India remains strongly committed to supporting human-centric development in the Maldives, as part of its Neighbourhood First policy," it noted.

The quota for river sand and stone aggregates, crucial items for the booming construction industry in the Maldives, has been increased by 25 per cent to 10,00,000 MT each, it added.

Surrounded by the ocean, the islands in the Maldives and the many atolls don't have enough river sand to support their construction industry, hence the need for importing sand and stone aggregates to the country.

The bilateral trade between the two countries has increased to USD 973.37 million in 2022-23 from about USD 740 million in 2021-22.

The EC has asked the Delhi Minister to respond to the notice by Monday (Apr 8) at noon.

"Criticism of other political parties, when made, shall be confined to their policies and programme, past record and work. "The political parties and leaders shall not make false statements, utterances without factual basis aimed at misleading the voters. Criticism of other parties or their workers on the basis of unverified allegations or on distortions shall be avoided," it added.

The poll panel, in its notice, also added that it received a complaint on April 4 from the BJP that Atishi made "misleading and unverified statements" during her press conference on April 2.

Atishi a day after declaring that she would make an explosive expose, on Tuesday (Apr 2) accused BJP of trying to coerce her into joining them or face arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Marking the 40th anniversary of the historic spaceflight of the first Indian cosmonaut, Rakesh Sharma, aboard the Soviet spacecraft Soyuz T-11, Russian Deputy Chief of the Mission in Delhi, Roman Babushkin, has hailed India’s remarkable achievements in space exploration. He labelled India as a “space superpower” owing to its successful endeavours in space, notably the recent Chandrayaan 3 mission.

The Russian diplomat said, “Now India, having developed its robust national space programme by right enjoys the status of a space superpower, well reputed, reliable and preferred global partner for space science and satellite launching.”&nbsp;

The Soyuz T-11 mission, which lifted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on April 2, 1984, carried Rakesh Sharma as the first Indian astronaut into space. Cosmonauts Yuri Malyshev, Rakesh Sharma, and Gennady Strekalov – all three were awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union and the Ashok Chakra on return to Earth.&nbsp;

Notably, the Soviet Union played a pivotal role in launching India’s first satellite, Aryabhata, in 1975, followed by the deployment of the Bhaskara satellite in 1979. Babushkin underscored the ongoing collaboration between Russia and India in space exploration, particularly emphasising Moscow’s support for the ambitious Gaganyaan mission.

“The Russian state cooperation Roscosmos and the ISRO are deeply involved in the implementation of the Indian Gaganyaan mission by training astronauts, providing assistance in the development of a manned spacecraft, supplying like support and crew escape systems, flight suits, couches, rate sensors, cooperating on thermal protecting coating, applied materials, and space medicine capacity building,” Babushkin stated, emphasising the collaborative efforts between Russia and India in advancing the Gaganyaan mission.

He said, ‘it has been very fruitful cooperation with Russia..’ Sharma’s message echoed the sentiment of deep-seated collaboration between the two nations in the space sector.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's wife Sunita on Monday (Apr 1) hit out at the Centre stating that "the people of the country will answer to this dictatorship."

"If the investigation was over, then why has he been sent to jail? The people of the country will answer to this dictatorship," she said.

Her remarks came after the Rouse Avenue court extended the AAP supremo's judicial custody till April 15.

<h2>'Rabri Devi in making'</h2>

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri took a jibe at Sunita Kejriwal and compared her with Lalu Yadav's wife, Rabri Devi, who took over as the Bihar CM when her husband was imprisoned in a corruption case.

"A Rabri Devi is in the making. I have already said 3-4 times in the past 7-10 days that 'Rabri Devi' will come forward. I mean to say that Sunita Kejriwal will come forward now," Puri said.

He also took a dig at the AAP chief stating that he could now conduct cabinet meetings inside the jail with his fellow party leaders Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh.

"Can any government-run from behind the bars?... Here is a government which has three ministers already behind bars. They have a quorum, they can have cabinet meetings behind bars," he said.&nbsp;

The latest hearing in the Delhi Court took place after Kejriwal's previous duration of custody granted to the Enforcement Directorate came to an end.&nbsp;

Kejriwal was produced in the court of Special Judge Kaveri Baweja.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's wife Sunita on Monday (Apr 1) hit out at the Centre stating that "the people of the country will answer to this dictatorship." "If the investigation was over, then why has he been sent to jail? The people of the country will answer to this dictatorship," she said. Her remarks came after the Rouse Avenue court extended the AAP supremo's judicial custody till April 15. 'Rabri Devi in making' The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri took a jibe at Sunita Kejriwal and compared her with Lalu Yadav's wife, Rabri Devi, who took over as the Bihar CM when her husband was imprisoned in a corruption case. The latest hearing in the Delhi Court took place after Kejriwal's previous duration of custody granted to the Enforcement Directorate came to an end. Kejriwal was produced in the court of Special Judge Kaveri Baweja. The ED sought a 15-day custody and told Judge Baweja that they may require further custody at a later date. The Singapore-flagged container ship Dali was departing from Baltimore on Tuesday (Mar 26) with a full cargo en route to Sri Lanka when it hit the concrete pier which was supporting the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore.

After seconds, the entire bridge fell into 50 feet of frigid water flowing below. Just before the incident, a Mayday call was issued by the ship as it warned that it had lost power and the authorities scrambled to close traffic movement on the bridge to save lives.

Meanwhile, divers on Wednesday (Mar 27) recovered the bodies of two of the six workers missing since the ship smashed into the bridge after being struck by a faltering cargo freighter.

The bodies, as per Reuters news agency, were found in the Patapsco River.

Maryland State Police Colonel Roland Butler confirmed that the bodies of Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, 35, of Baltimore, and Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, 26, of nearby Dundalk, were discovered in a red pickup truck.

The truck was submerged in about 25 feet (7.62 metres) near the mid-section of the fallen bridge.

The four other workers are still missing and are presumed dead given the length of time that has elapsed since the bridge collapse and the frigid temperature&nbsp;of the water. According to officials, the six workers also included immigrants from Honduras and El Salvador.

Scientists in a new discovery have suggested that a 1.8-kilometre-wide depression, which is called Luna structure, may have been created by the impact of the largest meteorite to have hit Earth in the last 50,000 years.&nbsp;

The meteorite, which is like a fireball, may have triggered wildfires and massive shockwaves that are likely to have spread in an area where the Indus Valley civilisation's people were living thousands of years ago.

“It would have been definitely equivalent to a nuclear bomb, but without the radioactive fallout,” said Gordon Osinski, who works at Western University in Canada, as reported by NewScientist.

The locals in the Indian state of Gujarat have been aware of the 1.8-kilometre-wide crater, which is known as the Luna structure.&nbsp;

<h2>High proportion of iridium present in the soil, says geochemical analysis&nbsp;</h2>

A geochemical analysis found a high proportion of iridium present in the soil, which suggested that the impact must have been left by an iron meteorite.&nbsp;

David King, who is from the Auburn University in Alabama and was not part of the study, said that although the geochemical analysis appeared to match, the team has not yet completely proven that it is a crater.&nbsp;

"To do this, they would need to find super-heated rocks that melted due to the energy of the impact," he said.

“It’s not that I’m suspicious that this isn’t a crater, but it would be nice to have the standard line of evidence in shocked materials,” King added.

Sajinkumar, along with his colleagues, were able to dig a trench in the dry season but he said that they plan to look for shocked materials and said that the study is “the tip of the iceberg”.

Even though he lacked the shocked materials, Osinski said that he strongly believes the Luna structure is an impact crater because of the other evidence.

“The authors have done a great job with the samples that they have,” he said.&nbsp;

A United States-based webcomic which is infamous for making politically incorrect cartoons, was slammed by netizens as well as Indian economist Sanjeev Sanyal, on Wednesday (Mar 27) for posting a clip which many called 'racist'. The cartoon by Foxford Comics of the all-Indian crew which was on board the DALI cargo vessel that collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, on Tuesday, has invited public wrath.&nbsp;

<h2>About the cartoon</h2>

The cartoon shows the Indian crew members wearing just loin cloth and standing in what looks like the inside of the ship in muddy water as the vessel eventually approaches and collides with the bridge.&nbsp;

The cartoon which has since garnered 2.6 million views on X was criticised by hundreds of people with many calling it 'racist', while also pointing out that the ship was likely being steered by a local American, according to the country’s laws.&nbsp;

This was also highlighted by Indian economist and member of the Economic Advisory Council to prime minister, Sanyal. “At the time that the ship hit the bridge, it would have had a local pilot,” he said.&nbsp;

“In any case, the crew had warned the authorities which is why the casualties were relatively few (for such a disaster). But, hey, why give up a chance to do racist cartoons,” Sanyal added.&nbsp;

He added, “As a result, local authorities were able to close the bridge to traffic before the bridge was struck, which undoubtedly saved lives,” said the US president.&nbsp;

The cartoon by Foxford Comics of the all-Indian crew which was on board the DALI cargo vessel that collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, on Tuesday, has invited public wrath. India has lodged a strong demarche with the United States over the US State Department's recent comments concerning the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. US Acting Deputy CdA Gloria Berbena was summoned by India's Ministry of External Affairs and handed over a strongly worded demarche. The summoning lasted for 45 minutes.

India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), in a statement, said, "We take strong objection to the remarks of the Spokesperson of the US State Department about certain legal proceedings in India."

"In diplomacy, states are expected to be respectful of the sovereignty and internal affairs of others. This responsibility is even more so in case of fellow democracies. It could otherwise end up setting unhealthy precedents. India’s legal processes are based on an independent judiciary which is committed to objective and timely outcomes. Casting aspersions on that is unwarranted," it added.&nbsp;

Earlier, the US State Department, in response to an inquiry from a news agency had said, "We encourage a fair, transparent, and timely legal process for Chief Minister Kejriwal."

This marked the second instance of a foreign government commenting on Kejriwal's arrest, following earlier comments from Germany.

Over the weekend, India had responded by summoning the German Deputy Chief of Mission and lodged a strong protest.

The MEA emphasised that such remarks amounted to interference in India's judicial process and undermined the independence of its judiciary.&nbsp;

India summons US diplomat over Washington's statement on Arvind Kejriwal's arrest

Sri Lanka’s former president Maithripala Sirisena on Monday appeared before the crime investigation department to record a statement on his recent remarks on the 2019 Easter Sunday suicide bombings that he was “aware” of the masterminds of the attacks that killed 270 people, including 11 Indians.

Sirisena, 72, was president between 2015 January and 2019 November. He had previously denied any knowledge of the attacks on April 21, 2019.

Nihal Thalduwa, police spokesperson, told reporters that a five-hour-long statement was recorded.

Sirisena arrived around 10:30 in the morning and left around 4 pm, the police said.

Sirisena making a public statement in the central town of Kandy on Wednesday said “he was aware of the masterminds of the attacks.: “I know who did it”, he said.

The Opposition National People’s Power lawyers met the Attorney General on Monday and urged him to issue an order to arrest Sirisena.

“It is a crime to conceal information,” Sunil Watagala, an NPP lawyer said.

The Catholic Church, rights groups and Opposition parties are united in their cry for Sirisena’s arrest.

Sirisena had said that he received information three weeks ago and that he would be willing to testify in court on camera. He said that if he were to make an open court statement, his life and his family could be in danger.

Nine suicide bombers belonging to the local Islamist extremist group National Thawheed Jamaat (NTJ) linked to ISIS carried out a series of blasts that tore through three churches and as many luxury hotels in Sri Lanka.

However, the timing of the bombing ahead of the 2019 presidential election was the subject of conspiracy theories which suggested that the Rajapaksa brothers then in opposition had taken political advantage of the attacks.

Sirisena was accused and found guilty in a special presidential panel he appointed as the country’s president. The findings blamed him for inaction on the prior intelligence received on the attacks.

Later, he was ordered to pay Sri Lankan rupee 100 million to the relatives of the victims of the attack as compensation. He has so far paid only a part of it.

At a time when the whole of India is celebrating Holi, the Festival of Colours, the soldiers of the Border Security Force, Indian Army, Sashastra Seema Bal and Central Reserve Police Force posted in the Kashmir Valley are spreading the message of brotherhood and unity. Away from their homes, these soldiers make sure to celebrate with full fervour and joy. Whether it's the BSF Frontier of the Kashmir Division, who are manning the Line of Control or the soldiers of Sashastra Seema Bal who take care of the operational duties, every camp in the Valley has organised the Holy celebrations for troops. While the BSF celebrated at their Humhama BSF Headquarters in Budgam district, the soldiers of Sashastra Seema Bal celebrated at the Batamaloo Camp. In every camp, the jawans from different parts of the country were seen celebrating the festival of colours with each other like a family. These festivals are also days when there are no barriers of hierarchy, and all celebrate together. "BSF has a tradition of celebrating all festivals from every religion with a lot of joy. This is a day when we don't follow any hierarchy and get together with each other. BSF is a family that celebrates all festivals together. It helps in taking away our stress as well. I want to tell the nation that our soldiers are guarding the borders, and we are always ready to tackle any situation on the LoC and make sure our country stays safe,'' said Ashok Yadav, IG BSF Frontier, Kashmir Division. The celebrations were attended by soldiers from all religions. It also sets an example of brotherhood among the soldiers and sends a message of unity to the citizens of the country. ''The whole country is celebrating the festival of Holi with our family that is our colleagues here. We celebrate all the festivals like this here. The holy month of Ramadan is on too and we are organising Iftaar also. We celebrate all festivals together and with unity. We will keep celebrating all the festivals like this. We are away from our families, but here we live like a family in these camps. We make sure to take care of each other,'' said Rohit A, Commandant, SSB. The soldiers away from their homes make sure to celebrate all the festivals with their colleagues as families. ''We are extremely happy about the festival of colours Holi. We pray for peace and colourful Holi for everyone and as you can see civilians have also come and joined us to celebrate the festival today. We feel like we are at home only. This is no less than our home as we spend most of the year here only. I have been here for three years and am enjoying the festival with full fervour. India's Supreme Court on Thursday (Mar 21) paused the central government’s March 20 notification to set up a Fact Check Unit (FCU) under the Information Technology (IT) rules till the Bombay High Court delivers a verdict on petitions challenging the 2023 amendment to the IT Rules.

<h2>Supreme Court stays FCU</h2>

The apex court stayed the Centre’s notification to set up an FCU under the Press Information Bureau (PIB), saying that the challenge to the validity of the unit involves a “serious constitutional question” and its impact on “free speech and expression would need to be analysed by the High Court.” &nbsp;

The decision comes a day after the IT ministry notified the FCU under the PIB as a statutory body that would be tasked with flagging what it perceives as fake news related to the Indian government and its agencies on social media.&nbsp;

The bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud set aside the March 11 order of the Bombay HC which refused to grant a stay on setting up of the FCU.&nbsp;

“We are of the considered view that questions before the HC deal with core questions on Article 19(1)(a) of the constitution,” the three-judge bench also comprising Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra said in its order.&nbsp;

It added, “We are of the view that notification dated March 20, 2024, after rejection of application of interim relief, needs to be stayed.”&nbsp;

<h2>About the petition filed against FCU</h2>

The decision by the apex court comes after the Bombay HC declined to stop the Centre from notifying the unit based on the petition filed by stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra and the Editors Guild of India.

Senior Advocate Darius Khambata representing the petitioner (Kamra) questioned why is the FCU only for the Centre and not for everyone as an independent body if the objective is to prevent fake news since it affects everybody.&nbsp;

Khambata argued that the FCU cannot be dependent on the government’s discretion on what constitutes false or not.&nbsp;

He also noted that with the elections right around the corner, the FCU could be used as a way to control and filter what information reaches out to the voters.&nbsp;

The senior advocate also pointed out that FCU was notified yesterday but was not done for an entire year.&nbsp;

Similarly, lawyers representing the Editor’s Guild stressed that a government-controlled FCU “strikes at the core” of Article 19(1)(a) of the Indian Constitution which guarantees the fundamental right of free speech and expression.&nbsp;

India's merchandise exports are poised to surge to $450 billion by the end of this fiscal year, despite facing geopolitical hurdles such as the Red Sea crisis, as stated by Ashwani Kumar, the newly elected president of the Federation of Indian Export Organisation (FIEO). <o:p></o:p>

Despite challenges, Kumar remains optimistic about achieving this milestone, highlighting the strength of the exporting community and the need for strategic interventions to address ongoing challenges. <o:p></o:p>

Export growth amid challenges<o:p></o:p>

Despite geopolitical tensions and external disruptions, India's merchandise exports showcased resilience, witnessing an increase to $395 billion from April-February 2023-24. <o:p></o:p>

Notably, this growth trajectory persisted despite the Red Sea crisis, a tight monetary stance by developed nations, and fluctuations in commodity prices. <o:p></o:p>

Kumar attributed this resilience to the steadfast determination of the exporting community, highlighting their ability to navigate challenges since the Russia-Ukraine conflict. <o:p></o:p>

Despite the odds, exports surged by about 12 per cent in February, reaching $41.40 billion, driven by key sectors such as engineering goods, electronics, pharmaceuticals, and petroleum products.<o:p></o:p>

Addressing sectoral needs for growth<o:p></o:p>

Kumar noted the role of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in driving India's export ambitions, aiming to achieve a target of $1 trillion in goods exports by 2030. <o:p></o:p>

Recognising the challenges faced by MSMEs, including access to credit and marketing support, Kumar advocated for proactive measures to facilitate their growth. <o:p></o:p>

He urged financial institutions to extend easy and low-cost credit to MSMEs, acknowledging them as the backbone of the economy. <o:p></o:p>

Additionally, Kumar spoke on the importance of concluding free trade agreements, such as those with the UK and Oman, to stimulate outbound shipments and unlock new opportunities for exporters.<o:p></o:p>

Trade deficit dynamics<o:p></o:p>

Despite the surge in exports, India's merchandise trade deficit widened to $18.71 billion in February, compared to $17.49 billion in the previous month. <o:p></o:p>

This imbalance stems from imports outpacing exports in value terms, exacerbated by the Red Sea crisis. <o:p></o:p>

Goods imports rose to $60.11 billion in February, reflecting an increase from $54.41 billion in January, as per commerce ministry data. <o:p></o:p>

India's exports set to hit $450 billion despite Red Sea crisis, FIEO president optimistic

Only seven countries worldwide are meeting the international air quality standard set by the World Health Organization (WHO) when it comes to airborne particles, known as PM2.5, according to a report by Swiss company&nbsp;IQAir.&nbsp;

The deterioration of air pollution in certain regions is attributed to an uptick in economic activities and the harmful effects of smoke from wildfires.

Out of 134 countries and regions examined in the report, only Australia, Estonia, Finland, Grenada, Iceland, Mauritius, and New Zealand adhere to the WHO guideline limit for tiny airborne particles, known as PM2.5.

PM2.5 is the fine particulate matter emitted by vehicles, industries, and other sources. PM 2.5 particles, smaller than the width of a human hair, pose severe health risks when inhaled, contributing to various health problems and fatalities.

How to minimise the impact of&nbsp;air pollution</a>

While overall air quality has improved compared to previous centuries, certain areas still grapple with hazardous pollution levels.

Pakistan tops the list as the most polluted country, with PM2.5 levels exceeding the WHO standard by over 14 times.

Following Pakistan, India, Tajikistan, and Burkina Faso are among the most affected nations.

Even in affluent and rapidly developing countries, efforts to mitigate air pollution face challenges.

Canada, historically known for clean air, experienced heightened PM2.5 levels due to unprecedented wildfires, while China's progress in air quality improvement was hindered by economic resurgence following the COVID-19 pandemic.

<h2>Delhi named world's&nbsp;most polluted capital</h2>

The Indian capital city&nbsp;New Delhi&nbsp;once again gained the title of being&nbsp;the most polluted capital city in the world last year, according to an IQAir report.&nbsp;

New Delhi's&nbsp;annual population-weighted PM2.5&nbsp;concentration in 2023 stood at&nbsp;92.7µg/m3 reportedly making it the&nbsp;world’s most polluted national capital.

According to the report, the second most polluted capital was Dhaka (80.2 µg/m3), followed by a distinct third&nbsp;Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso with&nbsp;46.6µg/m3.&nbsp;

<h2>Experts&nbsp;concerned&nbsp;</h2>

Glory Dolphin Hammes, North America chief executive of IQAir, expressed concerns over the regression in addressing air pollution, emphasising the urgent need for proactive measures.

Worldwide, air pollution claims an estimated 7 million lives annually, disproportionately affecting developing nations reliant on polluting fuels for various purposes.

The report underscores the necessity for nations to prioritise sustainable urban planning, adopt cleaner energy sources, and implement measures to mitigate the impact of wildfires. Additionally, improved air quality monitoring systems are crucial in addressing this global health crisis.

Only seven countries worldwide are meeting the international air quality standard set by the World Health Organization (WHO) when it comes to airborne particles, known as PM2.

Only seven countries worldwide are meeting the international air quality standard set by the World Health Organization (WHO) when it comes to airborne particles, known as PM2.5, according to a report by Swiss company IQAir. The deterioration of air pollution in certain regions is attributed to an uptick in economic activities and the harmful effects of smoke from wildfires. Out of 134 countries and regions examined in the report, only Australia, Estonia, Finland, Grenada, Iceland, Mauritius, and New Zealand adhere to the WHO guideline limit for tiny airborne particles, known as PM2.5. PM2.5 is the fine particulate matter emitted by vehicles, industries, and other sources. PM 2.5 particles, smaller than the width of a human hair, pose severe health risks when inhaled, contributing to various health problems and fatalities. Also read: Breathing easier! How to minimise the impact of air pollution While overall air quality has improved compared to previous centuries, certain areas still grapple with hazardous pollution levels. Pakistan tops the list as the most polluted country, with PM2.5 levels exceeding the WHO standard by over 14 times. Following Pakistan, India, Tajikistan, and Burkina Faso are among the most affected nations. Even in affluent and rapidly developing countries, efforts to mitigate air pollution face challenges. Canada, historically known for clean air, experienced heightened PM2.5 levels due to unprecedented wildfires, while China's progress in air quality improvement was hindered by economic resurgence following the COVID-19 pandemic. Delhi named world's most polluted capital The Indian capital city New Delhi once again gained the title of being the most polluted capital city in the world last year, according to an IQAir report. New Delhi's annual population-weighted PM2.5 concentration in 2023 stood at 92.7µg/m3 reportedly making it the world’s most polluted national capital. According to the report, the second most polluted capital was Dhaka (80.2 µg/m3), followed by a distinct third Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso with 46.6µg/m3. Experts concerned Glory Dolphin Hammes, North America chief executive of IQAir, expressed concerns over the regression in addressing air pollution, emphasising the urgent need for proactive measures. Worldwide, air pollution claims an estimated 7 million lives annually, disproportionately affecting developing nations reliant on polluting fuels for various purposes. The report underscores the necessity for nations to prioritise sustainable urban planning, adopt cleaner energy sources, and implement measures to mitigate the impact of wildfires. A week after reaching Canada, a man from the Indian state of Punjab allegedly stabbed his wife to death and was charged with murder. The accused later called his family and admitted that he had killed his wife, according to media reports.&nbsp;

<h2>What we know about the incident</h2>

The shocking incident took place on Friday (Mar 15) where the 50-year-old man identified as Jagpreet Singh from Punjab’s Ludhiana was arrested after his wife, Balwinder Kaur, 41, was found inside their residence in the Canadian city of Abbotsford with stab wounds.&nbsp;

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said that the Abbotsford Police Department (AbbyPD) were responding to an incident of assault on Friday around 10:50 pm (local time) and found Kaur “inside the residence suffering from life-threatening stab wounds.”

“First responders attempted life-saving measures, but sadly, the woman died in hospital shortly thereafter,” the statement added. Singh was arrested on the scene and charged with second-degree murder, on Saturday (Mar 16).&nbsp;

<h2>‘I have put her to sleep forever’</h2>

According to media reports, Singh video called his mother in Ludhiana and told her that he had killed his wife. Rajwinder Kaur, Balwinder’s sister, told the Indian Express that Jaspreet called his mother and told her “I have put her to sleep forever”.&nbsp;

Rajwinder also alleged that the 50-year-old had been obsessed with the thought of getting to Canada and had been harassing Balwinder to arrange his travel as soon as possible.&nbsp;

The couple reportedly had regular arguments about finances after Jagpreet stopped working and was unemployed.&nbsp;

Jagpreet Singh and Balwinder Kaur got married in 2000 and according to media reports had two children – a 22-year-old daughter and an 18-year-old son.&nbsp;

According to the victim’s sister, their daughter had gone to Canada on a study visa and was facing some health issues. In 2022, Balwinder went to Canada to look after her and Jagpreet began harassing her soon after she reached.&nbsp;

However, Jaspreet Singh, the brother of the accused has denied Rajwinder’s allegations saying that we are not sure what exactly happened that night but they were a “happy couple” and had returned from shopping just a few hours before the incident.&nbsp;

Muizzu, who came to power in September 2023, had implemented the phased evacuation and it was his election promise that the Indian troops would be removed from the island nation. &nbsp;
