A critically endangered species of reptile endemic to a sole island on the Ecuadorean archipelago is making a miraculous comeback. Scientists have maybe for the first time discovered hatchlings and "juvenile" populations of the Galapagos pink land iguana.

The species which was first discovered decades ago has been accorded the critically endangered species status as according to estimates published on the&nbsp;Galápagos Conservancy there are only 200 individuals left and all of them are confined to the slopes of Wolf Volcano on Isabela island.&nbsp;

Furthermore, they are made especially vulnerable by the fact that the volcano is active. Another threat to the population as per Reuters is alien species, particularly rodents that were introduced to the island.

As per Danny Rueda, Director of the Galapagos National Park, the discovery "marks a significant step forward, which allows us to identify a path going forward to save the pink iguana."

"Knowing all the aspects that make their existence vulnerable will allow us to take timely actions, mainly against invasive species and thus avoid interrupting the natural cycles of these fragile ecosystems," he added.

According to a 1903-06 mission to Santiago Island by the California Academy of Sciences, the land iguana from the Conolophus subcristatus species, one of three on the island, had vanished from there in the early 20th century. In order to revive Santiago, the natural environment of the Pacific archipelago, the Galapagos National Park (PNG) authorities had reintroduced more than 3,000 iguanas from a nearby island in 2019. Santiago is located in the middle of the archipelago. Charles Darwin, a British geologist and naturalist, made his evolutionary studies on the isolated island chain, which helped him earn fame. Darwin recognised a huge population of iguanas on Santiago in 1835, including all ages. “187 years later, we are once again seeing a robust population of land iguanas with adults, youngsters, and newborns. This enhances our hopes for restoration on the islands that have been severely impacted by introduced species and is a fantastic conservation accomplishment,” PNG director Danny Rueda said. Zoologist Stacey Cohen, a reptile expert at Palm Beach Zoo in Florida, explained the phenomenon to ABC affiliate WPBF.

"Their bodies basically start to shut down where they lose their functions and so they are up in the trees on the branches sleeping and then because it gets so cold, they lose that ability to hang on and then they do fall out of trees a lot," Cohen said.

"Cold is a very, very life-threatening thing for them because they are from parts of Central and South America close to the equator where it always stays very warm," she said.

Iguanas are not native to Florida, having shown up and taken over South Beach and beyond after gaining a toehold in the state in the 1960s. They’ve been&nbsp;spotted from Gainesville to the Florida Keys. But while they’ve clearly taken a liking to the Sunshine State, they haven’t quite adapted to the infrequent cold spells that can sometimes hit.

In recent years the authorities have urged Floridians to cull as many of the illegal immigrants as they can, with iguanas slipping over the Mexican border and in from the Caribbean in vast numbers.

Frost can't kill them, however, and some misguided locals have been known to cover fallen lizards in towels to warm them up or even take them home -- a big no-no for experts.

The customs department in India's southern Chennai airport apprehended a passenger for wildlife trafficking and seized a horned pit viper snake, rare tortoises, iguanas and other animals on Monday.

Authorities were alerted when a passenger passing through the 'Nothing to declare' lane was questioned and eventually searched. The airport's Commissioner of Customs, Rajan Chaudhary said it led to the discovery of the endangered amphibians and reptiles.

A horned pit viper snake, five Iguanas, four Blue-tongued skinks, three green tree frogs and 22 Egyptian tortoises were seized from his luggage. The Egyptian tortoise is recognized as "critically endangered" on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Animals.

The horned pit viper is a venomous snake found in Africa and easily identified by its horns, while the endangered Egyptian tortoises are native to Egypt and Libya.

The seized wildlife animals will be sent back to their country of origin - Thailand - while an investigation is underway. Thailand has long been a hub for illicit trafficking of wildlife and forest products.
