Having taken a 1-0 lead in the two-match ODI series, Australia were handed a stern challenge to chase 282 runs to win the second ODI. However, Australia lost wickets at consistent intervals with a patched-up team. Only three batters got into double figures for the Aussies with captain Steve Smith (29), Josh Inglis (22) and Travis Head (18) amongst runs.
No Aussie batter showed any resilience with the bat as Dunith Wellalage (35/4), Wanindu Hasaranga (23/3) and Asitha Fernando (23/3) helped Sri Lanka win the match and the series.
Batting first, Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis (101 off 115) led the charge along with Charith Asalanka (78) as they helped the hosts reach 281/4 in 50 overs. Nishan Madushka (51) and Janith Liyanage (32) also made healthy contributions for Sri Lanka.

Harshit Rana’s ODI debut has perhaps ended any hopes of ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah returning to the white-ball team for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, reckons cricketer-turned-broadcaster Aakash Chopra. Rana made his much-anticipated ODI debut against England in the recently-concluded Nagpur One-Dayer, which India won by four wickets, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Despite having an experienced Arshdeep Singh waiting in the wings for his ODI comeback, India opting for Rana indicates they are preparing Bumrah’s backup for the eight-team tournament starting February 19 in Pakistan.

The BCCI selectors named Bumrah just for the third and final ODI (on Feb 12), hoping for him to get some match practice in time for the first showpiece event of the year. Although the NCA doctors have yet to clear him of the back injury he sustained during the final Test Down Under (at the SCG), the selectors named him in the 15-man Champions Trophy squad.
However, with Team India’s final squad announcement for the three-match England series, which saw the inclusion of mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy, Bumrah’s name was nowhere to be seen, indicating the selectors have been informed of his unavailability for the remainder of the white-ball season before IPL 2025 begins.
Speaking on the same lines on his YouTube Channel, Chopra – a former domestic giant and a seasoned broadcaster expressed his concerns over India going ahead without Bumrah in the Champions Trophy.
"Harshit Rana's debut tells me there are minimal chances of Jasprit Bumrah being available for the Champions Trophy," Chopra said. "If Bumrah is not there and you have to take Harshit as he is ahead of [Mohammed] Siraj at the moment, playing him without a debut would make your heart beat fast."

Rana made his white-ball debut in the ongoing England series. While his T20I debut in Pune was marred by a 'concussion-sub' controversy, his maiden ODI game made headlines for all the right reasons. With less than a month left before the start of the Champions Trophy 2025, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) faced a new low on Tuesday (Jan 28) evening. ICC CEO Geoff Allardice stepped down from his role on Tuesday, marking the first significant blow for the administrators and their decision to award Pakistan the hosting rights. The CEO reportedly stepped down from his role taking responsibility for Pakistan’s lack of preparedness in the build-up to the tournament.

"It has been a privilege to serve as the Chief Executive Officer of the International Cricket Council and I am incredibly proud of the results we have achieved, from enhancing the global reach of cricket to the commercial foundation put in place for ICC Members," Allardice said in a statement.
"I believe this is the right time for me to step down and pursue new challenges," he added.
While no accurate reason was given in his farewell statement, Allardice faced huge criticism for awarding hosting rights to Pakistan. Videos surfacing on social media have indicated that stadiums are not yet prepared and lack basic facilities.
It is not the first time Allardice has faced backlash as ICC had to allot extra funds during the ICC T20 World Cup in the United States. This also caused a huge backlash within the ICC, highlighting Allardice’s lack of proper administration.

Champions Trophy 2025: Pakistan stadiums in mess, lack of preparedness costs ICC CEO Allardice his job

The commotion regarding the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 refuses to die down. With the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) clearly stating that they won't send Team India to Pakistan, the hosts for next year's mega event, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was offered to accept a hybrid model.

PCB has shown willingness to accept the proposal. In a recent ICC meeting, they have urged the governing body to follow the same model when the upcoming ICC events will be held in India. India is set to host the 2025 Women's ODI World Cup, and 2026 T20 World Cup (along with Sri Lanka).

As per a report in ESPNcricinfo, it is understood that the PCB has put forward the proposal over the weekend in meetings with the ICC and BCCI in Dubai.

They have urged for an equitable and long-term agreement -- going beyond the Champions Trophy -- with similar provisions for Pakistan to play outside of India during ICC events held there. However, it is unclear whether such provisions are aimed for the next three years or until the end of the current rights cycle, in 2031.

As of now, there has been no response from the BCCI but indications are that the Indian cricket board is not willing to accept adopting a hybrid model for their tournaments, citing no security issues in India.

In either case, the ICC Board will examine the PCB proposal before making a final call for next year's Champions Trophy (also regarded as the mini World Cup). After the final decision is out, both PCB and BCCI will have it ratified by their governments. The next ICC meeting on this matter is tentatively scheduled for Thursday (Dec 5), with a final decision set to be out soon.

Earlier, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi had told reporters on Sunday (Dec 1) in Dubai, "We will do whatever's best for cricket. If we adopt any other formula [except hosting the tournament in Pakistan], it will be done on the basis of equality. The most important thing for Pakistan is its respect; everything else is secondary."

"A one-sided arrangement is no longer acceptable. It cannot be the case that we continue to go to India, but they do not visit Pakistan. Whatever happens must be on the basis of equality," he added.

Champions Trophy 2025: PCB open to hybrid model, urges same for events in India

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is set to host a virtual meeting about the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025 (CT 2025) hosting row. A potential voting on the issue is likely during the meeting, on Nov 29 (Friday), as the mega event is only a few months away (scheduled to be held in Pakistan early next year). Ahead of the meeting, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi has insisted that the board remains 'clear' in its view that any decision on hosting the marquee tournament should be made based on 'equality'. Further, he backed Jay Shah -- who is set to step down as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief and take over as ICC chairman early next month -- would take a fair call with India adamant to not travel to Pakistan for CT 2025.

"Our stance is very clear," Naqvi said while addressing a press conference held at the Gaddafi Stadium on Thursday morning (Nov 28), "I promise we'll do what is best for Pakistan cricket. I'm constantly in touch with the ICC chairman and my team is talking to them constantly. We're still clear in our stance that it's not acceptable that we play cricket in India, and they don't play cricket here. Whatever will happen, will happen based on equality. We've told the ICC very clearly, and what happens next we'll let you know."

Notably, CT 2025 is set to be held across three venues in Pakistan. However, India have not travelled to their neighbouring country since 2008, due to political tension, and their government has once again denied them permission (also happened during the 2023 Asia Cup). Thus, the final schedule of the tournament hasn't been out. As ICC is eager to put an end to all this commotion, Naqvi stated that PCB will not accept a 'hybrid model' and do 'what is best for Pakistan cricket'.

Naqvi had earlier said, "Our stance is clear: they (BCCI) need to give us in writing any objections they may have. Until now, no discussion of the hybrid model has happened, nor are we prepared to accept one."

In his recent claim, Naqvi added, "Whatever we do, we will make sure the best outcome for Pakistan is achieved. But I repeat, and I am sure you know what I mean, it's not possible that Pakistan play in India, and they don't come here." Pakistan travelled to India for the 2023 ODI World Cup. India is set to host many ICC events, such as the 2025 Women's ODI World Cup and also co-host the 2026 T20I World Cup (alongside Sri Lanka). Thus, if India do not visit Pakistan, Naqvi's statement indicates that PCB might also come up with similar issues going ahead.

Lastly, Naqvi backed Shah, who is set to take over as ICC chief on Sunday (Dec 1), to take a fair call on this issue. "[Jay Shah] takes charge in December, and I'm sure once he moves from the BCCI to the ICC, he will think about the ICC's benefit, and that's what he should do. Whenever anyone assumes such a role, he should only consider the interests of that organisation."

Naqvi concluded by saying, "I promise you that we'll not just sell our rights out just for more money. This will never happen. But we'll do whatever is best for Pakistan."
