"The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Tapan Kumar Deka, IPS, Special Director, Intelligence Bureau, as Director Intelligence Bureau vice Arvinda Kumar IPS, upon completion of his tenure on 30.06.2022 for a tenure of two years from the date of assumption of the charge of the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier," said a notification from Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.

RAW chief Goel, a 1984 batch IPS officer of the Punjab cadre, got second extension for one year.

"The appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the extension in service of Samant Kumar Goel, IPS (PB:84) as Secretary, Research &amp; Analysis Wing for a period of one year beyond his present tenure i.e. up to 30.06.2023," said the notification.

The Border Security Force (BSF) on Thursday foiled a major bid by terrorists to smuggle in weapons from Pakistan along the International Border (IB) and seized a big cache of arms and ammunition in Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district, officials said.

"The BSF, Jammu today foiled a weapon smuggling attempt from across the International Border in Samba area and seized a big cache of arms and ammunition," BSF DIG S P S Sandhu said.

He further said the seizure by BSF troops included four pistols, eight pistol magazines and 232 rounds of ammunition.

There have been several incidents of weapons and narcotic smuggling attempts done by cross-border terrorists to drop weapons on this side of the border through drones over the past six months.

It may be recalled that an arms consignment including one AK assault rifle, three magazines and 30 rounds believed to have been dropped by a drone from Pakistan had been recovered last Saturday by police near the International Border from Sounjana village of Phalain Mandal, about six km from the IB.

On September 27, BSF recovered four pistols, eight magazines, 100 rounds of ammunition, a packet of narcotics weighing about one kg along with fake Indian currency worth Rs 2,75,000, from the International Border in Akhnoor sector of Jammu district, officials said.

The bill was passed in Lok Sabha on July 1. This bill, if passed by Upper House of Parliament, will provide up to 10 per cent quota for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in educational institutions and public employment alongside existing reservations in the state.

To put that in perspective, in 2017, India reported 771 ceasefire violations along the Line of Control, the International Border, and the Actual Ground Position Line in Jammu and Kashmir.&nbsp

And only 228 in 2016.&nbsp

But that of course was the year of the "surgical strikes", when Indian soldiers crossed the border and hit what the army referred to as a "terror launchpad".&nbsp

Ever since then, there has been a massive surge in ceasefire violations along the border.&nbsp

The ceasefire between India and Pakistan was signed in 2003. The nitty gritty of the agreement was worked out by the DGMOs (Director General of Military Operations) of the two armies.&nbsp

Some of the reasons stated for the accord at the time sound rather prosaic now — it would for example allow the two armies to move stores. (There was of course also the fact that it would allow them to evacuate their wounded.)&nbsp

But the accord itself was pretty significant considering the two countries had come close to war in 2001 after the terror attack on the Indian Parliament, which the country alleged was launched from Pakistan.&nbsp

The ceasefire held for 10 years.&nbsp

Then in January 2013 India alleged that a Pakistani Border Action Team crossed over, ambushed an Indian Army patrol, and killed two soldiers.&nbsp

One of the two soldiers was beheaded.&nbsp

Pakistan denied the claim but the allegation caused massive outrage in India.&nbsp

Salman Khurshid, the then minister for External Affairs, vowed a “proportionate” response.&nbsp

The never-ending cycle of tit-for-tat that ensued has never stopped.&nbsp

And by now of course, with a ceasefire violation reported virtually every day along the border, it is fair to say that the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan exists only on paper. For all practical purposes, the agreement is as good as dead.&nbsp

A high alert was sounded in the Jammu region after movement of suspected militants was detected along the International Border (I-B) in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district, a senior police officer said today.

The development comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the state on May 19.

"We have sounded a high alert in the area since 12 am after the detection of suspected movement of a group of people near the I-B in Kathua district," the officer said.&nbsp

Security installations along highways in Kathua, Samba, Jammu districts and security establishments have been put on alert, he said.&nbsp

Movement of suspected militants was detected in Kathua district's Tarnah Allah area, which is close to the I-B, the officer said.&nbsp

Three to four suspected militants are believed to be part of the group that has infiltrated from Pakistan into this side in Tarnah Allah in the Londi-Bobbiyan area, according to reports.

Police and security forces have set up check posts and launched search operations in the area.&nbsp

Movement of suspected militants was detected in Kathua district's Tarnah Allah area, which is close to the I-B, the officer said.

The other intruders managed to escape, he said.

The force also destroyed two Pakistani posts in retaliation to the killing of its jawan in unprovoked firing.

Two Pakistani mortar positions were &quot;located, targeted and destroyed by BSF troopers yesterday night only. The coordinated precision fire of BSF troopers silenced Pakistani guns,&quot; a BSF spokesman said.

Yesterday, a BSF jawan was killed in unprovoked firing by Pakistan, the first this year, in Samba sector of Jammu and the force had since then launched retaliatory fire.

He added that the firing from across the border had led to the deaths of 30 people -- 14 Army personnel, 12 civilians, and four BSF personnel.

He added that there had been no cross-border firing in any other state bordering Pakistan.&nbsp;

The truce between India and Pakistan along the International Border, the Line of Control and the Actual Ground Position Line in Jammu and Kashmir came into force in November 2003.

India shares a 3,323-km-long border with Pakistan, of which 221 km of the IB and 740 km of the LoC fall in Jammu and Kashmir.

In 2016, there had been 449 ceasefire violations in which 13 civilians and 13 security personnel were killed and 83 civilians and 99 security personnel injured.&nbsp;

The truce between India and Pakistan along the International Border, the Line of Control and the Actual Ground Position Line in Jammu and Kashmir came into force in November 2003. India shares a 3,323-km-long border with Pakistan, of which 221 km of the IB and 740 km of the LoC fall in Jammu and Kashmir. In 2016, there had been 449 ceasefire violations in which 13 civilians and 13 security personnel were killed and 83 civilians and 99 security personnel injured. (With inputs from PTI)
