Israel said Thursday it struck ports and energy infrastructure used by Houthi rebels in Yemen after intercepting a missile fired from the country, warning Huthi leaders it "will reach you too."

Houthi media said the strikes hit power stations, oil facilities and a port in Hodaidah, killing nine people and injuring others. The strikes came after the interception of a missile fired by Huthi rebels towards Israel. The group has regularly targeted Israel over its military operation in Gaza.

Israel's military said it "conducted precise strikes on Huthi military targets in Yemen -- including ports and energy infrastructure in Sanaa, which the Huthis have been using in ways that effectively contributed to their military actions."

"I warn the leaders of the Huthi terrorist organisation: Israel's long arm will reach you too," Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said. Al-Masira, a media channel belonging to the Huthis, said a series of "aggressive raids" were launched in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa and the port city of Hodeidah.

It reported raids that "targeted two central power plants" in and around Yemen's capital Sanaa, while in Hodeidah it said "the enemy launched four aggressive raids targeting the port... and two raids targeting" an oil facility.

Houthis' Powerful Missiles: A Growing Threat in the Region

The Houthis' increasingly powerful arsenal poses a significant threat in the Middle East. With advanced weaponry and escalating tensions, their military capabilities are raising alarms among regional powers and international observers.

Two American Navy warships were attacked by Yemen-based Houthi rebels in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a vital shipping route connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. The United States Navy confirmed that at least eight drones, five anti-ship ballistic missiles, and three anti-ship cruise missiles were launched at the USS Stockdale and the USS Spruance on Monday (Nov 11).

The vessels shot down the projectiles and were "not damaged and no personnel were hurt," Pentagon press secretary Air Force Major Gen Pat Ryder told reporters on Tuesday (Nov 12).

The attack follows ongoing tensions in the region. The Bab el-Mandeb Strait is a critical maritime corridor, with goods worth about $1 trillion passing through each year. The Houthis have been launching similar attacks on commercial and military ships in this area, partly in response to broader regional conflicts, including the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza and Israel’s actions in Lebanon.

Impact on shipping

Attacks by the Iran-backed militant group have disrupted global shipping, with some estimates suggesting that the attacks have reduced traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait by half. The US has formed an international coalition to protect commercial vessels in the region. However, the Houthis have made it clear that they will keep up their attacks as long as the regional conflicts persist.

In addition to military actions, a United Nations panel of experts has raised concerns that the Houthis may be extorting shipping companies. It is claimed that the rebels are demanding as much as $180 million a month for safe passage through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Houthi rebels attack US warships with drones and missiles near Red Sea

United States conducted airstrikes in Yemen reportedly hitting three cities controlled by Yemen-based Houthi rebels, including the capital, Sanaa, and the port city of Hodeida, according to the Houthi-affiliated Al Masirah TV.

Al Masirah mentioned that multiple airstrikes took place in both Sanaa and Hodeida. There were also strikes in Dhamar, located south of Sanaa. However, the report did not confirm whether there were any casualties or damage caused by the attacks.

Houthi official Hashem Sharaf al-Din told Al Masirah that the strikes on the capital and other Yemeni regions after the solidarity marches supporting Lebanon and Gaza were nothing more than a futile attempt to frighten the Yemeni people. "Yemen will not be deterred by these attacks and will continue its steadfastness in confronting the enemies with all its strength," he said.
