Israeli media reported a large drone attack by Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah into northern Israel on Tuesday (Aug 6). Several drones were reportedly launched, with one being intercepted and another falling in the city of Nahariya. Local media reports said at least 19 people were injured in the attack.

Initial investigations by the Israeli military suggested that the injuries were caused by an interceptor that “missed the target and hit the ground, injuring several civilians”. It said that the incident was still under review.

Reuters reported that one drone attack targeted a bus stop on a main road outside the city.

Hezbollah later confirmed it launched a “swarm” of combat drones towards the Israeli Army’s Golani Brigade headquarters in northern Israel and the Egoz Unit 621 at Shraga army base north of Acre.

The attack came as tensions between the two sides have been boiling following the July 30 attack by Israel in the city of Beirut that left senior Hezbollah military commander Fuad Shukr dead.

Officials in the United States-led coalition, preparing to counter a potential Iranian attack, have cautioned Israel against a strong response, according to a report on Tuesday (Aug 6).

In April, a significant drone and missile attack from Iran was thwarted by a coalition that reportedly included Israel, the United States, Britain, France, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain.

Countries issue travel warnings after Hamas and Hezbollah leaders' deaths

Iran-backed and Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah on Sunday (Aug 4) fired over 50 projectiles inside Israel amid the raging war in Gaza that has kept West Asia on edge for months. The latest barrage from Hezbollah activated Israel's Iron Dome air defence system and according to initial reports most of the projectiles launched by Hezbollah overnight were destroyed in the air.

Hezbollah said its attack on Beit Hillel in northern Israel, about 230 km north of Jerusalem, was in retaliation for Israeli strikes on Kfar Kela and Deir Siriane in Lebanon, which it claimed injured civilians.

Hezbollah's latest spree of offence towards Israel comes after two targeted assassinations that Israelis have allegedly done in recent days, notably that of Fuad Shukr in Beirut and Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

Interestingly, Israel has neither confirmed nor denied its involvement in the assassinations of Shukr and Haniyeh. The Israeli outlook follows a pattern of ambiguity that the country has kept since launching the retaliatory state of war on Gaza after October 7 last year.

Several countries around the world, including the United States (US), the United Kingdom (UK), Sweden, and Jordan, advised their citizens to leave Lebanon amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran-backed Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

On Saturday (Aug 3), the embassies of the US and the UK in Lebanon urged their citizens to leave the Middle Eastern country immediately.

Sweden said that due to the escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, its foreign ministry decided to temporarily close its embassy in Beirut and withdraw diplomatic personnel.

Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom urged all citizens in Lebanon to "leave the country by whichever means possible, while they still can."

Meanwhile, Jordan issued a notice urging citizens not to travel to Lebanon temporarily and requesting Jordanian citizens in Lebanon to evacuate promptly. Fears of an escalation of hostilities that could engulf Lebanon are at their highest since Hezbollah started attacking Israel, a day after the Gaza war began on October 7 last year.

Israel's premier intelligence agency, Mossad, hired Iranian security agents to plant the bomb in three rooms of the guesthouse where Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was staying, a report in the Telegraph has claimed.

“They are now certain that Mossad hired agents from the Ansar al-Mahdi protection unit. Upon further investigation, they discovered additional explosive devices in two other rooms,” an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp (IRGC) official was quoted as saying by the publication.

The report added that the original plan to assassinate Haniyeh was in May when he attended the funeral of Ebrahim Raisi, Iran's former president.

However, the plan could not be executed due to the large crowds gathered in the building which increased the possibility of failure.

Later, two agents placed the explosive devices in the IRGC guesthouse in north Tehran where Haniyeh was staying. CCTV footage showed the agents entering and exiting multiple rooms within minutes, according to officials.

The agents then snuck out of Iran but still had a source in Tehran. After confirmation that Haniyeh was in one of the rooms, the explosive was detonated from abroad.

The incident has led to fissures within the IRGC, with different sectors accusing each other of the failure,
