India’s passport has dropped to 78th place in the Henley Passport Index 2026, a three-rank decline from February. Despite the fall, Indian passport holders can still travel to 56 countries through visa-free, visa-on-arrival and ETA access routes.

On 17 November 2025, India’s Ministry of External Affairs revealed that some Indians were lured into travelling to Iran under the visa waiver scheme with false promises of jobs or onward journeys. Several of these travellers were later abducted and held for ransom after arrival.
