Heinrich Klaasen slammed 174 off 83 balls to lead South Africa to a 164-run win in the fourth one-day international against Australia at SuperSport Park on Friday.

Klaasen shared an extraordinary fifth wicket partnership of 222 off only 94 balls with David Miller (82 not out) as South Africa piled up 416 for five, their fifth-highest total in one-day internationals, before bowling out Australia for 252.

"To be honest I can't remember the last part of the innings. I’ll have to go back and watch it tonight," said Klaasen, who smashed 13 fours and 13 sixes before being caught on the boundary off the last ball of the innings.

"Some days guys have a day out," said Australian captain Mitchell Marsh, who for the second game in a row, was on the losing side after sending in the opposition.

"Klaasen was amazing. We got outplayed. Sometimes in international cricket, you have to take your hat off."

Alex Carey hit 99 off 77 balls for Australia and was the last man out. Lungi Ngidi took four for 51 and Kagiso Rabada three for 41 for South Africa.

Series levelled

South Africa's win tied the series at two matches apiece, setting up a decider in Johannesburg on Sunday.

With the World Cup only three weeks away, Australia had a potentially serious injury concern when in-form opening batsman Travis Head had to retire hurt after being struck on the left hand by fast bowler Gerald Coetzee. Australian team management announced that Head was due to go for a scan on Friday night with results not expected until Saturday.

A run spree of such magnitude did not seem likely as accurate Australian bowling and a slower-than-usual Centurion pitch saw South Africa make relatively slow progress on a ground known for high scoring. At the second drinks break, the total was 157 for three off 32 overs.

The acceleration started during a stand of 74 off 57 balls between Rassie van der Dussen (62) and Klaasen.

It went into over-drive when the left-handed Miller joined Klaasen and hit the second ball he faced, from leg-spinner Adam Zampa, for six.

Zampa was hammered for 113 runs off his 10 overs, equalling the dubious record for most runs conceded in a one-day international set by fellow Australian Mick Lewis, also against South Africa, in Johannesburg in 2006.

Marcus Stoinis conceded 81 runs and Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Ellis went for 79 apiece. Michael Neser, playing his first match of the series, was the least expensive Australian bowler, taking one for 59.

South Africa level ODI series after Heinrich Klassen's blitzkrieg

Heinrich Klaasen broke several records as he registered his career-best 174 off 83 balls against Australia in the fourth ODI in Centurion. Klaasen, the man in a purple patch, made the first innings his own as he, alongside David Miller (82* off 45 balls), stitched the fastest double-century-stand in ODIs, adding 222 runs off just 92 balls for the fifth wicket.

Klaasen's onslaught brought back the 2006 Johannesburg game memories wherein South Africa chased a world record total of 434 runs and created history. Though the Proteas fell shy of coming close to that total, Klaasen's numbers did make their way into record books.

Slamming 174 at the SuperSport Park, including 13 sixes and as many fours, the right-handed batter registered the fourth-highest ODI score by a South African batter and the second-highest by a no. 5 or lower behind Kapil Dev's 175. His 57-ball hundred is also the fifth quickest by a South African in this format.

Klaasen's 174 is also the highest ODI score by a batter entering the 25th over or later in an ODI game. Besides, South Africa's 416 for five is their third-highest team total in One-Dayers.

Adam Zampa, Australia's premier spinner in white-ball cricket, also broke a record for conceding the most runs by a bowler in an ODI - 113 in ten overs. Ironically, he equalled Mick Lewis' record - another Australian medium pacer, who was taken to cleaners by South Africans during the famous 2006 ODI.

South Africa fight for the series

After getting whitewashed in the three-match T20Is earlier, South Africa lost the first two ODIs against Australia. The hosts made a comeback into the series with a win in the third ODI, making it 2-1 in Australia's favour.

With South Africa now hitting 416 for five in the fourth match in Centurion, chances of them going for the win and levelling the series rise.

The win in this match will make the fifth and final ODI in Johannesburg the decider.

Meanwhile, following the Australian series, South Africa will fly to India for the 50-over World Cup, where they will open their campaign against Sri Lanka on October 7.

4th ODI: Records tumble in Centurion as Heinrich Klaasen's masterclass guides South Africa to 416 vs Australia

Rishabh Pant-led India came to the second T20I, of the five-match series, versus South Africa with an aim to level the scoreline after a loss in the first encounter. However, the script remained the same for the home side as they conceded the game by four wickets at the Barabati Stadium, Cuttack on Sunday evening (June 12).

Being asked to bat first, India rode on Ishan Kishan's 34, Shreyas Iyer's 40 and Dinesh Karthik's unbeaten 30 to post a moderate 148-6 in 20 overs on a difficult batting track. In reply, Temba Bavuma-led SA reached the target in 18.2 overs courtesy of Heinrich Klaasen's rapid 81. With the series now on the line, as Proteas are one win away from taking an unassailable lead, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Sunil Gavaskar has urged the Rahul Dravid-led thinktank to include Jammu & Kashmir pacer Umran Malik in the playing XI for the decisive third T20I.

"The first player I got excited to see was Sachin Tendulkar. The second player is Umran Malik." Gavaskar said after the match. "He should play," Gavaskar added.

Talking about the 22-year-old Umran, he impressed one and all in his first full IPL season which was held recently. Playing for the one-time winners Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Umran churned out as many as 22 wickets and was also able to clock over 150kph at regular intervals. Thus, Gavaskar feels his extra pace will come in handy for Pant & Co., who have struggled for wickets in the middle overs. For the unversed, Umran was used extensively in the middle overs by SRH and he was quite successful in that phase of the game for the franchise in IPL 2022. Thus, he can be a valuable addition.

The third T20I will be held in Visakhapatnam on Tuesday evening (June 13).
