As per a recent study, published in the PLOS Genetics open access publication, tall people are at a higher risk of acquiring a variety of health problems such as nerve disorders and neurological diseases.

As per the research, a person’s height, whether tall or short is known to raise their risk for a range of diseases. The study also found new connections between taller heights and a higher risk of peripheral neuropathy, caused by damage to nerves in the extremities as well as bone and skin infections such as foot ulcers or leg ulcers.

Height has previously been linked to a variety of diseases, from heart diseases to cancer, but scientists have been unable to tell whether an individual's being tall or short puts them in danger or whether factors that impact height, such as socioeconomic condition and proper nutrition, are to be blamed.

The researchers for this study used genetic and health data from over 250,000 people to analyse over 1,000 disorders and features, making it the biggest study conducted on height and disease.

Being tall is connected to a higher risk of atrial fibrillation and varicose veins, as well as a lower risk of coronary heart disease, high cholesterol, and blood pressure, according to Sridharan Raghavan of the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Centre.

The experts further said that height could be a previously unknown risk factor for adult diseases in a variety of ways. The researchers, however, added that additional research is needed to fully understand some of these connections and that, in future studies, they might benefit from having a bigger and more diverse international sample.

Tall people face more health risks than short people, claims study

Adults' average heights in India are decreasing, while global average heights are increasing.

According to a new study titled "Trends in adult height in India from 1998 to 2015: Evidence from the National Family and Health Survey," the situation is concerning.

"In the context of an overall increase in average heights worldwide, the decline in average height of adults in India is alarming and demands an urgent enquiry. The argument for different standards of height for the Indian population as different genetic groups needs further scrutiny, " the authors of the study said.

The findings from India, on the other hand, highlight the need to investigate non-genetic factors as well as the interaction of genetic, nutritional, and other social and environmental determinants on height, they noted.

The authors used quantitative secondary data analysis to investigate the variation in height among adults in India in order to track trends in height.

The National Nutritional Monitoring Bureau (NNMB) and the National Family Health Survey both gather data on height on a wide basis (NFHS). &nbsp;

The authors of this study looked into various height trends among people in India, and the findings revealed that the average height of women and men in the 15-25 year age range has dropped significantly in recent years.

While women's average height has declined by roughly 0.42 cm, men's average height has decreased by 1.10 cm in the above age group.

Religious groups, caste or tribe, domicile, and wealth index all showed a decrease in average height.&nbsp;

The authors also discussed the elements that are impacting the fall in India's average adult height.

While hereditary factors are thought to account for 60–80 percent of final height, environmental and social factors play a significant role in realising that potential.

Decrease in average height of adults in India alarming: Study

A global study by the&nbsp;Imperial College, London, United Kingdom has found a direct relationship between the poor diet of children and the decreasing average height and increasing weight of the&nbsp;school-aged children.

In the study, recently published in the Lancet, revealed that the height and weight of the school-aged children vary across the globe. As per the observations, the poor diets of children may bring a gap of nearly&nbsp;20cm (7.9inches) between the tallest and the shortest countries.

The researchers used data of nearly&nbsp;65 million children aged five to 19 years old in a total of 193 countries. After studying the data, the researchers found a 20cm gap between the tallest and the shortest countries, which&nbsp;represented an eight-year growth gap for girls and a six-year growth gap for boys. In one of the instances, the average height of a 19-year-old Bangladeshi girl was similar to the height of an 11-year-old boy from the Netherlands.

It also reported that on the basis of data collected between&nbsp;1985 to 2019, the tallest 19-year-olds in 2019 belonged to the&nbsp;northwest and central Europe, including the Netherlands, Montenegro, Denmark and Iceland. On the other hand, south and southeast&nbsp;Asia, Latin America and East Africa, including Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, Guatemala and Bangladesh were the shortest 19-year-olds in 2019. Meanwhile, countries such as China, South Korea and a few in Southeast Asia saw improvements in the average height during the&nbsp;35-year period.

Through this study, the researchers have been able to reflect on the role, importance and current input of nutrition, vitamins and minerals in a child's meal.&nbsp;

The study also looked at children's&nbsp;&nbsp;Body Mass Index (BMI), which is a measure of height and weight ratio and gives an indication of whether or not a person has a healthy body weight with respect to their height. As per the data collected, the largest BMI of a 19-year-old was found in&nbsp;Pacific islands, Middle East, USA and New Zealand, and the lowest were found in the&nbsp;south Asian countries such as India and Bangladesh.&nbsp;

One of the most important observations made by this study is that children in the majority of the countries were healthy, as per the stands set by the World Health Organisation (WHO), by the age of five. However, the rate at which the height increased kept massively decreasing over the course of years.

"Children in some countries grow healthily to five years, but fall behind in school years. This shows that there is an imbalance between investment in improving nutrition in pre-schoolers, and in school-aged children and adolescents. This issue is especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic when schools are closed throughout the world, and many poor families are unable to provide adequate nutrition for their children," explained&nbsp;Professor Majid Ezzati, senior author of the study from Imperial's School of Public Health.

The researchers, through this study, hope that the countries will be motivated to decrease the price of the nutritious food, for the sake of the future of their country. "Our findings should motivate policies that increase the availability and reduce the cost of nutritious foods, as this will help children grow taller without gaining excessive weight for their height. These initiatives include food vouchers towards nutritious foods for low-income families, and free healthy school meal programmes which are particularly under threat during the pandemic. These actions would enable children to grow taller without gaining excessive weight, with lifelong benefits for their health and wellbeing," said&nbsp;Dr Andrea Rodriguez Martinez, the lead author of the study from Imperial's School of Public Health.

Nepal on Wednesday deployed a team to find out the height of the world`s highest peak, Mount Everest.

This comes after speculations regarding shrinking of Mount Everest`s height started floating after Nepal was hit by a devastating earthquake measuring 7.9 Richter scale in April 2015.

A group of four officials from the Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation set off for the peak after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli bid them farewell, the Prime Minister`s Secretariat said in a statement.

"It will be the first time that Nepal is measuring the height of Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest). You all please bring the measurement on centimetres also. The measurement conducted by you will be the only official height of the Mount Everest," the Secretariat quoted Prime Minister Oli as saying.

The team comprises of Chief Survey Officer Khim Lal Gautam and Survey Officer Rabin Karki, Suraj Singh Bhandari and Amin Yubraj Dhital.

Amongst them, Chief Survey Officer Gautama and Survey Officer Bhandari will make it to the top of the Everest whereas the two other officials will remain at the base camp assisting the surveyors and monitor activities at an altitude of 5,364 meters.

The team is expected to return to Kathmandu within a month while the report is expected to be announced by end of this year.

The survey will be conducted according to different categories, including Precise Levelling, Trigonometric Levelling, Gravity Survey and GNSS survey which covers 285 points with 12 different observation stations.

The first kind of survey would help in finding the height from the Southern Plains of Nepal to the selected control points; the second is performed from selected control points, the point of precise levelling.

The Gravity Survey will define the local surface that corresponds to sea level and its imagined extension under (or over) land areas and the fourth survey determines the location of gravity points benchmarks as well as the top of Everest.

The centuries-old belief regarding the height of Mount Everest measuring 8,842 meters will be verified at earliest of 2020.&nbsp;
