The year 2024 was the warmest on record in India since 1901, with the average minimum temperature settling 0.90 degrees Celsius above the long-period average, the IMD said on Wednesday.
The annual mean temperature in 2024 was 25.75 degrees Celsius, 0.65 degrees above the long-period average.
The average maximum temperature stood at 31.25 degrees Celsius, 0.20 degrees above normal. The average minimum temperature was 20.24 degrees Celsius, 0.90 degrees above normal, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.
The year 2024 surpassed 2016, which recorded a mean land surface air temperature of 0.54 degrees Celsius above normal, making it the warmest year since 1901.

According to a yearly review by two independent groups of climate scientists -- World Weather Attribution and Climate Central --, the world experienced 41 additional days of dangerous heat in 2024.
Mohapatra said the rise in minimum temperatures in 2024 was "quite high".
"Long-term data shows most parts of the country are witnessing a rising trend in minimum temperatures, particularly in post-monsoon and winter seasons," he said.
The IMD said La Nina conditions, characterised by cooler ocean surface temperatures in the central Pacific Ocean and usually associated with colder winters in north India, were expected to develop in January but would be short-lived.

Hundreds of deaths have been reported across Asia due to heatwaves, with people most impacted in countries including India, Bangladesh, Thailand, Philippines, Cambodia, and Myanmar after experiencing temperatures well above 40 degrees Celsius for several days due to climate change and El Niño effect. A report released by HeatWatch claims that India recorded over 700 deaths and over 40,000 heatstroke cases attributed to climate change. According to reports, over 1,300 people lost their lives during the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia in June after temperatures soared to 52 degrees Celsius. Similar trends were seen in Western African countries like Nigeria and Ghana which witnessed an increase in patients with heat-related illnesses after temperatures recorded over 40 degrees Celsius in February. Australia also experienced an intense heatwave that affected several areas of the country with temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius. Southern and Southeastern nations of Europe recorded over 19 deaths due to a heatwave after several regions recorded scorching high temperatures, especially in Greece and Italy, where most fatalities were recorded. Southern and Western regions of the United States were severely hit by heatwaves, recording over 1,000 deaths, with the hottest temperature recorded at 54 degrees Celsius at Furnace Creek, Death Valley. Mexico recorded over 150 deaths that could be linked to heat-related illnesses. 2024: A wake-up call The number of lives lost due to just weather events directly is alarming. Many other innocent lives are lost due to climate change indirectly when it takes the form of deadly illnesses such as heart diseases, respiratory diseases due to air pollution, stroke, cancer and many other leading causes that can be linked to climate change. The year 2024 should be a wake-up call for governments, policymakers, and us as individuals. Climate change is a pressing issue and we need to look for solutions that can only be addressed by global cooperation and commitment. Global bodies and governments should implement strict environmental measures like transitioning to renewable energy sources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels. Although this requires significant investments, we cannot ignore the immediate need to adapt to sustainable solutions and technologies to reduce our carbon footprint. Every year, the metropolitan city of about 3.7 million people&nbsp;witnesses temperatures as high as 40 degrees Celsius with high humidity during the summer season from June to October. This prevents the locals from having outdoor activities during the day.

While the neighbouring region is gripped by the Israel-Hamas conflict, the Dubai locals enjoy nighttime beaches, especially on weekends.

"The temperature drops down in the evening after the sun sets. So, yeah, it's amazing," said Mohammed, 32, from Pakistan, who brought his children to enjoy the night sea without worrying about the burning sun.

"While you're... bathing inside the water, you can see the sand even on your foot and your hands and everything," said Mohammed, who has lived in Dubai for a decade.&nbsp;

The city has over 800 metres of designated beaches that are illuminated with large, bright floodlights, AFP reported. Shark nets have also been installed. The lifeguards, who are positioned 24 hours a day, also use night vision binoculars to keep a watch on the swimmers or kayakers. The authorities are also testing a camera system powered by artificial intelligence that would detect if someone is in distress.

While the locals visit the beach at night to enjoy and relax after work, authorities are using this as an opportunity to promote tourism in the city during summer.

"I believe we are one of the only cities in the world to have such infrastructure on public beaches at night," said Hamad Shaker, an official from the Dubai municipality.

Scientists cautioned on Thursday that heatwaves are expected to become more frequent with longer duration. The demand for air conditioners would rise, just as widespread illnesses would increase.&nbsp;

"At 3 degrees C of warming, many cities could face month-long heatwaves, skyrocketing energy demand for air conditioning, as well as a shifting risk for insect-borne diseases — sometimes simultaneously," the authors wrote.

In 2005, global warming was limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius after 200 nations agreed in Paris to prevent the catastrophic consequences of climate change. According to the latest UN assessments, the cap today would be at 2.9 degrees Celsius to combat climate change.

"The difference between 1.5 degrees C and 3 degrees C has life-or-death consequences for billions of people worldwide," said Rogier van den Berg of WRI, an America-based think tank.

<h2>Low-income nations to be more exposed</h2>

The report highlights that fast-growing cities in low-income nations would face the worst consequences of rising temperatures. Poorest cities remain more exposed as they lack the means to adapt to rising temperatures.

"People living in low-income cities will be the hardest hit," says the report.

It is predicted that two-thirds of the world's population will reside in cities by 2050. Out of which 90 per cent growth will be seen in African and Asian countries.

WRI estimated that the longest heatwaves in large cities could prolong to 16.3 days on average every year if the global temperatures rise by 1.5 degrees Celsius. However, they could go on to 24.5 days in a scenario where the average increase is 3 degrees Celsius.&nbsp;

The frequency of heatwaves is also likely to increase from 4.9 to 6.4 on average in a year, which would lead to a massive surge in the demand for air conditioning and energy.

Hotter cities will also provide ideal conditions for mosquitoes, which carry life-threatening arboviruses. The researchers predict that the risk of arbovirus will remain in major cities of Brazil for at least six months at 3 degrees Celsius increased temperatures.

While the number of peak malaria days would likely reduce across the world, the temperate zones in Europe and North America could experience a rise.

Sub-Saharan African capital cities like Dakar, Freetown, and others "could suffer heatwaves of more than a month" seven times a year on average.

"This data should serve as a wakeup call... now is the time to start preparing cities for a much hotter world while doing everything we can to slash emissions," said van den Berg.

Delhi is observing&nbsp;humid and hot weather conditions despite receiving over 200 mm of rain in July, causing inconvenience to residents. The national capital region has been experiencing&nbsp;high moisture and low wind speeds with inadequate weather systems. While the city witnessed waterlogged streets in the last week due to heavy rain, the irregular rainfall has resulted in high humidity.

According to experts, the patchy light to moderate rains in Delhi-NCR was due to the monsoon trough remaining in the south of the region, nearer to Central India, as per a Hindustan Times report.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted slight relief for Delhi residents on Wednesday, as the monsoon trough is expected to move closer, bringing rain and respite from the heat.

On Tuesday, Delhi's maximum temperature was measured at 39.3 degrees Celsius, the highest for the month and five degrees more than normal, according to the weather department.

The monsoon trough remained near Central India for 80% of the month, explained Mahesh Palawat, vice president at weather forecasting company Skymet, according to Hindustan Times. This resulted in moisture and cloudy skies but not enough rainfall.&nbsp;

Delhi recorded 243.3 mm of rain in June, mostly due to the heavy rain spell on June 28, which recorded 228.1 mm of rainfall in a single day. The previous year, the city received 384.6 mm of rainfall in July.

Indian airlines, IndiGo and SpiceJet had to cancel four flights to Leh on Tuesday (Jul 30), due to an unprecedented heat wave in a much-colder region earlier. Tuesday’s cancellations to India’s highest airfield are the fourth such flight disruptions in a row.&nbsp;

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) gave notice to these airlines on Tuesday for “anticipated bad weather” (red heat) as the reason for the cancellations. The flights were scheduled to land at Leh’s Kushok Bakula Rinpoche Airport.

Leh Airport sees cancellations when the temperature climbs beyond 32 degrees Celsius. Airlines decided not to operate their aircraft there as they would get stuck in Ladakh for that day.&nbsp;

“This is perhaps the first time that an extreme weather event (heat in high altitude) is causing flight cancellations at Leh airport. We cannot recall any time in the past something like this happening for three days in a row,” said airport sources.

IMD Director Sonam Lotus says, "...Steep rise in temperature, that too in Ladakh, is indeed a matter of concern. Glaciers are our natural resources and are very valuable. We get water from that glacier, so if the temperatures rise like this - when Ladakh's 30 degrees is like 40 degrees in the plains - the intense heat will melt the ice bodies faster."

On a regular day, Leh sees flight operations till around 1 pm only, as after that tailwinds get too strong to permit aircraft movement.&nbsp;

Heat is one of the major factors involved in the daily operations of arrivals and departures in places like North India and the Middle East. In Dubai, flights keep getting delayed or cancelled on a routine basis due to extreme heat.&nbsp;

With heatwaves continuing to intensify worldwide, there's a chance this week could break the record for the hottest day ever recorded, according to Carlo Buontempo, director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service.

"When you have these peaks, they tend to cluster together," he said.

It may be mentioned here, last year saw four days in a row break the record, from July 3 through July 6, as climate change, driven by the burning of fossil fuels, drove extreme heat across the Northern Hemisphere.

Since June 2023, each month has been the hottest ever recorded for that specific month, compared to past years.

However, some scientists have suggested 2024 could go beyond 2023 as the hottest year since records began, as climate change and the El Nino natural weather phenomenon — which ended in April — have pushed temperatures ever higher this year.

"As a effect of the increasing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere — we are bound to see new records being broken in the next few months, in the next few years," Buontempo said.

Global heatwave shatters record: Earth sees hottest day on record

Just a day after the world's hottest day ever was recorded, Monday, July 22 marks the hottest day on record. The record was based on preliminary data from a European Union monitoring agency.

According to Copernicus Climate Change Service, the European Union's Earth Observation Programme which has been tracking patterns since 1940, the global average surface air temperature has risen to 17.15 degrees Celsius, 0.06 degrees more than that of Sunday's.

The previous record was set in July 2023 when four consecutive days in a row recorded the hottest day. The global average surface air temperature stood at 17.08 degrees Celsius. Before that, August 2016 witnessed the hottest day on record.

"This past Monday might have set a new global record for warmest absolute global average temperature ever — by that I mean going back tens of thousands of years," said Karsten Haustein, a climate scientist at Leipzig University in Germany, as reported by Reuters.

Cities in Japan, Indonesia and China have witnessed record-breaking temperatures in recent days. Gulf countries are also experiencing stifling heat indexes and high humidity with mercury going over 60 degrees Celsius. Parts of Europe have recorded temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius.

According to scientists, the reason for these records is climate change which is growing with the burning of fossil fuels. Last year's records were resultant of climate change combined with the El Nino climate pattern, which is the unusual warming of surface temperatures in the eastern Pacific Ocean. However, that is not the case this year.
