Several risk factors such as smoking, alcoholism, increased BMI due to lack of exercise, diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, past stroke, and oral contraceptive pills can cause a stroke,” he told Times Now.

According to statistics by the World Health Organization (WHO), almost one-fifth of 17.9 million cardiovascular disease-related death globally occur in India. Unfortunately, large number of youngsters make up the tally.

WION spoke to Dr Vineet Bhatia, MD, DM, DNB (Cardiology), MNAMS, FESC, Associate Director, Cardiac sciences, Max Hospital, Patparganj, New Delhi, to comprehend young India's cardiovascular health and the reasons behind an increase in heart attacks.

Q. Firstly, What is the difference between a heart attack and a cardiac arrest?

A. A heart attack also known as Myocardial Infarction occurs when one of the blood vessels (called coronary artery in medical terms) carrying blood to the heart muscle gets suddenly blocked completely.

As we age, the blood vessels on their inner side develop deposits called “plaque.” These plaques are rich in cholesterol and other substances (notorious to promote clotting when exposed to circulating blood) and are covered by a cap. The plaque&nbsp;gradually increases in size and encroaches on the vessel lumen (the inside space of a tubular structure). This process is accelerated by risk factors like diabetes, high blood pressure, deranged lipids, smoking etc.

These risk factors are also associated with a high risk of a phenomenon called “plaque rupture” in which disruption of the cap leads to the plaque material getting exposed to the blood flowing in the vessel.

This sets into motion a rapid sequence of events which result in the formation of a clot at the site of rupture resulting in a complete blockade of blood flow beyond that point.

Since the blood and oxygen supply is cut off, the muscle cells of the heart begin to suffer damage and start to die. Irreversible damage begins within 30 minutes of blockage.

Prompt recognition of the problem and early aggressive measures to restore blood flow in the occluded vessel help prevent muscle damage. This forms the basis of the popular saying in cardiology that states “Time is Muscle”- the faster you move the more muscle you can save.

Cardiac arrest on the other hand occurs suddenly and often without any warning. It usually follows an electric malfunction in the heart causing a sudden cessation of electrical activity or irregular heartbeat (referred to as arrhythmia).

"If a person suffers pain, numbness or tingling in the legs while walking, and then it suddenly stops when they take a moment of rest, it could be time to go to the doctor," he adds.

Getting tired at the end of the day is normal, but chronic fatigue isn't.

"Fatigue is a tough one," says Bhatt, "it's a very non-specific symptom. Most fatigue is not due to heart disease, maybe just a bad night's sleep."

However, if you are suffering from chronic, constant fatigue, it might be time to see a doctor.

Cardiologist reveals five common signs that indicate you may be susceptible to heart attack

The sporting fraternity was in a state of&nbsp;shock after Musa Yamak, the undefeated German champion suffered a&nbsp;heart attack and lost his life recently. For the unversed, the 38-year-old collapsed in the ring in Munich on Saturday (May 14) while battling&nbsp;Uganda's Hamza Wandera, as per the New York Post report.

“We lost our compatriot Musa Askan Yamak, a boxer from Alucra, who won European and Asian championships, at a young age after a heart attack,” Turkish official Hasan Turan mentioned on the social media platform Twitter.

The fight was streamed live for the audience. Yamak&nbsp;collapsed&nbsp;prior to&nbsp;the third round of the contest and never recovered. He had taken a big hit from Wandera in the second round following&nbsp;which he stumbled.

Soon, the medical team came to the ring to assist him and help revive his life. He was rushed to a local hospital, however, the boxer was&nbsp;declared dead by the doctors.

“The paramedics saw turbulent scenes of emotionally charged fans and family members on site. To ensure the safety of the paramedics, we sent out a lot of patrols,” a spokesperson of the Munich Police told the German-tabloid newspaper BILD. "We then set up a protection corridor on-site so that the paramedics could work safely and conscientiously,” the spokesperson added.

Prior to Yamak, an Armenian-born Russian boxer Arrest Sahakyan had passed away early this year,&nbsp;on January 9. The 26-year-old was in a coma for ten days after which he&nbsp;was pronounced dead. Former England manager Glenn Hoddle remains in a serious condition in hospital after suffering a heart attack, a spokesperson for the former Tottenham midfielder confirmed on Sunday.

Hoddle collapsed on his 61st birthday on Saturday shortly before he was due to go on air as a pundit for BT Sport.

"Glenn remains in a serious condition in hospital after suffering a heart attack yesterday. He continues to respond well to treatment," said the spokesperson.

"The family are grateful to everyone in the football family - and beyond - that have sent kind messages of support, they are very much appreciated.

"In particular, Glenn and his family would like to publicly thank the BT Sport staff that treated him immediately on set following his collapse." England manager Gareth

Southgate was among the well-wishers for Hoddle, who made 53 appearances for the Three Lions as a player before managing his country between 1996 and 1999.
