The US has instructed Israel to maintain complete transparency regarding the airstrike on Thursday (June 6) that resulted in the death of at least 30&nbsp;individuals at a Gaza school sheltering displaced persons.

The attack came at a moment while talks are on for a ceasefire that would involve releasing hostages held by Hamas and some of the Palestinians held in Israeli jails.

At the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah, an injured boy waiting for medical assistance wept&nbsp;inconsolably after losing his father in the strike.&nbsp;

"What did we do? There are no armed people in the school. The ones there are children, playing. We play together... Why did they bomb us?" he said in the video obtained by Reuters.

The US issued a joint statement with other countries calling on Israel and Hamas to compromise to finalise a deal after eight months of war in the Gaza Strip.

Qatar's foreign ministry spokesperson, Majed Al-Ansari, stated that Hamas had not yet responded to the latest ceasefire proposal and was still reviewing it. He added that mediation efforts by Qatar, Egypt, and the US&nbsp;are ongoing.

According to Hamas sources, there was nothing new to respond to, adding that Israel’s proposal was old and the group rejected it because it did not speak of an end to the war.

Ismail Al-Thawabta, the director of the Hamas-run government media office, rejected Israel's assertion that the UN school in Nuseirat, in central Gaza, had hidden a Hamas command post.

"Israel uses ... false fabricated stories to justify the evil crime it conducted against dozens of displaced people," Thawabta told Reuters.

Israel's chief military spokesperson, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, said,&nbsp;Israel had carried out “a specific, intelligence-based strike” against “dozens of Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists who were hiding inside a UN school.”

Some of the militants had participated in the attacks against Israel on Oct&nbsp;7, he said.

“The operation took place after three days of surveillance and was intended to destroy three specific classrooms in the school where the Israeli military believed roughly 30 militants were staying and planning operations,” said Admiral Hagari.

Israel twice delayed the strike on the school complex because it had identified civilians in the area, he said.

As per&nbsp;intelligence,&nbsp;20 to 30 fighters were located in the compound, and many of them had been killed.

While US media was speculating a visit date of June 13, Netanyahu's office has clarified that this date is not final and conflicts with a Jewish holiday.

Just last week, US President Biden proposed a three-phase plan that seeks to end the conflict, secure the release of all hostages, and reconstruct Gaza without Hamas in control.

However, Netanyahu's office, as per AFP, reiterated that military operations will continue until Israel's "goals" including the destruction of Hamas, "are achieved". Hamas has not responded to this plan.

Efforts for a truce and a hostage-prisoner exchange between the two warring sides are being mediated by US, Qatari, and Egyptian officials. At the same time, Israel is facing increased diplomatic pushback.&nbsp;

"The US firmly stands with Israel and refuses to allow international bureaucrats to baselessly issue arrest warrants to Israeli leadership for false crimes," he added.

While the bill is not expected to become law, as per the report, it underscores the strong backing for Israel in Congress amidst international criticism of its Gaza campaign.&nbsp;

Last month, the White House had also condemned the ICC's decision to seek these arrest warrants.

It is unlikely to take up the measure for a vote in the Senate, which has a narrow Democratic majority.

The four hostages have been identified as 80-year-old Chaim Peri, 80-year-old Yoram Metzger, 84-year-old Amiram Cooper, and 51-year-old Nadav Popplewell.&nbsp;

As per the Israeli military, the four men were held by the Palestinian Islamist group, which now has their bodies.

Videos posted by Hamas last month had shown all four men alive. However, Hamas as per Reuters later claimed that Popplewell died from wounds inflicted by an Israeli air strike when posting his video last month.

Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, an Israeli military spokesperson, stated that new intelligence led to the confirmation of their deaths. He said that the military believes the four men were killed together in Khan Yunis, a southern city in Gaza, several months ago while Israeli forces were active in the area.

"We assess that the four of them were killed while together in the area of Khan Yunis during our operation there against Hamas."

Hagari assured that the circumstances of their deaths are being thoroughly investigated, with findings to be shared transparently with the families first&nbsp;and then with the public.

Chaim Peri, who was 80, was at his home in Kibbutz Nir Oz during the Hamas attack. In a conversation with Reuters, his son recounted that Peri tried to protect his wife by hiding her behind a sofa and eventually surrendered to the gunmen to save her.&nbsp;

Amiram Cooper and Yoram Metzger, also from Nir Oz, were captured along with their wives, who were later released during a brief truce in November.

Nadav Popplewell was taken along with his mother from her home in Kibbutz Nirim. His brother was killed during the attack, and his mother was freed in the November truce.

Reacting to the Israeli military update on the Oct 7 hostages, and the death of Israeli-British Popplewell, British foreign minister David Cameron said he was "greatly saddened to hear about the death".

"We reiterate our demand for Hamas to send all hostages home," he added.

Of the more than 250 individuals kidnapped on October 7, around 120 remain in Gaza, with many others having been declared dead by Israeli authorities.

Speaking over the plan, Mencer elaborated that "the war will be stopped for the purpose of returning the hostages" but there will be subsequent discussions. These discussions, as per the AFP report, will be on ensuring that Israel can root out the militant group from Gaza completely.

In a separate statement, Netanyahu dismissed claims that Israel had agreed to a ceasefire without its conditions being met. He said that these assertions were "incorrect."

Meanwhile, National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, a far-right coalition partner, criticised Biden's proposal and called it "irresponsible." He argued that the plan would end the war without fulfilling the cabinet's clear objective of destroying Hamas.

Ben Gvir warned his party would "break up the government."

Contrarily, opposition leader Yair Lapid, a centrist and former prime minister, urged the government to consider Biden's proposal and pledged to support Netanyahu if far-right coalition partners abandoned the government.
