At least three killed in raid at Haiti’s Central Bank

<p>Haiti’s healthcare system is on the verge of collapse as gang violence has left no hope for the treatment of victims. According to media reports, several hospitals were set on fire and doctors murdered by gang members, while medical supplies were also snapped.</p>

<p>As a result of this, Haiti now has only one operational public hospital in the capital city of Port-au-Prince. Mackynzie Archer, a consultant advising leading medical NGOs in Haiti said, “The healthcare system in Port-au-Prince is basically nonexistent,” adding that the situation is deteriorating quickly.</p>

<h2><strong>US starts evacuating citizens</strong></h2>

<p>The spiralling violence has forced the US to start charter flights from Haiti to evacuate its citizens. A charter flight carrying dozens of US citizens from violence-hit Haiti landed in Miami Sunday (Mar 17), said State Department officials. The government-chartered flight carrying 30 US citizens landed at the Miami International Airport. This comes after the US embassy in Port-au-Prince earlier this month urged all Americans to leave the country amid spiralling gang violence.</p>

<p>"It's just terrible ... The suffering, you can only imagine," a passenger of the flight was quoted as saying by local media. "Haiti is my homeland and it's very stressful to see the homeland going through this act of violence, destruction ... and they are our neighbours," they added.</p>

<h2>Haiti’s main airport shut down</h2>

<p>The Port-au-Prince Airport has already been shut down due to ongoing gang attacks that have engulfed the nation in recent weeks, exacerbating the risk of famine.</p>

<p>Reports from government and aid agencies over the weekend highlight incidents of aid supply looting as the crisis deepens.</p>

<h2>USA’s response</h2>

<p>In response, the State Department announced on Saturday (Mar 16) that it would arrange limited charter flights for American citizens departing from the relatively calmer northern city of Cap-Haïtien.</p>

<p>However, officials cautioned that ground transportation to Cap-Haïtien could not be guaranteed, advising citizens to consider using the charter flights "only if you believe you can safely reach Cap-Haïtien airport".</p>

<p>"We encourage US&nbsp;citizens still in Haiti who seek to depart to contact the Department of State using the crisis intake form on our website if they have not already done so," the department said.</p>

The Caribbean nation of Haiti has been ravaged by heavily-armed criminal gangs. United Nations estimates that 80% of Haitian capital, Port-Au-Prince, is now under the control of gangs. Word on the street though, is that all of Port-Au-Prince is veritably controlled by gangs. Killings, rapes and kidnappings have surged leading to a violent uprising by civilian vigilante groups. Since April, at least 264 suspected gang members have been killed by vigilante groups. The resulting humanitarian crisis has internally displaced 165,000 people. <p>This year, up to March 15, "531 people were killed, 300 injured and 277 kidnapped in gang-related incidents that took place mainly in the capital, Port-au-Prince," she told reporters in Geneva.</p>

<p>In the first two weeks of March alone, gang clashes left at least 208 dead, 164 injured and 101 kidnapped, Hurtado said.</p>

<p>"Most of the victims were killed or injured by snipers who were reportedly randomly shooting at people in their homes or on the streets," she added.</p>

<p>Across Haiti, students and teachers have been frequently hit by stray bullets, with social media chatter from the region claiming many to have been caught in the crossfire between security forces and a group of gangsters. Kidnappings of parents and young children around schools have increased, due to which many schools have been forced to close.</p>

<p>Without the protective school environment, "many children have been forcibly recruited by armed gangs", Hurtado said.</p>

<h2><strong>Haiti turmoil: Why is it worsening?</strong></h2>

<p>Haiti is among the poorest of nations in the Americas. The country has been under the grip of an increasingly worsening political and economic crisis since the assassination of President Jovonel Moise. Various armed groups now control more than half of the country, reports say.</p>

<p>The chronic instability and violence have sent food prices surging, and half the population does not have enough to eat, the United Nations said.</p>

<p>At least 160,000 people have been displaced and are living in precarious circumstances, with a quarter living in makeshift settlements with limited access to basic sanitation, she added.</p>
