Google officially launched its artificial intelligence chatbot, called Bard, to take on rival Open AI’s ChatGPT, which is backed by Microsoft.

At an annual Google developers conference in Silicon Valley on Thursday, the tech giant announced that its new tool will be rolled out in over 180 countries.

Google said that its AI chatbot has been imbibed into 25 products, including Maps and Gmail, and will let users&nbsp;write mail responses with the help of Bard.

"Seven years into our journey as an AI-first company, we are at an exciting inflection point," Sundar Pichai, Google's CEO, told thousands of developers gathered for the event.

"With generative AI, we're taking the next step, with a bold and responsible approach, we are reimagining all of our products."

However, one noticeable key decision Google has taken differently than Microsoft is that unlike ChatGPT which is ingrained into Bing search, Bard chatbot will not be included in the Google search.

How Bard is different from ChatGPT

The tech firm said that its traditional Google search will still be used for finding and seeking information, such as locating something to purchase.

Whereas Bard AI chatbot, which has a persona that can hold human-like conversations, will be used for “creative collaboration” for instance, to generate software code or write a caption for a photo.

A separate AI technology is coming to Google search that is called Search Generative Experience.

The company's AI efforts would be carried out in a "bold and responsible" way, senior product director Jack Krawczyk said during the briefing.

Which countries can try new Google search

The new Google search with AI is yet to be released for mass internet users. The first to get exclusive access would be US users in coming weeks via a wait list. During this initial phase, Google will monitor the quality, speed and cost of search results.

Google said Bard is now available with no wait list in 180 countries. Initially, the Google Bard chatbot was only available in the UK and the US. Interested Indian users can now join the waitlist for the AI chatbot via the Google Bard official website.

Thanks to such efforts, Google has today acquired a 90 per cent share of the search market. Google in shock as Samsung considers ditching Chrome for Microsoft Bing

The Alphabet Inc-owned tech giant had originally announced Bard last month and said last week that it would integrate generative AI features across the apps in its Workspace productivity suite.&nbsp;

Bard has been designed to respond to written prompts using information sourced from websites and has also been seen as Google’s bid to compete with the viral ChatGPT. While the Google AI is still an “early experiment” the company was “extremely excited…watching how people are using this product in a way that’s boosting their creativity,” said Google employee and product lead for Bard, Jack Krawczyk, as per the Guardian.

“You can use Bard to boost your productivity, accelerate your ideas and fuel your curiosity. You might ask Bard to give you tips to reach your goal of reading more books this year, explain quantum physics in simple terms or spark your creativity by outlining a blog post,” said Google VP of product Sissie Hsiao and VP of research Eli Collins, in a blog post on Tuesday.&nbsp;

In the recent blog post, the VPs also noted that since Bard is powered by a research large language model (LLM), “a lightweight and optimized version” of LaMDA, it gets things wrong sometimes.&nbsp;

It added, “because they learn from a wide range of information that reflects real-world biases and stereotypes, those sometimes show up in their outputs…can provide inaccurate, misleading or false information while presenting it confidently.”&nbsp;

Therefore, a screenshot of the chatbot shared by Google also shows that the users are first presented with a blank chat box with a disclaimer which reads, “Bard may display inaccurate or offensive information that doesn’t represent Google’s views.”

This also comes after shares of Google’s parent company plunged by at least eight per cent and it lost more than $100 billion in market value on February 8 when Bard had flubbed an answer when it was first introduced. Google has also previously explained that Bard would work particularly well for “NORA” queries which mean questions which have “no one right answer”.&nbsp;

Alphabet Inc’s Google has decided to step in with its own chatbot named 'Bard' after its rival Microsoft-backed OpenAI and its AI chatbot, ChatGPT, garnered significant attention since its launch back in November. However, Bard is still in the testing phase now but the tech giant has since confirmed that it will start public testing soon. The announcement was made in a blog post by Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who also spoke about how&nbsp;AI-based features will also be integrated into Google search as well.&nbsp;

What is Bard?

Based on Google’s Language Model for Dialogue Application or LaMDA, it is soon going to be the tech giant’s AI chatbot. Pichai, in the blog post, has described Bard as an “experimental conversational AI service,” which will be opened “to trusted testers ahead of making it more widely available to the public in the coming weeks.”&nbsp;

It added, “Bard seeks to combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence and creativity of our large language models. It draws on information from the web to provide fresh, high-quality responses.” However, you might not be able to sign up for it just yet as it is not publicly available.&nbsp;

One of the examples given in the announcement blog post of what Bard could do, Pichai wrote, that the AI chatbot “can be an outlet for creativity, and a launchpad for curiosity, helping you to explain new discoveries from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a 9-year-old, or learn more about the best strikers in football right now, and then get drills to build your skills.”

Furthermore, Google has also said that it is producing a “lightweight model version of LaMDA” which would require “significantly less computing power, enabling us to scale to more users, allowing for more feedback.”&nbsp;

Is it different from ChatGPT?

Fundamentally, no, since both allow users to ask questions, request something or give a prompt based on which the AI would generate a human-like response. Additionally, both Microsoft and Google plan on integrating this as a part of their search engines, Bing and Google search, respectively, which as per reports account for a big chunk of their revenue.&nbsp;

While it is known that ChatGPT’s knowledge is limited to the events till 2021, Google has remained vague about the knowledge Bard would possess, however, reports suggest that since the latter will draw information from the internet it will have more access to data than the former. Notably, Bard will be built on Transformer technology which is at the core of ChatGPT but the technology was pioneered by Google and made open-source in 2017.&nbsp;

How did Bard lead a dip in Google’s shares?

On Wednesday (February 8), shares of Google’s parent company plunged by at least eight per cent and it lost more than $100 billion in market value. This comes after the Bard chatbot showed an inaccurate answer. First pointed out by Reuters, there was an error in the clip posted by Google which introduced Bard, on Monday.&nbsp;
