Polls opened in presidential and legislative elections in Ghana Saturday, poised to be a litmus test for democracy in a region shaken by extremist violence and coups. Watch for more details!

Polls Open in General Election in Ghana Amid Economic Crisis

Ghanaians voted in elections on Saturday with frontrunners Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP ruling party and opposition NDC party ex-president John Mahama facing off in a tight race for the country's top post.

Ghana's struggling economy dominated the election after the West African gold and cacao producer went through a debt default, high inflation and negotiations for a $3 billion IMF bailout.

Voters are choosing a successor to President Nana Akufo-Addo, who steps down after his allowed two, four-year terms, and they will also elect the country's new parliament.

Early morning turnout appeared fairly slow in parts of the capital Accra, but steady in other neighbourhoods with the streets of the capital calm. Muslim women in colourful headscarves waited on wooden benches in the Nima district while students and shop workers cast their ballots in middle-class Stayaways.

"We want to vote for change, the economic situation is very hard," retired policeman James Nsiah said, waiting to cast his ballot at a booth in the Jamestown area of Accra.

Touting a slogan "Break the 8" -- a reference to the usual two, four-year terms in power -- the NPP hopes Bawumia can lead them to an unprecedented third term in office. But he struggled to break away from criticism of Akufo-Addo's economic record.

Wearing a traditional white smock, Bawumia voted early on Saturday in his hometown of Walewale in the north of Ghana.

Economic frustrations

Inflation slowed from more than 50 per cent to around 23 per cent, and other macroeconomic indicators are stabilising after the debt restructuring and the IMF deal. But many Ghanaians still say they struggle with costs of living and scarce jobs and a depreciated cedi currency.

Frustration over the economy has opened the way for a comeback challenge from opposition candidate Mahama, who was president from 2012 to 2017 but who has since failed twice in presidential bids.

The NDC flag-bearer says he will "reset" Ghana and introduce a "24-hour economy", extending industrial hours to create jobs and more production and also renegotiate parts of the IMF deal.

"Other elections have not been as obvious," Mahama said voting in his northern hometown. "With this one everybody can tell the direction because of the abysmal performance of the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government."

Some analysts gave him an edge because of voter dismay with NPP economics, but the former president faced criticism from those who remember financial woes and massive power cuts during his time in office.

First-time voter and visual arts student Abdullah Mohammed, 19, said he may have benefited from Akufo-Addo's free high school programme, but he saw the need for change with high costs weighing on families.

"I just want a good president who will bring changes. I don't really care if it is Bawumia or Mahama," he said in Accra's Nima district.

Shoe saleswoman Esther Adobea said the economic situation was on her mind, but she was willing to give Bawumia a chance to make things better.

"I can see he can handle the country for us. Our economy is not good but he can do better," she said in the Ayawaso area.

Both major candidates are from the north of the country -- traditionally an NDC stronghold, but now more fragmented -- making the region a key battleground.

While the economy was key, Ghana also faces an increasing risk of spillover in its northern regions from jihadist conflicts in Niger and Burkina Faso, where military juntas rule after coups.

The spread of illegal gold mining also became an election issue. Akufo-Addo promised to stop illegal mining, but it has expanded, poisoning riverways and impacting cacao farmlands -- a major source of export income.

The work, according to the GWR also had to be of a professional standard and they also had to provide evidence that the paintings presented were done by Ace-Liam himself.

About Ace-Liam’s journey and process

His mother Chantelle, who is also an artist, told the GWR that she discovered her son’s passion for painting when he was just six months old.

“While learning to crawl, I spread out a piece of unstretched canvas on the floor and dropped some paint on it as a way to keep him busy while I worked on a commission painting,” she explained.

Subsequently, Ace-Liam ended up “spreading the paint all over the canvas” and created his first masterpiece titled ‘The crawl’ said his mother. She added, “It was clear that he found a lot of joy in it.”

Since then the toddler had garnered a lot of attention including that of the First Lady of the Republic of Ghana. “He has created a buzz and heightened the conversation about art appreciation,” said Chantelle.

Ace-Liam participated in his first group exhibition, The Soundout Premium Exhibition at the Museum of Science and Technology in Ghana with more than 20 of his paintings.

A total of 10 of his artworks were displayed and up for sale out of which nine were sold during the exhibition.

She also spoke about his process and how the one-year-old loves the feel of the paint on his hands and expressing himself through painting.

“It’s a fun and creative outlet for him, and he enjoys the freedom to explore and create without limitations,” Chantelle told the GWR.

Even after he started talking, his mother said he would ask if he could paint. She also explained that her son’s work is more about expression and exploration rather than conveying specific messages.

Chantelle described Ace-Liam’s painting sessions as spontaneous and guided by his mood which can last anywhere from half an hour to a couple of days. “Once he’s done, he says ‘mama finish’.”

What’s next?

After he won the record, his family, according to the GWR, is now looking for opportunities to place him in an environment where his artistic talent could be nurtured through quality education.

“We are hoping to seek international scholarship opportunities as well as international opportunities for him to sell his artworks,” said Chantelle.

She also advised parents to encourage and support their child’s interests. “Every child is unique, and nurturing their passions can lead to amazing discoveries and achievements.”

A 29-year-old environmental activist and forestry student from Ghana is making headlines after he set a new world record for hugging more than 1,100 trees in one hour.

The record-breaking feat took place in the Tuskegee National Forest, one of the four national forests in the state of Alabama, United States, the Guinness World Records (GWR) announced on Friday (Apr 26).

About the record

Abubakar Tahiru took his love for trees to the next level after he rushed through the forest hugging a total of 1,123 trees in one hour, which according to the record-keeping organisation is an average of 19 trees per minute.

For this record, a hug was defined as “both arms wrapped around a tree in a close embrace,” said the GWR.

The criteria for the record also included rules like no tree should be hugged more than once and any damage to the trees can result in disqualification.

Tahiru, according to the GWR, hugged one three for around three seconds and easily surpassed the minimum requirement of 700 to become the first holder of this record.

‘Incredibly rewarding’

Speaking about the record-breaking feat, the 29-year-old said that the hardest part of the record attempt was to quickly move between the trees while ensuring that each hug met the criteria.

He also said that the “repetitive hugging motion” was “quite tiring.”

“Achieving this world record feels incredibly rewarding,” said Tahiru, as quoted by the GWR. He added, “It’s a meaningful gesture to highlight the crucial role of trees in our ecosystem and the urgency of environmental conservation.”

Ghana LGBTQ: We live in fear of 'snitches'

Members of Ghana's LGBTQ community and activists are waiting to see whether the West African country's president will sign into law a bill that would further restrict their rights and likely worsen the persecution many face.

LGBTQ+ Ghanaians await court ruling on restrictive new law

Ghana’s parliament, on Wednesday (Feb 28), passed a controversial bill to severely restrict LGBTQ rights in the country a week after it rejected a proposal to water down some of its measures including non-custodial sentences such as counselling for gay sex instead of jail terms.

Ghana’s parliament passes bill to expand crackdown on LGBTQ+ rights

An anti-LGBTQ bill passed by Ghana's parliament, which could derail international aid for the West African country if it becomes law according to an internal government memo, has not yet reached the desk of President Nana Akufo-Addo. In his first comments on the bill's passage, he said Ghana will not backslide on its human rights record, and added that the bill had been challenged in the Supreme Court.

Ghana anti-LGBTQ bill invites world condemnation

Ghana’s parliament, on Wednesday (Feb 28), passed a controversial bill to severely restrict LGBTQ rights in the country a week after it rejected a proposal to water down some of its measures including non-custodial sentences such as counselling for gay sex instead of jail terms.

The bill, which has been widely condemned by rights activists, still needs to be signed by the president before it becomes law.

So far, President Nana Akufo-Addo has neither confirmed nor denied that he would pass the ‘Human Sexual Rights and Family Values’ bill, but he is widely expected to do so. However, observers, as per AFP, believe it is unlikely before an election in December.

The president has said that it would sign the bill if the majority of Ghanaians want him to.

While homosexuality is already illegal in the West African country and punishable by up to three years in prison, under the new law the maximum sentence would increase to five years.

Bill makes identifying as LGBTQ+ illegal

The bill would also make identifying as LGBTQ+ illegal and those convicted could get a prison sentence of up to three years.

The new bill has also sought to punish the promotion and advocation of LGBTQ rights and would give custodial sentences to people who are convicted of doing so. It would also make the distribution of material deemed supportive of LGBTQ+ rights illegal.

The bill, sponsored by a group of traditional leaders from the country’s Ghanaian, Christian and Muslim communities was approved unanimously following a third reading in the parliament.

Proposal to water down measures rejected

Last week (Feb 21), Ghana’s parliament rejected a proposal to ease some of its harsh measures like giving non-custodial sentences such as counselling and community service for gay sex instead of jail terms.

Ruling party lawmaker Alexander Afenyo-Markin who proposed the amendment argued that imprisoning people for LGBTQ+ offences would “worsen homosexuality and its promotion,” and defeat the bill’s original intent.

‘Absolutely wrong’

A member from the Big 18 & Human Rights Coalition, an umbrella group of lawyers and activists in Ghana said that the bill criminalises a person’s identity and said that they call on the president to reject it.

“You cannot criminalise a person’s identity and that’s what the bill is doing and it’s absolutely wrong,” Takyiwaa Manuh told AFP. “We want to impress on the president not to assent to the bill, it totally violates the human rights of the LGBT community.”

In 2021, when the bill was first proposed, the United Nations said that it would create “a system of state-sponsored discrimination and violence” against sexual minorities.

A 27-year-old lesbian and LGBTQ+ activist who asked not to be named told Reuters, last week that the community was in a panic as the bill nears its passage. “We would now have to be extra careful with our way of life,” she said.

A 27-year-old lesbian and LGBTQ+ activist who asked not to be named told Reuters, last week that the community was in a panic as the bill nears its passage. “We would now have to be extra careful with our way of life,” she said. Ghana, the second-largest producer of cocoa in the world, may not be able to fulfill some of its crop contracts for a second season due to weak harvest, raises the possibility of a global shortage, according to a report by Bloomberg.

Sources familiar with the situation, told Bloomberg that farmers in Ghana are anticipated to harvest the least amount in 13 years during the season ending next month, falling short of official projections by almost a quarter. According to them, the shortfall is preventing the industry’s regulator from fulfilling current contracts and forcing it to postpone the supply of 44,000 metric tons of cocoa for future harvests.

The decision would put additional pressure on the world’s cocoa markets, where prices have increased this year due to extreme weather, which has reduced output among leading growers. The 2017 main-crop harvest in Ivory Coast, the greatest exporter in the world, is predicted to decrease by about a fifth from the previous year.

The actual harvest is now expected to be around 650,000 tons, down from the initial estimate of 850,000 tons by the Ghana Cocoa Board, which was hampered by a lack of fertilizers, spraying chemicals, and sales to the neighboring Ivory Coast, where a stronger currency offers better returns for farmers, the sources said. They said that the regulator had already renewed around 40,000 tons of contracts during the previous season.

Leading producers’ output problems will probably put the globe on track for a third consecutive supply shortfall. Major chocolate producers have cautioned that, given the rise in wholesale costs, they cannot rule out further consumer price hikes.

The problem for Ghana comes on top of difficulties in trying to secure funds to buy beans for the crop in the years 2023–2024, highlighting worries about the debt crisis in the West African country. The Ghana Cocoa Board is looking for additional methods of funding the upcoming season, which begins on October 1.

The initial disbursement of approximately $600 million is crucial for Ghana's ongoing economic recovery, reports said. Another $600 million will be released in November, reports added. The remaining funds are expected to be disbursed in equal portions of $350 million every six months, subject to regular IMF reviews.

Ghana, with its economy already burdened by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war, has implemented several tough economic measures to secure the IMF package, including tax increases and imposing losses on domestic investors.

Additionally, Ghana has obtained financial assurances from a bilateral-creditors group co-chaired by China and France, further bolstering its efforts to stabilize the economy.

The $3 billion loan program, spanning three years, seeks to replenish Ghana's foreign-exchange reserves, which have plummeted nearly 50 percent since reaching a peak in August 2021. The central bank significantly utilised these reserves to defend the cedi against external pressures.

While the IMF loan provides a much-needed lifeline, Ghana continues its efforts to secure additional financial support. The government is currently in talks with the World Bank for an extra $900 million of budget support over three years. Simultaneously, negotiations with Eurobond holders to restructure $13 billion of debt owed to private investors are also underway.

The Ghanaian currency, Cedi, became the worst-performing currency in the world after it lost 45.1 percent of its value to the dollar in 2022. And in Nigeria, the central bank has extended the timeline to swap out its old currency for re-designed notes after the change triggered a cash shortage, forcing businesses to close and leaving millions unable to withdraw their money. What's causing this tumble and what really happens to the old, dilapidated currency notes?
