The Gaza ceasefire is facing renewed pressure after an Israeli air strike killed nine Palestinians and wounded 14 others at a police station in Gaza.

Israeli forces said the strike targeted Hamas militants operating from the civilian police station. In a separate strike in the Nuseirat refugee camp, another Palestinian was killed, taking the reported death toll from Wednesday’s strikes to at least 10.

The Israeli military said four senior commanders from Hamas’ military wing were killed and alleged that they were involved in planning and directing attacks against Israeli forces.

US President Joe Biden expressed deep sorrow and anger on Monday (Dec 2) following Israel's confirmation that the body of a soldier killed during Hamas's October 7 attack last year — an American citizen — was held by Hamas in Gaza.

Senior US and Israeli officials will meet in early December to address American concerns over harm to civilians caused by military operations in Gaza, the State Department said Tuesday.

The December meeting will be the first of a new channel designed to "inform the ongoing work that the State Department has to do to make assessments about the use of US-provided weapons," spokesperson Matthew Miller said.&nbsp;

Israel's use of the weapons would breach US law if it were determined the country had deliberately targeted and killed civilians, and US authorities are looking at specific instances to see whether that is the case.

"There are a number of incidents that we have had questions about and we've had concerns about," Miller said.

He added that "we set up this new channel because we wanted to formalize a mechanism for getting answers to some of these questions."

Miller declined to specify where the meeting would take place.

The Biden administration has long called for such a channel, which was included in a letter Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin sent to Israel in mid-October.

The letter additionally gave Israel a month to allow more assistance into Gaza or face cutoffs of some US weapons.

However, the United States ultimately decided not to take action, despite Israel not meeting metrics on the number of aid trucks and a new UN-backed assessment warning of imminent famine in Gaza.

Pope Francis, for the first time, labels Israel's actions in Gaza as 'genocide'; calls for investigation

The United States on Tuesday (Nov 12) said that Israel was not violating US laws regarding the level of humanitarian aid allowed into Gaza, but urged further progress. This comes a month after US President Joe Biden's administration set a November 13 deadline for Israel to improve access to humanitarian assistance or risk the suspension of some military aid.

<h2>US's 30-day deadline to Israel</h2>

Last month, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin sent a letter to Israel expressing concern over Gaza's humanitarian conditions. Setting a 30-day deadline until November 13, they asked Israel to comply with US laws on permitting humanitarian assistance.

While the US acknowledged improvements, including new border crossings and a gradual increase in aid flow, State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel said: “The overall humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to be unsatisfactory”.

However, when asked previously if Israel had met US demands, he said “We have not made an assessment that they (Israel) are in violation of US law.”

Patel said that though the steps are insufficient in&nbsp;fully addressing the humanitarian crisis, they are&nbsp;in the “right direction.”

“In the context of the letter, it's not about whether we find something satisfactory or not; it's what are the actions that we're seeing.”

“These actions that we have seen, we think that these are steps in the right direction,” he said.

“After this 30-day period is up, we are constantly assessing and evaluating, and if we do not see consistent progress, if we do not see the results on the ground, then we will, of course, make appropriate assessments about their compliance with international law,” he said.
