Police in the western Indian state of Maharashtra launched a major operation against Maoists Wednesday morning (Jul 17) in the Gadchiroli district. The operation, which began at 10 am and lasted for six hours, ended with the killing of 12 Maoists. Several weapons were also recovered from them, including 3 AK47s, 2 INSAS, 1 carbine, and an SLR.

Two police officers suffered bullet injuries during the operation but are out of danger now. They are being treated in Nagpur, as per media reports.

Along with the 26 bodies, the police also recovered a large amount of Naxal literature and weapons.

Four jawans of the C-60 unit were injured in the encounter that lasted for about eight hours. The jawans were&nbsp;airlifted to Nagpur and are undergoing treatment at Orange City Hospital in Nagpur.

There have been five deaths from the disease in the force, tasked to guard Indian fronts with Pakistan and Bangladesh, including the death of a personnel who was killed in a road accident and his COVID-19 positive report came later.

The Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), tasked to guard the 3,488-km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, reported 18 new infections while one personnel recovered in the last 24 hours, the officials said.

It has a total of 421 COVID-19 cases, out of which 151 personnel are under treatment while 270 have recovered from the disease.

The 90,000 personnel strength mountain-warfare trained force has had three deaths from the pandemic.

A total of 54 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel also tested positive for coronavirus on Sunday, while nine personnel were discharged after recovery, the officials said.

Out of the total 1,564 cases in the country's largest paramilitary force, 808 personnel are under treatment while 747 have recovered.

The about 3.25-lakh personnel strength force has reported nine deaths from the pandemic.

The maximum number of fresh COVID-19 cases in the three forces are of that personnel who are joining their units back and are put under mandatory quarantine of 14 days before they resume active duty, a senior official said.

A total of 22 CRPF personnel tested coronavirus positive on Sunday in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district, around 170 kms from here, an official said.

These men had rejoined duty a few days ago and were placed under institutional quarantine, where they were detected with the infection, he said.

Around 350-400 CRPF troopers were on leave and began returning to their reporting stations in the last 20-25 days, Gadchiroli Superintendent of Police Shailesh Balkawde told PTI.

"Personnel who return are kept in 14-day institutional quarantine and tested for coronavirus after seven to eight days from the date of their return. A total of 22 CRPF personnel tested positive on Sunday," he said.

Death toll climbs to 16 in Naxal attack on police vehicle in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli

Seven Naxals were killed in an encounter with the security forces in the Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh on Friday.

Earlier Maharashtra police had killed 37 Naxals in the Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra.&nbsp;

The increasing number of encounters is the outcome of the ongoing anti-Maoists operation in the red corridor region.

The increasing number of encounters is the outcome of the ongoing anti-Maoists operation in the red corridor region. On Thursday sixty Maoists including 13 minors and 20 females surrendered before the Chhattisgarh police at restive Narayanpur district of Bastar. Seven naxals killed in encounter with security forces in Chhattisgarh

A day after eliminating 16 Naxals in Karnasur jungle, the police in Gadchiroli district of eastern Maharashtra killed at least four rebels in a fresh encounter this evening, a top official said.&nbsp;

Other news reports put the number of slain Naxals at six.&nbsp;

The gun-battle took place in Rajaram Khandla jungle in Jimalgatta area of the district, said Inspector General of Police (Anti-Naxal Operations) Sharad Shelar.

The elite C-60 commandos of district police were involved in the operation, said another senior police official.

Shelar said that the exact number of slain Naxals was being confirmed, but at least four rebels have been eliminated.

Shelar also said that police expected to retrieve bodies of many more Naxals from the site of Sunday's encounter, as the combing operation had been made difficult by the heavy rains in the area.

As of now, police have found 16 bodies, and identified 11 of them. The encounter took place between the Naxals and a team of police commandos and the CRPF in Kasansur forest in Bhamragad yesterday morning.

Maharashtra Director General of Police Satish Mathur, earlier on Monday, attributed the success to accurate and specific intelligence, the low morale of the Naxals and divisions in their ranks.&nbsp;

Union Minister Hansraj Ahir has clarified his statement about calling doctors to &quot;join the Naxals&quot;. Ahir said he respects the doctors and the remark was an outburst in anger after a few doctors skipped an event which the minister came to attend.

On Monday, Ahir got upset by the absence of doctors who didn&#39;t attend an inauguration ceremony in 24x7 pharmacy store in a government hospital in Chandrapur, Maharashtra.

&quot;The organiser was himself absent. I have not spoken against the profession but a particular doctor. Whatever I said was the civil surgeon and no one else. I respect doctors from the bottom of my heart. I just showed my anger on absence of some doctors from the event,&quot; ANI reported Ahir as saying.
