French police have arrested a man suspected of trying to set a&nbsp;synagogue&nbsp;ablaze in the southern French city of La Grande-Motte on Saturday, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said.

About 200 police officers had been hunting for the suspect, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said earlier, adding that the attacker had set fire to several entry doors of the&nbsp;synagogue&nbsp;and several cars nearby.

BFM TV said the suspect was a 33-year-old Algerian. Local police declined to give details.

The anti-terrorism prosecutor's office, which was put in charge of the investigation, said early on Sunday that a suspect had been arrested in Nîmes on Saturday evening.

"Before the police could intervene, (the suspect) opened fire on the (police), which returned fire. The man was wounded in the face," the office said in a statement, adding that two other people were taken into custody.

A policeman was slightly injured when a gas bottle exploded as police secured the site of the attack on Saturday morning, Attal said.

"This is an antisemitic attack. Once more, our Jewish compatriots are targeted," Attal said on X. "In the face of antisemitism, in the face of violence, we will never allow ourselves to be intimidated."

After visiting the&nbsp;synagogue, Attal said an "absolute tragedy" had been narrowly averted after firefighters and police arrived quickly at the scene.

Local media reported earlier that the suspect had set fire to two cars, one of which contained at least one gas bottle, in the&nbsp;synagogue's parking area at about 8:30 a.m. (0630 GMT).

Police protection of&nbsp;synagogues, and Jewish schools and shops would be stepped up across France, the government said.

Over the weekend, the Socialists torpedoed the hopes of Huguette Bello, 73, a former communist member of parliament and the president of the regional council in France's overseas territory La Reunion, who had support from the other left-wing parties.

The LFI, in turn, rejected 73-year-old Laurence Tubiana, an economist and climate specialist without political affiliation, who had the backing of the Socialists, Communists and Green party.

On Friday, just before Soviet-era rock group Picnic was to perform its hit "Afraid of Nothing" four armed men burst into Crocus City Hall, a 6,200-seat concert hall outside Moscow. This attack was the deadliest attack inside Russia for two decades. Previously, in 2004, a siege at Beslan school had claimed 300 lives — more than half of them children.

AFP has reported citing sources that the powerful Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin (41) is likely to be retained as he has received assurances from Macron to that effect.

The future of Bruno Le Maire, the Finance and Economy Minister, remains uncertain as it isn't clear whether he'll agree to work under Attal who was a junior minister in his own department.

There is uncertainty over the position of Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna just as it is with Transport Minister Clement Beaune's.

Attal will also have to find a replacement for the education ministry which he himself previously held.

Though Macron's decision to choose Attal as the PM signalled his intention to infuse young blood into his government, Attal's name wasn't finalised before some negotiations.

AFP said that before finalising Attal, Macron had to overcome opposition from some cabinet ministers and also key powerbrokers in French politics. These included ex-premier Edouard Philippe and Alexis Kohler, presidential chief of staff.

Reports in French media also said that there was some dispute before Macron zeroed in on Attal's name. Some reports have suggested that Attal will be overpowered by Macron, a seasoned hand in the presidential office by now.

In the French political system, the president is responsible for setting general policies while the job of running day-to-day government affairs falls on the shoulders of the prime minister. It is hence, the PM who may&nbsp;get more flak in case of any political or administrative turbulence.

It was seen an imperative for Macron to reshuffle his cabinet to prevent projecting an image of himself as a 'lame duck' leader. His centrist government has lost the parliamentary majority after 2022 elections.

Macron will not be able to contest 2027 presidential elections, a fact which is seen by many to be Marine Le Pen's best chance to become president.

French President Emmanuel Macron has named Gabriel Attal (34) as the new Prime Minister of the country. Attal will be the youngest French prime minister ever and the first openly gay person to hold the office.&nbsp;Attal will succeed former PM Elisabeth Borne who resigned yesterday.

"The president of the republic appointed Mr Gabriel Attal prime minister, and tasked him with forming a government," a statement from Macron's office read.

In the French system of governance, the president formulates policies while the work of minding day-to-day function of the government falls on the shoulders of the PM, and he/ she is often the first one to face the flak in case of governance issues.

His political career began when he participated in the 2006 youth protests in France. He graduated from Sciences Po or Paris Institute of Political Sciences in 2012 with a Master's in Public Affairs.&nbsp;
