Frontline workers, tourism industry to get Covid booster shots in Sri Lanka  

<p>A real-world study conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research-National Institute of Epidemiology (ICMR-NIE), based on vaccination and hospitalisation data from Tamil Nadu Police (frontline workers) has reaffirmed the effectiveness of<a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/coronavirus?page=1"> COVID-19 vaccines</a> in preventing death.</p>

<p>This study is significant because of its potential to further dispel the myths over vaccines. The result also comes at a time when information regarding the real-world effectiveness of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/coronavirus-vaccine">COVID-19 vaccines</a> for severe disease is unavailable in India currently.</p>

<p>Data utilised for this study was for the period between February 1&nbsp;and May 14, 2021. This was also the time period when India was reeling under the second wave of the pandemic.</p>

<p>As per the study, of 117,524 police personnel in Tamil Nadu,&nbsp;32,792 received one dose, 67,673 received two doses while the remaining 17,059 were unvaccinated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Among over 117,000 police personnel, 31 deaths were reported between April 13 and May 14, 2021. The median age of the deceased was 52, their age ranged between 34-58 and it comprised 29 men and two women. Of the 31 who succumbed, four had taken two doses of the vaccine, seven had taken one dose and the remaining 20 were unvaccinated.</p>

<p>It adds that, compared to unvaccinated individuals, the relative risk of COVID-19 death among those who received one and two doses were 0.18 and 0.05 respectively.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It also goes on to state that, "vaccine effectiveness in preventing COVID-19 deaths with one and two doses was 82 per cent and 95 per cent respectively. The report mentions that the results of this study (TN Police and ICMR NIE) are consistent with the published studies showing the effectiveness of vaccines against severe disease."</p>

<p>This study does have its limitations such as&nbsp;not having specific figures for each vaccine (Covaxin and Covishield), no individual data for co-morbidities, age, and previous exposure to COVID-19.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Study conducted by vaccine makers are done under very controlled conditions and in an ideal scenario, but this one is a real-world trial on frontline workers," Dr. Manoj V Murhekar, Director NIE told WION. He also added that a more detailed study was being conducted across 10 hospitals in India, by taking into consideration the patient details, age, co-morbidities, etc. The results of this study are expected to be available by the end of this month.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Mr. Shankar Jiwal, Commissioner of Police, Chennai, there was huge vaccine hesitancy among the police personnel, ministerial staff and family members, owing to panic and a lack of clarity in the initial stages. However, the situation gradually improved, thanks to awareness campaigns, circulars, systematic approach and efforts of the department.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"About two months ago, 71 per cent of the personnel had taken their first dose, whereas 10 per cent had taken their second shot. <p>One of the longest medical drama's on TV, '<strong>Grey's Anatomy</strong>', is back with its 17th season and gives us a glimpse of how the medical fraternity is dealing with the <strong>COVID-19 pandemic</strong>. While we get to see familiar faces like&nbsp;Ellen Pompeo,&nbsp;Chandra Wilson,&nbsp;James Pickens Jr. among many others, there is also the return of&nbsp;a very loved&nbsp;character.</p>

<p>Just like the rest of the world, Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital is nothing like it was before. Chaos looms around it with both doctors and families of patients feeling nothing but helpless. Being converted into a COVID centre, there are fewer surgeries being performed, and more doctors declaring the time of death of their countless COVID-19 patients. Right from the entry of the hospital to the surgical wings, you will only find doctors, patients who are minors and&nbsp;their guardians. Patients with illnesses other than COVID are being transferred to other hospitals. The waiting room of Grey Sloan Memorial has now been transferred to the parking lot with doctors frequently visiting to give the families an update. This is a cross over episode with 'Station 19',&nbsp;who are bringing cases of extreme burn to the hospital.</p>

<p>Grey's Anatomy displays the courage, goodwill and commitment of the medical community during these testing times. At the starting of the episode, we are shown how&nbsp;Miranda Bailey tries to keep it together as she watches her husband Ben Warren go do his job (firefighter) in the middle of the pandemic and reminds herself that they need to save lives. Even with a heart condition and sprain in the leg, she is always up and about in the hospital trying to manage everything in these difficult times. Even if it means shouting at her friend/senior Richard Webber to learn the new protocols before practising any medicine in the hospital. She is always on her toes, trying to micromanage everything and everyone in the hospital. As the hospital is falling short of masks, the nurses are reusing the old ones by using extra strings, while some doctors are lending them their N95 masks. It's a team effort, even though nothing seems to be looking good right now, they are trying to support and help each other out in whichever way possible.</p>

<p>While the premiere&nbsp;largely focuses on the COVID-19 pandemic, we also get an update on each of the character's&nbsp;parallel storylines. First, let's talk about the elephant in the room. Shonda Rhimes did indeed give the '<strong>Grey's Anatomy</strong>' fans an early Christmas gift, one which was least expected by anyone. But isn't that what 'Grey's Anatomy' is known for? Dereck Shepherd aka 'McDreamy' makes a surprise entry into the subconscious mind of Meredith when she collapses in the parking lot. (Dereck&nbsp;had died in season 11 in a car accident) It is said that he will make more such 'surprise' appearances in the rest of the season.</p>

<p>Maggie Pierce&nbsp;is finally in a mature and 'no drama' relationship with a doctor she met at a medical conference last season and even though they have a long-distance relationship, she seems really happy and content. We get to see a new spark or at least starting off one between Jo Wilson and Jackson Avery, although we don't know for sure if it ends up being anything solid. Teddy and&nbsp;Owen Hunt's relationship seems to be broken, at least from Owen's side, while Teddy is still trying to make amends for her brief sexual encounter with Koraisk one day before their marriage. On the other hand, Richard Webber and&nbsp;Catherine Avery are still trying to figure out their complicated marriage after all the drama we saw in the previous season.</p>

<p><strong>Grey's&nbsp;Anatomy</strong> doesn't disappoint at all, especially when it tells its viewers that they will be blown away by the premiere of season 17.</p>

<p>To sum it up, it was heartwarming yet realistic at the same time.</p>

'Grey's Anatomy' Season 17 review: It displays courage and goodwill of the medical community during the COVID pandemic

<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Monday that the central government will bear the expenses of vaccinating nearly three crore healthcare and frontline workers in the first round and suggested that public representatives, a reference to politicians, should not be part of this initial exercise.</p>

<p>Interacting with chief ministers, PM Modi underscored the enormity of what he described as the world's biggest vaccination exercise, which begins from January 16, saying over 30 crore citizens will get the jabs in the next few months in India against only 2.5 crore people who have received them in over 50 countries in around a month so far.</p>

<p>The Lok Sabha on Monday passed a legislation that provides for up to seven years in jail for those attacking healthcare workers fighting the coronavirus or during any situation akin to the current pandemic.</p>

<p>The Epidemic Diseases (Amendment) Bill, 2020, will replace an ordinance issued in April by the government. The Rajya Sabha has already passed the bill on Saturday.</p>

<p>With the Lok Sabha giving its nod, it will soon become an act, which is going to amend 123-year-old legislation.</p>

<p>The government had brought the ordinance on April 22 to amend the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897, to make incidents of violence on health workers treating COVID-19 patients a non-bailable offence, with provisions of a penalty and a jail term of up to seven years.</p>

<p>The bill intends to ensure that during any situation akin to the current pandemic, there is zero-tolerance to any form of violence against healthcare personnel and damage to property.</p>

<p>Under the proposed act, the commission or abetment of such violence will be punishable with imprisonment for a term of three months to five years and with a fine of Rs 50,000 to Rs 2,00,000.</p>

<p>In case of causing grievous hurt, the imprisonment shall be for a term of six months to seven years and with a fine of Rs 1-5 lakh.</p>

<p>Replying to a debate on the bill in the lower House, Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said this was a empowering legislation and states could make additions to the act.</p>

<p>The ordinance has given a very strong message to perpetrators of violence against medical professionals and health workers during the pandemic, Vardhan said.</p>

<p>"We have all noticed that there has been a dramatic decline in the incidents of violence against health workers all over the country," he said.</p>

<p>Vardhan explained that the ordinance had to be brought as incidents of harassment and violence against health workers were rising amid a lack of awareness about coronavirus.</p>

<p>"Everyone was feeling sad and bad. That was the time the government thought of taking a proactive step. When the government reviewed, it found there were minimal laws and powers in some states. There was a need to have a central law to put in place a prohibitory mechanism to stop such activities," Vardhan said.</p>

<p>With regard to certain objections raised by members from opposition parties regarding some legal flaws in the bill, he said the bill had been drafted after taking legal opinion.</p>

<p>Adhir Chowdhury of the Congress said it seemed that the government had brought the Bill in haste as certain provisions were an area of concern.</p>

<p>As the saying goes, "haste makes waste", he said, adding: "I would request the government to send the bill to the standing committee and a comprehensive legislation should be brought in."</p>

<p>Under the bill, there is a provision that says the offender would be presumed to be guilty of the offence unless proved otherwise by the accused defender, Chowdhury said, adding that this was in complete deviation from the principles of the country's criminal law.</p>

<p>Bhartruhari Mahtab of the BJD and Kalyan Banerjee of the TMC also raised legal lacuna in the bill and wanted the government to consider changes.</p>

<p>The health minister said "our government from the last 3-4 years is working on a National Public Health Act to comprehensively deal with issues related to biological emergencies".</p>

<p>Subhash Bhamre of the BJP said healthcare workers should be allowed to work in an environment free of abuse. He said 68,000 healthcare workers had tested positive for coronavirus so far and 500 doctors had lost their lives due to the infection.</p>

<p>Bhamre said when doctors were working round the clock, donning PPEs, which makes it difficult to work, and without caring for their lives, the healthcare workers should get the respect they deserve.</p>

<p>T Sumathy Thangapandian of the DMK said the bill talked about violence against healthcare personnel during the pandemic, asking what would be the case after the pandemic ended.</p>
