Russia on Monday (Apr 15) raised concerns over the escalation of tensions in the Middle East after Iran launched an unprecedented attack against Israel on Saturday (Apr 13).

"We express our extreme concern at yet another dangerous escalation in the region. We have repeatedly warned that the numerous unresolved crises in the Middle East, primarily in the area of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, which are often fuelled by irresponsible provocative actions, will exacerbate tensions," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

"We call on all parties involved in the conflict to exercise restraint. We believe it is important for the constructively-minded international players to contribute to this effort," the statement added.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov calling for restraint said that further rise in the conflict was in no one's interest and that the countries should resolve conflict via political and diplomatic methods.

"Further escalation is in no one's interests. Therefore, of course, we advocate that all disagreements be resolved exclusively by political and diplomatic methods," Peskov said.

Iran on Saturday (Apr 13) launched a drone and missile strike against Israel in retaliation for an Israeli attack on its Damascus consulate on April 1 that claimed the lives of seven officers, including a senior commander of the IRGC.

UK rebuffs Iran claim that it gave advance notice before attacking Israel

The United Kingdom rebuffed Iran's claims that Tehran notified in advance before launching missile and drone attacks against Israel.

"I would reject that characterisation," a spokesman for British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on Monday (Apr 15). "And more broadly, we condemn in the strongest possible terms their direct attack against Israel."

Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian on Sunday said that Tehran had informed its neighbouring countries about its retaliatory strikes on Israel almost 72 hours in advance.

“About 72 hours prior to our operations, we informed our friends and neighbours in the region that Iran’s response against Israel was certain, legitimate, and irrevocable,” Amirabdollahian said at a press briefing.

Meanwhile, British Foreign Secretary David Cameron urged Israel not to launch any retaliatory offensive against Iran stating that Tel Aviv should "think with head as well as heart" as Tehran's strike was a near-total failure.

Iran on Saturday night had launched over 300 missiles and drones that reportedly caused moderate damage in Israel as most of them were shot down by its Iron Dome defence system and with help from the US, Britain, France and Jordan.

"I think they're perfectly justified to think they should respond because they have been attacked, but we are urging them as friends to think with the head as well as heart, to be smart as well as tough," Cameron said.

He said that he was urging Israel not to escalate the conflict in the Middle East.

"In many ways, this has been a double defeat for Iran. The attack was an almost total failure, and they revealed to the world that they were the malign influence in the region prepared to do this. So our hope is that there won't be a retaliatory response," he added.

Macron urges Israel to avoid escalation

French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday said that he has urged Israel to avoid further escalation in the Middle East.

"We will do all we can to avoid things flaring up, escalating," Macron said, urging Israel to aim to isolate Iran rather than escalate the situation.

"We are all worried about a possible escalation," Macron told BFM TV and RMC radio. "The situation is very unstable today."

French President Emmanuel Macron has said the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics would be moved if there is a serious risk of a terrorist attack, adding that backup plans were in place to deal with any such contingency.

French President Emmanuel Macron has said the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics would be moved if there is a serious risk of a terrorist attack, adding that backup plans were in place to deal with any such contingency. In less than four months, Paris will be hosting the biggest sporting carnival on the planet with the opening ceremony taking place on the iconic Seine river. However, a recent upsurge in threats from terrorists has soured the anticipation surrounding the quadrennial event. “If we think there are risks, depending on our analysis of the context, we have fallback scenarios. There are plans B and C and we are preparing them in parallel," said Macron in a television interview on Monday (Apr 15). Notably, the organisers have planned a 'world first' opening ceremony, scheduled for July 26, when over 300,000 people are expected to watch an armada of boats carrying national teams down the river. “We’ll be analysing the situation in real-time and preparing a ceremony that would be limited to Trocadéro, where we wouldn’t use the whole of the Seine, or even a ceremony that would bring the public to the Stade de France, which is what has been done traditionally,” Macron said. “What the terrorists want is to prevent us from dreaming, and that’s their greatest victory," he added. French President Emmanuel Macron receives backlash from leaders in Africa for saying that France and global community could have stopped the 1994 Rwanda genocide but lacked the will to do so. His comments came as the East African country marked 30 years since the massacre that claimed over 800,000 people, mostly from the minority tutsi ethnic group.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) in France, on Tuesday (Apr 9) delivered a landmark ruling and found Switzerland’s failure to adequately tackle the climate crisis a violation of human rights in a case brought by more than 2,000 women.

About the hearing

The court ruled in favour of a group of elderly women from Switzerland who argued that the Swiss government’s inadequate efforts to combat climate change put them at risk of dying during heatwaves.

The women, most of whom are in their 70s, argued that their age and gender made them particularly vulnerable to the effects of heatwaves which have become more frequent and are intensifying in recent years due to climate change.

The court in the French city of Strasbourg heard the case against Switzerland’s government which had been accused of not only undermining the health and quality of life of the women but also putting them at risk of dying.

Court President Siofra O’Leary said the Swiss government had violated the human right to a private and family life as it failed to formulate and implement domestic policies to tackle climate change.

“This included a failure to quantify, through a carbon budget or otherwise, national greenhouse gas emissions limitations,” O’Leary told the courtroom.

She also noted that the Swiss government had failed to meet its past greenhouse gas emission reduction targets. The ECtHR also found “critical gaps” in Switzerland’s policies to tackle climate change.

The judgement marks the first time that the court has ruled on climate litigation. Notably, the court does not allow a right to appeal and their judgement is legally binding.

‘We still can’t really believe it’

“We still can’t really believe it. We keep asking our lawyers, ‘is that right?’,” said Rosemarie Wydler-Walti, one of the leaders of the Swiss women, KlimaSeniorinnen or Senior Women for Climate Protection, as quoted by the news agency Reuters.

Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg also joined the campaigners in celebrating at the court.

The judgement in the case heard by a 17-judge panel at the ECtHR also comes as dozens of courts across the world are hearing climate lawsuits brought by communities against governments which hinge on human rights.

“Regardless of the legal arguments, what these cases do is they remind us of the high importance and urgency which our citizens attach to climate action,” said the European Commission spokesperson after the ruling.

Court dismisses two other cases

The court dismissed two other cases brought by six Portuguese young people and a former French mayor, both of which largely argued that European governments had failed to tackle climate change quickly enough and that it violated their rights.

The six Portuguese youths filed a lawsuit against 32 European governments, but had been dismissed by the court saying that the two claims were ruled “inadmissible.”

“It is a betrayal beyond words, and today’s rulings make very clear that the European states have a legal responsibility to take real time action and to protect people, to protect its citizens,” said Thunberg.

France's Atomic Energy Commission has recently unveiled the world's most powerful MRI scanner. Developed by a team of researchers, this scanner promises precision in probing the human brain and its various afflictions.

Situated in the vicinity of Paris, this scanner has already welcomed approximately 20 healthy volunteers for imaging studies. What sets this scanner apart is its impressive 11.7 tesla magnetic field, surpassing traditional hospital MRI machines by a significant margin.

Alexandre Vignaud, a physicist involved in the project, expressed astonishment at the unmatched level of clarity captured by the scanner, which has been named Iseult.

Encased within a five-metre cylinder, the scanner houses a 132-tonne magnet powered by a 1,500-amp coil, putting on display the culmination of two decades of collaboration between French and German engineers. It features a three-foot opening for subjects, facilitating ease of access while maintaining optimal imaging conditions.

French lawmakers in the lower house of the country’s parliament, on Thursday (Mar 28) voted in favour of legislation which would outlaw discrimination based on hairstyle, colour or texture, in what is being hailed as a historic move by the supporters of the bill that would make this type of workplace discrimination punishable.

What is the bill about?

The bill has sought to expand existing measures and explicitly outlaw discrimination over the texture, length, colour or style of a person’s hair – particularly those with curly, coiled or no hair at all.

The bill, drafted by Olivier Serva, a Black lawmaker from the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, said that many people have suffered due to discrimination based on their hair.

“There is a lot of suffering (based on hair discrimination) and we need to take this into account,” he told Reuters.

The independent deputy for Guadeloupe cited a 2023 study by Dove and LinkedIn which showed that two out of three Black women in the United States changed their hair for a job interview.

The study also found that a Black woman’s hair was 2.5 times more likely to be perceived as unprofessional.

The bill was passed in the French parliament with a 44-2 majority since most of the lawmakers did not vote on it. However, it must still pass the French Senate where it might face opposition.

What are the arguments?

“It’s about time,” said Estelle Vallois, 43, who works as a consultant getting her short, coiled hair cut in a Paris salon told the Associated Press. She added, “Today, we’re going even further toward taking down these barriers of discrimination.”

However, people who have opposed the bill have called the bill unnecessary and an import of ideas from the United States.

“Should we tomorrow expect a bill on discrimination against bald people, which I think are underrepresented in shampoo ads?” said Fabien Di Filipo of the conservative Les Republicains mocking the bill.

Similarly, far-right National Rally lawmaker Philippe Schreck told the parliament that he said that we should work on what he called more important issues, such as the country’s public debt.

At least 23 out of the 50 US states have passed legislation aimed at protecting people from hair discrimination in the workplace and public schools.

Also Read | France hijab row: School head quits over death threats, govt to prosecute teen for false accusations The independent deputy for Guadeloupe cited a 2023 study by Dove and LinkedIn which showed that two out of three Black women in the United States changed their hair for a job interview. She added, “Today, we’re going even further toward taking down these barriers of discrimination.” However, people who have opposed the bill have called the bill unnecessary and an import of ideas from the United States. Also Read | Macron and Lula’s photos during Amazon visit sparks social media frenzy “Should we tomorrow expect a bill on discrimination against bald people, which I think are underrepresented in shampoo ads?” said Fabien Di Filipo of the conservative Les Republicains mocking the bill. (With inputs from agencies)

French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said the state will sue a teenage girl who falsely accused her headteacher of using violence during a heated argument over wearing an Islamic head covering. The teacher has now quit following death threats on social media.

The headteacher had asked the girl to remove the head covering inside the school premises, as per French law.

After the killing of two teachers in the past years, any kind of Islamist threats sent to French schools is considered extremely serious in the country.

In 2020, Samuel Paty was decapitated in Paris and five months ago, Dominique Bernard was murdered inside his school.

The headteacher, whose identity has not been revealed to the public, sent a resignation email to his colleagues at the Maurice Ravel Lycee in Paris on Friday (Mar 22).

"I have finally taken the decision to quit my functions," the teacher said, adding, "out of concern for my own safety and that of the establishment."

The teacher also thanked his colleagues for extending their support to him in the past three weeks.

The two students followed the rule, but the third one did not obey, which led to an altercation.

In subsequent days, the head teacher received death threats on social media platforms, which were sent by the school to an interior ministry hotline.

As per prosecutors, two people were detained after the death threats were investigated.

The identities of the detainees were not revealed, but the education ministry said they had no connection with the school.

Police officials also patrolled around the school premises and Education Minister Nicole Belloubet also paid a visit.

No evidence was found by the officers which proved that the girl was hit by the headteacher and Prime Minister Gabriel Attal also stepped into the issue and said that she would be sued for making false allegations.

Alexander Bortnikov, director of the Federal Security Service (FSB), said they believe that the terrorist attack was “prepared by both the Islamist radicals themselves and was facilitated by Western special services.”

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin on Monday (Mar 25) announced multiple new anti-drug raids across the country, terming them as "XXL cleanup operations".

Darmanin said that police units conducted raids and also arrested several people in various cities such as Lille, Villeneuve-d'Ascq and Roubaix.

He stated that in the coming days, the authorities were "going to multiply the operations that we have prepared for months to hit very hard."

The French minister took to his official X handle and wrote that the operations would proceed with the inspections and searches of residential buildings. He then stated that the operation's initial raid took place in Marseille last week.

The efforts are a part of the government's broader crackdown on drug trafficking across France ahead of elections for the European Parliament that are scheduled from June 6 to June 9.

During his recent visit to the southern port city of Marseille, which is often linked to the drug trafficking menace, French President Emmanuel Macron vowed that 10 such operations would be executed in the coming weeks.

He launched a major operation against the narcotics trade in Marseille and other French cities, stating that the gangland battles that had claimed the lives of many in the past had made it miserable for the people residing in those particular areas.

"In Marseille and other cities in France, we have launched an unprecedented operation to put a stop to drug trafficking and ensure republican order," Macron wrote in a post on X.

He asserted that the operations would ensure an "XXL" cleanup.

Approximately 900 police and customs officers were deployed in Marseille and the Bouches-du-Rhone region on the first day of the operation, news agency AFP reported citing local authorities.

In the first three days of the operation, nearly 22 kilogrammes of drugs, over 385,000 euros ($417,000) and four weapons were seized and 71 people were placed in custody.

France's terror alert system

As per a Reuters report, France's terror alert system comprises three levels, with the highest level being activated following an attack in France or abroad, or when there is a perceived imminent threat of an attack.

This level allows for heightened security measures, including increased patrols by armed forces in public places such as train stations, airports, and religious sites.

Moscow concert hall attack

On Friday, just before Soviet-era rock group Picnic was to perform its hit "Afraid of Nothing" four armed men burst into Crocus City Hall, a 6,200-seat concert hall outside Moscow. Unleashing a barrage of gunfire with their automatic weapons in short bursts, the attackers killed 137 people, including three children, while another 182 were injured.

This attack was the deadliest attack inside Russia for two decades. Previously, in 2004, a siege at Beslan school had claimed 300 lives — more than half of them children.

Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the deadly attack. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin has sought to blame Ukraine for the incident.

As per a Reuters report, Russia has charged four suspects — Dalerdzhon Mirzoyev, Saidakrami Rachabalizoda, Shamsidin Fariduni, and Muhammadsobir Fayzov — over the attack.

The men, identified by the Russian media as citizens of the ex-Soviet republic of Tajikistan living in the country, would be remanded in pre-trial custody until May 22.

Florian Wirtz scored Germany's fastest international goal after seven seconds as the Euro 2024 hosts earned a confidence-boosting 2-0 friendly victory over France on Saturday (Mar 23) to bag their first win in their last four games.

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann was desperate for a good start to the year ahead of the tournament on home soil in June and that is exactly what he got.

Wirtz surprised the French with his long-range effort for his first international goal after a well-practised move and pass from Toni Kroos, back from a three-year international retirement.

The goal was a few hundredths of a second faster than the previous German best, Lukas Podolski's seventh-second goal against Ecuador in 2013.

The hosts gradually took control and Kylian Mbappe forced a fine save from Germany's Marc Andre ter Stegen to protect their lead in the 26th minute.

"We had a very good start and the kickoff was planned exactly that way," Germany's Nagelsmann said.

"It was important to protect the lead and after the break, we improved further and carved out more chances. I am very satisfied with the way we fought. It is what we wish, to give it all every time.

"We got a confidence boost from this game. We are on a good path and played a very good game today."

France pushed for an equaliser with Ousmane Dembele and Adrien Rabiot but it was the Germans, under pressure to improve after only two wins in their last 10 matches before Saturday, who scored again.

They doubled their lead early in the second half with Wirtz picking out Jamal Musiala with a cross and he cut back for Kai Havertz to finish the move.

France ran out of ideas in the second half and had to wait until late in the game for substitute Olivier Giroud to miss two chances before Germany defender Antonio Ruediger hit his own post as he tried to clear a ball.

"We weren't there, that's obvious," said France coach Didier Deschamps after his 150th game in charge.

"The Germans played a high-level match today. When we see our start to the match, with this goal, we are standing still.

"The Germans did things better than us. In terms of commitment and aggression, we were below. The first person to blame is me," he added.
