The head of global players' union FIFPro has given his backing to footballers who do no want to return to training because of coronavirus fears and cautioned that it would be "inhumane and unacceptable" if they were to be punished for taking such a stance.

Jonas Baer-Hoffmann's comments come after Troy Deeney of English Premier League side Watford refused to restart training ahead of a possible resumption of the season because he does not want to put his young child, who has breathing difficulties, at risk of catching the virus.

Deeney has also cited fears his family could be in danger because of figures that show black and ethnic minorities in the UK -- which has the highest recorded death toll in Europe -- are more likely to become seriously ill with COVID-19.

Deeney is "a player who has very legitimate concerns and wants to protect his family", Baer-Hoffmann said in a conference call with reporters on Wednesday.

"If these players are being pressured or potentially facing disciplinary actions, we feel that is very much unacceptable.

"The idea that somebody may be punished in a pandemic for trying to protect his family's health is inhumane and unacceptable."

However, there is no suggestion that Watford are planning to take disciplinary action against Deeney.

Several players in England have voiced concerns about returning to training, even in small groups.

Watford were among the Premier League clubs affected by six positive tests for the virus out of a total of 748 tests conducted on Sunday and Monday.

England defender Danny Rose, on loan at Newcastle United from Tottenham Hotspur, said players were being treated like "lab rats" as the league attempts to get going again.

"No system can actually exclude the risk of infection, so it is a question about the probability by which you minimise that risk and many of the systems that we are seeing and reading about -- not particularly England -- still leave many, many gaps and many risks," Baer-Hoffmann said.

"If the players in England -- of which Danny Rose is a part -- would like stricter rules then that needs to be discussed."

Baer-Hoffmann admitted that plenty of players around the world were keen to get back playing despite the potential risks involved, but said FIFPro recommended that players undertake three to four weeks of training before beginning matches again due to the risk of injuries.

In England the Premier League has been suspended since March 13.

The financial consequences of not restarting would be potentially very serious for clubs, although players at the top level in England are in a better position than some of their counterparts around the globe.

Baer-Hoffmann highlighted the case of players in several Latin American countries, including Colombia and Uruguay, as well as in Botswana and Egypt, who are now relying on food packages from their local players' union "because they cannot even provide for their own basic needs and are being stranded in terms of income".

'Inhumane' - FIFPro chief warns against punishing players who refuse to train over virus fears

Watford defender Adrian Mariappa said news that he had tested positive for coronavirus came as a "big surprise" as he has felt no ill effects.

The 33-year-old was one of three positive tests at Watford with the other two among staff members.

The Hornets accounted for half the six COVID-19 cases detected from 748 tests of Premier League players and staff ahead of a return to training in small groups this week.

"Ever since I got my positive result back on Tuesday, I’ve been scratching my head to try to work out how I might have got coronavirus," Mariappa told The Telegraph.

"It was a big surprise because I haven’t really left the house, apart from some exercise and the odd walk with the kids. I’ve mainly just been homeschooling and keeping fit."

Mariappa had been following a fitness programme prepared by the club without any trouble caused by the virus to his breathing.

"I’ve not had any symptoms and I’ve felt as fit as ever, probably fitter because I’ve been working really hard.

"I’ve been following my training programme and I’ve not felt out of breath or ill, or anything.

"We’ve been fully monitored the whole time and the club have been able to track our distances and things. I’ve been really excelling in all of that and feeling great."

Burnley confirmed their assistant manager Ian Woan is also asymptomatic having tested positive for the virus.

Watford captain Troy Deeney has said he will not return to training this week for fear that he could contract COVID-19 and pass it onto his five-month-old son.

Other Watford players are reportedly set to follow Deeney's example, but Mariappa did not rule out returning to training once he was gone through a period of seven days self-isolation.

"I will just follow the protocols and each of the steps, and decide what is right for me each time," he added.

"My focus now is just on isolating for seven days and hopefully testing negative next time."

Watford's Mariappa stunned by coronavirus diagnosis

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin says he is having sleepless nights due to the COVID-19 pandemic with European soccer’s governing body set to lose “millions and millions” of dollars after the season came to a halt.

European leagues and UEFA competitions have either been suspended since March or had their seasons cut short due to the novel coronavirus outbreak.

While the German Bundesliga resumed over the weekend, it is unclear when, or if, other major top flight leagues will restart, with the season set to spill over into August when the 2020-21 campaign is set to kick off.

"There is so much information (to take in) and so many calendar issues. So many millions and millions, dozens of millions of dollars, that we will lose," Ceferin told the Guardian&nbsp;here

“It’s then hard to fall asleep at night. You would be quite irresponsible if you could fall asleep immediately.

“The situation for UEFA is not that alarming, we’re not in a dangerous situation, but we still care about the clubs and the leagues and the stakeholders so it is a lot of work.”

Ceferin said he did not expect football to change once the situation returns to normal but added that Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations could be adapted to the “new times”.

“If they don’t follow the rules they will always be sanctioned, but of course we’re thinking about how we can improve our regulations,” he said.

“This will not happen very soon but we’re thinking of improving (FFP), modernising it and doing something more about the competitive balance. We’re also considering some sort of ‘luxury tax’, if it’s possible.”

UEFA's Ceferin losing sleep over COVID-19 cost

A top South Korean football club accused of using sex dolls to fill empty seats in its stands will face disciplinary proceedings this week, K-league officials said.

With fans banned from matches because of the coronavirus, FC Seoul came under fire for deploying dozens of silicone spectators wearing T-shirts or holding placards with the logo of a sex-toy seller.

The K-league said its disciplinary committee will review whether the use of the mannequins violated the league's rules on promoting obscene materials.

Officials will also discuss whether the incident damaged the league's image and integrity.

Violating those rules can result in five league points being deducted, or a fine of more than five million won (US$4,066).

FC Seoul -- who beat Gwangju FC 1-0 in the match -- apologised earlier this week for causing "deep concern" to fans, but has insisted the mannequins had no connection to sex toys.

Reports say the mannequin distributor approached the K-league offering to provide its products to fill empty stands for free, and was introduced to FC Seoul.

The club is considering legal action against the mannequin provider, according to Korean news reports, but regardless of the motive the stunt has made headlines around the world.

The K-league's new season kicked off behind closed doors on May 8 after being postponed for more than two months because of the coronavirus pandemic.

South Korean football league to investigate 'sex doll' row

La Liga's proposed restart next month has left fans juggling the excitement of football's return and the disappointment it will resume without them.&nbsp;

More than two months after the coronavirus pandemic halted the season in Spain, players have begun training in small groups as they aim to be as ready as possible for the planned reboot on June 12.&nbsp;

Yet goals, saves and tackles will all be greeted by silence or at best, artificial cheers approved by authorities to be pumped out of a sound system.&nbsp;

Even for Sevilla against Real Betis, the usually-heart thumping Andalusian derby that encapsulates the importance of supporters more than any other Spanish fixture, the atmosphere will be non-existent on the first weekend back.

But for clubs, there is a financial necessity given La Liga president Javier Tebas has estimated cancelling the season could cost them 1 billion euros ($1.08 billion).&nbsp;

"People need their dose of football," Adolfo Barbero, a commentator on Movistar, Spain's primary football broadcaster, told AFP.&nbsp;

"There is that want for fans to go to matches but for many now, the priority is to play. They want to see 22 guys, a ball and a green pitch, the rest will be for afterwards."&nbsp;

For fans, there is an acceptance that the sport returning in muted form is better than it not coming back at all.&nbsp;

"We understand that football without fans is not the football we want," says Jose Manuel Mateo, president of Aficiones Unidas, an association of fans from different clubs.&nbsp;

"But given the exceptional nature of the situation, we have no choice but to accept it."&nbsp;

"I don't think football can afford just to wait or stand still until there is a vaccine, which guarantees safety," Mateo added.&nbsp;

According to La Liga, playing without fans is not without cost too as clubs surrender considerable sums in matchday revenue.&nbsp;

But finishing the remaining 11 rounds of the season and completing European competitions would limit losses to around 303 million euros, a third of the figure contemplated for cancellation.&nbsp;

<h2>- 'Without fans it's not football' -</h2>

Resumption allows players to return to work and staff too, many of whom have had their wages cut in recent weeks.&nbsp;

"Many families also depend on football for income, it's not only the players," Mateo said.&nbsp;

Playing the last eleven days of the league "behind closed doors is a way to save the season," admits Gerardo Tocino, president of the Real Madrid fans' club, La Gran Familia.&nbsp;

"Those of us who really feel the colours of a club, what we seek is the best for the team, even if that means seeing your players through a screen."

But for others, sacrificing supporters was a solution found too easily and the worry is that over the coming weeks and months, the game will find ways to adapt.&nbsp;

Instead of being missed, fans could feel less needed than ever.&nbsp;

"Without fans in the stands it's not football, it's reality TV or televised training, but not football," says Emilio Abejon, secretary general of the Federation of Spanish Soccer Shareholders and Partners (FASFE).&nbsp;

"The country is allowing tourism to stop, which is the biggest business in Spain, but not football."&nbsp;

Abejon, a fan of Atletico Madrid, points out that a significant part of the 1.3 per cent contribution football makes to Spain's GDP is "the business around football like bars, restaurants, shops", all of which will remain closed.&nbsp;

"If football cannot return under reasonable conditions, which we believe to be with people in the stands, it should not return at all," said Abejon.&nbsp;

Joseba Combarro, president of the Eskozia La Brava, the most important supporters' club in Eibar, says the only option should have been cancellation.&nbsp;

"We understand we cannot go to the stadium due to the risk of infection," said Combarro. "But the players share the same risk as the fans, the risk is for everyone. The league should be suspended."&nbsp;

Fans torn as Spanish football prepares to begin recovery without them

Kai Havertz scored twice as Bayer Leverkusen ended the first round of Bundesliga matches in over two months with a 4-1 win at Werder Bremen on Monday which moved them within a point of the top four.

The visitors went into the game only four points behind fourth-placed RB Leipzig after their fellow Champions League hopefuls' 1-1 draw with Freiburg on Saturday, when the Bundesliga became the first major league to resume during the coronavirus pandemic.

Attacking midfielder Havertz, reportedly a transfer target for some of Europe's biggest clubs including Liverpool and Barcelona, was the star of the show at an empty Weserstadion.

He has scored 12 goals in all competitions this season, having netted 20 times last term.

It was Leverkusen's 10th win in 11 games, but their first since winning 3-1 at Rangers in the Europa League last-16 first leg on March 12.

After a slow start to the game in an eery atmosphere similar to the weekend's matches, with all games being played behind closed doors, the encounter burst into life with three goals in five minutes.

The 20-year-old Havertz nodded Leverkusen into a 28th-minute lead, before Bremen right-back Theodor Gebre Selassie levelled on the half-hour mark.

But Havertz restored Leverkusen's advantage three minutes later with another header, from Kerem Demirbay's free-kick.

Peter Bosz's side wrapped up a comfortable victory with second-half goals from Mitchell Weiser and Demirbay.

The heavy defeat leaves Bremen stuck in the drop zone, five points adrift off the relegation play-off spot and nine from safety, albeit with a game in hand.

Bremen have spent only one season, the 1980-81 campaign, outside the top flight since the formation of the Bundesliga in 1963.

Havertz stars as Leverkusen thump Bremen

Germany's Bundesliga became the first top European league to restart at the weekend with leaders Bayern Munich staying four points clear following a 2-0 win at Union Berlin behind closed doors.

After a two-month hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic, draconian hygiene measures were enforced at all nine matches.

The players are being regularly tested for the virus and substitutes wore face masks while sitting spaced out on the benches.

The games took place without fans with the players' voices audible inside the empty grounds.

There were modified celebrations to avoid contact, with goals being marked by elbow bumps and solo dancing. &nbsp;

AFP Sport looks at what we learned from the restart:

<h2>Easier to referee</h2>

With fans absent, the lack of background noise in stadiums meant the referees found it easier to control matches.

"Players don't immediately rush towards the referee in the event of a controversial decision, they don't form into packs," said Guido Winkmann, who refereed Cologne's 2-2 draw with Mainz on Sunday.

"Probably because there are no fans, there are less emotions involved."

Lutz Froehlich, head of the Bundesliga's referees, said he felt there was "greater acceptance when the referees made their decisions".

The 62-year-old said players tended to focus more "on their tasks in the game" rather than remonstrating with match officials.

&nbsp;

<h2>No home advantage</h2>

Without passionate supporters driving on the home team, only one of the weekend's nine matches was won by the hosts when Dortmund smashed Schalke 4-0 in the Ruhr derby.

"There is no longer any home advantage," said Julian Nagelsmann after his RB Leipzig team were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Freiburg on Saturday.

"Of course, as a host you are used to the stadium etc, but if the fans are not there, the home advantage is gone."

<h2>Ball in play more</h2>

Curiously, the ball was in play more -- an average of 59:00 minutes compared to the season figure of 57:05, according to sports data company Deltatre.

It was in play the most in the goalless basement battle when Fortuna Duesseldorf were held at home by bottom side Paderborn, with 62:28 minutes of action.

The lowest figure recorded was in Cologne's 2-2 draw at Mainz, with the ball in play for just 52:23 minutes.

<h2>Fewer goals, lots of running</h2>

Statistically, there were slightly fewer shots -- 24.3 compared to 26.8 -- and goals, with 27 in nine games for an average of exactly three, down from 3.25 before the pandemic.

However, the players worked just as hard as before the enforced break.

There were just as many sprints, 220.1 per club compared to 220.3, and teams covered slightly more ground at 116.4 kilometres (72.32 mi), compared to 116.2.

Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich ran the furthest, managing 12.93km in Berlin.

<h2>Keep your (social) distance</h2>

The successful return weekend did not pass completely without a hitch, however, as in the heat of the moment some players forgot to avoid contact, especially when goals were scored.

Dortmund striker Erling Braut Haaland scored the first Bundesliga goal for two months, before dancing awkwardly alone, clapped on by team-mates.

However, not everyone could resist keeping their hands off team-mates during games, in breach of league protocol.

Hertha Berlin defender Dedryck Boyata apologised for grabbing the face of team-mate Marko Grujic to whisper instructions during their 3-0 win at Hoffenheim.

"We must definitely be careful now that we play under this situation," said Boyata.

"We have to adapt our way to play or celebrate."

On Monday, Robert Klein, the CEO of the international arm of the Bundesliga, said the clubs must remind players of the "guideline to celebrate within the social distancing norms".

Fewer goals, lots of running Statistically, there were slightly fewer shots -- 24.3 compared to 26.8 -- and goals, with 27 in nine games for an average of exactly three, down from 3.25 before the pandemic. Keep your (social) distance The successful return weekend did not pass completely without a hitch, however, as in the heat of the moment some players forgot to avoid contact, especially when goals were scored. "We have to adapt our way to play or celebrate." On Monday, Robert Klein, the CEO of the international arm of the Bundesliga, said the clubs must remind players of the "guideline to celebrate within the social distancing norms".

Five things we learned from the Bundesliga restart

Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan will stage a new competition called the 'European Solidarity Cup' in 2021 to raise money for medical facilities in Italy and Spain.&nbsp;

The three clubs will play each other in a round-robin group, with Inter against Bayern held in Milan, Real facing Inter in Madrid and Bayern hosting Real in Munich.&nbsp;

Proceeds from the fixtures will be donated to medical facilities in Italy and Spain, two of the world's worst-hit countries by the coronavirus pandemic.&nbsp;

The aim is "to send out a message of solidarity and fraternity to the people of Europe", said a statement from Real Madrid.&nbsp;

Dates for the tournament have not been decided. The timing will "depend on the match calendar and when football can be played in front of fans again", the clubs said.&nbsp;

Bayern will invite 5,000 nurses, carers and doctors to the Allianz Arena for their match against Real Madrid.&nbsp;

"Nurses, carers and doctors in particular are doing an outstanding job for society at the moment," said Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. "We, the three clubs, want to show these heroes our appreciation, respect and gratitude."&nbsp;

"The great commitment of all healthcare workers has been essential to allow us to look to the future," said Inter president Steven Zhang.&nbsp;

Cristiano Ronaldo back training at Juventus after two months

Watford captain Troy Deeney will not return to training this week over fears he could pass coronavirus on to his five-month-old son.

Deeney has consistently voiced his concerns over the speed with which the Premier League hopes to return to playing matches despite the United Kingdom having the second-highest death toll in the world.

England's top-flight clubs are due to return to training in small, socially distanced groups on Tuesday.

Training will then be stepped up to full contact with the aim of resuming the season by the middle of next month.

"We're due back in this week. I've said I'm not going in. It's nothing to do with financial gain," Deeney said on the Talk The Talk&nbsp;podcast.

"My son is five months and he's had breathing difficulties. I don't want to come home and put him in more danger."

All players and staff will be regularly tested, but Deeney highlighted the contradiction of contact sport returning at a time when the public are told to continue following social distancing guidelines.

The 31-year-old also added he is willing to take a financial hit if not playing results in a reduction in wages.

"While we are being tested and while we are going to be in a very safe environment, it only takes one person in the group. I don't want to be bringing that home," he added.

"I just said the simplest thing. I can't get a haircut until mid-July, but I can go and get in a box with 19 people and jump for a header.

"I don't know how that works. No one could answer the questions, not because they didn't want to, but because they don't know the information.

"I've lost my dad, my gran, my grandad.  I've lost more or less everyone that I care about. So that, to me, is more important than a few quid in my back pocket."

Deeney also raised the concerns of black, Asian and ethnic minority players over studies that they are more at risk from the virus.

Black men and women are nearly twice as likely to die from COVID-19 as white people in England and Wales, according to the Office for National Statistics.

"Within the meeting I asked very simple questions. For black, Asian and mixed ethnicities they are four times more likely to get the illness and we're twice as likely to have long-lasting illnesses," Deeney said.

"Is there any additional screening? Heart stuff to see if people have got problems? No. Okay, well I feel like that should be addressed."

However, Newcastle manager Steve Bruce praised the attention to detail in the Premier League's protocols and said the vast majority of his players are in favour of a return to training.

"They have done everything they possibly can to make sure everyone is safe," Bruce told the BBC. "The attention to detail is fantastic. I think everything has been put in place.

"They have been meticulous in their planning. The vast majority of our squad are satisfied.

"Let's get up and going and see where it takes us. I think all of us want to get it started and finished."

No Serie A restart before June 14, says FIGC

Thomas Mueller joked that the Bundesliga without fans feels like "old man's football, 7pm, under floodlights" after Bayern Munich brushed aside Union Berlin 2-0 behind closed doors on Sunday.

A first-half Robert Lewandowski penalty and a late Benjamin Pavard header sealed Bayern's win in front of empty terraces in Berlin.

The result leaves defending champions Bayern four points clear as the German league restarted this weekend after a two-month hiatus due to the COVID-19 virus.

However, Mueller admitted it was strange to play Union behind closed doors at their compact Alten Foersterei stadium, which is usually packed with 22,000 passionate home fans.

"It felt a bit like the atmosphere you get for old man's football, 7pm, under floodlights, but as soon as the ball started to roll, the game took our focus," said Mueller.

The Bundesliga became the first top European league to resume this weekend, using draconian hygiene guidelines, regular testing of players and insisting on games in near-empty stadiums.

Hugging, embracing and handshakes were also banned.&nbsp;

"There were a few butterflies before the restart, wondering how it would go, like before the first game of the season in August," said Mueller.

"I wasn't worried about anything going wrong, everything was explained clearly to us.

"Union Berlin, just like us, were well prepared, no handshakes before kick-off etc."

Mueller said the defending champions were just happy to win their first game after the restart to keep them on course for an eighth consecutive league title.

"We came here with the goal of getting the three points," added Mueller.

"We had a bit more security after the second goal."

German league without fans like "old man's football", says Mueller

Werder Bremen are set to host Bayer&nbsp;Leverkusen at the Weserstadion on Sunday as live football action in Bundesliga continues. The German top-flight league resumed, behind the closed doors, on Saturday and both Werder Bremen and Bayer&nbsp;Leverkusen would be looking to kick-start their season again with a win.

While Bayer&nbsp;Leverkusen have been impressive in Bundesliga 2019-20 season by picking up 47 points off 25 matches and sit fifth in the standings, Werder Bremen have had a terrible season so far and are lying in the relegation zone (17) with just 18 points in 24 matches.

Bayer&nbsp;Leverkusen head into the match as heavy favourites and are expected to wrap up a comfortable victory given they hit a smooth transition post the resumption.&nbsp;

For Dream11 and fantasy players, the match brings good headache as both the sides boast quality players.&nbsp;

Premier League clubs will return to training in small groups from Tuesday after the latest stage of "Project Restart" was approved on Monday.

Clubs unanimously voted to allow players to start socially distanced training in a bid to meet the Premier League's mid-June date to resume the season.

Contact training is not permitted at this stage and corner flags, balls, cones, goalposts, playing surfaces and other equipment will be disinfected after each session.

Testing for the coronavirus has taken place at Premier League clubs over the last few days and will continue throughout the training period.

"Strict medical protocols of the highest standard will ensure everyone returns to training in the safest environment possible," a Premier League statement said.

"The health and well-being of all participants is the Premier League's priority, and the safe return to training is a step-by-step process.

"Full consultation will now continue with players, managers, clubs, the PFA and LMA as protocols for full-contact training are developed." The training protocols were presented to players and managers last week before being rubber-stamped during Monday's video conference call.

Other rules in phase one include players not travelling with anyone to or from training, while the use of public transport and team vehicles is banned.

Newcastle were one of the first top-flight teams to issue confirmation that players had been tested at their training ground.

The club said players would return on Tuesday, by which time all test results would be known.

Players will be asked to use an app on a daily basis to record any symptoms.

"It's been a really difficult time, but I hope with the news that phase one is about to start," Newcastle manager Steve Bruce said.

"I must stress that phase one looks as if it's as safe as it can be. I'm sure everyone will be delighted that we're trying to make that effort.

"In phase one we're allowed to train four to five people on one pitch, so basically a player has a quarter of a pitch to work within, so social distancing is not a problem. We'll train with eight to 10 at a time on two separate pitches.

"Everything is in place in the safety aspect. I've got no issues and I can tell the supporters the players and the staff are as safe as we possibly can be."

The resumption of Germany's Bundesliga over the weekend has raised expectations that the Premier League can follow suit.

But some Premier League players remain concerned over returning to work while the virus is still uncontained, with Britain one of the countries worst hit by the crisis.

Speaking to Good Morning Britain on Monday, Watford captain Troy Deeney said: "Phase one is social distancing individual training with a coach. That's no problem, that's like going to the park.

"Phase two will be next week six days of training, three to six people training together with contact and then six days after that you're going into 11 versus 11 and you can't social distance with 11 verus 11.

"I would say 98 per cent (of players) are very much aware that phase one is very good, I would say 65-70 per cent of people are concerned with phase two. I'd say even higher after that."

With the Premier League suspended since March 13 because of the pandemic, the green light for training came just hours after Britain's Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said he was hopeful the top-flight could resume in June.

"I had some very constructive discussions on Thursday with the FA, the EFL (English Football League) and the Premier League," Dowden told Sky News.

"We are working hard with them to try and get it back, aiming for mid-June, but the number one test is public safety.

"If we can sort that out then we will look to resume by mid-June. We're making good progress."

Neil Lennon's men were 13 points clear at the top of the table when the season was stopped due to the coronavirus pandemic in March with eight games remaining for the majority of clubs.

Second-placed Rangers had a game in hand to try and cut that gap and were due to face Celtic twice more before the end of the season.

A points-per-game formula for determining final league placings also sees bottom club Hearts relegated unless there is any progress in talks over league reconstruction.

"It is, of course, a real shame that we were not able to see out the league in front of our fans. However, no one can deny how deserved this title is," said Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell.

"While we rightly celebrate this fantastic, deserved achievement we must take time to consider the wider circumstances we have all been experiencing and remember those who have helped us through these unique and challenging times with such bravery and selflessness.&nbsp;

"We dedicate this title to everyone who has cared for us and all those who have been affected by these times of challenge and difficulty."

The three leagues below the Premiership were ended over a month ago when clubs passed a controversial resolution that allowed the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) board to also bring the top flight to a halt if it deemed the games could no longer be played.

Last week Rangers failed to gain support of the 42 member clubs for an independent inquiry into how the vote on the resolution was passed.

<h2>- Prize money to be released -</h2>

Premiership clubs agreed on Friday that finishing the season was no longer a realistic option.

Scottish clubs will not be allowed to return to training until June 10 at the earliest.

The cost of testing and the fact a high percentage of players will be out of contract in May and June were also highlighted by clubs as reasons why making a return to finishing the campaign was impractical.

"The SPFL has today announced that, following consultation with all 12 top-flight clubs, the Board of the SPFL has determined that the 2019/20 Premiership has been concluded with immediate effect," the league said in a statement.

By calling the season to an end, the SPFL can now release a final instalment of prize money to clubs based on their league position.

"On Friday, Premiership clubs expressed their clear and unanimous view that there was no realistic prospect of completing the outstanding fixtures from season 2019/20," said SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster.

"The SPFL board met this morning and in line with the express agreement of member clubs in April, the board determined that League season 2019/20 and the Premiership be brought to an end.

"This decision now enables us to pay out around £7 million ($8.5 million) in fees to help clubs stay afloat during this incredibly difficult time."

Leagues in France, Belgium and the Netherlands have also called their seasons to a premature end.

However, many more across Europe are hoping to follow the example of Germany's Bundesliga, which has already returned behind closed doors and with a series of strict safety measures in place to protect players and staff.

Football has finally returned to South Korea after a prolonged break due to COVID-19 pandemic. While the stadium&nbsp;was empty, South Korean football club FC Seoul tried filling their home ground with mannequins. But the move took a drastic turn after it was noticed that the mannequins are actually sex dolls.&nbsp;

Seoul FC has since apologized as they stated they have been a victim of a misunderstanding and mix-up as they stated that the supplier had made an assurance that the dolls were not intended for sexual use.

“We would like to apologise to the fans,” FC Seoul said in a statement on Instagram. “We are deeply sorry.”

Some on social media platforms pointed out that the dolls were carrying the name of live streamer BJ Chaero, who is reportedly the physical inspiration behind doll’s design, as per the Koreaboo website.

Bayern Munich on Sunday started the Bundesliga 2019-20 season post its resumption with a comfortable 2-0 win over Union Berlin at the Stadion An der Alten Forsterei as the Bavarians extended their lead at the top of the standings. Robert Lewandowski was on the scoresheet for the visitors as the Polish forward extended his rich-run of scoring form with his 26th goal of the season in the German top-flight league.&nbsp;

The surprise package of the Bundesliga 2019-20 season, Union Berlin started on a positive note before Bayern Munich’s player quality became evident and the Bavarians started dominated the possession. While both teams looked a bit rusty, quite understandable due to lack of football in the last couple of months, Berlin did create a good couple of chances early on, only to waste them with lack of proper finishing.&nbsp;

Bayern Munich displayed composure on the ball and sprayed it around in the early minutes before Thomas Muller tapped in a goal in the 19th-minute mark only for the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to disallow it. Nonetheless, Bayern kept on with the intensity while creating chances on a constant note.&nbsp;

The visitors’ tenacity finally paid off after Leon Goretzka was brought down by Union Berlin defender Neven Subotic only for Robert Lewandowski to step up and send goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz the wrong way to hand Bayern Munich the 1-0 lead in the 40th minute in the first half.&nbsp;

Bayern Munich hardly broke a sweat in the first half while dominating 66 per cent of possession with six shots in comparison. Interestingly both the sides covered more than 60 kilometre of distance in the first half despite the prolonged break.&nbsp;

Bayern Munich kept up the intensity in the second half and kept on barging forward in what has become a trademark Hansi Flick style of football. Under Flick, Bayern Munich have now scored 50 goals in just 16 matches.

After constant attacking pressure, Benjamin Pavard leapt the highest in order to convert a inch-perfect Joshua Kimmich corner in the 81st-minute of the match to extend Bayern Munich's lead to 2-0.&nbsp;

The Bavarians, with the win, extend their lead at the top of the table with 58 points under their belt whereas Union Berlin remained at 12th spot with 30 points to their name.&nbsp;

Cologne surrendered a two-goal lead Sunday, with players' calls echoing around the stadium, as strugglers Mainz fought back to earn a 2-2 draw in the Bundesliga.

On Saturday, the Bundesliga became the first top European league to return amid the coronavirus pandemic with second-placed Borussia Dortmund hammering Schalke 4-0 in the Ruhr derby.

Later Sunday, reigning champions Bayern Munich, who hold a one-point lead in their bid to win an eighth straight league title, are at mid-table Union Berlin.

In Cologne, the hosts took an early lead when Mark Uth, on loan from Schalke, converted a penalty with just six minutes gone after the striker was brought down in the area.

With hugs and handshakes banned, the players celebrated with elbow bumps instead.

Cologne added a second goal when Florian Kainz headed home a cross with just over half an hour left.

However, Mainz came roaring back with an hour played when replacement striker Taiwo Awoniyi, who had only been on for five minutes, tapped home from close range for his first Bundesliga goal.

Cameroon midfielder Pierre Kunde then earned a point for Mainz when he beat two defenders and poked the ball past Cologne goalkeeper Timo Horn to equalise on 72 minutes.

The result leaves Mainz on the verge of the relegation places but four points above the bottom three while Cologne are tenth.

KOL vs MAZ, Dream11 Prediction, Bundesliga: Fantasy football tips for FC Koln vs Mainz match

Bayern Munich restart their charge for an eighth straight Bundesliga title at Union Berlin on Sunday amid doubts the Bavarian giants will be able to last the distance after a two-month hiatus.

Hansi Flick's side hold a one-point lead at the top of the league heading into their trip to the German capital, which has been the scene of some impressive upsets thanks to promoted Union's form at their Alten Foersterei stadium.

Union have twice shocked the league leaders this season, beating Borussia Dortmund 3-1 in August and turning out 2-0 victors over Borussia Moenchengladbach three months later.

Now it's Bayern's turn.

Flick is unsure of his team's ability to play out a full match of professional football after having only received the go-ahead to resume full team training last week.

"We don't know if the team can hold out over 90 minutes," said Flick. "We have trained well and played three matches of 20 minutes each last Sunday.

"They were played at a very high intensity, but we don't know clearly where we stand.

"We have to just deal with the situation."

The Bundesliga is the first major league in Europe to return to action since the coronavirus brought football to a halt two months ago and has only come back with a host of strict health regulations, chief among them empty stands in what are usually passion-filled stadiums.

That means Union won't be able to count on their ferocious home support at their ground on the eastern outskirts of the German capital.

They will also be without their coach Urs Fischer after breaking the team quarantine following the death of his father-in-law.

"It's not possible to surprise Bayern with the experience their players have," said assistant coach Markus Hoffmann, who will take charge of Union for the Bayern match.

"They've already experienced everything.

"We have to concentrate on ourselves and try to implement what we can to influence the game in the best possible way."

<h2>- 'Very, very strange' -</h2>

Bayern's lead was cut to a single point by Borussia Dortmund, who on Saturday showed no ring rustiness in a 4-0 demolition of Ruhr rivals Schalke.

Young gun Erling Braut Haaland was again the headline act, scoring the first Bundesliga goal after the restart and setting up Raphael Guerreiro for the first of his brace.

In one of a series of odd scenes that peppered the first day back, Dortmund's players jogged over to applaud an empty 'Sudtribune', which would for a normal derby would be jammed with 25,000 delirous fans hailing a huge victory that keeps pressure on their title rivals.

"There was no noise. You shoot at the goal, make a top pass, score a goal, and nothing happens," said Dortmund coach Lucien Favre.

"That's very, very strange. We really missed our fans."

As well as the echoing arenas, a host of other rules have been put in place to try to stop the spread of the virus, from frequent testing to masks for players on the subs bench and a week-long quarantine for teams ahead of the restart.

However, advice to socially distance didn't stop Hertha Berlin players from celebrating their goals in a 3-0 win at Hoffenheim by hugging each other.

"The fact is that this is part of football," said Hertha coach Bruno Labbadia. "We've been tested so many times that we can allow it.

"If you can't celebrate anymore, the whole thing breaks down."

A German Football League (DFL) spokesman&nbsp;confirmed there will be no punishment, as it had only offered "guidelines" on how goals should be celebrated.

The DFL has also made no secret of the fact that several clubs are in a dire financial situation as a result of the lockdown.

If they are able to complete the nine remaining rounds of matches by June 30, clubs could receive around 300 million euros ($324 million) from television contracts.

Clubs in England, Spain and Italy, where leagues are weeks away from returning, will be watching to see how the rest of weekend goes.

Bayern aim to shake off cobwebs with quiet confidence in Berlin

The German Bundesliga on Saturday became the first major European league to resume playing after a two-month coronavirus lockdown.

Matches were played without fans while goal celebrations were banned and benches observed social distancing.

AFP Sport looks at the reaction:

"There is something surreal about it. In the two hours before the match, you receive text messages from all over the world, people who tell you that they are going to watch the match on TV, and then you drive through your city and there is absolutely nothing happening. You have to get used to it."

-- Borussia Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke after his team's 4-0 win over local rivals Schalke

"There is no noise, you shoot at the goal, you make a great pass, you score, and nothing happens, it's very, very weird."

-- Dortmund coach Lucien Favre

"Not necessarily for the players, who may have to buy one less Lamborghini, but for the economy that depends on it -- the coaches, ground staff, fan shops. On a match day, some shops, including fast-food stands, rake in revenues equivalent to that of a normal week."

-- Long-standing Dortmund supporter Marco Perz on why it was crucial the German season restarted

"For us the situation is not really new. We have already been training in empty stadiums. But it is sad not to have fans in the stadium. In the long run, it doesn't matter. It won't affect the quality of the game if there are no spectators. Also as a coach, this isn't something new as I have trained youth teams in the past and I always heard myself shouting."

-- Freiburg coach Christian Streich&nbsp;

"The day was a bit odd. I am an emotional man, I like to take a player in my arms, which I obviously couldn't do today."&nbsp;

-- Uwe Rosler, the coach of Duesseldorf

<h2>....and the not so serious</h2>

"I remember when I was at Hamburg, I played in an empty stadium - it didn't put me off, I bagged twenty goals in as many minutes. Then I got rollocked by a groundsman who told me we were in fact playing away at Bayern that day and no bugger had told me. It did explain a lot."

Who's saying what as the Bundesliga returns

Germany gave football-starved fans reason to be cheerful on Saturday with the Bundesliga's return to action behind closed doors, on a day in which Borussia Dortmund hammered local rivals Schalke in an echoing Signal Iduna Park.

Here AFP looks at some of the most eye-catching things from a memorable day in the history of the sport:

<h2>Haaland keeps it socially distanced</h2>

Wonderkid striker Erling Braut Haaland began where he left off with the first Bundesliga goal of its restart after a two-month break caused by the coronavirus.

Haaland turned home Thorgan Hazard's low cross just before the half hour to open the scoring against Schalke. It was the 19-year-old's 10th goal in just nine Bundesliga appearances and set his team on their way to a thumping 4-0 derby victory.

Instead of being mobbed by jubilant teammates, Haaland made sure that they all kept their distance as he bobbed a cheeky little dance on the sidelines, in homage to the strict hygiene rules that the league has to follow.

<h2>Schalke take five</h2>

Schalke became the first team to make use of the rule change that allows five substitutions in a game, with David Wagner using the maximum number at Dortmund.

Timo Becker replaced Everton loanee Jonjoe Kenny with three minutes remaining as Schalke suffered &nbsp;destruction at the hands of Lucien Favre's flamboyant side.

Favre, meanwhile, used four substitutions, with man-of-the-match Raphael Guerreiro replaced by Marcel Schmelzer in the final moments after adding to Haaland's opener with an impressive brace.

The increase in subs, approved by the game's lawmakers earlier this month, was adopted by the Bundesliga to limit the risk of injury following two months without matches.

<h2>Masked men line the dugout</h2>

As well as the unusual sight of normally packed stands shorn of the boisterous support that accompanies the Bundesliga, fans watching on TV saw players wearing masks on the sidelines.

Players on the bench wore protective masks in compliance with the stringent safety guidelines implemented to allow the Bundesliga to resume before Europe's other top leagues.

Schalke alternated players on the bench&nbsp;in order to respect social distancing rules while a contact sport was being played out on the field.

<h2>Augsburg fans question restart</h2>

While fans across the world celebrated being able to watch top-level live football after a two-month drought, some supporters questioned the wisdom in restarting the league.

Augsburg followers hung a banner in front of an empty stand that read "Football gives life -- your business is sick" in protest at football being played&nbsp;while the pandemic still takes lives across Europe.

There was little joy for the home side on the pitch either, with Daniel Ginczek's stoppage time strike handing Wolfsburg a 2-1 win and deepening Augsburg's relegation fears.

<h2>Dortmund salute empty wall</h2>

A resounding victory over Schalke would usually see Dortmund's players celebrating in front of a throbbing 'Yellow Wall', the massive terrace behind the goal at Signal Iduna Park that holds up to 25,000 passionate fans.

However, with the stadium all-but-empty and the only noise being the cheers and clapping of players and coaches, Dortmund still jogged over to applaud the 'Sudtribune' in honour of the fervent support that usually pours from the stand.

<h2>Clean balls, please</h2>

The decision to allow German football to restart came with a host of government regulations, including the masks on the bench and plexiglass separating players and journalists for post-match interviews.

One of the rules states that match balls need to be regularly disinfected by personnel wearing gloves, as the German Football League attempts to limit the spread of the virus and finish the 2019-20 season.

Football but not as we know it: odd sights from Bundesliga comeback

RB Leipzig were held to a 1-1 draw by Freiburg as the Bundesliga restarted following the coronavirus suspension on Saturday, suffering a further knock to their dwindling title hopes.

Julian Nagelsmann's third-placed side sit four points behind league leaders Bayern Munich ahead of the reigning champions' visit to Union Berlin on Sunday, and it would have been worse if Freiburg midfielder Robin Koch's late effort had not been ruled out by VAR.

Leipzig's title dreams had started to slip away before the lockdown started, as back-to-back draws with Bayer Leverkusen and Wolfsburg in March had seen them fall five points off the pace.

Players and coaches sitting on the bench wore protective masks in compliance with the stringent safety guidelines implemented to allow the Bundesliga to resume before Europe's other top leagues.

The hosts started brightly at an eerily-quiet Red Bull Arena, with Timo Werner and Nordi Mukiele both going close to opening the scoring in the first half an hour.

But Freiburg claimed a surprise lead 12 minutes before half-time as Vincenzo Grifo's low corner was diverted in by centre-back Manuel Gulde.

Leipzig continued to dominate possession in the second period and wasted a golden chance in the 57th minute as on-loan Everton winger Ademola Lookman volleyed wide when totally unmarked just yards from goal.

Freiburg had to rely on their goalkeeper the next time Leipzig carved them open, as Alexander Schwolow stretched out a leg to brilliantly deny Werner a 28th goal of the season.

Leipzig gave themselves fresh hope of turning the game around in the 77th minute, though, as Yussuf Poulsen headed past Schwolow.

The home side pushed for a winner, as Marcel Sabitzer and Patrik Schick joined Lookman in coming off the bench, but failed to carve out another clear-cut opportunity.

Instead, it was Freiburg who thought they had snatched a dramatic injury-time victory, only for Koch's close-range finish to be ruled out for offside following a VAR review.

Leipzig title hopes hit by Freiburg draw on Bundesliga restart

There was a strange feeling in the empty Signal Iduna Park as Borussia Dortmund locked horns with arch-rivals FC Schalke in what was a one-sided Ruhr Derby and first set of Bundesliga matches after the resumption of the league on Saturday (May 16). Even though Borussia Dortmund ran riot against their bitter rivals by winning the match 4-0, the lack of the iconic yellow wall, no chants and echoing voices of players and support staff clearly gave a glimpse of what sporting activities could like post-COVID-19.&nbsp;

Both Dortmund and Schalke took to the ground one by one due to new social distancing norms with staff and other officials wearing masks. After the referee blew the whistle for the commencement of the match in front of empty stands, FC Schalke 04 started with early possession before Dortmund’s high press and intensity caught up to them following a break off 66 days.&nbsp;

An early chance fell to the feet of Erling Haaland in the ninth minute, however, the young sensation’s first touch let him down. Schalke did try to hurt their arch-rivals as Merit showed early promising signs, however, the lack of final delivery constantly disappointed the Blues.&nbsp;

Achraf Hakimi’s threat from the right flank was visible from the word go and the energetic right-back created a superb chance in the 10th minute only for Dortmund attackers to scrap it wide. Thorgan Hazard was the main threat on the ball for Dortmund as the Belgian looked lively and in-control right after the whistle.

<h2>Erling Haaland - born to score</h2>

A fluid build-up and an inch-perfect cross by Hakimi allowed Haaland to score Bundesliga’s first goal post-resumption and the Norwegian came up with an interesting celebration as he danced to the tune of stadium music away while maintaining a distance with his teammates.&nbsp;

<h2>Rafael Guerreiro - on the scoresheet, twice</h2>

Rafael Guerriero came to life as he netted&nbsp;a brace showing impressive energy and technique in the build-up. In between, Guerreiro’s brace, Thorgan Hazard came up with a calm finish to help Dortmund net four past their rivals and resume the Bundesliga with a bang.

There was a strange feeling in the empty Signal Iduna Park as Borussia Dortmund locked horns with arch-rivals FC Schalke in what was a one-sided Ruhr Derby and first set of Bundesliga matches after the resumption of the league on Saturday (May 16). Even though Borussia Dortmund ran riot against their bitter rivals by winning the match 4-0, the lack of the iconic yellow wall, no chants and echoing voices of players and support staff clearly gave a glimpse of what sporting activities could like post-COVID-19. Both Dortmund and Schalke took to the ground one by one due to new social distancing norms with staff and other officials wearing masks. After the referee blew the whistle for the commencement of the match in front of empty stands, FC Schalke 04 started with early possession before Dortmund’s high press and intensity caught up to them following a break off 66 days. An early chance fell to the feet of Erling Haaland in the ninth minute, however, the young sensation’s first touch let him down. Schalke did try to hurt their arch-rivals as Merit showed early promising signs, however, the lack of final delivery constantly disappointed the Blues. Erling Haaland - born to score A fluid build-up and an inch-perfect cross by Hakimi allowed Haaland to score Bundesliga’s first goal post-resumption and the Norwegian came up with an interesting celebration as he danced to the tune of stadium music away while maintaining a distance with his teammates. Watch - Dortmund's Erling Haaland scores Bundesliga's first goal post resumption; comes up with interesting celebration Rafael Guerreiro - on the scoresheet, twice Rafael Guerriero came to life as he netted a brace showing impressive energy and technique in the build-up. In between, Guerreiro’s brace, Thorgan Hazard came up with a calm finish to help Dortmund net four past their rivals and resume the Bundesliga with a bang. With the win, Dortmund close the gap with leader Bayern Munich by one point as the Black and Yellow moved to 54 points. What happened elsewhere? In the other matches, Wolfsburg defeated Augsburg 1-2 following an additional time finish by D Ginczek, whereas, Dusseldorf played out a goalless draw against Paderborn. Hertha Berlin walked past Hoffenheim with a 3-0 win while Red Bull Leipzig playing a 1-1 draw with Freiburg.

Bundesliga: Haaland, Guerreiro shine as Borussia Dortmund hammer FC Schalke 4-0

Eintracht Frankfurt are set to host Borussia Monchengladbach at the Commerzbank Arena in what promises to be another exciting fixture of Bundesliga 2019-20 season as live football comes back to life after a prolonged break due to COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;

While no spectators will be allowed to watch the match keeping the government advisory in mind, Frankfurt would be hoping to use home stadium advantage and upset a free-flowing Monchengladbach side. While Frankfurt are 13th in the standings, Monchengladbach are sitting at fourth spot with 49 point under their belt.&nbsp;

FRK vs MOB, Dream11 Prediction, Bundesliga: Fantasy football tips for Eintrach Frankfurt vs Borussia Monchengladbach

Football is back to life with Bundesliga’s resumption on Saturday (May 16). While there is not a single spectator sitting in the stands, there is a sense of relief that footballing action is finally back. Young sensation Erling Haaland registered the first Bundesliga goal post-resumption as Borussia Dortmund took a first-half lead against arch-rivals FC Schalke 04 at the Signal Iduna Park.&nbsp;

There were no crowd celebrations&nbsp;but Haaland and his teammates did celebrate, without touching each other, near the corner flag as the Norwegian jogged with a pointed finger&nbsp;following his clever finish in the 29th minute of the game.&nbsp;
