Having weathered rain, heat, and bone-chilling cold for over one-and-a-half years, during which around 600 lives were lost, the farmers on Thursday decided to suspend their agitation after the government repealed three controversial agriculture laws.

The farmers have said that they will vacate Singhu, Tikri and Ghazipur borders in Delhi after holding a victory parade on Saturday.

Announcing the decision, Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM)— an umbrella of various farmers' unions—said they would meet again in Delhi on January 15 to see the progress on the promises made by the government.

“We have decided to suspend our agitation. We will hold a review meeting on January 15. If the government doesn't fulfil its promises, we could resume our agitation,” ANI news agency quoted farmer leader Gurnam Singh Charuni as saying.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the SKM earlier in the day after a draft proposal from the government was received on the pending issues of farmers.&nbsp;

The demands of the farmers include a law on the minimum support price (MSP), withdrawal of the draft Electricity Amendments Bill, 2020/2021, withdrawal of criminal cases against farmers and compensation for the families of farmers who died during the year-long protest against the three farm laws, now repealed.&nbsp;

Earlier, the protesting farmers had received a letter from the Government of India, with promises of forming a committee on MSP and withdrawing cases against them immediately.

“As far as the matter of compensation is concerned, UP and Haryana have given in-principle consent,” the letter reads.

However, the final decision on ending the year-long farmers’ agitation would be taken by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), according to the farmers.

On November 19, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had in a national address announced that his government would be repealing the three contentious farm laws&nbsp;and urged farmers to return home.

However, farmers refused to budge from their spot as they asserted that they would leave only after a MSP guarantee and other demands were met.

Last Saturday, the SKM, which has been spearheading the agitation, formed a five-member panel on Saturday to hold talks with the government on the pending demands and had declared that a decision on withdrawing the agitation would be taken by Wednesday.

Prepared to crack down, they pushed and dragged away from the protesters, claiming to be just doing their job.&nbsp;

Now as for the woman who was left partially exposed, the Manchester Police said they have spoken to her and offered their apologies.&nbsp;

They say the incident was not deliberate but was indeed regrettable.&nbsp;

They arrested the women who were just trying to raise their concerns about women safety.

What has the British government done about this?

It has tabled a new bill to further increase the powers of the police. The bill is called "The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Court Bill" and it's highly problematic.

It gives the police the power of discretion to determine which protests are unlawful and must be dealt with force.&nbsp;

This has led to a national outcry with rights groups and civilians hitting the streets, calling "kill the bill".&nbsp;

They say the bill will outlaw every protest that causes discomfort to 10 Downing Street and will make it easier to convict protesters over petty charges.&nbsp;

In the last two weeks, these protests have taken place in Bristol, Birmingham, Brighton, Cambridge, Liverpool, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield, among others.&nbsp;

The protests have been peaceful, but the police response not so much.

Police are using shields as weapons, hitting protesters with batons, shoving them to the ground and when all else fails, simply tossing a police club in their faces.

Why UK needs to look into the mirror before lecturing others

Long queues of vehicles choked the roads in parts of the national capital on Monday as the Delhi Police kept the Singhu and Tikri borders closed and heightened checking at other places in the wake of the ongoing protests by farmers.

Both the border points at Singhu and Tikri remained closed with the farmers rejecting the Centre's offer to hold talks over the new farm laws opposed by them.

The closure of borders has also resulted in heavy traffic on other alternate routes between Delhi and Haryana.

The Delhi Traffic Police tweeted, "Singhu Border is still closed from both sides. Please take alternate route. Traffic has been diverted from Mukarba Chowk &amp; GTK road. Traffic is very very heavy. Please avoid outer ring road from signature bridge to Rohini &amp; vice versa, GTK road, NH 44 &amp; Singhu borders.?

In another tweet, it said Tikri border is also closed for traffic movement whiel Jharoda, Dhansa, Daurala Jhatikara, Badusari, Kapashera, Rajokri NH 8, Bijwasan-Bajghera, Palam vihar and Dundahera borders were open and available to Haryana.

Policemen in large numbers were deployed on the Delhi-Gurgaon border and vehicle checking was intensified.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Ingit Pratap Singh said, "We have not received any inputs on farmers coming here but as a precautionary measure, we have deployed our forces."

The Gurugram Traffic Police also alerted commuters about the congestion.

"Traffic congestion has been reported on NH-48 near Sarhol Toll towards Delhi due to slow entry of vehicles into Delhi. @TrafficGGM is on the spot to facilitate the traffic. Inconvenience caused is highly regretted," it tweeted from its official handle.

The agitating farmers demanding scrapping of the new farm laws have also warned to close all five entry points to the national capital.

After a meeting of over 30 farmer groups on Sunday, their representatives said they will not move to the Burari ground for their protest as suggested by the Centre.

They said the farmers will not accept any conditional dialogue and will block all five entry points to Delhi.&nbsp;
