The latest report of the team on the new discoveries was&nbsp;published&nbsp;in the Pompeii Sites’ e-journal. Among these discoveries, what stood out for archaeologists was the frescoes of ancient gladiators.&nbsp;

<h2>Archaeologists decode child-drawn frescoes</h2>

As per the experts, it is believed that the children drew the sketches of gladiators on the walls after watching their battles at the amphitheatre of Pompeii.

The charcoal frescoes were discovered during excavations at I’Insula dei Casti Amanti, which is a group of homes located in Pompeii’s archaeological park which was opened for the public for the first time on Tuesday (May 28).

Meanwhile, other frescoes made on a long wall included the outline of three small hands, a hunting scene of an animal which looked like a boar, two people playing with a ball and two boxers lying on the ground.

Director of Pompeii’s archaeological park Gabriel Zuchtriegel said the sketches were probably made by one or more children who played in a courtyard before the destruction happened after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD79.

“Together with psychologists from the Federico II [university of Naples], we have come to the conclusion that the drawings of gladiators and hunters were made based on a direct vision, and not of pictorial models. They had probably witnessed battles in the amphitheatre, thus coming into contact with an extreme form of spectacularised violence," he said.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Italian Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano said: “More and more, Pompeii is revealing wonderful new discoveries that confirm [the site] as an extraordinary treasure chest.”

The first excavations in Pompeii ruins started in 1748 and it is the world's second most visited archaeological site.

Archaeologists have recovered antique treasure hiding in plain sight below the streets of a French city. The newly found antiquity of several sandstone sarcophagi was uncovered in the downtown of Dijon, in eastern France. The sarcophagi are stone coffins typically adorned with a sculpture or inscription.&nbsp;

These sarcophagi, found during excavations conducted by the National Institute of Preventive Archaeological Research (INRAP), belong to the early medieval period, announced INRAP in a press release.&nbsp;

The exact site of excavations was at the foot of the Church of Saint-Jean in Dijon, which is an interesting site for historians and archaeologists alike for its long-standing history.&nbsp;

<h2>Medieval stone coffins found below the streets of a French city</h2>

The sarcophagi found in Dijon were made of sandstone and had a trapezoidal shape. These shapes are characteristic of the Merovingian period, which dates back to the 6th-8th century, as per the excavating team. Hence, these sarcophagi are more than 1200 years old and some were found in damaged form due to overlapping burials.&nbsp;

Apart from these medieval-era stone coffins, archaeologists also unearthed limestone sarcophagus with a cuboid shape and a heavy, curved lid. The team said that this stone coffin appears to be much older than the sandstone ones, perhaps dating to the 5th century.

Three skeletons were also found&nbsp;inside the limestone coffin, indicating that it was once used for multiple burials over different periods. Researchers at INRAP will now deep dive into these skeletons to find their exact date of origin.

The Church of Saint-Jean was once described as a “funerary basilica” by Merovingian author Gregory of Tours. The present standing building there is, though, quite different from what Gregory described in his books.

The current building was constructed at the site during the 15th century in the Gothic style and the structure underwent various modifications in the subsequent centuries. During the French Revolution, the building became national property and subsequently served multiple secular uses. Finally, it became the Parvis Saint-Jean Theatre in 1974, which is still operating today.

In the early Middle Ages, Dijon was a fortified town with a necropolis outside the city walls, next to the site of the church.

In addition to the sarcophagi, excavations have unveiled numerous other graves within this necropolis, notably consisting of tombs crafted from stone slabs. Of particular interest are the abundant child burials, indicative of the period spanning the 11th to 13th centuries.

Post the 15th century,&nbsp;the necropolis shrank to a single region south of the Church of Saint-Jean, housing burials possibly extending as late as the 18th century.

The archaeologists unearthed the ruins of a 5,000-year-old tomb in Orkney, which reflected the best construction example of neolithic engineering in northern Britain. 
 
During the excavation, 14 articulated skeletons of women, men and children – two of them positioned in a way as if they were embracing each other – were discovered inside one of the six cells or side rooms. 
 
The tomb has been measuring more than 15m in diameter and includes a stone structure, which can be reached through a long passage which is around seven metres. 
 
Senior curator of prehistory (neolithic) at the National Museums Scotland Dr Hugo Anderson-Whymark along with professor of neolithic archaeology at Cardiff University Vicki Cummings headed the excavation.

Anderson-Whymark spoke to The Guardian about the “incredible excitement” as they removed topsoil and started seeing the outline plan of this tomb, which is circular in shape and has a rectangular chamber which is surrounded by six cells with curved backs. 
 
“Seven or eight metres across the interior is really big. We had found not only the tomb, but then in situ articulated skeletons – the icing on the cake,” he said. 
 
He added that the corbelled construction included stones which were built up gradually for creating cell chambers that continued to narrow as they rose. 
 
“They really are engineering feats. The tomb would have been an immense feature in the landscape when it was originally constructed, and the stonework inside would have been very impressive,” he said.

<h2>Orkney and its Neolithic tombs</h2>

Till now, the site was overlooked as it faced destruction during the 18th or 19th centuries when stone was used for constructing a building nearby, which was demolished about a decade ago. 
 
After digging further into the ruins, traces of a wall were discovered along with a stone macehead, a ball and eight skeletons. 
 
Antiquary James Walls Cursiter reported these discoveries in a local newspaper and stated that it was likely a ruined tomb.

Speaking about Orkney being filled with neolithic tombs, Anderson-Whymark said: “Orkney is exceptionally rich in archaeology, but we never expected to find a tomb of this size in such a small-scale excavation. It’s incredible to think this once impressive monument was nearly lost without record.” 
 
“It is incredibly rare to find these tomb deposits, even in well-preserved chambered tombs, and these remains will enable new insights into all aspects of these peoples’ lives,” Cummings added while speaking to The Guardian.
