A 29-year-old environmental activist and forestry student from Ghana is making headlines after he set a new world record for hugging more than 1,100 trees in one hour.&nbsp;

The record-breaking feat took place in the Tuskegee National Forest, one of the four national forests in the state of Alabama, United States, the Guinness World Records (GWR) announced on Friday (Apr 26).&nbsp;

<h2>About the record</h2>

Abubakar Tahiru took his love for trees to the next level after he rushed through the forest hugging a total of 1,123 trees in one hour, which according to the record-keeping organisation is an average of 19 trees per minute.&nbsp;

For this record, a hug was defined as “both arms wrapped around a tree in a close embrace,” said the GWR.&nbsp;

The criteria for the record also included rules like no tree should be hugged more than once and any damage to the trees can result in disqualification.&nbsp;

Tahiru, according to the GWR, hugged one three for around three seconds and easily surpassed the minimum requirement of 700 to become the first holder of this record.

<h2>‘Incredibly rewarding’</h2>

Speaking about the record-breaking feat, the 29-year-old said that the hardest part of the record attempt was to quickly move between the trees while ensuring that each hug met the criteria.&nbsp;

He also said that the “repetitive hugging motion” was “quite tiring.”

“Achieving this world record feels incredibly rewarding,” said Tahiru, as quoted by the GWR. He added, “It’s a meaningful gesture to highlight the crucial role of trees in our ecosystem and the urgency of environmental conservation.”

Tahiru grew up in a farming community in Tepa, Ghana, where he also developed a keen interest in nature and its conservation.&nbsp;

Tahiru moved to Alabama, last year after finishing his undergraduate degree specialising in forestry at one of Ghana’s top universities and is currently pursuing his master’s degree in the subject at Auburn University.&nbsp;

After he set the new world record, the 29-year-old also spoke about how important it is for him to inspire the youth in Ghana “especially those from less privileged communities like the one I grew up in,” and show them “that it’s possible to rise above challenges and make a significant impact.”

At least five people associated with Just Stop Oil, which is a British environmental activist group, have been arrested after the group protested and stopped a performance of Les Miserables at the Sondheim Theatre in London's West End.&nbsp;

Some members of the Just Stop Oil group stormed the stage with banners during a performance of the song "Do You Hear the People Sing?"

A video of the same has been circulated on social media forums, in which the performance can be seen stopped when one member shouted "just stop oil". The protest was booed by the audience.&nbsp;

The group wrote on X: "4 people are locked to the stage of the French-revolution-themed show. Valjean steals bread to feed a starving child. How long before we are all forced to steal?"&nbsp;

The protesters were taken away by the technical staff immediately after they came on the stage, with the safety curtain coming down after the main curtain.&nbsp;

As quoted by Sky News, Hannah Taylor of Just Stop Oil said that the "show cannot go on".&nbsp;

"We are facing catastrophe. New oil and gas means crop failure, starvation and death. It is an act of war on the global south and an utter betrayal of young people," Taylor said.&nbsp;

Such protests have been happening as recently, the climate activists in Germany sprayed orange and yellow paint onto Berlin's iconic Brandenburg Gate. The protesters were urging the government to take more urgent action against climate change.&nbsp;

Local reports said that more than 10 activists carried out the protest in the German capital on Sunday morning using paint sprayed from fire extinguishers.&nbsp;

Wandering the streets of LA and surrounding towns, Rob Greenfield wears a specially designed suit that can hold all the junk he has produced over the past few weeks.

His clear plastic suit has specially constructed pockets to carry all the rubbish from the drinks, snacks, and meals he consumed and weighs around 62 pounds or 28 kilograms.

Speaking to AFP, Greenfield said "We throw it in the garbage can and it goes away and we never think about it again. I wanted to create a visual that helps people to really see how much our trash adds up."

Although the sight of a man dressed in rubbish wandering around posh areas of one of America's most overtly consumerist cities raises some eyebrows, he claims that most people are curious to learn more.

"There are some people who think I’m someone who’s experiencing homelessness or that I have a mental health issue, but for the most part, people have just been very positive.

There are just a few days left of his 30 days challenge. Rob, who is a minimalist, has for the duration of this challenge decided to live and consume like the average American.

Noting that an average person in the US produces around 5 pounds of waste per day, &nbsp;Greenfield says that on day 12, he really started to feel "the burden of consumerism".
