French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has announced significant cuts to France's unemployment benefits to support President Emmanuel Macron’s economic reform agenda.

French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has announced significant cuts to France's unemployment benefits to support President Emmanuel Macron’s economic reform agenda. The proposed changes, detailed by Attal in an interview with La Tribune, include reducing the maximum duration of jobless benefits from 18 months to 15 months. Additionally, the period required for work to qualify for these benefits will be extended. The government plans to implement these changes by December 1. Prime Minister Attal noted that the reform is not primarily a cost-cutting measure but is designed to increase employment and thereby sustain the benefits system through higher workforce participation. An adviser to Attal projected that these changes could save up to €3.6 billion ($3.9 billion) annually and increase the workforce by 90,000 individuals. Furthermore, the reforms will redefine the age at which workers are considered "senior," lowering it to 57 years, allowing them to qualify for improved, albeit less generous, benefits. This adjustment aims to balance the benefits provided to older workers with the need to encourage longer participation in the labour market. These measures follow a stern warning from the International Monetary Fund regarding France's escalating debt and a call for stronger efforts to control budget deficits. The French fiscal watchdog has also criticised current plans, labelling them as lacking in credibility and coherence. French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire reaffirmed that the government would continue to make efforts towards reducing the budget deficit, pledging to meet the European Union's deficit limit of 3 per cent of GDP by 2027. This fiscal responsibility is seen as crucial in maintaining economic stability and credibility within the EU. The timing of these announcements is particularly noteworthy, coming just two weeks before the European Parliament elections. Polls suggest a possible victory for Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally party, which has vocally opposed Macron’s labour reforms, arguing that they unfairly disadvantage workers. French President Emmanuel Macron warns Europe 'could die', calls for stronger defence

<p>French President Emmanuel Macron has hinted that star footballer Kylian Mbappe might be on his way to Real Madrid at the end of the season. Macron made the revelation while answering questions related to Paris Olympics where he&nbsp;hoped that Mbappe's club would allow him to play for the French men's football team in the quadrennial event.&nbsp;</p>

<p>When asked if he was referring to Real Madrid as the particular club, Macron&nbsp;said with a wry smile: "Exactly, that’s what I meant.”</p>

<p>Notably, the participation of players in the Olympics depends on the policy of the respective clubs that the footballer plays for.&nbsp;</p>

<p>French President Emmanuel Macron has said the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics would be moved if there is a serious risk of a terrorist attack, adding that backup plans were in place to deal with any such contingency.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In less than four months, Paris will be hosting the biggest sporting carnival on the planet with the opening ceremony taking place on the iconic Seine river. However, a recent upsurge in threats from terrorists has soured the anticipation surrounding the quadrennial event.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“If we think there are risks, depending on our analysis of the context, we have fallback scenarios. There are plans B and C and we are preparing them in parallel," said Macron in a television interview on Monday (Apr 15).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, the organisers have planned a 'world first' opening ceremony, scheduled for July 26, when over 300,000 people are expected to watch an armada of boats carrying national teams down the river.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We’ll be analysing the situation in real-time and preparing a ceremony that would be limited to Trocadéro, where we wouldn’t use the whole of the Seine, or even a ceremony that would bring the public to the Stade de France, which is what has been done traditionally,” Macron said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“What the terrorists want is to prevent us from dreaming, and that’s their greatest victory," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Six months after Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs described New Delhi G20 Leaders' Summit as 'nothing to be proud of', Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba came to the Indian capital. Invoking Mahatma Gandhi for "freedom and independence", Kuleba hoped to win New Delhi's official attendance at the Swiss Peace Summit in which Kyiv has announced that it will discuss its 'peace formula' to end the war in Ukraine that has now entered its third year.</p>

<p>Moscow, for its part, has already rejected Kyiv's peace formula that calls for&nbsp;withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine, release of prisoners, restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, and guarantees on nuclear safety.</p>

<p>From criticising India for buying Russian oil to&nbsp;meeting External Affairs Minister Jaishankar this week, Kyiv has travelled a distance in its Delhi outreach. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky&nbsp;met PM Modi for the first time since the beginning of war&nbsp;in May last year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The ball is in Delhi’s court on the Swiss summit.</p>

<p>Speaking at an event on March 27, External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar before meeting his Ukrainian counterpart, said: "We took a position from the start. That you are not going to get a solution to this conflict on the battlefield. Two years have passed. There were many who felt two years ago or somewhere in between that maybe they could. Today many of them don't any longer."</p>

<p>"We have also been the country who have the opportunity to talk to the Russians quite frankly and bluntly on the issue. On different aspects, the others have used us to pass messages," Jaishankar said, meaning that New Delhi as Moscow's 'special and privileged strategic partner' has been playing the middleman's role.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It is to these exact credentials of New Delhi that Kuleba came to appeal. Whether the visit was a success or not, New Delhi's nature of representation at Swiss peace summit would tell.&nbsp;</p>

Six months after Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs described New Delhi G20 Leaders' Summit as 'nothing to be proud of', Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba came to the Indian capital. Invoking Mahatma Gandhi for "freedom and independence", Kuleba hoped to win New Delhi's official attendance at the Swiss Peace Summit in which Kyiv has announced that it will discuss its 'peace formula' to end the war in Ukraine that has now entered its third year. Moscow, for its part, has already rejected Kyiv's peace formula that calls for withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine, release of prisoners, restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, and guarantees on nuclear safety. In New Delhi, I had sincere and comprehensive talks with @DrSJaishankar about Ukrainian-Indian bilateral relations, the situation in our regions, and global security. We paid specific attention to the Peace Formula and next steps on the path of its implementation. We also… pic.twitter.com/2aLQQBuqAJ — Dmytro Kuleba (@DmytroKuleba) March 29, 2024 × From criticising India for buying Russian oil to meeting External Affairs Minister Jaishankar this week, Kyiv has travelled a distance in its Delhi outreach. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky met PM Modi for the first time since the beginning of war in May last year. The ball is in Delhi’s court on the Swiss summit. Speaking at an event on March 27, External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar before meeting his Ukrainian counterpart, said: "We took a position from the start. That you are not going to get a solution to this conflict on the battlefield. Two years have passed. There were many who felt two years ago or somewhere in between that maybe they could. Today many of them don't any longer." "We have also been the country who have the opportunity to talk to the Russians quite frankly and bluntly on the issue. On different aspects, the others have used us to pass messages," Jaishankar said, meaning that New Delhi as Moscow's 'special and privileged strategic partner' has been playing the middleman's role. It is to these exact credentials of New Delhi that Kuleba came to appeal. Whether the visit was a success or not, New Delhi's nature of representation at Swiss peace summit would tell. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil The internet briefly moved over Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce this week as the Brazilian capital showed the world one rare moment of bonhomie between President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and his visiting French counterpart Emmanuel Macron. Holding hands, smiling at the skies, gushing at richly diverse Amazon forests — President Lula and Macron gave internet the wedding vibes all over. Macron spent three days in Brazil this week, including in the capital Rio de Janeiro, the Amazon, São Paulo, and Brasilia. "They are going to marry in the Amazon and have their honeymoon in Paris," one person said online about the images. Notably, among the policy announcements made during the trip was a new $1 billion investment plan to help protect the Amazon rainforest. In one meme, shared by Macron and Lula on Instagram, the two leaders are seen walking hand-in-hand superimposed over a poster for 2016 romantic musical La La Land. Diplomatic visit or wedding pics? Macron and Lula’s photos during Amazon visit sparks social media frenzy

<p>French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin on Monday (Mar 25) announced multiple new anti-drug raids across the country, terming them as "XXL cleanup operations".</p>

<p>Darmanin said that police units conducted raids and also arrested several people in various cities such as Lille, Villeneuve-d'Ascq and Roubaix.</p>

<p>He stated that in the coming days, the authorities were "going to multiply the operations that we have prepared for months to hit very hard."</p>

Watch: French President Macron shares look-back video of his ‘exceptional’ India visit

<p>Perhaps insecure due to the growing bonhomie between India and France after President Emmanuel Macron visited New Delhi as the guest of honour at the Republic Day parade, Chinese President Xi Jinping has offered to "break new ground" to give a fillip to China-France ties.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Macron's visit to India coincided with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France. Reflecting on the occasion, Xi released a statement and talked about joint development. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>“As today's world is once again at a critical crossroads, China and France should jointly open up a path of peace, security, prosperity and progress for human development.”</p>

<p>Xi added that it was an opportunity to "uphold fundamental principles, break new ground, build on past achievements, open up a new future, and make China-France comprehensive strategic partnership more solid and dynamic".</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Beijing had&nbsp;offered to step up French imports to the country.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We will continue to unleash consumer and investment market demand, continue to expand the import of high-quality products and services from France," he said and hoped that France too will provide Chinese companies with a fair, just and predictable business environment.</p>

<h2>Growing India-France ties</h2>

<p>Macron, the sixth French leader to attend India's Republic Day parade, has been a trusted ally of New Delhi. After India extended the invitation for the parade, following the alleged refusal by&nbsp;US President Biden, Macron immediately accepted the request.&nbsp;</p>

<p>During the trip, Macron held productive talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on various issues. The two countries unveiled&nbsp;an ambitious defence industrial roadmap to co-develop critical military hardware, besides firming up cooperation in the Indian Ocean and Indo-Pacific region.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The French prez also highlighted&nbsp;that the visa process would also be streamlined for students who had previously studied in the European nation, making it easier for them to return.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"India and France have so much to do together, now and in the future. We will achieve this with you, our young people, in exchange and cooperation, in trust, in friendship!" he added.&nbsp;</p>
