Maharaj also performed brilliantly in August. Against West Indies in the away Test series, Maharaj bagged 13 wickets, including 8/164 in the first Test and a five-for in the second innings of the second Test, ensuring a South African victory. His star performance saw him surpassing Hugh Tayfield to become South Africa's most successful Test spinner.

On the other hand, West Indies pacer Jayden Seales was as impactful during the South Africa Tests as any. He picked up 12 wickets at 18.08, including figures of 6/61 in the second Test. Though they eventually lost the match, his spell kept the hosts in the game.&nbsp;

<h2>Irish cricketers on the rise</h2>

Sri Lankan women’s batter Harshitha Samarawickrama was on the top of her game against Ireland during the white-ball series in August. After topping the runs chart in the shortest format, with scores of 86* and 65, Harshitha scored a stunning hundred (105) and 48* in the ODIs.

Orla Prendergast starred in the ODIs for Ireland, scoring 122* and picking valuable wickets during three One-Day games. Gaby Lewis played a match-winning knock of 119 off 75 balls in the second T20I, becoming the highest individual scorer for Ireland in this format.

Sri Lanka spinner Dunith Wellalage delivered one of the most memorable performances of the Asia Cup 2023 on September 12 &nbsp;against India. The left-arm bowler not only took a five-wicket haul but also scored 42 not out to give India a scare during the chase as well. The spinner also got the well-deserved Player of the Match award for his performance.

Wellalage, who took the wickets of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill and Hardik Pandya, called Kohli the number-one batsman and said he was happy to dismiss both Kohli and Rohit.

“For me, Virat Kohli is the No. 1 batsman. I am very happy to have got those two (Kohli and Rohit) big wickets. I trust my basics, and trust myself,” said Wellalage at the post-match press conference.

Speaking on his strategy during the game, he said: "The batters were set and India had got off to a fabulous start. I just tried to bowl wicket to wicket. Once we got those three wickets in three overs, we were able to put India under pressure.

“There was turn and when you put the ball in the right area, you could unsettle the batsmen. But I would have been happier with a win,” said Wellalage.

Chasing 214, Sri Lanka were six down for 99 before Wellalage shared a crucial 63-run partnership with Dhananjaya de Silva to revive Lankan fans' hope. While the dream of a win couldn't materialise, the partnership did give India a scare.

“I just tried to support him (de Silva). We didn’t want to take any risks. His plan was to try and get closer to India’s total,” Wellalage said.

Sri Lanka will now be playing against Pakistan on September 14 in a virtual semi-final for a place in the title clash against India and Wellalage is hopeful of a Lankan win.

“We have played four matches so far and we are happy that we have won three of them. The larger picture is that we have got one more game remaining.

“We still have a chance to make it to the finals, and hopefully we will pull it off,” he added.

Kuldeep then wrapped the tail, ending with figures of 43/4 while Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah scalped two wickets each for India. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 172 and will have a tough task in hand when they take on Pakistan.

He finished with the figures of 5/40 in 10 overs and became youngest bowler to take five-for for Sri Lanka at the age of 20 years and 246 days. Charitha Buddhika had held the record being youngest to claim a five-for for the island nation at the age of 21 years and 65 days.

Earlier, India had won the toss and decided to bat first. Beaming with confidence after a thumping win against Pakistan a day prior, Indian openers started cautiously for first five overs before letting loose. India were 65/0 in 10 overs but soon fell three down for 91.&nbsp;

Rahul and Ishan Kishan did add 63 runs for the fourth wicket but Wellalage struck once again to dismiss Rahul. The collapse started soon afterward as India were reduced to 197/9 in 47 overs before the rain arrived. India's batting lasted only a bit after the game restarted as they were folded for 213 runs.&nbsp;

For Sri Lanka, Charith Asalanka also took four wickets while skipper Dasun Shanaka chipped with one apart from Wellalage masterclass. For India, Rohit Sharma scored 53 runs while Rahul and Kishan contributed 39 and 33, respectively.

This is the third consecutive day India are playing cricket after their last game against Pakistan went into reserve day and got finished on Monday instead of Sunday. India had won the game emphatically by 228 runs after scoring 356/2 in their 50 overs and bowling out Pakistan for just 128.

The Super Four clash started on a positive note for the record champions of the continent, but it was all Wellalage and Charith Asalanka who dominated after the first powerplay to help Sri Lanka restrict India to a low total.

Monday's hero Virat Kohli had an off day as he was dismissed for three while Rohit Sharma completed 10,000 ODI runs before he departed.

To add insult to injury, Asalanka was also seen in top form as he wrapped the tail before rain stopped play in Colombo. The right-arm off-break bowler got the better of in-form Ishan Kishan on 33 while later dismissing Ravindra Jadeja for four. Interestingly, he was on a hat-trick when he got the better of Jasprit Bumrah (5) and Kuldeep Yadav (0) on back-to-back deliveries.
