<p>"I believe that a few years from now Gujarat will be the mecca of traditional medicine. It is unique and it is very important," Ghebreyesus told Press Trust of India at the G20 health ministers' meeting in Gujarat's state capital Gandhinagar in western India.</p>

<p>Earlier, India unveiled the 'Global Initiative on Digital Health, a WHO Managed Network' at Gandhinagar's Mahatma Mandir convention in Ghebreyesus' presence.</p>

<p>The WHO chief described the Global Initiative on Digital Health as an integrative step that will lead to equity in healthcare.</p>

<p>Ghebreyesus said that while Covid&nbsp;is no longer a global health emergency, it still remains a 'global health threat' and a new variant is already under the radar of many countries.</p>

<p>"Although COVID-19 is no longer a global health emergency, it remains a global health threat. WHO has recently classified a new variant with a large number of mutations. BA.2.86 variant is under monitoring at present, highlighting once again the need for all countries to maintain surveillance," he said.</p>

<h2><strong>Focus on ‘Pandemic Accord’: Dr Tedros</strong></h2>

<p>The WHO chief asked all the representatives of the countries present in Gandhinagar&nbsp;to accelerate the process of finalising the ‘Pandemic Accord’ so that it can be adopted in the World Health Assembly scheduled to be held next year.</p>

<p>"COVID-19 has taught us all an important lesson that when health is at risk everything is at risk. The world is learning the painful lessons of the pandemic," he added.</p>

<p>The Ethiopian civil war's tragedy hit home for World Health Organisation's head Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus this week. The WHO chief&nbsp;on Wednesday nearly cancelled an official event because he was "not in a good shape" after hearing&nbsp;that his uncle was "murdered" in&nbsp;the ongoing conflict in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. Dr Tedros has been a vocal critic of Ethiopian government's role in the conflict that according to the US estimates, has "killed hundreds of thousands" and displaced millions.</p>

<p>Earlier, the Ethiopian government opposed Tedros' second term as head of World Health Organisation and accused him of trying to procure arms and diplomatic backing for the rebel forces. Dr Tedros has denied the charges.</p>

The Ethiopian government and regional forces from Tigray agreed in November to cease hostilities last month in a major breakthrough.</p>

<p>The loss follows&nbsp;the killing of his cousin last year in Tigray when a church was blown up, he said, without giving further details.</p>

<p>However, troops from Eritrea, to the north, and forces from the neighbouring Ethiopian region of Amhara, to the south, who fought alongside Ethiopia's military in Tigray were not party to the ceasefire.</p>

<p>The zoonotic disease is endemic in humans in nine African countries but outbreaks have been reported in the past month in several other states -- mostly in Europe, and notably in Britain, Spain and Portugal.</p>

<p>"So far, no deaths have been reported in these countries. Cases have been reported mainly, but not only, among men who have sex with men.</p>

<p>"Some countries are now beginning to report cases of apparent community transmission, including some cases in women."</p>

<p>On Wednesday Greece reported first case of the disease. Local health authorities said that the patient, a man, had recently travelled to Portugal. He was said to have been in stable condition in a hospital.</p>

<p>The initial symptoms of monkeypox include a high fever, swollen lymph nodes and a blistery chickenpox-like rash.</p>

<p>WHO chief Dr Tedros said that is was especially concerned about the risk the virus poses to pregnant women and children. He said that emergence of monkeypox in countries it was not endemic in may be due undetected transmission for some time.</p>

<p>One case of monkeypox in a non-endemic country is considered an outbreak.</p>

<p>"The pandemic has exposed and exploited the inequalities of our world," he told journalists, warning that there now was "the real danger that the very tools that could help to end the pandemic -– vaccines –- may exacerbate those same inequalities."</p>

<p>"Vaccine nationalism might serve short-term political goals. But it’s ultimately short-sighted and self-defeating," he said.</p>

<p>The WHO co-leads the COVAX facility, which is working to procure vaccines and ensure doses are delivered equitably around the world.</p>

<p>The facility expects to begin delivering doses within a few weeks, and Tedros said the aim was for vaccination of health workers and older people to be underway in all countries within the first 100 days of 2021.</p>

<p>Tedros urged the world avoid repeating past mistakes, pointing to the HIV/AIDS crisis, where wealthy countries acquired life-saving medicines nearly a decade before they became affordable in poorer countries.</p>

<p>He also pointed to the H1N1 flu pandemic in 2009, when vaccines only reached poorer nations after the outbreak was over.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I don't think that is a good history. It is bad history," he said.</p>

<p>The WHO chief cautioned that "if we hoard vaccines, and if we are not sharing... there will be a catastrophic moral failure."</p>

<p>But in addition, he warned, "it keeps the pandemic burning, and...(will) slow global economic recovery."</p>
