US President Donald Trump said Saturday he was ready for a "historic" deal with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-senate-backs-massive-defense-bill-targets-china-sets-iran-vote-231163">China</a> as he kicked off a hotly awaited meeting with China's Xi Jinping, with the world watching to see if they can strike a deal over their long-running trade war.

After a first day dominated by public shows of bonhomie, all eyes at the G20 turned to a pivotal showdown between the two rivals that has huge implications for the global economy.

The meeting kicked off in a positive tone, with Trump saying,&nbsp;"It would be historic if we could do a fair trade deal... We are totally open to it."

For his part, Xi said that "dialogue" was better than confrontation after both sides had slapped tit-for-tat tariffs on each other's goods.

Even before Donald Trump sat down with his Chinese counterpart, the US president grabbed the headlines with a surprise tweet<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/donald-trump-offers-to-meet-north-koreas-kim-jong-un-at-dmz-this-weekend-231334"> inviting Kim Jong Un to meet for a handshake at the demilitarised zone</a> between North and South Korea.

The first tete-a-tete between the leaders of the world's top two economies since the last G20 in December has cast a long shadow over this year's gathering in Osaka, where differences over climate change have also been laid bare.

"With much of the fate of the global economy and the likely direction of markets hanging on the outcome of this pivotal Trump-Xi meeting, we think things will get worse before they get better," said ING Economics.

And the focus on bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit once again sparked doubts about the future of the gathering, experts said.

"The G20 was created as a forum for cooperation and the question may well be 'have we reached the point where it can no longer serve that purpose'," Thomas Bernes from the Centre for International Governance Innovation told AFP.

The US Supreme Court agreed on Friday to hear a challenge to President Donald Trump's attempt to shut down a program that shields hundreds of thousands of young undocumented immigrants from deportation.

The nation's highest court agreed to hear arguments in the case during its October term with a decision expected next year, at the height of the 2020 presidential campaign.

President Barack Obama signed an executive order in 2012 protecting the young immigrants known as "Dreamers" from deportation but Trump, who takes a hardline stance on immigration, moved to end the program after taking office.

The Supreme Court will rule on the legality of the Trump administration's effort to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program which extends protection to the estimated 700,000 "Dreamers."

Several lower courts have ruled previously in the politically sensitive case, allowing it to continue, and the nine-member Supreme Court, where conservatives hold a five to four majority, will have the final say.

Two of the conservative justices on the bench were appointed by Trump.

Many of the "Dreamers" were brought to the United States by their parents when they were children and have never lived anywhere else.

Trump ordered an end to the DACA program in September 2017 but temporarily extended the protections from deportation and the case has been tangled up in the courts since then.

Several Democratic presidential candidates pledged during two days of debates this week to provide protection to "Dreamers" if elected to the White House.

Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic speaker of the House of Representatives, also spoke out in favour of the "Dreamers."

"The Supreme Court must now uphold the rulings of lower courts across the country, which have determined that the Trump Administration's cruel decision to terminate DACA was illegal," Pelosi said in a statement.

"In rescinding DACA and its vital protections, the Trump Administration forced hundreds of thousands of brave young men and women to live under a cloud of fear and uncertainty," she said.

The number of migrants taken into custody at the US-Mexico border is expected to drop by 25 per cent in June, in part due to Mexican efforts to stem the flow, the acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security said Friday.

More than 144,000 undocumented migrants were seized at the southwestern US border in May, part of a surge in recent months.

But Kevin McAleenan, the acting DHS secretary, said steps were taken by Mexico -- under pressure from President Donald Trump -- to reduce the number of border-crossers appeared to be having an impact.

"These three weeks have demonstrated that they are, already," McAleenan told reporters. "That 25 per cent decrease in June is more than we've seen in past years."

McAleenan said the upcoming weeks will show exactly how effective the Mexican efforts have been.

"I think we're going to know, basically, by mid-July and certainly in the end of July if these efforts are sustained and having a significant impact," he said.

The acting DHS secretary said a reduction in the number of migrants crossing the border would have a positive impact on the conditions in which they are being held in the United States.

The DHS and Border Patrol have been under criticism lately over the conditions in which migrants, particularly children, are being held.

"I think we're going to see a continued reduction in the numbers which will alleviate some of the capacity constraints we've had," McAleenan said.

"That should present a much better situation at the border for the arriving migrants," he said.

Earlier this month, Trump rattled world markets and defied his advisers by threatening tariffs on all Mexican imports unless the country cracked down more on people pouring across the border into the United States.

US expects 25% drop in arrests on Mexico border in June

The Trump administration <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-imposes-sanctions-on-venezuelan-president-maduros-son-nicolasito-231308">turned up the pressure on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro</a> on Friday by targeting his son Nicolas "Nicolasito" Maduro with sanctions, the US Treasury Department said.

The new sanctions are the latest push in six months of efforts to oust Maduro, whose 2018 re-election has been deemed illegitimate by the United States and most Western nations.

Maduro's son has been involved in propaganda and censorship, has profited from Venezuelan mines, and helped pressure the military to keep humanitarian aid out of the country, the Treasury Department said.

"Maduro relies on his son Nicolasito and others close to his authoritarian regime to maintain a stranglehold on the economy and suppress the people of Venezuela," Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement.

"Treasury will continue to target complicit relatives of illegitimate regime insiders profiting off of Maduro's corruption," said Mnuchin, who is in Osaka, Japan, with President Donald Trump for a G20 summit.

The Venezuelan government called the new measures "illegal" and said they had the "dark aim" of trying to directly attack Maduro's family after the Trump administration's previous attempts to overthrow the socialist leader had failed.

The government "rejects the continued attacks by the Trump administration that seek to undermine, unsuccessfully, the spirit and will of a people determined to take the reins of their own destiny," it said in a statement.

Washington has thrown its support behind opposition leader Juan Guaido, the head of Venezuela's National Assembly, who invoked the country's constitution in January to declare himself interim president.

Maduro has retained the backing of the country's military and other institutions and calls Guaido a Washington puppet.

The new sanctions come as Trump holds a series of meetings with world leaders on the sidelines of the G20.

Trump raised the subject of Venezuela with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who backs Maduro, and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, a Guaido supporter, on the first day of the summit.

Asked whether momentum had been lost in efforts to oust Maduro, Trump told reporters: "No, not at all. Things take time."

Venezuela still in Trump's focus

On the second day of the G20, Trump is scheduled to speak with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and Chinese President Xi Jinping, both of whom support Maduro.

"Venezuela is going to come up at most of the conversations the president has out there. That's because the president has not lost focus on Venezuela," a senior US administration official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

More information will be released in the coming weeks about the younger Maduro's "direct role in corruption," the official said, declining to give further details.

Maduro appointed his son the head of the Corps of Inspectors of the Presidency and he is also a member of Venezuela's National Constituent Assembly, a pro-Maduro legislative super body created by the government in 2017 to override the opposition-controlled National Assembly.

The United States does not regard the National Constituent Assembly as legitimate and has previously imposed sanctions on other people involved in it.

The Treasury designation means that any assets held by the younger Maduro in the United States will be frozen - and will make it difficult for him to move money through the international banking system.

The senior administration official declined to comment on whether the younger Maduro has assets in the United States.

The Trump administration is continuing to work on sanctions for other individuals connected to Maduro, including magistrates on Venezuela's supreme court who have not yet been designated, the official said.

"We will continue to target corruption and squeeze the Maduro regime until it no longer has funds with which to prop itself up," the official said.
