<p>It is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication that is even sold without a prescription. The vast majority of OTC products include paracetamol with 500 mg of salt. Pain and fever were the main COVID-19 symptoms, hence the sale of all fever-relieving medications increased dramatically.</p>

<p><strong>What's behind the popularity?</strong></p>

<p>During the pandemic, sales of all paracetamol brands skyrocketed because it was thought to be safe to treat COVID-19-related fever and pain.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The income from paracetamol sales climbed by 138.42 per cent between the second quarters of 2020 and 2021, according to an Indian Express report citing market research firm AIOCD-AWACS. While companies like GlaxoSmithKline, the manufacturer of Crocin and Calpol, saw sales soar by 53% and 158.9%, respectively, during that time, Dolo-650 sales increased by a remarkable 289.6%.</p>

<p>According to pharmaceutical specialists, this is due to Micro Labs, the company that makes Dolo 650, overmarketing and decreased availability of rival paracetamol products. And now, allegations of corruption.</p>

<p><strong>How did they find a way around price control?</strong></p>

<p>Under the Necessary Commodities Act, some essential pharmaceuticals and their formulations are priced according to the Drugs Price Control Order (DPCO), and no business is allowed to sell drugs for more than that amount. The price of paracetamol was recently established by a National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority order at Rs 2.88 per tablet.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The price of a 500 mg Paracetamol tablet is currently regulated, but not the price of a 650 mg tablet. This is why businesses like Micro Labs could charge more for their medicine. Of course, this is a huge issue, and estimates suggest that the DPCO does not cover about 80% of medications.</p>

<p><strong>Can it cause harm?</strong></p>

<p>According to the doctors we spoke to, an adult's daily intake of paracetamol can range up to 2 grammes. Therefore, consuming 2-3 Dolos every day during fever would not necessarily be harmful. However, excessive paracetamol use has been related to serious liver damage. Dolo-650 is not recommended for people with persistent alcoholism, liver disease, or kidney disease.</p>

<p>A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and AS Bopanna was told by senior advocate Sanjay Parikh and advocate Aparna Bhat, appearing for petitioner 'Federation of Medical and Sales Representatives Association of India', that the market price of any tablet up to 500mg is regulated under price control mechanism of the government, but the price of drug above 500mg can be fixed by manufacturer pharma company.</p>

<p>The advocates told the court that the company tried to ensure higher profit margin by offering freebies to doctors to prescribe Dolo-650 tablets.</p>

<p>Parikh added that it is an "irrational dose combination" and said that he would like to bring more such facts to the knowledge of the court after a response is filed by the Centre.</p>

<p>The bench asked Additional Solicitor General KM Nataraj to file his response to the plea in ten days and gave one week time thereafter to Parikh to file his rejoinder.</p>

<p>The matter has been listed on September 29, 2022 for further hearing.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A counsel sought permission from the court to file an intervention on behalf of the pharma companies, which the court allowed saying it would like to hear them also on the issue.</p>

<p>Supreme Court of India, on March 11, had agreed to examine a plea that sought direction to Indian government for formulating a Uniform Code of Pharmaceutical Marketing Practices with a view to curb unethical practices of pharma companies and to ensure an effective monitoring mechanism, transparency, accountability as well as consequences for violations.</p>

<p>Parikh, the advocate appearing on behalf of the NGO, said that this was an important public interest issue. He made a reference to a recent judgment by the Supreme Court which had said that bribe-giver and bribe-taker both were at fault.</p>

<p>"The initial gleaning of the evidence has revealed that the group has been debiting in its books of account unallowable expenses on account of the distribution of freebies to the medical professionals under the head 'sales and promotion'," said the Indian I-T department's administrative body.</p>

<p>"During the course of the search operations, substantial incriminating evidence, in the form of documents and digital data, has been found and seized."</p>

<p>"Various other means of tax evasion, including inadequate allocation of research and development expenses to eligible units and inflated claim of weighted deduction under section 35 (2AB), have also been detected," the CBDT said.</p>

<p>Reportedly, the department also discovered instances of "violation" of the tax deduction at source (TDS) rules under section 194C of the I-T Act.</p>

<p>Dolo-650 is an oral tablet that is both an analgesic (used to treat pain) and an antipyretic (used to treat fever) that doctors and medical store owners frequently give to coronavirus patients to treat their typical symptoms of pain and fever.</p>
