DMK leader MK Stalin in Wednesday said that his party would continue its protest against Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit, till he is recalled by the the Centralernment.

Talking to reporters in Chennai, he said the Governor is acting as if there is President`s rule in the state, while protests are being held statewide to demand his recall.

DMK activists protested outside Raj Bhavan against the Governor, who had patted the cheek of a woman journalist, while Stalin termed the act "a shame" for the state.

Purohit on Tuesday patted the cheek of journalist Lakshmi Subramanian after the press conference to deny the allegations linking him to a sex scandal at Madurai Kamaraj University in the state.

Subramanian denounced Purohit`s conduct.

Journalists promptly drafted a letter informing the Governor that his conduct amounted to a non-bailable criminal offence.

On Wednesday, Purohit apologised to Subramanian, who tweeted that she accepts the apology but not the reason stated in Purohit`s letter - of the pat being appreciation for the question asked in the press meet.

Tamil Nadu: DMK to continue its protest till Governor is recalled by Centre

Amid fasting over the "washout" of the Budget session of Parliament, PM Modi today inaugurated the&nbsp;DefExpo at Mahabalipuram even as&nbsp;political parties staged protests&nbsp;over the Cauvery issue on Thursday.

Thamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi leader Velmurugan and other protesters were detained by police as they were protesting outside the airport when PM Modi arrived in Chennai.&nbsp;

The Cauvery issue has become the focal point of attention in the city even hitting the cricket IPL with the BCCI on Wednesday deciding to shift the venue for the Chennai matches due to the ongoing Cauvery agitation.

"Over 40 countries have sent their delegation to the event,"&nbsp;PM Modi said at the event, adding that India has one of the largest peacekeeping forces in the world.&nbsp;

"Commitment to peace is a commitment to our people,"&nbsp;the PM said while speaking at the event. "It is wonderful to see 500 firms at this Expo," the PM said.

"We are taking all steps to equip our forces,"&nbsp;he added.

"We have increased FDI in defence to 49 per cent,"&nbsp;Modi said at the event, adding that India is committed to building defence corridors.

"The defence corridors will be made in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu,"&nbsp;PM Modi&nbsp;informed. "Make in India will boost innovation," he said.

"We encourage defence-based startups, we want to transform not tinker," PM Modi declared.&nbsp;

Speaking at the DefExpo,&nbsp;Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said&nbsp;50 per cent of Expo manufacturers consisted of Indians, most of them small and medium industries.

According to the Defence Ministry, over 670 defence firms including 154 foreign manufacturers are participating in the exhibition of weapons and military hardware.

It is being attended by official delegations from over 47 countries including the US, the UK, Russia, Afghanistan and Sweden, Finland, Italy, Madagascar, Myanmar, Nepal, Portugal, Seychelles and Vietnam.

Heavy security measures have been put in&nbsp;place in the city over&nbsp;PM Modi's visit.&nbsp;There were reports of protests near the airport in Alandur area.

Earlier this week, actor-turned-politician Rajinikanth had called for IPL venue to be shifted out of Chennai in view of the ongoing Cauvery row and the plight of the farmers.

Rajinikanth had said&nbsp;he felt "embarrassed" that the IPL matches are being held in the city. The BCCI confirmed on Wednesday evening that Chennai will no longer host the IPL matches in the city as a result.

The central government was asked to set up the Cauvery Management Board within six weeks of the Supreme Court's order the government failed to do the same within the deadline that ended on March 29.

DMK leader A Raja has threatened the Centre and the state government with a warning that the protest for Cauvery Management Board (CMB) may snowball into the demand for separate state of Tamil Nadu.

Issuing a warning, he said the party's agitation will lead to a demand for separate state.&nbsp;

He said, "We want to implement the entire order in letter & spirit. We'll agitate, it'll lead to separate state. Before that, it's warning bell for central and state government, don't push the entire Tamil community to demand a separate state of Tamil Nadu".

Nam Tamizhar Katchi leader Seeman said they would not allow organisers to conduct IPL Matches in the state. He said they would lay siege and would not allow anyone to enter the stadium.

The state has been protesting for long&nbsp;against the government for not setting up the Cauvery Management Board despite the Supreme Court's direction.

The ruling AIADMK, led by Chief Minister K Palaniswamy and his deputy O Paneerselvam, had observed a hunger strike on April 4 while the DMK led opposition parties' had observed a state-wide bandh on Thursday.

Cauvery Management Board Protest: DMK threatens protest may snowball to demand for separate state

Two DMK workers allegedly made self-immolation bids in Coimbatore on Monday amid a state-wide stir for setting up Cauvery Management Board to implement the Supreme Court's verdict on water allocation among the riparian states.

Amid protests across Tamil Nadu, the Supreme Court Monday agreed to hear a contempt plea of the state against the Centre on April 9 on the Cauvery issue, while Governor Banwarilal Purohit left for Delhi.

According to sources, he left for the National capital on an official visit.

The Supreme Court bench, comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud said,"We understand Tamil Nadu's difficulty of not getting water. We will resolve the issue. List the matter for April 9."

Tamil Nadu had sought contempt action against the Centre for "failure" to frame the scheme for constituting the Cauvery Management Board and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee within six weeks, as directed by the apex court on February 16.

The pro-CMB stir, being spearheaded by DMK and a slew of pro-Tamil outfits, saw a slew of sit-ins and demonstrations by students and others at various places, including Chennai, Tiruvarur and Madurai.

According to police, over 1,000 persons were detained across the state in connection with protests and were released later in the day.

The two DMK activists, identified as P T Murugesan and Singai Sadashivam, doused themselves with kerosene and tried to set themselves ablaze at Coimbatore. They were however overpowered by policemen present at the spot and whisked away to a nearby police station.

PMK founder leader Dr S Ramadoss Monday announced his party's support for tomorrow's call for shutdown by farmers organisations and traders, besides DMK-led opposition parties' bandh on April 5. He said his party would support all Cauvery related protests.

Tuesday, the ruling AIADMK cadres will observe a fast, seeking constitution of the CMB.

Major Opposition affiliated trade unions, including LPF (DMK), and AITUC (CPI) meanwhile have decided to support the April 5 bandh.

Local DMK leaders led the protests across Tamil Nadu for immediate constitution of the CMB in keeping with party chief M K Stalin's statement Sunday that protests would continue till the Board was set up.

In Chennai, the demonstrations were held by DMK workers at several places, including Saidapet where former city Mayor M Subramanian led the stir.

Demonstrations were also held in Thanjavur,the hub of the Cauvery delta region, by cadres of various outfits, including DMK, Congress and the Left parties. Over a dozen pro-Tamil outfits, including DVK and Adi Tamizhar Katchi and cadres of Left parties held protests in Madurai.

DMK has asked its party functionaries to continue "democratic protests till April 4."

Hitting out at the BJP-led Centre for "trampling the rights of Tamil Nadu" on the Cauvery issue, it condemned the ruling AIADMK for "not mounting pressure on the Union government."

Rail blockades were staged at various places, including Coimbatore, Tiruchirappalli and Pudukottai by agitating cadres of opposition parties and pro-Tamil outfits.

Demonstrations were also held in front of Central government offices in several cities like Chennai, Erode and the neighbouring Puducherry.

In Puducherry, the demonstration was held by activists of Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam,a pro-Tamil outfit. Nearly 200 farmers and youths from various organisations staged a rail roko at Tirupur railway station and were removed by police.

Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi today wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to set up CMB and Cauvery Water Regulatory Committee.

During the protest in Chennai by the 'May 17 Movement,' a pro-Tamil outfit, some of its cadres allegedly hurled sandals at the signboard of "Shasthri Bhavan" housing several Central government offices, briefly triggering anxiety.

BJP Tamil Nadu unit president Tamilisai Soundararajan meanwhile blamed DMK for enacting "dramas" on the Cauvery issue.

The pro-CMB stir, being spearheaded by DMK and a slew of pro-Tamil outfits, saw a slew of sit-ins and demonstrations by students and others at various places, including Chennai, Tiruvarur and Madurai. According to police, over 1,000 persons were detained across the state in connection with protests and were released later in the day. The two DMK activists, identified as P T Murugesan and Singai Sadashivam, doused themselves with kerosene and tried to set themselves ablaze at Coimbatore. They were however overpowered by policemen present at the spot and whisked away to a nearby police station. PMK founder leader Dr S Ramadoss Monday announced his party's support for tomorrow's call for shutdown by farmers organisations and traders, besides DMK-led opposition parties' bandh on April 5. Protests engulf Tamil Nadu for Cauvery Board, Supreme Court to hear state's plea

Engulfed in a series of protests over the set up of the Cauvery Management Board, Tamil Nadu witnessed protest from the ruling AIADMK and opposition DMK parties today.

Following the protest, the state police detained TTV Dhinakaran over his attempt to gherao Trichy airport along with his supporters.

The opposition parties led by DMK stopped a train in Coimbatore demanding the formation of the board.

The deputy chief minister of the state, O Panneerselvam said that they will continue to stage protest until the Cauvery&nbsp;Management Board is formed.

The ruling party AIADMK also organised a statewide hunger strike.

The widespread protests in the state led&nbsp;to the disruption of&nbsp;the Lok Sabha proceedings for the 19th consecutive day.

DMK also asked the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) to join the protest and press for the constitution of a CMB. AIADMK has already announced to observe fast across Tamil Nadu on April 3 with an aim to urge the government to form the management board.

The six-week time frame directed by the Supreme Court to set up the CMB ended on March 26. The Tamil Nadu government stated that they would re-approach the apex court.

The Supreme Court, on February 16, pronounced its verdict on the dispute that involves Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

The Supreme Court, in its verdict on the dispute, allotted an additional 14.75 TMC of river water to Karnataka and reduced Tamil Nadu's share from 192 TMC to 177.25 TMC.&nbsp;

States like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala challenged the 2007 order of the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal (CWDT) and refused to share Cauvery of their need of water.&nbsp;

The no-confidence motions, moved by YSR Congress and the TDP, were the first in the nearly four-year rule of the BJP-led NDA alliance.

The parties moved the motion over their demand of&nbsp;special status for Andhra Pradesh, an issue which led the TDP to quit the ruling alliance on Friday.&nbsp;

Congress, TMC leader Mamata Banerjee, CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi had also raised their support for the no-confidence motion against NDA.

A day after the TDP moved a no-confidence motion against the BJP led NDA government, DMK working president MK Stalin from Tamil Nadu has issued a written statement to state chief minister Edapadi Palaniswamy urging him to support the no-confidence motion. The no-confidence motions, moved by YSR Congress and the TDP, were the first in the nearly four-year rule of the BJP-led NDA alliance. The parties moved the motion over their demand of special status for Andhra Pradesh, an issue which led the TDP to quit the ruling alliance on Friday. Congress, TMC leader Mamata Banerjee, CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi had also raised their support for the no-confidence motion against NDA.

The Tamil Nadu government is under attack from the opposition and commuters over the January 19 hike in fares in which the fares were increased up to 67%.

Protests were reported from various parts of the state condemning fare hike.

However, the government announced a partial rollback in which the fare was reduced by 1 rupees on Sunday

Under the revised structure, fares were reduced up to 20%;&nbsp; the minimum ticket of bus fare would be 4 rupees reduced from 5 rupees and the maximum fare would be 22 rupees reduced from 23 rupees.

State Transport Department issued a notification saying the reduced fares in all the eight State Transport Corporations (STCs) including the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) in Chennai would come into effect from Monday morning.

DMK leaders sought the removal of the portrait stating that the late AIADMK supremo was found guilty on corruption charges.

When the first bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Abdul Quddhose commenced proceedings on Monday at about 10.30 am, DMK&#39;s counsel P Wilson made an urgent mention and requested the court to take up the plea.

According to the petitioner, Jayalalithaa was convicted by a special court on graft charges. Later the same was set aside by the Karnataka high court while the Supreme Court found all the accused guilty of the charges. In view of her demise, appeals against Jayalalithaa were treated as abated, the petitioner said.

Members from the DMK have already filed a plea in the high court seeking removal of Jayalalithaa&#39;s photos. The plea also seeks to remove her name displayed or mentioned in government offices, buildings, public sector undertakings and government schemes.

The plea alleged that the Speaker, P Dhanapal,&nbsp;&quot;arbitrarily&quot; took a decision on February 10 to unveil a portrait of Jayalalithaa in the assembly hall in the presence of the chief minister and the deputy chief minister.

The plea called the speaker&#39;s decision unconstitutional, tainted with illegality, highly arbitrary and unreasonable.

&quot;It is antithetical to standards of morality and probity enshrined in our Constitution and expounded by the Supreme Court of India from time to time,&quot; the counsel said.

&quot;The intention of the then Speakers to display photographs.. inside the Assembly was to serve as an example and reminder to all the members of the august assembly that the elected representatives should live and conduct themselves like these leaders whose life is an example of the highest standards of public life,&quot; the petitioner submitted.

&quot;It could never have been the intention of the then speakers to hang portraits of convicts, culprits or persons convicted of offences involving moral turpitude like corruption,&quot; the petitioner said.

DMK moves HC after Jaya portrait unveiled in TN assembly

Former telecom minister <a href="http://www.wionews.com/topic/a-raja">Andimuthu Raja</a>, who was recently <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/2g-scam-entire-case-was-cooked-up-says-a-raja-27393">acquitted in the 2G spectrum scam case</a>, said Congress didn&#39;t not come to his rescue during the difficult times he faced during the trial.

&quot;Congress remained aloof from this matter to save the government. They should have come forward and said nothing is wrong,&quot; Raja said in an interview to WION on Thursday.

Raja was the telecom minister in the Congress-led UPA government from May 2007 to November 2009. He resigned in 2010 after the then Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Vionod Rai indicted the minister for not distributing the 2G spectrum in a transparent manner leading to a loss of Rs 1.76 lakh crore to the exchequer.

Raja hit back at the former CAG. &quot;Vinod Rai is a blatant liar. They wanted to train their guns only at me. No one came to hear my side of the story,&quot; the DMK leader said.

Explaining how he was acquitted in the 2G scam, Raja said the investigators could not corroborate the evidence. &quot;Whatever you accuse me of, you have to present evidence for that. But all the documents were in my favour, the investigators couldn&#39;t prove anything so I was acquitted,&quot; Raja said.

He also said that members of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh&#39;s Cabinet were not true to him. &quot;Those who failed in court wanted to use the Prime Minister&#39;s Office (PMO). He didn&#39;t even know about spectrum availability. Dr Singh remained silence because of the Supreme Court and media,&quot; Raja said.

&quot;There were variations within the Cabinet regarding 2G. Nobody in the government defended the policy of the government. Cut-off date was not Raja&#39;s brainchild. It was the brainchild of then secretary and officers. In fact I was against the cut-off date,&quot; he added.

The CBI, during the course of its investigation, had alleged that the decision to advance cut-off date for accepting the applications for grant of 2G spectrum licences was taken to &quot;favour&quot; Unitech - a charge which was never accepted by Raja.

The DMK leader also said that he will seek a ticket for 2019 Lok Sabha elections. &quot;I will always be part of politics,&quot; Raja said.

Raja was also grateful to his party chief M Karunandhi. &quot;Karunanidhi came to jail to console me.&quot;

Rejecting the charge, Stalin alleged it was the state ministers under the charge of Palaniswami and Panneerselvam who aided the Dhinakaran camp in distributing money to the voters.

Responding to reporters&#39;&nbsp;queries on the charge by AIADMK, he asserted that the DMK faced the poll only in &quot;alliance with democracy&quot;.

&quot;Hence this poll is not a loss for DMK. It is a huge defeat for the Election Commission,&quot; Stalin claimed.

The joint statement said the bypoll result showed how Stalin and Dhinakaran &quot;planned to defame&quot; party founder, the late MG Ramachandran and Jayalalithaa by &quot;joining hands to defeat&quot; Two leaves, the AIADMK&#39;s symbol.

&quot;People are amazed how DMK is pushed to a situation where it could not even get the primary votes it has in RK Nagar. At the same time, they are questioning how DMK can enter into a conspiracy with Dhinakaran to defame Amma,&quot; they added.

Stalin had entered into such a &quot;tacit understanding&quot; unmindful of his party&#39;s performance as his sole intention was to target the AIADMK government, they alleged.

Taking a swipe at Dhinakaran, the two leaders said he had earlier been expelled from the party by Jayalalithaa along with other relatives of her confidante VK Sasikala.

They also accused him of &quot;betraying&quot; Jayalalithaa even after her death by allegedly joining hands with DMK.

They cited Dhinakaran&#39;s response to the acquittal of DMK leaders Kanimozhi and A Raja, in the 2G spectrum allocation case on December 21, that he was happy for them as they hailed from Tamil Nadu.

On his party&#39;s performance, Ganesan said people had not not taken into considering the BJP&#39;s presence in the contest. This was a factor to be thought about, he added.

Senior AIADMK leader and Deputy Speaker in the Lok Sabha M Thambidurai said the result proved that DMK was not able to break the Jayalalithaa citadel and its campaign had no impact on the people.&nbsp;

2G case verdict: Justice prevails, says Kanimozhi

As a common citizen of India, I am surprised why everyone is talking about 2G scam especially when the world has advanced much ahead and now our neighbouring country has even tested 5G spectrum (despite not having any 5G enabled device made so far) after 3G and 4G.

&nbsp;

It was just a little scam of 1.76 lakh crores. Just 1.76 lakh crores. 28 billion dollars if we convert it into the international currency. And that too this was not the money of the government. The legendary team of A Raja and Party did not loot the government or any bank. It was just the hard-earned money of the taxpayer which they enjoyed.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

This money could have provided elementary education to almost 10 crore students for a year, but why worry? In India, we fight for petty causes despite being educated, prefer to send kids to madrasas instead of school, kill people for religion. So, do we really need education?

&nbsp;

With this money, 6 crore people could have been fed two meals for a year, but why worry? We have enough people in our country, few&nbsp;deaths from starvation do enrage us enough.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

With this money, we could have liquidated the debts of our farmers but why worry? If they don&rsquo;t commit suicide then how our politicians will encash this matter in the election? They will then be bereft of an issue. After all, we need our leaders like A Raja and Kanimozhi who know how to enjoy the tax payer&rsquo;s money.

&nbsp;

With this money, we could have set up at least 50 Industrial Parks and given employment to at least 50 Lakh people for a year.&nbsp; But why worry? If everyone is employed, then who will listen to these politicians and be fooled? After all, we need politicians too.&nbsp;

Even government is not sure of the figures. Comptroller and Auditor General gave a figure of $ 27 Billion. However, the CBI in its inquiry reduced the figure to about $ 5 Billion. I am sure that after so many investigations, the net loss in the final report would have been just a few hundred dollars, which Mr Raja and the party will be pleased to pay from their pocket.&nbsp;

Not only Mr Raja, the common taxpayer of the country would have also felt good as their loss becomes low now. So, there will be a feel-good situation everywhere.&nbsp;

Mr Raja benefitted many multinational telecom companies. So, what if they take their profits abroad? We, the Indians, have been known for sending our wealth abroad for so many centuries. Initially, Turks and Afghans came and took away the wealth, then Mughals and then Europeans. Even after the British left, Indians have shown their prosperity to the world by having the largest number of Swiss bank accounts. So, why make so much of fuss now?

Everybody played his cards well. The case took 6 years to reach a verdict from the local court. Anticipating the way Indian judicial system works, I can surely say that it will take at least 30 more years to get a final verdict from the Supreme Court. A Raja is 54 now. By the time court will send him to jail, god knows he will be alive or not.&nbsp;

His other team members are also in the same age bracket.

So, when we already know that there is nothing which we can achieve in this case, then why waste our time and money on prosecution and judicial expenditures.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

There have been, at least, few thousands scam since the independence. Is there even one case where the accused is prosecuted and punished? The answer is a clear no. So, why worry about this? The public always has very short memory. They even forgot our freedom fighters and many others who crafted modern India.&nbsp;

Let&rsquo;s have an exercise. Go to any metro town and ask any college going student about 20 personalities and let me know how many names they have heard-&nbsp; Dr Verghese Curien, Dr MS Swaminathan, Ashfaqulla Khan,&nbsp; RN Goenka, Rani Gaidinliu, Lachit Barfukan, Annie Besant, Badruddin Taiyabji, CR Das, Dadabhai Nauroji, Gopal Krishna Gokhle, Jamnalal Bajaj, KM Munshi, Khudiram Bose, Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan, Lala Hardayal, Ram Prasad Bismil, Ras Behari Bose, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and GD Birla.&nbsp;

The result will open your eyes. You can try yourself too, and give yourself a rating from 0 to 20. In a country where people tend to forget their leaders and torchbearers, I am sure they will forget all these scams too.

As far as the poor taxpayer is concerned, he was paying tax, is still paying tax and will continue to pay tax in future too. His life would also remain the same.

The travesty of the judgement on scams in India has stopped bothering us.

As a common citizen of India, I am surprised why everyone is talking about 2G scam especially when the world has advanced much ahead and now our neighbouring country has even tested 5G spectrum (despite not having any 5G enabled device made so far) after 3G and 4G. It was just a little scam of 1.76 lakh crores. Just 1.76 lakh crores. 28 billion dollars if we convert it into the international currency. And that too this was not the money of the government. The legendary team of A Raja and Party did not loot the government or any bank. It was just the hard-earned money of the taxpayer which they enjoyed. This money could have provided elementary education to almost 10 crore students for a year, but why worry? In India, we fight for petty causes despite being educated, prefer to send kids to madrasas instead of school, kill people for religion. So, do we really need education? With this money, 6 crore people could have been fed two meals for a year, but why worry? We have enough people in our country, few deaths from starvation do enrage us enough. With this money, we could have liquidated the debts of our farmers but why worry? If they don’t commit suicide then how our politicians will encash this matter in the election? They will then be bereft of an issue. After all, we need our leaders like A Raja and Kanimozhi who know how to enjoy the tax payer’s money. With this money, we could have set up at least 50 Industrial Parks and given employment to at least 50 Lakh people for a year. But why worry? If everyone is employed, then who will listen to these politicians and be fooled? After all, we need politicians too. Even government is not sure of the figures. Comptroller and Auditor General gave a figure of $ 27 Billion. However, the CBI in its inquiry reduced the figure to about $ 5 Billion.
