BRICS SUMMIT 2026: Delhi is gearing up to host foreign leaders at Bharat Mandapam on September 12 and 13, but the summit is expected to bring major traffic restrictions across the capital.

Delhi Traffic Police have begun rehearsals for foreign leaders and their motorcades, with restrictions covering more than 35 roads and 22 diversion points. Commuters in central, south and southwest Delhi could face diversions, temporary road closures and longer travel times.

Major routes including Sardar Patel Marg, Janpath, Ashoka Road, Mathura Road, Lodhi Road and Africa Avenue are among those affected by the traffic plan. The biggest disruption is expected as foreign leaders and delegations begin arriving around September 10, with restrictions potentially continuing until their departure around September 14.

Adding to the challenge, heavy rain has already caused waterlogging in parts of Delhi, including areas near Indira Gandhi International Airport, while further rain and thunderstorms are forecast around the summit period.

Speaking to WION’s Vikram Chandra on Friday, Gadkari said that the government is making new highways (expressways) around Delhi to divert the additional traffic coming from neighbouring states.

“Presently, road construction worth Rs 6,200 billion is being done in Delhi. Around 80 per cent of the work on the 30-km Dwarika expressway is completed. It is being built at a cost of Rs 100 billion. Another expressway, a 76-km six-lane urban extension road is being built at the cost of Rs 90 billion, and&nbsp;57 per cent of the work is completed,” he said.

It is expected that the new expressway will reduce travel time between the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway and the Delhi-Chandigarh highway to half an hour. The road will ensure a faster link for traffic, especially from Gurgaon, IGI airport, South and West Delhi, heading towards Chandigarh and beyond.

Gadkari added that the construction of new expressways will make sure that the pollution in the national capital Delhi will get reduced by 50 per cent by the end of 2024.

The minister said that these new expressways will “make sure that the pollution in Delhi is reduced by 50 per cent”.

On e-vehicles

The transport minister shared optimism on the growing appetite for electronic vehicles in India. He said that the government is supporting the domestic industry and encouraging them to focus on electric vehicles.

When asked about the lack of charging infrastructure in Indian highways, Gadkari pointed out that they are building “charging stations” on highways across the nation.

Talking about the discovery of 5.9 million tonnes of lithium deposits in Jammu and Kashmir, the minister said he hopes&nbsp;that they will be able to capitalise on the discovery and cut India’s import costs.&nbsp;He noted that India imports 1200 tonnes of lithium every year.

In a report on highlights of services on New Year&#39;s Eve released by the company, Uber noted that over 90,000 riders used UberPOOL to cut down on congestion during this busy night, with over 22,000 riders reported to be from Delhi, NCR, followed by Hyderabad and Bengaluru.

Further, a driver partner from Delhi, NCR completed 18 trips on this one night, making it the highest across the country, followed by one in India&#39;s IT hub, who completed 14 trips.

The highlights also revealed that at the stroke of midnight, close to 15,000 riders were in an Uber across India.

Uber records maximum trips from Delhi-NCR on New Year's Eve

In one of his first major initiatives since assuming the post of New Delhi&#39;s Lieutenant Governor (LG), Anil Baijal on Thursday ordered setting up of a special task force for decongesting the capital&#39;s roads and measures for easing traffic snarls.

The Lt Governor asked the Delhi Traffic Police and other stakeholders to set up an intelligent traffic management&nbsp;system in the city and identify critical bottlenecks, PTI reported.

&nbsp;He also directed concerned agencies to remove unauthorised parking and encroachments under flyovers and u-turns of roads.

Baijal also called for a new uniform parking policy strict action over speeding vehicles and use of mobile while driving, saying that no offenders should be spared.

The instructions were issued at a high-level meeting with senior officers of the city&#39;s traffic police, Transport Department, and administrative bodies including the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), Public Works Department (PWD) and the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure Centre.

The statement issued by the LG&#39;s office said: &quot;In the meeting, the LG directed to set up task forces with concerned stake holders for uniformity in decision making and focused efforts on ground. He also directed traffic police to identify critical bottleneck /congestion points besides taking measures to remove them. Unauthorised parking/encroachments under flyovers and u-turns should be removed 
and the area will be fenced and beautified.&quot;

Baijal also asked the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, NDMC, Transport Department to prepare &#39;Uniform Parking Policy&#39; for the city at the earliest, saying that municipal corporations will report to the land owning agency for enforcement in respect of violations.

Action should also be&nbsp;taken for procurement and installation of red light violation detection cameras and automatic number plate reader cameras at identified locations at the earliest, the LG&#39;s instructions stated.
