The company eliminated records for many of them from its internal record system, Mohawk claimed that as he included a memo sent by the Senate investigations subcommittee to its members. The report was made public Tuesday (Jun 18).&nbsp;

Mohawk alleged that he was told by his supervisors to hide the evidence from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).&nbsp;

He claimed that he even said he now faces termination for speaking up about the issue and voicing his concerns through the company's Speak Up programme.&nbsp;

The whistleblower claimed that a senior manager told him that his threats to go to the regulators over compliance issues made other employees feel afraid and threatened, and now he "fears for his personal safety".&nbsp;

This was Calhoun's first testimony since a January incident where a 737 MAX made an emergency landing due to a fuselage panel blowing out.

The hearing, an examination of "Boeing's Broken Safety Culture," followed an April session where a Boeing engineer spoke about being punished for raising safety concerns about the 787 Dreamliner and 777 models.&nbsp;

At the hearing, the senate committee revealed additional worker complaints, including a whistleblower's warning that Boeing's use of damaged or inadequate parts could "lead to a catastrophic event".&nbsp;

Senator Richard Blumenthal, who led the committee, stressed the need for a major overhaul in Boeing's safety culture and said that the company stands "at a moment of reckoning and an opportunity to change a broken safety culture."

There "is near overwhelming evidence… that prosecution should be pursued," he said, vowing to keep up oversight of the company.

Calhoun revealed that he was planning to step down at the end of 2024.

The aviation giant, which has been roiled by a nine-month crisis after the plane was grounded following two deadly crashes, described the new stance as reflective of its "unstinting commitment" to safety.

The company previously argued pilots would need only computer-based training, so the announcement was the first major shift in approach since Boeing replaced its chief executive in late December.

But requiring pilots to train on simulators is expected to delay the resumption of commercial flights because of the limited number of MAX simulators available.

Focus now turns to the US Federal Aviation Administration, which previously resisted calls by Canadian and European regulators for the additional pilot training.

The MAX has been grounded since mid-March following the second of the two fatal crashes that together claimed 346 lives.

Boeing and the FAA have drawn intense criticism for their handling of the crisis as well as the process for certifying the plane to fly.

"Safety is Boeing's top priority," the company's acting Chief Executive Greg Smith said in a statement.

"Public, customer and stakeholder confidence in the 737 MAX is critically important to us and with that focus Boeing has decided to recommend MAX simulator training combined with computer-based training for all pilots prior to returning the MAX safely to service."

An FAA spokesman said the agency will consider Boeing's advice during an upcoming meeting involving a board of US and foreign air carrier crews that will help inform the agency's official recommendation before it is opened for public comment.

"The FAA is following a thorough process, not a set timeline, to ensure that any design modifications to the 737 MAX are integrated with appropriate training and procedures," the FAA spokesman said.

Michel Merluzeau, an aviation expert at Air Insight Research, said requiring simulator training would extend the delay before flights resume, but the step was essentially inevitable.

"It's a common-sense decision," Merluzeau told AFP. "It's something that shows that they are being very careful and not taking any shortcuts to speed the MAX's return to service."

US Representative <a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-economy/united-states-lawmakers-will-press-boeing-ceo-on-day-two-of-testimony-258870">Peter DeFazio</a>, an Oregon Democrat who is leading a congressional probe of the MAX crashes, said simulator training was the right decision but "it's remarkable that it took two deadly crashes, numerous investigations and untold public pressure before Boeing arrived at this decision."

The debate over training requirements has loomed as an open question as Boeing worked on new software to address a problem with a flight handling system linked to both crashes.

The FAA also has raised additional concerns against a backdrop of intensifying public and congressional scrutiny.

Pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger III, who famously landed a damaged plane on the Hudson River in New York in 2009, forcefully endorsed simulator training in a July congressional hearing, saying "reading about it on an iPad is not even close to sufficient."

A Boeing spokesman said Tuesday there are currently 34 MAX simulators around the world, 26 owned by airline operators and eight owned by Boeing.

That is a fraction of the 387 planes already delivered and roughly 400 additional planes that have been built and stored since the regulators worldwide grounded the MAX in March.

One option that has been discussed would be to conduct training through an updated simulator for Boeing's 737 NG, a predecessor to the MAX.

Southwest Airlines, which has the most MAX planes in service, has three simulators in "various stages of FAA certification, and we expect to receive an additional three simulators in late 2020," a spokeswoman said.

Having insisted that simulator training was not necessary, Boeing had promised Southwest rebate of $1 million per-plane if simulator training was needed, a source told AFP last year.

An American Airlines spokesman said the carrier has one simulator, while United Airlines has one MAX simulator and three on order, a spokesman said.

Newly named Chief Executive David Calhoun, 62, was made Boeing's chairman two months ago, in the midst of the crisis that has rocked the company since two fatal crashes led to the grounding of its 737 MAX. It was not his first experience of navigating corporate upheaval.

Calhoun became chairman of the Caterpillar Inc board shortly after federal agents raided its headquarters in March 2017, headed a General Electric division that included airplane engines after the September&nbsp;11 attacks, and led media research company Nielsen's effort to go public. He has also been a longtime executive at Blackstone private equity group.

“Having seen him run GE's aviation business after 9/11, I know he can execute under pressure,” former GE Chief Executive Jeff Immelt told Reuters by email when asked about Calhoun, adding that Calhoun would restore customer trust in Boeing.

Calhoun, who has co-written a book on business, "How Companies Win," says being candid is part of being a leader, an approach which many critics say was absent from Boeing’s initially guarded approach to concerns about the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-economy/sales-of-grounded-boeing-737-max-gather-pace-at-dubai-airshow-263161">737 MAX</a>.

“The second you get into the office till the second you leave, every interaction is judged,” he said in a video published in 2014 by the Jack Welch Management Institute.

“You try to hide anything from everybody and I think your body language becomes perfectly apparent.”

Yet in his short time as Boeing chairman, Calhoun has shown his ability to work discreetly behind the scenes, as seen by his role in the departure of Kevin McAllister as chief executive of Boeing's placemaking arm in October. The removal was silent and swift, foreshadowing Muilenburg's ouster this past weekend.

Some insiders saw McAllister another GE veteran as a scapegoat for the MAX crisis. Others say he paid the price for distractions including widely publicized cracks in the company's older 737NG jets, which caught the board off guard. The 737 MAX was not impacted by the cracking issue.

The reckoning came at an informal board dinner in Texas led by Calhoun in late October. As directors wound up a two-day summit a day later, Calhoun and Muilenburg took McAllister aside and told him he was out, two people briefed on the meeting said.

In a sign that the board was already claiming a new voice under recently appointed chairman Calhoun, having split the CEO and chairman roles, the decisive dinner conversation that led to the shake-up took place without Muilenburg, the people said.

Boeing declined to comment on confidential board discussions.

McAllister and Muilenburg could not be reached.

Now, Calhoun must repair frayed relations with regulators, continue to manage a cash squeeze from the crisis and bring to market the new 777X jet at a time of tough regulatory scrutiny.

His experience on the Boeing board will allow Calhoun to "take the reins in short order without the need for a longer period of familiarization," said Timm Schulze-Melander, industrials specialist at European research house Redburn.

He also will have to face skeptics that Boeing can change, including Paul Njoroge, a Toronto-based investment professional, who lost his family in an <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/ethiopian-airlines-boeing-737-plane-crashes-on-way-to-kenya-with-149-passengers-on-board-202327">Ethiopia Airlines</a> crash on March 10.

"Boeing needs a revamp of its corporate governance. The board should be fired,” he said, adding of Calhoun, “I don't think he is going to change the culture of Boeing."

Others are less sure.

He is a "hard-nosed" leader who does not warm to dissent but who can inspire, said an executive who worked for him at Nielsen.

“(Boeing)&nbsp;might need someone as tough as Dave. I don't think he would be a good manager over a long period of time. As a crisis manager, he might be able to get it done,” the person said.
