Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has claimed on Monday (September 14) that the Congress government’s guarantee schemes in the state have encouraged other parts of India to come up with similar schemes, including the United States. Addressing the Congress office, Shivakumar stated that states like Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Bihar have copied the same schemes from Karnataka. In addition, he mentioned US President Donald Trump’s proposal announcing a $5,000 payment to American adults as the Congress government’s welfare model. "Now they copied us in Maharashtra, copied us in Madhya Pradesh, in Rajasthan, in Bihar, and now Trump is copying us," he said, referring to US President Donald Trump. "This is the strength of the Congress party. The entire world is watching our Constitution today," he added. Shivakumar's statement followed days after Trump promised to pay $5,000 to every American adult if Republicans retain control of both houses of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections. He announced it on September 9 during a Republican midterm convention rally in Dallas, Texas. Trump stated that if Republicans emerge victorious in the November 3 elections, ordinary Americans would "win" too, receiving a $5,000 payout he dubbed the "Trump dividend." While the payment appears to be targeted at American adults, Trump has yet to spell out the full eligibility criteria. Also read: India tests drone warfare at Pokhran as IAF launches first Dronathon
Shivakumar accused BJP of exploiting Hindutva
At the same event, Shivakumar accused the BJP of exploiting Hindutva for political gain and alleged that funds and materials contributed for the Ram Temple had been misappropriated. The Karnataka government approached AI company Anthropic on Thursday (August 8) to jointly develop industry-backed certification programmes to train up to two lakh people in artificial intelligence (AI) ahead of launching its proposed AI University. The proposal was put forward by CM D K Shivakumar during a meeting with an Anthropic delegation led by Michael Sellitto, Head of International Policy, asking the company to assist in designing the curriculum, create teaching materials and build an assessment framework for the certificate courses. Electronics, IT/BT and Home Minister Priyank Kharge, who arranged the meeting, stated that partnership with Anthropic will allow Karnataka to expand AI education far beyond what the company could accomplish alone. "Anthropic can probably reach 50,000 people by itself. But if it works with industry and the government, we can reach up to two lakh people. Together, we can show disruption at scale," he said. Also read: Will ordinary Indian users have to pay for UPI? You must've heard the song 'Young, Dumb & Broke'. Let us introduce you to its remix version ' Old, Criminal & Rich'. A recent report has revealed that a staggering 75 per cent of the ministers in the newly appointed cabinet in India's southern state of Karnataka have unresolved criminal cases pending against them and that a whopping 97 per cent of them are as rich as Richie Rich. The news comes after the Indian National Congress won the election in a landslide earlier this month.

In its analysis of the self-sworn affidavits of 32 of the 34 ministers including the chief minister, the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) found that 24 of the ministers have pending criminal cases against them out of which 22 per cent, or seven, have serious criminal cases.

The charges these ministers face, among various others, include offences such as participating in riots, wielding dangerous weapons, engaging in criminal intimidation, tampering with or destroying documents or electronic records to obstruct their use as evidence, and endangering the lives or safety of others.

Millionaires all around

A thorough examination of the minister's self-declared assets and liabilities revealed that an overwhelming majority (97 per cent) of them are millionaires. The average assets of the 32 ministers analysed are 1.19 billion rupees or USD 14.4 million.

The deputy chief minister of Karnataka, DK Shivakumar, holds the highest declared assets, valued at INR 14.13 billion or around USD 171 million.

In comparison, on the other end of the spectrum, with the lowest declared assets is Timmapur Ramappa Balappa from the Mudhol (SC) constituency who by his own declaration possesses assets amounting to INR 5.8 million or around USD 70,880.

Educational qualifications

The report also went through the millionaire ministers' educational qualifications. Six ministers, or about 19 per cent of the newly appointed cabinet, don't even have an undergraduate degree and have stated their educational qualification as being between 8th and 12th grade.

24 ministers, or 75 per cent, said they possess a graduate degree or higher. Additionally, two ministers declared that they are diploma holders.

An inclusive cabinet?

Interestingly, the new cabinet consists of only one woman, Laxmi R. Hebbalkar from the Belgaum constituency. She has declared assets worth over INR 130 million or USD 1.57 million and liabilities exceeding INR 50 million or USD 70,000, according to the ADR report.

Unsurprisingly, if we talk of age distribution, almost half (44 per cent) or 14 ministers of the Karnataka cabinet are aged between 61 and 80. The remaining 18 ministers, or 56 per cent, fall between the ages of 41 and 60.

In India, where about 65 per cent of the population is young, aged 35 or less, the mean age of Lok Sabha MPs for the last 20 years as per India Today's Data Intelligence Unit (DIU) has remained above 50.

Old, criminal, rich: Cabinet in India's Karnataka full of millionaire lawbreakers, reveals report

Following four days of high-level meetings, India’s Congress party seems to have established a consensus about who will be leading the party’s government in the Indian state of Karnataka. A Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting was held in Bengaluru Thursday evening in which it was decided that Siddaramaiah will become the state’s next chief minister and D K Shivakumar will serve as his deputy. Karnataka went into polls on May 10, and Congress party emerged victorious in the results declared on May 13.

Oath-taking ceremony to be held on May 20

Right one week after the results were declared on May 13, the oath-taking ceremony of the upcoming cabinet will be held on May 20. Several non-Congress CMs from other opposition parties are expected to attend the event, along with top national Congress leaders.

An official invitation has already been extended to Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin, Telangana CM K Chandrashekar Rao, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, former Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray, and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, as per a report by Times of India.

How did Congress overcome the leadership challenge in Karnataka?

Congress Legislature Party held in Bengaluru on May 14 failed to yield any result, which prompted the party to ask party chief Mallikarjun Kharge to make the tough decision. Then, Kharge appointed three observers to conduct a secret ballot and considered the views of every Congress MLA. Following the hectic process, the decision was made to choose Siddaramaiah as the next Congress state leader and the upcoming Chief Minister.

Siddaramaiah backed by Congress high command

It is believed that Siddaramaiah enjoys backing from senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi, along with general secretary KC Venugopal, state in-charge Randeep Surjewala and a host of other top leaders were seen scurrying to Kharge’s residence over the past two days to offer their suggestions and recommendations.
