A tropical cyclone expected to hit Western Australia on Saturday was forecast to bring ferocious winds and potentially dangerous storm tide, while much of the bushfire-battered east coast faced flood warnings due to torrential rains.

Severe tropical cyclone Damien was expected to make landfall on the west coast near Port Hedland, the world's largest iron ore port, on Saturday afternoon. The ports had been cleared of vessels ahead its arrival.

At 1 pm AWST, Damien was a Category 3 storm, expecting to bring winds with gusts up to 220 kilometres per hour near its centre when crossing the coast later on Saturday, the Bureau of Meteorology in Western Australia said.

Residents of some coastal areas were urged to seek shelter. "Residents between Dampier and Whim Creek, including Dampier and Karratha, are warned of the potential of a very dangerous storm tide as the cyclone centre crosses the coast," the agency said on its website.

"Tides are likely to rise significantly above the normal high tide mark with damaging waves and very dangerous flooding." Sparsely populated Western Australia was also facing several severe fire warnings with hot temperatures expected in most of the state.

After months of destructive wildfires that have razed millions of hectares of land, Australia has been hit in recent weeks by wild weather that has brought heavy downpours, hail storms and heatwaves.

New South Wales, an east coast state where nearly a third of Australia's population lives, saw some areas drenched by the heaviest rainfall in almost 20 years by Saturday, with severe weather and flash flood warnings.

"Potentially we haven't seen anything like this since the late 1990s," Bureau of Meteorology acting New South Wales manager Jane Golding said at a news conference.

There were still more than 40 active fires in New South Wales on Saturday, half of them yet to be contained, but fire services said the downpours, which are expected to continue into next week, may dampen them.

Cyclone approaches Western Australia with heavy winds, risk of storm tide

Nearly 2,000 people took refuge in emergency shelters and one man was missing after being swept away in floodwaters as Tropical Cyclone Sarai pounded Fiji on Saturday causing widespread damage.

National Disaster Management Office Director Vasiti Soko urged locals and the thousands of tourists in Fiji not to be reckless as Sarai lashed the Pacific island nation with heavy rain and destructive winds.

With wind gusts strengthening to 150 kilometres (93 miles) per hour during the day, Sarai destroyed houses and crops, brought down trees, cut power and caused considerable flooding in low-lying areas.

Thousands of holidaymakers were stranded with flights to and from Fiji either cancelled or rescheduled.

New Zealander Melonie Sheppard, who was holidaying on Mana Island to the west of mainland Fiji, described the situation as "scary" and said their resort was in lockdown.

"We're being hammered by intense winds and horizontal rains. The resort is providing packed meals and water direct to rooms when they can," she told the New Zealand Herald.

"Wind is howling and tree debris flying about, doors and windows shaking, huge waves rolling into shore. Water now leaking into some rooms -- it's a bit scary at times."

The Fiji government issued a statement warning of "destructive force winds with... coastal sea flooding to be expected."

The National Disaster Management Office said as of mid-morning on Saturday, 1,970 people had sought emergency shelter and there had been no reports of any injuries.

However, there were fears for the safety of a man swept away as he tried to cross a flooded river while another man, reported missing at sea, was rescued in his fibreglass dinghy by police.

Acting police commissioner Rusiate Tudravu said it was disappointing that some people had disregarded the weather warnings.

"People themselves are irresponsible... we issued a warning prior to the cyclone through the relevant authorities, yet people saw it fit for themselves during the cyclone to take such irresponsible actions," he said.

On its present track, the cyclone is forecast to pass adjacent to Fiji's main island Viti Levu, then across Fiji's southern islands before heading towards Tonga, which has activated its tropical cyclone warning centre with the storm expected to arrive late Sunday.

Cyclone 'Bulbul': Home Minister assures West Bengal government of all possible help

Cyclone Bulbul lashed Bangladesh overnight, killing six people and leaving relatives in a desperate search for 36 missing fishermen, though prompt evacuations saved many lives and the worst was over, officials said on Sunday.

Some 30 people were injured and around 6,000 homes were partially or fully damaged, authorities said.

Five of the six victims were killed by falling trees, including a 52-year old woman who had spent the night in a shelter. She returned home on Sunday and was killed when a tree crashed on her house. Another victim, a 60-year old fisherman, had refused to evacuate.

Two fishing boats have not yet returned and relatives have been unable to contact the men on board, said Anwar Uddin, a local public representative in the southern Bhola district.

No major damage was immediately reported in camps in southeast Bangladesh where hundreds of thousands of refugees from neighbouring Myanmar are living.

Some 2 million people from all of Bangladesh's 13 coastal districts huddled in about 5,558 shelters on Saturday night. Outside, wind speeds rose to between 100 and 120 km per hour and some low-lying coastal areas were flooded.

Wind speeds have now come down to between 70 and 80 kph, authorities said.

"It may take couple of days to get a normal situation," Enamur Rahman, the junior minister for disaster management and relief, told Reuters.

About 1,200 predominantly domestic tourists were stuck at the Saint Martin island in the Cox's Bazar district, Rahman said.

"All of them will be rescued," he said.

Cyclone Bulbul lashes Bangladesh, killing fisherman and homemaker

Bangladesh authorities have evacuated around 100,000 people from the country's low-lying coastal villages and islands with Cyclone Bulbul set to slam into the country later on Saturday, officials said.

The Meteorological Department has asked local authorities and two ports to raise their highest alert, as the cyclone is expected to unleash a storm surge as high as seven feet in coastal districts.

Bulbul, packing a maximum wind speed of 120 kilometres per hour, is on course to make landfall near the Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest, which straddles Bangladesh and part of eastern India and is home to the endangered Bengal tigers.

The cyclone is expected to hit the Bangladesh coast at around 8 pm (1400 GMT), disaster management secretary Shah Kamal told AFP, adding there are plans to evacuate some 1.5 million people before that.

Authorities have suspended a nationwide school test, cancelled the holidays of officials posted in coastal districts and called off a traditional fair that draws tens of thousands of people in the Sundarbans.

Operations at the country's two major ports, Mongla and Chittagong, have been suspended, Kamal said.

Some 55,000 volunteers have been mobilised to go door to door and alert people about the storm.

Bangladesh's low-lying coast, home to 30 million people, is regularly battered by powerful cyclones that leave a trail of devastation in their wake.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been killed over the last few decades in cyclones, whose frequency and intensity have increased.

Bangladesh has, however, improved its preparedness in recent years, cutting the number casualties since Cyclone Sidr killed more than 3,000 people in 2007.

In May this year, Fani became the most powerful storm to hit the country in five years, but just over a dozen people were killed.

Cyclone Bulbul likely to lash Odisha with heavy rains and strong winds

The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal which originated near the Andaman region has developed into cyclone ‘Bulbul’ and is centred over East Central Bay of Bengal. It is very likely to intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm and head to the coast of West Bengal and Bangladesh, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has said.

Puviarasan, Director of Area Cyclone Warning Centre said, “As the cyclone is moving towards the Bengal coast, fishermen are advised not to venture towards the Central Bay of Bengal region. Few interior districts of Tamil Nadu will receive rainfall due to convective activity between November 8 and 10 while Chennai weather will remain dry”.

Light-to-moderate rainfall has been predicted for Andaman and Nicobar islands and the northern Odisha coast as well as for the coastal districts of West Bengal.

Gale wind warnings for gusts ranging from 35kmph to 90kmph have been issued for the coasts of Odisha, West Bengal. Fishermen have been asked to suspend operations from November 8 at the coasts of Odisha-West Bengal. Those fishing far out in the sea have been advised to return to the coast.

Maha cyclone, which is currently a deep depression adjoining the northeast Arabian Sea around 100 kilometres south-southwest of the Veraval in Gujarat, is likely to move east-northeastwards and weaken into depression. Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will receive widespread rains in the next two days owing to a depression that lay off the Comorin area of the Indian Ocean. There is a possibility of it turning into a deep depression and form as a Cyclone, said Balachandran, South Zone Head of the Indian Meteorological Department in Chennai.

The depression brewing in the Comorin area of the Indian Ocean coincides with extremely severe cyclonic storm Kyarr in the Arabian Sea that is to turn into a very severe cyclonic storm by Wednesday night and a severe cyclonic storm by Thursday night, thus causing rough sea conditions in the region.

Over the last 24 hours, heavy to very heavy rainfall has occurred across 80 places in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Tiruttani in Tiruvallur district received the maximum of 19cm rainfall. Wednesday was declared as a rain holiday for schools and colleges in Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Theni, Virudhunagar, Vellore and Ramanathapuram.

Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have recorded 20 centimetres rainfall for October which is 14 per cent higher than the usual 17 centimetres for the period. While the ideal date for the onset of monsoon is generally October 20, this year it has made the onset 4 days in advance on the October 16.

“Currently the depression lay 220 kilometres South West of Thiruvananthapuram and over the next 24 hours it is expected to intensify into a deep depression and it could move North westwards towards Lakshadweep. If this depression gains strength and intensifies into a cyclone, it will be called ‘Maha’, as named by Oman,” Balachandran added.

Heavy rain is expected to lash 21 districts in Tamil Nadu including Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, Madurai, Trichy, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, besides delta district and those adjoining the Western Ghats.

Though the Southwest monsoon, that typically starts by June, caters to the needs of a large part of the country. The Northeast monsoon is crucial for Tamil Nadu as over 60 per cent of the coastal districts’ rainfall is brought in by the Northeast monsoon, while it brings around 40-50 per cent of the rainfall for the state’s interior districts.

Cyclone Kenneth crashed into the province of Cabo Delgado and flattened entire villages with winds of up to 280 kph (174 mph), killing around 45 people while Mozambique was still struggling to deal with the impact of Cyclone Idai, which hammered the country`s central region just six weeks earlier.

More than 1,000 people were killed across Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi when Cyclone Idai, the worst cyclone in decades, lashed its eastern Indian Ocean coast with heavy winds and rains in mid-March.
Mozambique needs $3.2 billion for post-cyclone reconstruction in the provinces of Sofala, Manica, Tete, Zambézia, Inhambane Nampula and Cabo Delgado.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres, called for a "generous response" from the international community and said "this is the time to translate into concrete gestures the solidarity with a country that has suffered one of the worst environmental disasters ever experienced in Africa," the UN said.

International donors pledged to contribute $1.2 billion to help rebuild areas and infrastructure destroyed by cyclones Kenneth and Idai in Mozambique, according to the United Nations, less than half the amount the government says is needed.

After cyclone Fani hit Odisha coast, a forest department's report brought to the light that around 20 lakh trees uprooted in the area, including the ecologically sensitive varieties of the trees.

"It will take a long time to revive the greenery of these areas just like before the cyclone. It is a challenging task on the part of the forest department not only in terms of spending money for the efforts but also to provide the manpower for the same. The plan should be directed in such a way so that old greenery in Bhubaneswar, Puri, Balukhad and other affected areas will come back," said Bijayshree Routray, Forest and Environment Minister Odisha.

"There has been a proposal for five years and more than 500 crores need to be spent in this regard. But, in effect, it is the question of how the funds will be distributed throughout the year. It also depends on many things - liveability of the saplings, planting and choosing the quality of trees. It will need massive plantation to get back the greenery that we have lost and it may take 20 years for the forest to look like what it was earlier," noted the forest department report.
