Croatia expects to meet the technical criteria for the border-free European Union’s Schengen zone by year-end and hopes to join it by 2020, a senior Interior Ministry official said on Tuesday.

Croatia is one of six European Union members not to be part of the passport-free Schengen zone, which area comprises 22 EU member states as well as four non-members — Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

“Our goal is to meet all the technical criteria by the end of this year. The European Commission must then assess if we’re ready to join which we hope it will do before the next elections for the European Parliament next May,” Terezija Gras, state secretary in the Interior Ministry, told Reuters in an interview.

Gras said Schengen zone membership would help to improve security in Croatia and the wider EU. The free movement of people would also benefit the economy, especially tourism which accounts for almost 20 per cent of Croatia’s gross domestic product, she said.

“Control over the EU’s external borders is the most demanding aspect of our preparations. We have already fully equipped our border with Serbia and now we’re doing it on the border with Bosnia,” Gras said.

Croatia is on the route taken by many migrants from the Middle East and central Asia who are trying to reach wealthier EU states. Some cross into Croatia from Bosnia undeclared.

By the end of September, the number of unauthorised migrants in Croatia had risen by more than 30 per cent from an estimated 4,800 people last year, police said this month. Most of them were from Afghanistan.

Once the European Commission gives its approval, member states must approve it politically. One potential stumbling block is Croatia’s border dispute with neighbouring Slovenia, which blocked Croatia’s EU bid in 2009 for the same reason.

“I believe a win-win solution is possible and we’re keen to work on that. We think as well that, for security reasons, it is also in Slovenia’s interest to have Croatia within the Schengen area,” Gras said.

Croatia’s conservative-led government also hopes that in 2020 it will also achieve entry to the European Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM-2), a waiting room for adopting the euro.

Croatia on course for Schengen zone entry in 2020: Government official

England wasted several gilt-edged chances as they were held to a 0-0 draw away to World Cup runners-up Croatia in a Nations League top-tier Group 4 clash behind closed doors on Friday.

Eric Dier and Harry Kane headed against the woodwork for the visitors while Marcus Rashford spurned two clear opportunities as England missed out on a first win in the new competition.

The result inside the near-deserted stadium left both sides with one point from two games behind runaway leaders Spain, who have six points and host England in Seville on Monday.

England manager Gareth Southgate was disappointed with the outcome, saying: "Second half we were by far the better team and if we had taken our chances we would have won the game.

"There would be more concern if we weren’t creating chances. We showed good endeavour and creative play. We have to keep getting in those situations."

Without any fans present as Croatia served the second game of a crowd ban for racist offences by their fans in Euro 2016 qualifying, the instructions from both benches echoed around the eerily empty ground in a tepid first half at the Rijeka stadium.

Midfielder Dier reflected on the first match England had ever played behind closed doors, although he noted the presence of a handful of England fans on a hill overlooking the ground.

"It was strange, the first experience of it for all of us," Dier told Sky Sports. "A couple of fans got up on the hill but once the game started it was in the back of our minds. We could easily hear the ones on the hill, they were the only ones here."

Revenge Mission

The game was built up by some English media as a chance for the visitors to avenge Croatia's 2-1 World Cup semi-final win in Russia in July but the game failed to produce any fireworks.

The only chance in the first half fell to Dier, who glanced his header against the far post after a Jordan Henderson corner.

Chants of 'God Save the Queen' from England supporters who had gathered outside the ground seemed to lift Gareth Southgate's side after the break but the woodwork and some dreadful finishing by Rashford denied them a goal.

Kane headed a Henderson free-kick against the bar before Manchester United forward Rashford served up a pair of astonishing misses in the space of two minutes.

He scuffed a feeble shot at Dominik Livakovic from eight metres when clear on goal and the keeper then denied him again with a superb reflex save from an almost identical position.

Croatia's Ivan Perisic forced a good save from Jordan Pickford with a stinging low shot and Ante Rebic, playing in an unfamiliar lone striker role, fired inches wide with a long-range effort for the revamped home side.

England's Jadon Sancho, Borussia Dortmund's exciting 18-year old winger, produced a darting run late on after coming off the bench to replace Raheem Sterling and make his international debut before the match fizzled out in the final few minutes.

Sancho became the second youngest England player to win his first cap in a competitive game, behind Manchester United's Duncan Edwards who died at the age of 21 as a result of the injuries he suffered in the Munich air crash of 1958.

Croatia head coach Zlatko Dalic has supported Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric as he bids to win The Best FIFA Men's Player award ahead of Juventus' Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool's Mohamed Salah.

Dalic hailed Modric's performance and said, "For me, he deserves everything this year. He was the best player in the Club World Cup, and the best player in the World Cup, also the best player in Europe."

Luka Modric, who helped Real Madrid to win the Champions League for a consecutive third season, also won the UEFA Player of the Year.

Since the introduction of UEFA Player of the Year award in 2011, Modric is only the third player other than Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to win the award.

The previous season was not less than a fairytale for Modric as he led his national team Croatia to the FIFA World Cup 2018 final and won Golden Ball award for being the World Cup's best player.

He was named man-of-the-match three times in Croatia's seven games in Russia.

Croatia international Luka Modric says that after winning multiple titles with Real Madrid the last challenge he faces is to help his country make a good showing in the 2018 World Cup, Croatian news agency Hina reported Monday.

"A great result with the national team is the only thing I still want to achieve," the midfielder said Sunday night as he accepted the award as best Croatian footballer for the sixth consecutive year, according to Hina.

He said that the squad's first objective is to make it out of the group stage into the round of 16, "since we haven't achieved that since 1998," the Croatia captain said.

"But I believe we will achieve it in Russia," Modric added.

The team left Zagreb early Monday for the town that will be their home during the World Cup tournament in Russia: Zelenogorsk, some 60 km (36 mi) from St. Petersburg.

Croatia are drawn in Group D, along with Argentina, Iceland, and Nigeria.

World Cup success would crown my career: Croatia's Luka Modric

Croatia's national soccer team have started the last phase of their build-up for the June 14-July 15 World Cup tournament in Russia this week.

Although the star-studded team, captained by Real Madrid's Luka Modric and featuring the likes of Barcelona's Ivan Rakitic, Juventus' Mario Mandzukic, and Liverpool's Dejan Lovren, suffered a 2-0 defeat last Sunday (June 3) in a friendly against Brazil at Anfield, the players are confident that this team might reach the knockout stage for the first time since the nation's tournament debut in 1998.

"Well, as I said, we will fight to the end. We have quality, we have experience, we just need to show that on the pitch," Lovren told reporters in Rijeka on Tuesday (June 5).

He was one of two Croatians who played the Champions League final last month, the other being Modric, who won his fourth title with Real Madrid in Europe's top club competition.

But Lovren added that an exhausting season behind them is not a problem, as playing in the World Cup for one's national team is an experience any player dreams of.

This will be Croatia's fifth appearance in the tournament, and even though they were a surprise of the tournament in 1998 when they finished third, they failed to progress out of the group stage in 2002, 2006, and 2014.

Manager Zlatko Dalic, who took over the team last October, had announced on Monday (June 4) the final 23-man squad that he would take to Russia, dropping Club Brugge defender Matej Mitrovic for lack of fitness and picking Red Bull Salzburg's young Duje Caleta-Car instead.

After their return from Liverpool, the Croatian squad will continue training in the Adriatic city of Rijeka before leaving for the eastern city of Osijek to play Senegal in a friendly on Friday (June 8).

The match is meant to prepare them for their opening World Cup match against Nigeria on June 16 in Kaliningrad, before facing Argentina on June 21 in Nizhny Novgorod and Iceland on June 26 in Rostov-on-Don.

Croatia's Lovren says the team will 'fight to the end' in the World Cup

Slovenia faces tense political wrangling Monday after the party of veteran leader Janez Jansa, who invoked the spectre of a migrant invasion on the campaign trail, came out on top in elections but fell far short of a majority.

With virtually all the votes counted, Jansa's SDS has secured just under 25 per cent -- giving it 25 seats in the 90-seat assembly -- and the "anti-establishment" LMS party of comedian-turned-politician Marjan Sarec has placed second with 12.7 per cent and 13 seats, the State Election Commission said.

During the campaign, Jansa made common cause with fellow right-wing firebrand Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and effectively evoked memories of more than 500,000 migrants who crossed Slovenia in late 2015 and early 2016 -- although all except a handful of them continued on to northern Europe.

In a televised statement on Sunday evening, delivered with little triumphalism, the 59-year-old Jansa said his Slovenian Democratic Party's "door for talks and coalitions is open" to all other parties.

"We are ready to start serious talks based on the programme we have been working hard on," he said.

He reiterated his anti-migrant position saying migration was "the most serious challenge according to most Europeans".

The only party which has so far said it would work with Jansa, the centre-right Nova Slovenija, has won just 7.1 per cent and seven seats, leaving the two parties short of the 46 needed for a majority.

That leaves the second place LMS party potentially with a crucial role to play.

Speaking to the POP TV station after polls closed, Sarec said he was "very happy" with the results, hinting that it could give him the opportunity to band with other parties to keep Jansa out of power.

During the campaign, Sarec said that Jansa's anti-immigration rhetoric and his appearances with Orban "crossed all red lines".

On Sunday evening Sarec repeated his opposition to working with Jansa, saying: "We have said it so many times in public that we would not be trustworthy if we did."

Sarec had been criticised for his vague platform during the campaign but recently told AFP his party "has many things in common with (French President) Emmanuel Macron's position, a sensible, centrist orientation".

The centre-left Social Democrats have finished in third place on 9.9 per cent followed by the SMC party of outgoing prime minister Miro Cerar on 9.7 per cent and the left-wing Levica party with 9.3 per cent.

Early elections were called in March after Cerar threw in the towel following months of public-sector strikes and internal wrangling within his coalition, with the last straw coming when a supreme court verdict on a flagship infrastructure project went against the government.

On Sunday Cerar told POP TV that the "results show that we (SMC) remain an important player on the political stage and we will continue fulfilling our role with responsibility".

Just under 52 per cent of the 1.7 million Slovenians eligible to vote turned out.

Jansa's political career stretches back to the country's struggle for independence from Yugoslavia and has already seen its fair share of drama. In 2013 he was forced to step down from the second term as prime minister over a corruption scandal and ran in the 2014 elections from jail -- the conviction was later overturned.

In this campaign, he promised to tackle the thorny issues of healthcare reform and disputes with neighbour Croatia, as well as promising tax cuts.

But it was his combative personality, strident anti-immigration rhetoric and alliance with Orban that dominated the closing stages of the campaign.

Like right-wing populists elsewhere he has adopted a feisty presence on Twitter and has used it to defend his alliance with Orban.

"Thanks to its (migration) policy, Hungary is a safe country while Belgium, due to its wrong policy, isn't," read a recent tweet from Jansa, who first served as prime minister from 2004-08.

Last month Orban said a SDS victory "would ensure the survival of the Slovenian people".

According to Slovenian media reports, Jansa's media campaign was also boosted by investments totalling some two million euros ($2.3 million) from Hungarian media companies in a TV station and newspaper co-owned by SDS.

For the first time in over a decade, the elections took place against a backdrop of strong economic growth rather than financial crisis or recession.

But Cerar's government did not reap any political benefit from the turnaround, with his rivals focusing on growing hospital waiting lists and demands for higher pensions and wages and a better business environment.

Analysts say that in the near future political instability may well persist, whether under a right-wing, Jansa-led government or one from the centre-left.

Brazil star Neymar said he suffered a lot during a three-month injury lay-off after making a goalscoring comeback in his side's 2-0 win over Croatia at Anfield on Sunday (June 3).

The PSG forward came on at Anfield as a second-half substitute and made a swift impression with a superbly taken opener in the 69th minute as the five-time World Cup winners warmed-up for this month's tournament in Russia in style.

Liverpool's Roberto Firmino wrapped up the win in stoppage time.

Neymar, the world's most expensive player, has been sidelined since February 25, when he fractured a metatarsal and sprained his ankle playing for the French champions in a Ligue 1 match against Marseille.

"I have a lot of respect for Romario, Zico, Ronaldo, Pele because they are my idols. The statistics are just numbers. I'm happy to help the team, scoring goals for the national team. I don't want to be better than them, everyone has their own story, everybody knows how important they were for the national team, for now I'm just really happy for the goals," said Neymar Jr.

Wearing the number 10 shirt, made famous by Pele, Neymar's popularity soared after he led Brazil to their first Olympic gold medal win in Rio in 2014.

He became the world's most expensive footballer when he signed for PSG from Barcelona for 222 million euros ($264 million) last August.

The Selecao play their final warm-up match against Austria in Vienna on June 10, before heading to Russia.

Brazil are in World Cup Group E with Switzerland, Serbia and Costa Rica and kick off their campaign against the Swiss on June 17.

Watch: Don't want to be better than Zico, Pele, says Brazil's Neymar

Brazil star Neymar made a stunning return from injury with a superb goal in their 2-0 friendly victory over Croatia on Sunday.

Just 98 days after suffering an injury he feared would keep him out of the upcoming World Cup in Russia, Neymar was back with a bang at Anfield.&nbsp

The Paris Saint-Germain forward appeared as a half-time replacement for Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho as the Selecao stepped up their World Cup preparations.

And Neymar needed just 23 minutes to prove how important he is to Brazil's hopes of a sixth world title.

Receiving a pass from Philippe Coutinho, Neymar cut into the area, beating Sime Vrsaljko and Duje Caleta-Car with impressive close control and dribbling, before burying a shot into the roof of the goal, via the crossbar, from the edge of the six-yard area.

Neymar ran behind the goal, in front of Anfield's legendary Kop End, and punched the air in obvious delight as he was mobbed by team-mates.

The sublime strike leaves Neymar on 54 goals for his national team, one behind Romario, who is third on the country's all-time list, and with only Pele and Ronaldo ahead of him in the Brazil record books.

Liverpool's Roberto Firmino, on his home ground, completed the victory in stoppage time when he controlled a through ball on his chest and calmly beat the advancing keeper with a delicate lob.

Neymar, the world's most expensive player following his blockbuster move from Barcelona last year, had been sidelined since the end of February when he fractured his foot playing for PSG in a league victory against Marseille.

He sprained his ankle and fractured his fifth metatarsal, requiring an operation which had left the 26-year-old facing a battle to be fit in time for Brazil's opening World Cup match with Switzerland in Rostov-on-Don on June 17.

Biggest challenge

Neymar had spoken last month of his concerns about winning that race and described his rehabilitation as the biggest challenge of his career.

He also sat out training with the national team at Tottenham's London base on Thursday as a precaution.

But Brazil coach Tite had announced his intention to use Neymar against Croatia, with the Brazilians having just one more warm-up game - against Austria in Vienna on June 10 - in which his asset can gain much-needed game-time.

True to his word, Tite brought on Neymar at the interval and he appeared comfortable, steering an early shot, from a wide angle on the edge of the area, directly at goalkeeper Danijel Subasic who saved well.

It was a notable afternoon also for former Liverpool striker Coutinho, who made his first appearance at Anfield since his transfer to Barcelona in January, and received a smattering of boos from some of his old club's supporters.

He formed part of a potent three-man forward line that also featured Chelsea's Willian and Manchester City's Gabriel Jesus, who was named captain for the day, the 15th player to wear the armband under the reign of manager Tite.

Despite the looming spectre of the World Cup, now less than two weeks away, the game proved a physical one.

Croatia's Andrej Kramaric and Ivan Perisic were both cautioned by English referee Michael Oliver in the first half, along with Brazilian Fernandinho whose high-footed challenge left Vrsaljko needing a large bandage to a head wound.

Neymar's introduction at the start of the second half drew an enthusiastic reaction, from the Anfield crowd and his team-mates alike.

He joined Jesus and Willian in attack, with Coutinho dropping into the midfield place vacated by Fernandinho.&nbsp

Brazil instantly appeared more threatening, with the PSG man linking up quickly with Jesus.&nbsp

Before Neymar's brilliant opener, Croatia might have struck first when Ante Rebic's header forced a fine save from Alisson.

Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic said Monday he was worried about the impact of the false testimony charges against captain Luka Modric on his performance less than four months before the World Cup.

Croatian prosecutors charged the Real Madrid midfielder last week with giving false evidence during the multi-million-euro corruption trial of former Dinamo Zagreb boss Zdravko Mamic in Croatia.

The offence carries a maximum penalty of up to five years in jail.

"I cannot interfere in what is going on but it certainly worries me," Dalic told reporters when asked whether he feared the charges could affect Modric's performance.

"But knowing Luka and his character... I belive that he will stoically endure all this.

Modric's indictment has yet to be approved by a court and the 32-year-old is currently not threatened with arrest.

Mamic is accused, along with three other people, of abuse of power and graft that cost Dinamo, the former Croatian champions, more than 15 million euros ($18.4 million), and the state 1.5 million euros.

Cash was allegedly embezzled through fictitious deals related to player transfers. Modric testified last June over the details of his 2008 transfer from Dinamo to Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur.

From there he joined Real Madrid in 2012.

Modric has shaken off a thigh injury and travelled with the Madrid squad to France for Tuesday's second-leg last-16 tie against Paris Saint-Germain.

He is considered the biggest star Croatia have had since 1998 when they surprised the football world by reaching the World Cup semi-finals before losing to eventual winners France.

Croatia plays in the World Cup Group D along with Argentina, Iceland and Nigeria.

Croatia coach worried over Modric charges

Australian Open champion Roger Federer is set to continue defying Father Time after announcing he will return to defend his title next year, the Swiss said on Monday.

The 36-year-old notched up his 20th grand slam title and sixth at Melbourne Park on Sunday with a 6-2 6-7(5) 6-3 3-6 6-1 victory over Croatia`s Marin Cilic, but initially forgot to say whether or not he planned to defend the title.

"Yeah, I`d love to come back. I know I forgot to say that after the match," a bleary-eyed Federer told reporters on Monday. "But I hope I come back again next year."

Federer equalled the record of six Australian Open men`s titles, held by Novak Djokovic and Roy Emerson, and emulated Ken Rosewall`s feat of claiming three grand slam titles after the age of 35.
His longevity has in part been put down to the careful management of his playing schedule.

Despite being fully fit, he skipped the entire claycourt season last year to concentrate on Wimbledon, a decision that paid off with his eighth title on the southwest London grass courts.

He reiterated on Monday that he would continue to manage his schedule tightly and despite being within sight of the world`s top ranking, a decision on whether or not his next tournament would be in Dubai in late February had yet to be made.

"We were in talks with them (Dubai organisers) but when the (Australian Open) tournament started, I just said `look, if it`s okay, I`d like to decide after the tournament`," he said.

"That`s an ideal scenario for me. After the tournament, I`ll know how I feel... did I come out injured or not?

"So now we know what the situation is.

"I also have to decide on the claycourt season so all these things are kind of interlinked.

"But it`s possible I`ll play something, but it`s also possible that maybe I just don`t play anything (for a while)."

MORE SURREAL

Federer said he would make the decision about his schedule after spending some time with family at home in Switzerland, where he hoped the fact he had won the Australian Open title again would finally sink in.

"This year seems more surreal, I can`t believe I was able to defend my title after all these years, that I could do it again," he said. "To reach number 20, number six here, it`s just a lot trying to take it in.

"Last year was a lot more straightforward, just disbelief that I won and there I was waking up with the trophy.

"But, I don`t know, this year feels more surreal. I can`t believe that I was able to defend my title, that after all these years I could do it again.

"It`s super special, one of the great moments in my career, and maybe this one is going to take longer to sink in."

Roger Federer planning Melbourne return in 2019

According to the preliminary results of Croatia's elections on Sunday, the country looked set for a lengthy coalition horse-trading after voters declined to bring in a clear majority.

Less than a year ago, within five months in power, the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ)-led coalition government had broken down owing to a conflict of interest scandal. This is the second ballot which may lead to another coalition.

Early today, the 60 per cent votes counted pointed to HDZ winning over 61 seats while opposition Social Democrats (SDP) having 54. The centre-right party Most (the Bridge) stood third with 13 seats.

Securing a majority in the 151-seat parliament may be difficult for HDZ.

A low voter turnout indicated that the Croatians had lost interest in the voting process following a year of political deadlock which blocked reforms.

The economy needs to emerge from a six-year recession, with an unemployment rate of 13 per cent, public debt up to 85 per cent of GDP and deficient investment climate.

The previous coalition made a significant shift to the right, attacking the Serbs and putting restrictions on the media which further strained its ties with Serbia.

However, the HDZ is now banking on Andrej Plenkovic, a more moderate leader who could gain support from the Serbs, AFP noted.

Former member of the European parliament Plenkovic vowed to move from extremism and populism to the center-right.

"I'm certain that we are the party that will have the privilege to form the next stable Croatian government," Plenkovic said today.

Former prime minister Zoran Milanovic and Plenkovic's rival, however, said, "It is too early to call the result."

As per the 60 per cent votes counted, HDZ had 61 seats, while opposition SDP had 54; centre-right party Most came third with 13 seats

Former prime minister Zoran Milanovic and Plenkovic's rival, however, said, "It is too early to call the result." He also emphasised the need for a stable government, calling the previous government an "unstable and destructive one." (WION with inputs from agencies)

Conservatives take lead in Croatia's election

A close-range header from Portugal substitute Ricardo Quaresma secured a 1-0 win over Croatia after the game burst into life late in extra time on Saturday and set up a Euro 2016 quarter-final against Poland next week.

Quaresma struck three minutes from the end of the extra period after a Cristiano Ronaldo shot was saved brilliantly by Danijel Subasic to settle the tie just a minute after Croatia's Ivan Perisic had hit the post with a header.

Croatia almost snatched an equaliser at the death but Domagoj Vida hooked the ball agonisingly wide.

Portugal coach Fernando Santos said: "Both teams were here expecting to win every match, all the way to the final. This was a final. We won, and when you win you're lucky. Sometimes you don't win and you're unlucky. Today, we were the lucky ones."

Croatia manager Ante Cacic added: "We expected Portugal to counter and we were playing really well for 120 minutes, controlling the match, not conceding any chances except the last one that was our mistake and we were punished for that."

There was some lovely one-touch play from both sides but plenty of passes also went astray in a tense, cagey last 16 game in which neither side managed to register a shot on target until Ronaldo's late effort led to the winning goal.

Croatia were on top for most of the first half but Portugal had the first chance when Pepe headed Raphael Guerreiro's free kick over the bar after Ronaldo was tripped by Perisic.

Perisic, who had a patch of his hair dyed to match the red-and-white checked pattern of his shirt, then cut in from the right but he dragged his shot outside the near post.

Luka Modric and Mario Mandzukic returned from injury for Croatia, with Mandzukic spurning an excellent first-half chance when he headed Dario Srna's corner wide of the target.

With Mandzukic on his own up front and Nani and Ronaldo shackled, neither side could break the deadlock and a smattering of boos and whistles were heard at the halftime whistle.

Wasteful Finishing

Croatia continued to dominate possession after the break, but their wasteful finishing continued as Marcelo Brozovic narrowly failed to connect with Ivan Strinic's cross and then followed up by blazing over from the resulting corner.

Substitute Renato Sanches registered Portugal's first shot of the second half when he broke forward and played a one-two with Joao Mario but steered the ball wide of the target.

Croatia centre-back Vida then had a glorious chance to give his side the lead on the hour but headed wide with the goal at his mercy and Mandzukic lurking behind him.

Earning his 100th cap, Nani had a penalty appeal turned down when he went sprawling in the box under pressure from Strinic.

Ronaldo did not fare much better and, despite occasional flashes of skill, he was kept quiet for most of the game.

The match finished scoreless and went into extra time with Nikola Kalinic, who replaced Mandzukic, blasting a shot wide halfway through the first period.

Croatia still looked livelier and Vida was frustrated again as he headed another corner just over with Portugal keeper Rui Patricio stranded after coming out for the cross.

Perisic flashed the ball across the goal and then saw a header come back off the post before Portugal countered and Ronaldo's shot was parried into the path of Quaresma who scored.

Croatia poured forward in search of an equaliser and Vida made it a hat-trick of misses as he hooked the ball wide leaving Portugal to go through to face Poland in Marseille on Thursday.

Quaresma late goal takes Portugal into Euro quarters

Jack Sock rallied to stun Marin Cilic 4-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 on Friday and put the United States on the road to a 2-0 lead over Croatia in their Davis Cup World Group quarter-final tie.

The triumph for the 26th-ranked Sock over world number 12 Cilic, the 2014 US Open champion, was followed by American John Isner's 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Borna Coric.

The formidable doubles duo of Bob and Mike Bryan can clinch the best-of-five match tie on the outdoor hardcourt at Tualtin Hills Tennis Club in Portland, Oregon, today.

Croatians Ivan Dodig and Marin Draganja are slated to take on the brothers, trying to push things to the reverse singles on Sunday.

Sock fired 17 aces against Cilic, who came into the tie trying to put behind him a five-set quarter-final loss to Roger Federer at Wimbledon.

But having forced a decisive fifth set, the American surrendered an early break that appeared to set Cilic on his way.

Sock, however, broke back in the fifth game, and while he couldn't convert three break points in the seventh, he gained the last break he needed in the ninth, when Cilic sent a high backhand volley wide.

"A little bit disappointing with that, just to lose that opportunity of getting that lead in the fifth set," Cilic said. "When I gave him a chance to come back I felt that he started to play also really well."

Sock got a little shaky serving it out, double-faulting twice before surviving two break points to seal the match after three hours and 13 minutes.

"I haven't played a ton of five-setters in my career," said Sock, who was playing his first Davis Cup match on home soil.

"Haven't come back from two sets to love down. To do that today, in front of the home crowd for the team, it feels extra special today."

Isner, ranked 16th in the world, fired 23 aces and fended off all eight break points he faced in a match lasting just under two hours.

Having withstood 54th-ranked Coric's early assault on his serve, which included break points in six of Isner's first seven service games, Isner broke the Croatian in the final game of each of the first two sets to take a comfortable lead.

After breaking to lead 3-1 in the third, Isner stayed the course, finishing off the match with a final ace.

"We're up 2-0, we're in a good spot," Isner said.

While the United States are the most successful Davis Cup nation ever, with 32 titles, they were ousted in the first round the past two years by Britain.

They last played in the semi-finals in 2012, when they fell 3-1 at Spain.

The winners of the best-of-five match tie will take on either the Czech Republic or France in the semi-finals.

The Czechs and French were tied 1-1 after the opening day of their tie in Prague.
