<p>Meanwhile, the BBC said on Sunday that one of its journalists covering the protests was assaulted and detained by the Chinse police in Shanghai. He was later released after several hours.</p>

<p>"The BBC is extremely concerned about the treatment of our journalist Ed Lawrence, who was arrested and handcuffed while covering the protests in Shanghai," a spokesperson for the British public service broadcaster said in a statement.</p>

<p>Social media showed a man whom other journalists identified as Lawrence being arrested by men in police uniforms.</p>

<p>The BBC said it had not been given a credible explanation for Lawrence's detention.</p>

<p>China reported the fifth straight daily record of 40,347 new COVID-19 infections on November&nbsp;27, of which 3,822 were symptomatic and 36,525 were asymptomatic, the National Health Commission said on Monday.</p>

<p>China has been marred by rare protests against Covid measures that are part of the nation's strict zero-Covid policy. Police face the unusual task of maintaining law and order as people express anger over recent restrictions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Demonstrators clashing with the police in Shanghai as the protests continued for a third day, further spreading to several cities. This comes after the deadly apartment fire in the country's far west.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Thursday, a fire at a residential high-rise building in the city of Urumqi, reportedly led to the death of at least 10 people. Urumqi is the capital of the Xinjiang region.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A blood thinning drug, widely administered to Covid patients who have been discharged from hospital has been found by a study to be not working and having serious side-effects. The research has reportedly shown that Apixaban, the drug in question, can cause severe bleeding. The anticoagulant is often called to be 'life saving for the patients.</p>

<p>However, Heal Covid trial, UK government funded initiative has found that this may not be the case.</p>

<p>“These first findings from Heal-Covid show us that a blood-thinning drug, commonly thought to be a useful intervention in the post-hospital phase, is actually ineffective at stopping people dying or being readmitted to hospital," said Professor Charlotte Summers, chief investigator of the trial. She was quoted by The Guardian.</p>

<p>“This finding is important because it will prevent unnecessary harm occurring to people for no benefit,” Summers added. She is intensive care doctor at Addenbrooke's hospital in Cambridge, UK.</p>

<p>&nbsp;“This trial is the first robust evidence that longer anticoagulation after acute Covid-19 puts patients at risk for no clear benefit," said Dr Mark Toshner, the co-chief investigator of the study.</p>

<p>“Our hope is that these results will stop this drug being needlessly prescribed to patients with Covid-19 and we can change medical practice,” he added.</p>

<p>The trial was run by experts at Addenbrooke's and Cambridge University. 402 volunteers were given the drug. Several of them suffered severe bleeding and had to discontinue the drug. The trail also found that administering Apixaban did not significant lower likelihood of recovered patients getting admitted to hospital.</p>

<p>Just a day earlier, 35,183 new cases had been detected. Out of these 3474 were symptomatic while 31,709 were asymptomatic.</p>

<p>Excluding imported infections, China reported 39,506 new local cases, of which 3,648 were symptomatic and 35,858 were asymptomatic, up from 34,909 a day earlier.</p>

<p>There was one new death, versus none a day earlier, raising the total number of fatalities to 5,233.</p>

<p>As of Nov. 26, mainland China had confirmed 307,802 cases with symptoms.</p>

<p>China has been implementing its strict 'Zero-Covid policy' which has involved strict lockdowns even if one case was detected in an area. China is among last of the major economies still to be grappling with large number of Covid infections.</p>

<p>There is public anger against the strict lockdown. There have been demonstrations in various cities and people have even clashed with authorities and medical workers.</p>

China sees fourth straight day of record number of Covid cases

<p>China's industrial activity saw a further drop in January-October period as the second largest economy in the world grappled with Covid outbreaks. The strict lockdowns in accordance with China's tough 'Zero-Covid' policy has resulted in dampened economic activity.</p>

<p>Industrial profits fell 3.0% in the first 10 months of 2022 from a year earlier. That compares with a 2.3% drop for January-September, National Bureau of Statistics data released on Sunday showed.</p>

<p>The bureau has not reported standalone monthly figures since July.</p>

<p>Profits declined for 22 of China's 41 major industrial sectors.</p>

<p>"Recent outbreaks of domestic epidemics have frequently occurred, the risk of global economic recession has intensified, and industrial enterprises are facing greater pressure," the bureau said in a statement.</p>

<p>The downbeat data for the world's second-largest economy also reflects a debt payment crisis within the country's property sector and a sharp slowdown in consumer spending.</p>

<p>The number may appear to be small compared to the large population size of 1.4 billion, but the spurt of cases being detected despite the zero-Covid policy in place has rattled the officials.</p>

<p>The surge comes when China has been looking to ease restrictions to mitigate the social and economic effects of zero-Covid policy.</p>

<p>Earlier, China came out with a 20-point plan to ease restrictions, including reducing the quarantine period and scrapping mass testing when the risk of transmission is low.</p>

<p>The State Council, China’s cabinet, had asked authorities to enforce the new guidelines while also containing outbreaks.</p>

<p>On Wednesday, the Beijing health authorities asked the companies to reduce the number of working people in offices, strictly monitor their health and increase sanitation.</p>

<p>In Shanghai, travellers have been barred from entering public venues including restaurants, shopping centres, supermarkets, gyms and internet cafes for five days, reports South China Morning Post newspaper.</p>
