These 176 Pakistanis were stranded in different Indian states including Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand and Delhi due to the extended lockdown and closure of Attari-Wagah border following the outbreak of coronavirus, the Foreign Office (FO) said in a statement.

In line with the Prime Minister's directions, for safe and smooth repatriation of stranded Pakistanis, the High Commission for Pakistan in New Delhi remained in close contact with the Indian side and the Foreign Office has been coordinating with other national authorities in Pakistan, the FO added.

It said the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi also facilitated and coordinated logistics for transfer of these Pakistanis to Attari from more than twenty different Indian cities, amid the lockdown.

More than 400 stranded Pakistanis have been repatriated from India through Attari-Wagah border since March 20, 2020.

The ongoing efforts of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue till the repatriation of all remaining stranded Pakistanis, the FO said.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that more than 110,000 Pakistani stranded in various parts of the world wanted to come back.

Pakistan has till now witnessed 57,705 cases of coronavirus, with 1,197 deaths.

People with a faulty gene linked to a greater risk of dementia may also have increased chances of developing severe COVID-19, according to a large-scale study which may lead to new ideas for treatments against the deadly infectious disease.

The study, published in the Journal of Gerontology, Medical Sciences, found a high risk of severe COVID-19 infection among those who carried two faulty copies of the APOE gene termed e4e4.

Researchers, including those from the University of Exeter Medical School in the UK, assessed data from the UK Biobank -- a large long-term study investigating the respective contributions of genetic predisposition and environmental exposure to the development of disease in over 5,00,000 people.

The scientists found that one in 36 people of European ancestry have two faulty copies of the APOE gene, which they said can increase risks of Alzheimer's disease up to 14-fold, and also increase risks of heart disease.

In the current study, the scientists found that carrying these gene mutations doubles the risks of COVID-19 -- even in people who had not developed these diseases.

Previously, they had found that people with dementia are three times more likely to get severe COVID-19.

However, the researchers said dementia patients are not one of the groups advertised to shield -- or shelter in place -- on health grounds.

The scientists speculated that part of the increased risk effect may have been exposed to the high prevalence of the virus in care homes.

But based on the current study's findings, they said a genetic component may also be at play.

According to the researchers, people with the APOE e4e4 genotype were at double the risk of developing severe COVID-19, compared to those with the common e3e3 form of the gene.

They said a majority of people in the population, and in the sample size, have not yet been exposed to the virus.

From the analysis, the scientists said 2.36 per cent of participants with European ancestries had the ApoE e4e4 faulty gene.

But 5.13 per cent of those who tested positive for COVID-19 had this gene variant, indicating that the risk is doubled compared to e3e3.

"This is an exciting result because we might now be able to pinpoint how this faulty gene causes vulnerability to COVID-19. This could lead to new ideas for treatments," said Chia-Ling Kuo, study co-author from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in the US.

The researchers believe that increasing disease risks that appear inevitable with ageing might actually be due to specific biological differences.

They said this could help scientists understand why some people stay active to age 100 and beyond, while others become disabled and die in their sixties.

While several studies have shown that people with dementia are at high risk of developing severe COVID-19, the authors of the current research believe that this may not simply be due to the effects of dementia, advancing age or frailty, or exposure to the virus in care homes.

The effect, according to study co-author David Melzer, could be partly due to this underlying genetic change, which puts people at risk for both COVID-19 and dementia.

"Further investigation is needed to understand the biological mechanisms linking ApoE genotypes to COVID-19 severity," the scientists concluded in the study.

6,535 new positive cases, 146 deaths in the last 24 hours: India continues its high daily spikes

The Maharashtra government has formally written to the Kerala government seeking assistance to fight the Covid-19 pandemic in the worst-hit Mumbai-Pune industrial-commercial belt.

The development came days after Maharashtra`s Health Minister Rajesh Tope spoke to Kerala`s Health and Social Welfare Minister KK&nbsp;Shailaja and discussed the Covid-19 pandemic challenges.

Now, the Maharashtra government has sent an official letter seeking doctors and nurses for the pandemic crisis here.

Dr T.P. Lahane, Director, Medical Education and Research, -- who is the Nodal Officer, Covid-19 -- has said soon, the number of cases are expected to increase in Mumbai and Pune.

He has requested Minister Shailaja for a 50-member team of specialist doctors and nurses to assist the Maharashtra health authorities.

For their services, Maharashtra is prepared to pay MBBS doctors Rs 80,000 a month and Rs 2 lakh per month for MD/MS specialist doctors, which include physicians and intensivists.

For the Trained nursing staff, the state will pay Rs 30,000 a month.

The Maharashtra government will also provide accommodation, meals, required medicine and personal protective equipment to all the visiting doctors and nurses.

"Given the emerging situation, the Maharashtra government has decided to set up a 600-bedded COVID Health Care Center at Mahalakshmi Race Course in Mumbai City. It also included a 125 bedded ICU," says the letter by Lahane.

India on Monday reported another highest single-day spike with 6977 new cases of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) in the last 24 hours, taking the infection tally to 1,38,845, according to data released by the Union health ministry.

A total of 154 deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours.

As a precautionary measure, the infected official's nine neighbours, who also work at different Delhi jails, have been asked to quarantine themselves and not to attend duties even though none of them came in contact with him, they said.

All the men are presently asymptomatic and authorities will keep a check on their medical condition, they added.

Till date, 18 people from Rohini Jail have tested positive for COVID-19 while another case was also reported from Mandoli Jail after a deputy superintendent tested positive last week.&nbsp;

"The Centre should seek to maintain social distancing. This shoulder to shoulder sitting is dangerous," it said.&nbsp;

A bench of Chief Justice S A Bobde told the Centre and the Air India represented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta that they should be more worried about the health of the citizens rather than that of the Airline.

With 40 asymptomatic infection cases, China has reported 51 new coronaviruses and the majority of them in the contagion's first epicentre Wuhan, where over six million tests have been conducted in the last 10 days, health officials said on Monday.

Chinese health authority had conducted 11,46,156 nucleic acid tests on May 23 in the epicentre Wuhan.&nbsp;

The novel coronavirus first emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan and then spread to the entire world.&nbsp;

According to data provided by the health authorities, more than 14 lakh nucleic acid tests were conducted in Wuhan a day earlier.

The nucleic acid test is a technique used to detect a virus or bacteria that acts as a pathogen in blood, tissue, or urine.&nbsp;

While no new domestically-transmitted COVID-19 cases were reported in China on Sunday, 11 imported cases including 10 in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and one in Sichuan province were reported, the NHC said in its daily report.

Out of the 40 new asymptomatic cases, 38 were reported in Wuhan, which is currently undergoing mass testing of its over 11.2 million people after a spike in the asymptomatic cases. Currently, 396 people with asymptomatic symptoms are under medical observation in China, including 326 in Wuhan, according to the health authority.

Asymptomatic cases refer to the patients who have tested COVID-19 positive but develop no symptoms such as fever, cough or sore throat.&nbsp;

Privacy concerns over Qatar's coronavirus contact tracing app, a tool that is mandatory on pain of prison, have prompted a rare backlash and forced officials to offer reassurance and concessions.

Like other governments around the world, Qatar has turned to mobile phones to trace people's movements and track who they come into contact with, allowing officials to monitor coronavirus infections and alert people at risk of contagion.

Justin Martin, a journalism professor based in Qatar, warned authorities in a tweet not to "erode" trust by enforcing "an app with such alarming permissions".

The government launched the "Ehteraz" app, meaning "precaution", in April and on Friday it became mandatory for all citizens and legal residents to install it on their phones.

Non-compliance is punishable by up to three years in jail -- the same term as for failing to wear a mask in public -- in a state battling one of the world's highest per capita infection rates.

Almost 44,000 of Qatar's 2.75 million people have tested positive for the respiratory disease -- 1.6 per cent of the population -- and 23 people have died.

Security forces manned checkpoints across Qatar on Sunday to ensure the use of the app, local media reported, alongside checking for use of masks.

Criticism of the government is rare in Qatar and laws to prohibit disrespect towards officials.

However, officials have said that the law on the app will be enforced with "understanding".

Qatar coronavirus contact tracing app 'Ehteraz' stirs rare privacy backlash

In India, there are 63,624 active Coronavirus positive cases. So far 45,299 COVID 19 positive patients have recovered. As many as 3435 people have died due to the deadly virus and one has been migrated. Speaking at the launch of ‘Chikitsa Setu’ app, Adityanath said the smartphone application is user friendly and practical and designed to spread awareness about the deadly virus.

“Spread of coronavirus can be controlled through awareness and corona warriors have a major role in this. For breaking the corona chain, when they become infected and are sent in quarantine or isolation, the fight will get interrupted,” he said.

“In such a situation, we will have to protect the doctors, paramedical staff, nurses, ward boys, sweepers, police personnel working on the front line as corona warriors,” he added.

“We can defeat this invisible enemy by implementing processes in a transparent manner with full vigilance and caution,” he said further.

Stressing that due to lack of adequate training in dealing with the deadly virus, some hospitals are made to shut down.

“For such a situation, we have facilitated training through the app. If people want to get trained, then they can do so through this app. Training plays an important role in medication,” he said.

“We have to save ourselves first and then show the way to protect others from the infection,” he added.

He said efforts should be made to protect the app from cyber-attacks. “We have to remain careful about it. However, the corona chain has to be broken and we have to prepare ourselves for it. The ‘Chikitsa Setu app’ will help us in discharging our duties,” he said.

Viraj Singh: The size of Indian diaspora in Tajikistan is approximately 1500 people including 1287 Indian students pursuing medical education at Avicenna Tajik State Medical University (ATSMU), Dushanbe. The embassy is in constant touch with the Indian Diaspora and especially with the students. We are well aware of their concerns and have been rendering all possible assistance to them during this ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic. I have personally met the representative of Indian students studying in ATSMU and other responsible faces. The embassy has provided some medicines to be used by the Indian students if need be. &nbsp;Till date, all Indians are in good mental and physical health. As far as repatriation is concerned, you may be aware that the Government of India is facilitating the return of Indian nationals stranded abroad on compelling grounds in a phased manner. &nbsp;These evacuation flights are planned in a phased manner to ensure the safety of Indians abroad and in India. We have created a database of all Indians in Tajikistan willing to be repatriated to India. The same is being shared with the Ministry of External Affairs of India. At the moment, two Air India special flights have been scheduled from Dushanbe to Delhi on 27th and 28th May 2020. We expect some students to be evacuated on the same. It would take time to repatriate all the desiring Indian citizens from Tajikistan. We have requested the students and other Indians willing to be repatriated to exercise patience. They have been advised to take all necessary precautions and maintain social distancing, use masks, sanitizers and handwash frequently and avoid unnecessary travel. The SOP issued by Ministry of Home Affairs, to be adhered to by individuals before and after arrival in India has been shared with them, so, that they are prepared for the evacuation process.

In this aspect, India and Tajikistan have pretty much adopted a similar strategy. Tajikistan closed all its airports and land borders in March, approximately the same time when India also closed its airports and borders. All schools, colleges and universities have been shut down; promotion to next class based on scores obtained till now and online education is being promoted. Non-food markets remain shut. It is mandatory to wear a mask in public. The population of Tajikistan is 9.3 million and most of the country is mountainous. So, they have not gone for a complete lockdown as in India and some other countries. Ministry of External Affairs of India conducted a Webinar on 'Managing COVID 19 Pandemic- Experience and Best Practices of India' from April 27-May 1 2020 by PGIMER, Chandigarh under its India Technical and Educational Cooperation. The same was offered to all ITEC partner countries including Tajikistan. More than 90 delegates from various partner countries benefited from the same.

Viraj Singh: The Covid19 pandemic has impacted a large number of countries including Tajikistan. Markets and institutions are closed. All airports and borders are sealed. People are working from home. There is excessive pressure on the Health system and then there are Indian nationals who wish to be repatriated. At the moment, as Head of the Mission, the top two priorities for me is to ensure the safety of Mission’s staff, both Indians and locals and repatriation of Indians. We have taken several measures including a rotational system of working and working from home, exercising self-isolation if need be. Nobody ever imagined that Diplomacy would involve wearing masks and gloves and using hand sanitizers even at your office. A large part of the work is done telephonically and electronically. Gone are the days when face to face meetings using interpreters were frequent. This is where knowledge of the local language- Tajik and Russian- play an important role and Indian diplomats have been able to use their language skills effectively in times like these. Video conferences are the new normal and digitalization is the future. And I must say that our diplomats have stood up to these challenges and embraced digitalization fully. They are constantly upgrading and adjusting to this new mode of working. Ministry of External Affairs of India has always been at the forefront of using technology to reach out to people- home and abroad. We see the same trend continuing.

The head of the World Bank warned Tuesday that the coronavirus crisis threatens to push some 60 million people into extreme poverty, wiping out the gains made over the past three years.

"That's home to 70 per cent of the world's population. This represents a significant milestone," Malpass told a conference call.

Malpass said the bank anticipates a five per cent contraction in the world economy this year, with severe effects on the poorest countries.

"Our estimate is that up to 60 million people will be pushed into extreme poverty, erasing all the progress made in poverty alleviation in the past three years, and our forecasts indicate a deep recession," Malpass said.

Nearly five million people have been infected by the virus around the world, and more than 300,000 have died since it first appeared in China in late 2019.

So far, the World Bank has spent $5.5 billion to shore up beleaguered health systems, economies and social services in poor countries.

But Malpass stressed that the World Bank's efforts alone were insufficient, and urged donor nations to step up bilateral aid to poorer countries to ensure a durable recovery.

He said restoring the flow of remittance payments and tourism -- key sources of income for developing countries -- would be "critical steps in the reopening."

A year-long moratorium on debt payments by less developed countries -- called for by the G-20 in mid-April -- has gained growing acceptance, he noted.

According to Malpass, 14 countries have agreed to such a suspension of debt payments, another 23 are expected to request it, and 17 were giving it serious consideration.

"That's a very welcome and very fast response and positive response to the G-20 countries' commitment," he said.

International travellers planning a trip to Norway without a business reason should think again following drastic action announced by the Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg today.&nbsp;

“We’re discouraging people to leave Norway… If you don’t have a work reason to come to Norway, you will be sent back when you arrive in Norway these days,” she said.

"Norway is so in control of the infections that future localized outbreaks will be handled with intensive testing and specialized lockdowns," &nbsp;Solberg said.

“We have never been after the Second World War in a situation like this in Norway,” Solberg added.

Norway may decide to loosen restrictions imposed on leisure travel from other Nordic states - which include Denmark, Sweden, Iceland and Finland - by June 15, and will consider admitting travellers from selected other European countries by July 20.

Sweden, which shares a 1,630-km (1,000-mile) border with Norway, has adopted a mix of legislation and recommendations in response to the coronavirus pandemic, rather than declaring a full lockdown as seen in most of the rest of Europe.

Sweden has registered more than 3,500 coronavirus-linked deaths - a toll far lower than many large EU countries but around five times higher than Denmark and more than 10 times that of its other Nordic neighbours.&nbsp;

The new guidelines have allowed salons, barbershops, shopping complexes and markets to open from May 18. However, domestic flights, schools, colleges and hotels will continue to remain closed throughout the country.&nbsp;

Except for the containment zones, there are no zone-wise restrictions from the government and the states are given the liberty to decide on the colour coded zones (red, orange and green), concerning the parameters laid down by the Health Ministry.

The idea of the video was born when three doctors got together on a WhatsApp group and decided to add more of their colleagues and friends from the fraternity. But they had one strict rule on the group- No posts on Covid-19 at all costs. In no time, the group had grown to over 100 members. They were all working for top private and government hospitals in Chennai and Vellore. It was agreed upon to film a quick dance video from wherever they were and share it on the group, to make a compilation.&nbsp;

“We wanted to come up with something that would help relieve the stress. Music was a common healer and stress buster and that’s how it began. People have got this perception that we doctors are serious persons and that we can’t express ourselves, but in the end, we are human beings too and we need a vent for our emotions. We decided that we’d pick only positive songs and that each doctor or his/her team should provide a 30sec-1min clip” Dr Deepashree, Clinical lead, Interventional Radiology told WION.&nbsp;

The mash-up video that has now garnered about 30K views on Youtube features senior-doctors, hospital owners among others showcasing their dance moves to popular tracks of Michael Jackson, Bobby Mcferrin, A.R Rahman and Anirudh Ravichander. While some of them filmed the videos while at their hospitals, few had also filmed them from their residences and temporary hotel rooms.&nbsp;

“Everyone one of us is tired of speaking about Corona and many are missing their families. It’s sweet that all agreed to come together for a dance video for the sake of motivating each other and keeping us happy. Some of us way of thanking the housekeeping and paramedical staff who are tirelessly supporting us, as always” Dr Meena, Senior Consultant, Emergency Medicine told WION.&nbsp;

But beyond the dance video on their Youtube channel, the groups of doctors now want to step up their efforts and conduct interactive sessions with the general public. According to a new report by international management consulting firm Arthur D Little, the worst of COVID-19's impact will be felt by India's most vulnerable in terms of job loss, poverty increase and reduced per-capita income, which in turn will result in a steep decline in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the PTI report added.

"Given the continued rise of COVID-19 cases, we believe that a W-shaped recovery is the most likely scenario for India. This implies a GDP contraction of 10.8 per cent in FY 2020-21 and GDP growth of 0.8 per cent in FY 2021-22," the report said.

India's COVID-19 tally has crossed 90,000 and the nationwide death toll has touched nearly 2,800 so far.

The report titled "India: Surmounting the economic challenges posed by COVID-19: A 10-point programme to revive and power India's post-COVID economy" said the 'collateral damage' of the forecasted GDP slowdown, will be felt most acutely in employment, poverty alleviation, per-capita income and overall nominal GDP.

"Unemployment may rise to 35 per cent from 7.6 per cent resulting in 136 million jobs lost and a total of 174 million unemployed. Poverty alleviation will receive a set-back, significantly changing the fortunes of many, putting 120 million people into poverty and 40 million into abject poverty," the report said.

"India is headed towards a W-shaped economic recovery with a potential GDP contraction of 10.8 per cent in FY21. An opportunity loss of USD 1 trillion is staring India in its face," said Barnik Chitran Maitra, lead author of the report and Managing Partner &amp; CEO of Arthur D Little, India and South Asia.

The report suggested a 10-point programme to accelerate the recovery which includes strengthening the 'safety net' significantly for the most vulnerable, enabling the survival of small and medium businesses, restarting the rural economy and providing targeted assistance to at-risk sectors.

It further said the government should launch "Make in India 2.0" to capture global opportunities, build 'Modern India', accelerate Digital India and Innovation, strengthen global investment corridors with the US, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Japan and the UK, debottleneck land and labour and transform banking and financial markets in a bid to secure a sustainable economic future for 1.3 billion Indians.&nbsp;
