"With the onset of the monsoon, numerous viral and bacterial eye illnesses are on the rise. And, people are using antibiotics with steroid combinations irrationally, not knowing the deadly effect of those medicines," says&nbsp;Dr Priyanka Singh (MBBS, MS, DNB, FAICO), Consultant and Eye Surgeon at Neytra Eye Centre in New Delhi.

She adds, "Most of the patients I have seen were using multiple antibiotic drops or using one drop for few days then switching to another on their own or as suggested by a chemist. Also, patients were using very strong steroids and they reported to me when the problem of conjunctivitis worsened."

The medical expert continues, "Irrational use of antibiotics causes resistance of microbes which after a due time lead to ineffectiveness of medicines. Irrational or wrong medicines such as steroids may cause visually threatening problems like infection of the cornea leading to corneal ulcer, increase in eye pressure leading to glaucoma, and increase in viral infections which can later affect the inner parts of the eye. These complications can cause permanent loss of vision."

So, what's the right way to treat these illnesses? According to Dr Priyanka,&nbsp;eye drops should be prescribed only by a certified eye specialist (ophthalmologist). And, she says that steroids are not prescribed for eye flu unless absolutely necessary (Note - It must be assessed by an ophthalmologist).&nbsp;

"Patients should refrain from buying such medicines and chemist shops should not dispense without a prescription," Dr Priyanka concludes.

Amid conjunctivitis surge in India, doctors warn about using steroid eye drops | Exclusive

The condition commonly referred to as "pink eye" or conjunctivitis becomes more common during the rainy season. The weather's dampness and humidity provide the perfect condition for the growth of the bacteria and viruses that cause this extremely common eye infection. For these diseases, rainfall that collects in various places serves as a breeding environment. Conjunctivitis risk is also increased by the fact that people are more inclined to come into proximity to contaminated water or surfaces. The overall number of infections this year has already increased, according to doctors in Delhi and the surrounding territories.

To know further about the on-ground situation, and seek an expert opinion, WION spoke to Dr. Charu Tyagi, eye specialist and former senior consultant at Max hospitals who told us, “The number of cases we are coming across is increasing day by day, and there has been a drastic surge in cases in the past 10-12 days. There is a remarkable rise, which is at least three to four times the previous years.” &nbsp;

<h2>What is conjunctivitis?&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;</h2>

Redness, itching, excessive tearing, and thick discharge from the eyes are symptoms of the disorder. The clear tissue that covers the white area of the eye and inside of the eyelids, known as the conjunctiva, becomes inflamed as a result.

Conjunctivitis can affect one or both eyes in a person. Some forms of pink eye are extremely contagious (easily passed from person to person), but several others are not, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

There are three main forms of "pink eye": bacterial, viral, and allergic. The most typical type of conjunctivitis is viral conjunctivitis. Because it is so contagious, this kind of pink eye frequently spreads across classrooms and other crowded settings.

Bacterial conjunctivitis causes sticky eye pus. In contrast, allergic conjunctivitis, a form of pink eye, is brought on by an allergic reaction to pollen, animals, cigarette smoke, pool chlorine, automobile fumes, or other environmental factors. It's not spreadable.

To stop the spread of the disease, doctors advise patients not to share personal belongings like towels or eye makeup.

<h2>What should you do if you catch the infection?&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;</h2>

According to Dr. Tyagi, “If your symptoms are mild then good enough, it may heal on its own. But if the irritation is more, seek advice from an eye specialist as there is not one single type of strain that we’re coming across. We’re coming across viral strains, bacterial infections, and some cases of severe allergies as well. So, it will be best for the eye specialist to decide what type of infection you have and what will be the best treatment for you. One should not take over-the-counter medicines from the chemist as it may backfire very badly and create a more serious situation for the doctor and the patient.”

According to Dr. JS Titiyal, chief of the RP Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences at AIIMS, the national capital is reporting 100 such cases per day. "We are getting at least 100 cases of conjunctivitis per day.”

There is usually a seasonal increase in conjunctivitis cases, which coincides with the flu season.

To know further about the on-ground situation, and seek an expert opinion, WION spoke to Dr. Charu Tyagi, eye specialist and former senior consultant at Max hospitals who told us, “The number of cases we are coming across is increasing day by day, and there has been a drastic surge in cases in the past 10-12 days. There is a remarkable rise, which is at least three to four times the previous years.” What is conjunctivitis? Redness, itching, excessive tearing, and thick discharge from the eyes are symptoms of the disorder. The clear tissue that covers the white area of the eye and inside of the eyelids, known as the conjunctiva, becomes inflamed as a result. Conjunctivitis can affect one or both eyes in a person. Some forms of pink eye are extremely contagious (easily passed from person to person), but several others are not, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Types of conjunctivitis There are three main forms of "pink eye": bacterial, viral, and allergic. The most typical type of conjunctivitis is viral conjunctivitis. Because it is so contagious, this kind of pink eye frequently spreads across classrooms and other crowded settings. Bacterial conjunctivitis causes sticky eye pus. In contrast, allergic conjunctivitis, a form of pink eye, is brought on by an allergic reaction to pollen, animals, cigarette smoke, pool chlorine, automobile fumes, or other environmental factors. To stop the spread of the disease, doctors advise patients not to share personal belongings like towels or eye makeup. What should you do if you catch the infection? According to Dr. Tyagi, “If your symptoms are mild then good enough, it may heal on its own. But if the irritation is more, seek advice from an eye specialist as there is not one single type of strain that we’re coming across. We’re coming across viral strains, bacterial infections, and some cases of severe allergies as well. So, it will be best for the eye specialist to decide what type of infection you have and what will be the best treatment for you. One should not take over-the-counter medicines from the chemist as it may backfire very badly and create a more serious situation for the doctor and the patient.” According to Dr. JS Titiyal, chief of the RP Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences at AIIMS, the national capital is reporting 100 such cases per day. WION reached out to experts to get a better understanding of conjunctivitis and to know what can be done to avoid the infection.&nbsp;

Dr Vanuli Bajpai, who is the Consultant - Ophthalmology, HCMCT Manipal Hospital, Dwarka, told WION, "Conjunctivitis is a common concern during the monsoon season, but this year, we have seen a 50 per cent increase in cases in our OPD."&nbsp;

Dr Bajpai also added that "cases of eye flu and viral infections have been observed in all ages".&nbsp;

A virus, bacteria or allergies can cause conjunctivitis. Viral conjunctivitis is easily spread from person to person say experts while adding that allergic conjunctivitis is not contagious.&nbsp;

WION also spoke to Dr Soveeta Rath, an expert&nbsp;in&nbsp;pediatric ophthalmology, strabismus and neuro-ophthalmology at Dr. Shroff's Charity Eye Hospital, Daryaganj, said that there has been a surge in the number of conjunctivitis and eye flu cases.&nbsp;

"It's almost a 50 to 60 per cent rise. Mostly in children. Every third child has red eye or conjunctivitis. Last week, there were 30 children with conjunctivitis in the OPD. It's a seasonal surge. It happens every year. It has aggravated this year because of an increase in rain, and lack of hygiene," Dr Rath added.&nbsp;

"It spread from one person to another through touch of contaminated surfaces. It spreads by direct contact - touching your eye after touching contaminated surfaces. Therefore, don't share towels or personal items," Dr Rath further said. &nbsp;

-Sometimes conjunctivitis can also come with a sore throat, viral or fever. In this case, you should take paracetamol, or consult a doctor&nbsp; 
-Use a cold compress on the swelling 
-Avoid going to crowded places, offices or schools when you have flu. As long as the eyes are red or there is a sticky discharge, the virus is still there.&nbsp;

"In teenagers, we are also seeing body ache and weakness which can persist for days," he added.&nbsp;

A study led by Dr Vipin M Vasishtha and Dr Puneet Kumar mentioned in the report found that conjunctival involvement was present in 42.8 per cent of affected infants.

Conjunctivitis is characterised by inflammation or swelling of conjunctiva in the eye. It is&nbsp;the thin, transparent layer of tissue that covers the white part of the eye and lines the inner part of the eyelids.

Dr Suresh Kumar, who is the medical director of New Delhi's Lok Nayak hospital, told The Times of India that conjunctivitis is being observed to be one of the "defining features" of Covid infection in children.

"The good thing is that the disease is self-limiting. Most patients, be it children or adults, tend to recover on their own without any specific medication or need for hospitalisation," he told the news outlet.
