Supriya Shrinate, the digital media chief of Congress, has been dropped as candidate in Lok Sabha elections days after being slammed for a derogatory post against BJP candidate and Bollywood actress Kangana Renaut.

Supriya Shrinate, the digital media chief of Congress, has been dropped as candidate in Lok Sabha elections days after being slammed for a derogatory post against BJP candidate and Bollywood actress Kangana Renaut. Shrinate's name was not included in the eight list of party candidates after she made the controversial post which led to a political uproar. In the 2019 elections, Shrinate unsuccessfully fought in the Maharajganj seat in Uttar Pradesh. However, this time around, her name was nowhere on the Congress party's list for the Lok Sabha election. Incidentally, Maharajganj is near Rae Bareilly, the pocket burrow constituency of Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, which she will not contest this time around. Virendra Chaudhary has been fielded from Maharajganj seat by the Congress this year. She initially claimed that someone with access to her Instagram account had made the post. After a political furor erupted, she posted on social media: "Anyone who knows me will know I would never say that for a woman. However, a parody account that I have just discovered misusing my name is being run on Twitter ( @Supriyaparody ) which started the whole mischief, and is being reported." Ranaut said that the post was hurtful to her. Speaking to ANI news agency, the actress said, "Every woman deserves dignity, no matter what profession she is in...The most I am hurt by is the 'Mandi' thing, which is known as Chota Kashi and has been the land of several Rishis". Taking to X, Ranaut posted, "Dear Supriya ji, in the last 20 years of my career as an artist, I have played all kinds of women. From a naive girl in Queen to a seductive spy in Dhaakad, from a goddess in Manikarnika to a demon in Chandramukhi, from a prostitute in Rajjo to a revolutionary leader in Thalaivii". As India gears up for the general elections 2024, there's heightened scrutiny on the candidates being fielded by political parties and their backgrounds, as well as ideological leanings.

Recently, a controversy erupted surrounding the candidate Sunil Sharma whom India's main opposition party Congress had earlier nominated for the Jaipur constituency from India's northern state of Rajasthan.

Though, only in a matter of a day, the Congress swiftly replaced its Lok Sabha election candidate for Jaipur with Pratap Singh Khachariyawas, the controversy gained much attention in India.

This is because of Sharma's purported association with the right-leaning digital platform, Jaipur Dialogues.

Jaipur Dialogues is a platform based in India that conducts discussions on various political topics and organises talks where experts gather to exchange ideas, debate, and analyse critical topics relevant to Indian society and beyond.

As per reports, the platform criticises the Congress party and its stance on various issues. When Congress gave a ticket to Sunil Sharma, an alleged director of the platform, all hell broke loose, even within the Congress party leaders.

It triggered an uproar within the party and drew sharp criticism from senior leaders, including MP Shashi Tharoor.

The decision to replace Sharma came after mounting pressure and objections raised against his candidacy, primarily due to the alleged communal nature of posts made by Jaipur Dialogues.

Senior party figures voiced concerns, with Shashi Tharoor even suggesting that Sharma might have experienced a transformative "Pauline epiphany."

Sharma's nomination, announced in the party's third list, sparked discussions and led to doubts regarding his alignment with Congress values.
